Eagerly awaited follow up to Andy Jackson's acclaimed album 'Signal To Noise' (2014) and '73 Days At Sea' (2016) sees this original musician and producer explore new musical ground.

'Twelve Half Steps' is a purely instrumental album; a fascinating collection of compositions in modal scales.

Andy explains: "Twelve half steps; Twelve modal scales; Twelve blank sheets of paper with rigid frames. Twelve exercises in style. Twelve rocks turned over, twelve objects underneath, each one half expected, half revealed.

The limitations were opportunities. Start walking in a prescribed direction, get to the corner, see what's round that. The rigidity of the start creating a freedom of movement once in the landscape, knowing that there are no wrong answers. It's not a bug, it's a feature. Each piece was started and finished before the next was considered. Each piece stands on its own, but they are linked as the same steps were traced on again and again. The same shapes but painted with different colours each time."

As one would expect of a musician, engineer and producer of the pedigree of Andy Jackson, this new album is once again nothing short of impressive, both sonically and musically. The release also features a Blu-ray disc featuring 96 kHz / 24-bit 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos Mixes.

Released in February 1971, Barclay James Harvest's second album was recorded at Abbey Road studios and was produced by Norman Smith. Widely regarded as one of the band's early masterpieces, 'Once Again', the album was critically acclaimed upon its release and featured the Barclay James Harvest symphony orchestra and eventually attained Gold disc status.

This new expanded edition features three CDs and an all-region Blu ray disc and comprises 44 tracks. The set features the original UK stereo mix remastered from the original master tapes and also includes stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound and stereo mixes by Stephen W. Tayler, a new remaster of the 1972 SQ Quad mix of the album and a multi-channel version of the 1972 Quad mix.

The SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio of Tubular Bells is a limited edition item.
The Dolby Atmos Mix has been created by producer David Kosten (who's worked with the likes of Steven Wilson and Bat For Lashes) and he had the challenge of trying to recreate Oldfield's original 1973 mix in immersive audio. Kosten also created a new stereo mix and the blu-ray also includes a new edit of the classic Tubular Bells intro which is also in stereo and Atmos. All four versions are only available physically via this SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio!
Additionally, Mike Oldfield's 5.1 Surround Mix from 2009 is also included. That was only ever issued on DVD at the time, so it sees its debut here on Blu-ray as lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.
The four-channel Quad Mix was mixed by Phil Newell in 1975 and was issued on 2001 on SACD. It has some differences to the original stereo and 5.1 mixes, most notable the Viv Stanshall voiceover on 'Sailor's Hornpipe' at the end It has been unavailable since that time but is the third different spatial audio mix on this Blu-ray.
The original stereo mix on the Blu-ray is as used on the new half-speed mastered vinyl and of course fans will be very interested in the Tubular Bells 4 demo.

Every once in a while, a band will come along with a sound thatwill be incredibly difficult to pigeonhole. All of the elements will point towards different genres and subgenres, and no matter which way your mind veers towards you still will never truly be able to definitively group them into a specific style.

Sonic Moon are one of those bands. While it would be easy to say hard rock, classic rock, or even desert rock, none of these really encapsulate the band at all. There are elements of psychedelia in the mix, and a little doom too, such is the nature of the band, they won't be for your average fan in any of those arenas.

The truth is, Sonic Moon is ALL and NONE of these styles, all at the same time. When they are heavy there are definite nods to Black Sabbath, while at other moments you could be transported into a world of psychedelic prog, not unlike several of the iconic '70s bands.

A nostalgic blast from Iain Matthews who sings 15 songs of peace, love and understanding which were performed at Woodstock. It's fitting that Iain Matthews' latest version of Matthews Southern Comfort revisits the legendary Woodstock Festival of 1969 as they tackle "15 songs of peace, love and understanding" on this album of songs which were performed on Yasgur's farm back in the day. Fitting because Matthews' name is indelibly linked to the festival due to his worldwide hit cover of Joni Mitchell's ode to the festival back in 1970. Those of us with a long memory will recall Matthews on Top Of The Pops singing about stardust and for many this will have been a bit of a gateway into the world of nascent Americana music. This reviewer certainly recalls finding out that a certain American band that went under the moniker of CSN&Y also had a version of 'Woodstock' and that certainly led to a nigh-on 50-year-long dive into a rabbit hole.

Anyhow, Matthews, armed with a new version of his Southern Comfort band, was disarmed when the world shut down for a while. Aiming to get back on track, he alighted on the idea of revisiting his Woodstock by degrees fame, a tactic he is happy to mention in the liner notes here. As such the album is a collection of 15 songs which were performed at the Woodstock festival and, suffice to say, it's quite an intriguing listen with its success partly dependent on how familiar one is with the originals.

If you recall the festival, it was a very mixed bag, the tail end of 60's folkies sharing the stage with psychedelic bands, soul giants and the upcoming standard bearers of stadium rock. To their credit, Matthews Southern Comfort step at times outside their (ahem) comfort zone to tackle all of the above. The current lineup (Matthews along with B. J. Baartmans, Eric Devries and Bart De Win) acquit themselves well throughout while the recording captures them quite superbly in crystal clear sound.

A glance at the track list raises a quizzical eye as to how this low-key band will approach songs by Hendrix, Santana, Blood Sweat & Tears and Sly & The Family Stone. 'Purple Haze', the third song on the album, does pose problems as the band deliver it in a CSN&Y rock style which ultimately doesn't do it any favours. The cover of Santana's 'Evil Ways' is more successful with Baartman's guitar slithering away as the band lay down a mild Latin beat but a similar approach to Blood Sweat & Tears' 'Spinning Wheel' just fails to ignite. Surprisingly, Sly's 'Everyday People' is one of the highlights of the album with its slide guitar and harmonica duet and its loose-limbed delivery pumping new life into this joyful song.

Less surprisingly, Matthews delivers excellent renditions of CSN&Y's '4+20′, Tim Hardin's 'If I Were A Carpenter' and John Sebastian's 'Darlin' Be Home Soon' while the version of The Grateful Dead's 'High Time' is a pinnacle. Hendrix's blasphemous rendition of the 'Stars & Banners' is referenced at the beginning of the hoot that is Country Joe's 'Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die Rag' (unfortunately Matthews fails to deliver the infamous Fish cheer but does include a nod to a later cover here from The Who). Canned Heat's 'Going Up The Country' is given a tremendous zydeco makeover and The Youngbloods' 'Get Together' remains quite the anthem for any who still harbour thoughts that love can conquer all.

Ultimately this album is a must for committed Matthews fans and it's a fair bet to say that, if you are of the Woodstock generation, then it's a grand nostalgic trip. This is well amplified on the final song, Matthews' take on the amphetamined Who anthem 'My Generation', here delivered almost as an elegy.
