The album features Erlend Krauser (ex member of Lake), John Engehausen and Ralf Bittermann on guitar. The gnarled sounds of the Hammond organ come courtesy of Detlef Bosche, whereas George secured the services of pianist Matthias Pogoda for the title track Life Is A Killer.

The result is a prog-rock album with numerous melodious pop elements, mastered by no less a figure than Grammy Award winner Tim Young - the icing on the cake of such a visionary project.

Finally George is the epitome of flawlessly arranged and recorded prog-rock pop music - endlessly deep tracks that ache with the pain of separation. With addictive walls of sound that repeatedly build up to monumental proportions. Sophisticated melodies, held together by forceful arrangements, are melded with harmonious vocals, heavy-metal guitar riffs, opulent keyboards, cinematic strings and epic choruses.

For the percussion parts, he found someone whose name carries serious weight in the music business: Todd Sucherman, the drummer of legendary US rock band Styx, who works as an online session drummer in his spare time.

Backed only by co-producer Danny Kortchmar on guitar and Steve Jordan on drums, with all three playing synthesizers, Neil Young turns in an album that attempts to mix the raunchy rock thrust of his Crazy Horse-style music with contemporary trends in pop, especially the tendency to turn the drums way up in the mix. It's an uneasy combination in which Jordan's forceful drumming dominates the tracks, with Young's vocals nearly buried. But that only means that the production has ruined a group of songs few of which were any good anyway. The only one that offers the promise of being one of Young's better efforts is "Hippie Dream," a sober criticism of what became of '60s idealism in general and Young's erstwhile bandmate David Crosby in particular. But if Landing on Water was not a good album, at least it seemed to point Young away from the stylistic dabbling of his last three albums and back toward the kind of rock he did best, and at least some of his fans returned as a result, giving him a slight uptick in sales.

On the surface, Cate Le Bon's seemingly chill, immersive music seems like something you could put on in the background while doing chores or just relaxing. Ha. In reality, it doesn't leave you alone. It prods and pokes and forces you to engage-to marvel at her odd flourishes, deceptively complicated guitar parts and sly arrangements. She has said that Pompeii, her sixth album, was "written and recorded in a quagmire of unease." With pandemic restrictions and fog leaving her to her own devices, the singer-songwriter had plenty of time to "grapple with existence, resignation and faith." Her conclusion is pragmatic if not comforting: "The world is on fire but the bins must go out on a Tuesday night ... I put a groove behind [the unease] to hold on to. The grief is in the saxophones." In fact, Euan Hinshelwood's sax is her co-star, a supporting actor but a major presence. It can suggest agitation "Dirt on the Bed," and come on like honey on "Moderation," which sounds full and warm with its groovy, playful bass. But don't get too comfortable. This is art rock and it's provocative. The lyrics reference a 1958 essay, "The Moon"-about being less impressed by technology than art-by Brazilian modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi, who magically found ways to make hard lines and "cold" materials exceedingly human-friendly. "I can't have it/ I don't want it/ I want to touch it," Le Bon sings, skating beautifully along the contradiction of all-consuming appetite and decorum. It's a push-pull that seems embedded in her: Le Bon hails from Wales but lives in Joshua Tree, two distinctly weird, remote and mythic locales where outsiderism is worn like a badge of honor. "Pompeii" unfurls with distorted carnival music, like a carousel out of tune, foreboding in the background even as the vocal melody is reassuring: Le Bon's voice effortlessly slides up and down scales, a quick shape-shifter in the vein of Bowie. In fact, "French Boys" feels like it could have been a cut from his moody, slinky Let's Dance era. "Harbour," meanwhile, has a different '80s vibe, its synth pop and grounded ethereality recalling Kate Bush or Tracey Thorn. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Finally George is a project by Hamburg-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and session musician Georg Hahn. After several years in the industry, he decided to set up his own project in 2015, which resulted in the first album "Life Is A Killer" in 2018. Showered with praise, comparisons with Steven Wilson or Pink Floyd were always present. These are not necessarily the worst references, but they also set the bar high for a new album.

But Hahn can absolutely live up to the claim, his claim, and has once again released an album that "poaches" in exactly these realms. But "Icy Skies" is not to be understood as a copy or something like that, but much more as a bow to the genius of the musicians. This time, too, he has brought in support, but has also contributed bass, violin, guitar, keyboards and percussion in addition to the vocals. The most important guest is probably Todd Sucherman, who otherwise does his work for Styx and was already part of Finally George's debut. Sucherman himself talks down his contribution: "George's material is harmonically and rhythmically very rich, a dream for every drummer," he says, "Every song is like its own little film. To paraphrase my drummer colleague Dave Mattacks, with music this good, your job is really just not to break it." George, of course, denies this and puts it into perspective: "Todd doesn't just play the tracks in, like you might do as a session musician. He gives an incredible amount of input, suggests things and puts thought into them. Icy Skies wouldn't be what it is without him." With a great sense of harmony and melody, the songs are a little quieter and more deliberate this time around, but no less exciting because of it. Even if the first listening impression may convey otherwise at first, one should not lose sight of the album and treat it to several run-throughs. With every new spin, new impressions open up, the songs develop into real little masterpieces.

Time Skiffs isn't a straightforward album by most artists' standards: that its patchworks of sound, lengthy instrumental interludes and slowly uncoiling song structures represent Animal Collective dialling things down says more about their past oeuvre than anything else. As it is, it feels like an act of quiet consolidation rather than a breakthrough, aimed squarely at existing fans, unbothered by grabbing anyone else's attention. "How are we doing now?" asks Car Keys, over and over again, as if checking in on an old friend, a line that sums up both Time Skiffs' limitations and its charm.

In 2018, singer-songwriter Mitski (Miyawaki) released the much-acclaimed Be the Cowboy. Just over a year later, she announced that she was taking a break-from touring, from social media; in other words, from the public eye. "I sense that if I don't step away soon, my self-worth/identity will start depending too much on staying in the game, in the constant churn. I don't want to make art like that," she tweeted. Now, you can hear exactly what she was wrestling with-and how-on her seventh studio album, Laurel Hell. The lyrically devastating "Working for the Knife" is an up-close self-examination of one's creative reality and dashed dreams: "I cry at the start of every movie I guess/ 'cause I wish I was making things too/ But I'm working for the knife." It would be too flip to call it the sound of a quarter-life crisis; it's more the realization that successful art is a commodity, complete with horns mocking your pain. At once strident and dreamy, it brings to mind Tori Amos. "Stay Soft" is the natural follow-up to how you deal with the vagaries of the world. "You stay soft, get beaten/ Only natural to harden up," Mitski sings against a chill dancefloor track. Like much of the record, it is delightfully '80s-inflected, vibrating with appealingly plasticky synth and crisp percussion. So are "The Only Heartbreaker," which sounds like the soundtrack for a movie nightclub scene from that era, and "Love Me More"-a slow burn that builds to a frenzy of Mitski chanting "clean me up, clean me up." "Should've Been Me" is Top 40 joyous in the vein of a Phil Collins song-all jangling melody, wild blares and finger-snap-style percussion. It could be read as an apology for checking out: "I haven't given you what you need/ You wanted me but couldn't reach me/ I'm sorry, it should've been me." Hymn-like "I Guess" is about the end of a relationship, but the song's so dreamy and malleable that it could be romantic or platonic love, about another person or a once-passionate goal. "That's Our Lamp" is more clear. As the narrator leaves home after a fight with her partner, she sees things, literally, from the outside and reaches the realization that you can love someone without liking them-a conclusion that triggers a swell of street and crowd sounds to momentarily drown out the pain. WIth the longest song clocking in at just 3:47, these are perfect little portals to remind you that singular ache and longing can be remarkably universal.

"Halo" continues Amorphis's longtime collaboration with lyricist and folklorist Pekka Kainulainen, and concludes a trilogy begun on 2015's "Under the Red Cloud." "Halo" kicks off with a predictably crushing opener, "Northwards," whose droning keys, folk melodies, organ solos, and caffeine-fueled performances by drummer Jan Rechberger and founding guitarists Tomi Koivusaari and Esa Holopainen leave no doubt that this can only be an Amorphis record. Throw in some choirs for good measure, and you've expanded an already-perfect sound just enough to keep things interesting, but not quite enough to alienate the purist.

What follows is exactly what you'd expect from Amorphis at this stage in their career - folk-inspired progressive death metal with no shortage of hat-tips to the acid rock and prog elders of yore, hooks out the wazoo, moments that teeter on the edge of symphonic, and even the occasional blistering guitar solo. It's a sonic identity decades in the making, refined over fourteen mostly incredible albums, and requiring only the subtlest of tweaks. Cuts like "The Moon" in particular rank among the finest in Amorphis's lengthy discography.

Earlier in 2021, frontman Girish Pradhan had this to say about Hail To The Heroes, ahead of the band heading into the studio: "It will have all the musical elements that we love to hear, in our day to day lives, which of course revolves around good old Rock 'n Roll. And GATC has more than delivered on that promise. Hail To The Heroes, the band's third album overall, sees the band taking huge leaps forward from their previous album, Rock The Highway (2020). NAPALM DEATH frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway says: "You can certainly consider 'Resentment Is Always...' as an extension of - or partner recording to - the 'Throes.' album. We had long since wanted to put a mini-album out - in the spirit of the old days - and found we had enough quality tracks even after all the 'Throes...' bonus tracks to do that. Hopefully, this mini holds some nice twists in its own right for people, and certainly covering 'People Pie' by SLAB! made us really stretch ourselves, which feels great artistically. In the end, resentment is certainly seismic - it can trigger the complete erosion of humanity in many situations. That was the point that I really wanted to hammer home overall."

Stoney and Meatloaf is the only album by Stoney & Meatloaf, a collaboration between Meat Loaf and female vocalist Shaun Murphy, released in 1971 on the Motown subsidiary label Rare Earth. Meat Loaf and Murphy met while performing with the Detroit cast of Hair.

The album was re-released several times with a different track listing under the title Featuring Stoney and Meat Loaf. Firstly in 1978 and 1979 on the Prodigal label (PDL 2010) and again in 1986 on Tamla Motown (ZL 72217). The album contained most (but not all) of the tracks on the original album; "(I'd Love to Be) As Heavy as Jesus" and "Game of Love" were not on the reissue. In addition to three new tracks ("Stone Heart", "Who is the Leader of the People" and "Everything Under the Sun"), some songs appear in different versions and in some cases, different song titles.

Louder ranked Stoney & Meatloaf as the sixth best Meat Loaf album, calling it a "minor gem" and "a frothy stew of brass and thunder".

Manic Sinners are a melodic hard rock band formed by three of Romania's finest musicians in Ovidiu Anton, Adrian 'Baciu' Igrisan and Toni Dijmarescu. Heavy metallers Spirits Of Fire have announced their return with new vocalist Fabio Lione (Angra, ex-Rhapsody Of Fire), who joins original members Chris Caffery, Steve DiGiorgio, and Mark Zonder on their second album, "Embrace The Unknown". Produced by Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Archon Angel, Sweet Oblivion), "Embrace The Unknown" sees Spirits Of Fire picking up where they left off on their debut, with Caffery's skillful songwriting and fiery fretwork leading the charge.

Heavy metal supergroup Spirits of Fire first formed in 2017, released their first single in late 2018, and unleashed their debut album in February 2019. Originally formed by Chris Caffery (Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death, etc.), Mark Zonder (ex-Fates Warning, Warlord) and Tim "Ripper" Owens (ex-Judas Priest), the band's self-titled debut was met with fan and critical praise upon its release. As it approaches two years since the release of their debut, Spirits of Fire are now set to return with a new album, " Embrace The Unknown " that sees renowned Italian metal vocalist Fabio Lione taking over frontman duties for the band. Production this time comes courtesy of Aldo Lonobile, whose recent work on releases by Archon Angel featuring Zak Stevens, Sweet Oblivion featuring Geoff Tate, and his own band, Secret Sphere, makes him the perfect fit for the band.

Once again, the band worked on a set of songs that were primarily put together by Caffery, with Lione and Lonobile adding their own touches to Caffery's stellar songs. The final result sees a killer musical output that continues in the vein of "classic Priest meets Savatage" sound that the band has pursued since their formation. With Caffery's renowned guitar playing, the undeniable power of the rhythm section of Di Giorgio and Zonder, and the world class vocals of Lione, " Embrace The Unknown " sees Spirits Of Fire pushing their sonic stamp further and further. From the biting riffage of the charging opener "Embrace The Unknown", the band is firing on all cylinders and prepared to appease the heavy metal gods.

Spirits of Fire are built to deliver classic in-your-face heavy metal and they have accomplished that goal on every level on " Embrace The Unknown ". UK hard rock stalwarts TEN used the downtime during the worldwide pandemic to work on not one, but two new albums. The first album to be released, "Here Be Monsters. Following the success of the recent string of albums, from "Albion" to "Illuminati", Hughes is joined once again by guitarists Dann Rosingana, Steve Grocott and John Halliwell along with bass player Steve McKenna, and keyboard maestro Darrel Treece-Birch. Drums on the album have been handled by Markus Kullman (Sinner, Glenn Hughes, Voodoo Circle). TEN continue to raise the musical bar higher for themselves, a goal they push on every release. Stunning guitar work, rich keyboards, excellent bass and drum interplay along with Hughes' rich vocals are the order of the day here.

"Here Be Monsters" was produced by Gary Hughes and mixed and mastered by Dennis Ward. TEN's longstanding professional association with Dennis has been ongoing since he mixed their 2011 album, "Stormwarning" and has always guaranteed albums with stunning sound and production
Fans should note that there are no ties between this and the next album, ie. "Here Be Monsters" is not a "Part One" or anything of this nature. The band has simply crafted two high quality releases and decided to put them out separately, in a fashion not too dissimilar to what happened to the amazing first two records which were recorded one after the other in a very short period of time.

British hard rockers TEN have an outstanding history of releases in their storied and revered catalog. Starting out as a sort of solo project built around singer and songwriter Gary Hughes, TEN found their audience playing a hard rock sound influenced by such giants as UFO, Thin Lizzy, Magnum, Giant, and Whitesnake in a time when playing this particular sound was considered ommericial suicide. The band's early records such as "The Name Of The Rose", "The Robe", "Spellbound", and "Babylon" established the band as mainstays in the melodic hard rock genre, which has continued throughout their now 26 year career over the course of 14 studio albums.

Formed in 1969 by Daevid Allen, one of the founding members of Soft Machine, classic albums such as 'Camembert Electrique', 'Flying Teapot' and 'You' established Gong as one of the most unique, innovative and experimental rock groups of the Seventies.

Before he sadly passed away in 2015, founding Gong member, Daevid Allen, laid out his hopes for a future Gong, that it should be uplifting, exploratory and a positive force. Kavus Torabi, Fabio Golfetti, Ian East, Dave Sturt and Cheb Nettles, chosen by him, continue his vision.

'Pulsing Signals', recorded live at The Wardrobe in Leeds, The Cluny in Newcastle and Rescue Rooms in Nottingham in 2019 during The Universe Also Collapses tour finds the group in spirited form, unbeknownst to them, it being their final tour before the global pandemic took charge.

Owing to Gong being an international band, lockdown and restrictions on travel made it impossible to convene and work on new music. The band received many requests by fans to release a live album and fortunately enough, the band had multitrack recordings of several shows from the 2019 tour. Bassist Dave Sturt went through all the master tapes and selected the best performances which became 'Pulsing Signals'.

The album was recorded by Pete Wibrew and mixed by Frank Byng, while mastering was handled by Andy Jackson. The stylish artwork was designed by Steve Mitchell, who has worked closely with the band since 2016's 'Rejoice I'm Dead'.
