Dream Theater, the two-time GRAMMY-nominated and millions-selling legends of progressive music, are pleased to announce the 'Lost Not Forgotten Archives'. This fresh collaboration between the band and record label InsideOutMusic will see the virtuosic quintet's long-standing Ytsejam Records catalogue reissued, alongside some brand new additions to this special collectors series.

Ytsejam Records previously played host to Dream Theater's official bootleg release collection comprising of live shows, demos & studio outtakes from throughout the band's prolific career. As part of the 'Lost Not Forgotten Archives', the entirety of the collection will be reissued on CD, as well as for the very first time on vinyl and digital, with brand new artwork and packaging. The band have also been busy digging into their encyclopedic vault to find some very special, previously unreleased material. The first brand new release in the reinvigorated archival series will be a recording of the band's start-to-finish performance of their classic second ever studio album, 'Images & Words', taken from their performance at Tokyo, Japan's legendary Budokan venue in September of 2017.

Following this inaugural 'Lost Not Forgotten Archives' release, the extensive back catalogue of Ytsejam Records offerings will start to be reissued throughout the next several years. Plenty more previously unreleased material will get its initial publication, presenting an absolute treasure trove of Dream Theater music for fans both old and new to explore.

The group's first album is also their most successful rock effort, an ebullient country-rock collection that sounds a lot like the Flying Burrito Brothers of around the same period, with richer production and more of a sense of humor than the Burritos had, and highlighted by some excellent songs ("Country Girl," "Road to Glory," "If You Wanna Get to Heaven"). Randle Chowning's "Country Girl," in particular, is amazing as a harmonica-driven near-twin of the Eagles' "Take It Easy" that you sort of wish ran for ten minutes instead of just three. Steve Cash's jew's harp/harmonica showcase "Chicken Train" brings the band back to its roots.

Although the Smashing Pumpkins had only released two studio albums by 1994 (1991's Gish and 1993's Siamese Dream), they had an overflow of songs that were either relegated to B-sides on European singles or remained unreleased. Billy Corgan proved to be one of rock's most prolific songwriters of the 1990s alt rock movement -- as the quality of these early leftovers were often just as strong as the songs that were officially released. Since nearly all of these songs were never issued domestically, the B-side/rarity collection Pisces Iscariot was issued alongside their first long-form home video, Vieuphoria. The collection proved to be a feast for fans -- it's inexplicable why such exceptional rockers ("Plume," "Hello Kitty Kat," "Frail and Bedazzled," "Blue") and ballads ("Obscured," "La Dolly Vita") weren't featured on albums. Also included is the long and winding, 11-minute epic jam fest "Starla," which proves that Corgan was one of the finest (and most underrated) rock guitarists of the '90s, as well as a pair of unlikely covers -- Fleetwood Mac's gentle "Landslide" and the Animals' psychedelic "Girl Named Sandoz." Also included are insightful liner notes (strewn with typos) from Corgan. While it's not the definitive B-sides collection of pre-Mellon Collie Pumpkins (such tracks as "Bullet Train to Osaka," "Purr Snickety," "Apathy's Last Kiss," "My Dahlia," "Jackie Blue," "Glynis," and others are nowhere to be found), Pisces Iscariot contains some of Corgan and company's finest moments.

"In Transit" is a live album by Canadian progressive rock band Saga. The album was recorded at the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle, Munich on February 5, 1982 and at the Tivoli Theatre, Copenhagen on February 22, 23 & 24, 1982.

Over 40 years have passed since Canadian prog-rockers Saga released their breakout self-titled debut album in 1978. Their typical trademarks - synthesizer harmonies, breathtaking guitar riffs, complex keyboard arrangements and the charismatic vocals of frontman Michael Sadler - have helped Saga move over eight million records worldwide and remain an influential prog-rock institution. In 2021, earMUSIC pays tribute to Saga's legacy with a series of remastered reissues of some off the group's essential material released from 1978 to 2007.

"In Transit is one of this Canadian band's best albums, which is not often said about a live release. Saga's progressive edge is toned down by Michael Sadler's serious vocal style, which is both highly energetic and pleasantly soft. Like Marillion, their songs involve short keyboard stints followed by gracious electric guitar work, with intricate themes being unraveled in the lyrics all the while. This album radiates with the band's electrifying fervor, and by not being too progressive or pretentious, each song ends up being immensely entertaining. "Humble Stance," with the precision of Ian Crichton's guitar playing, is stunning, as is the drumming on "Wind Him Up." The synthesizer is used wisely on "How Long," faintly shimmering in and out amongst the clarity of Sadler's voice. Ending with the spirited bombast of "On the Loose," the album as a whole has no weak moments, and not a lot of crowd interference either, which can sometimes tarnish a live album. Saga produces a comfortable balance of progressive elements and straight-ahead rock, so that their music can be appreciated by fans of both styles. In Transit is solid evidence of this." On paper, a band that attempts to meld the material of Metallica and the Beatles may seem like a one- or perhaps two-joke proposition. Beatallica, however, transcended the concept by sheer force of dedication and attention to detail, in the process pleasing notoriously fanatical fans of both source groups. Masterful Mystery Tour is even tighter, more creative, and funnier than its predecessors, combining wildly disparate music so seamlessly, it's hard not to see glimpses of art in this incredible display of craftsmanship. "The Battery of Jamyz and Yoko" hilariously matches one of the Liverpool lads' most free-wheeling anthems with one of thrash metal's most intensely heavy classics, while "Everybody's Got a Ticket to Ride Except Me and My Lightning"'s machine-gun riffs reveal an unexpected musical affinity between the Fab Four and the Four Horsemen. Of course, the album wouldn't work if Beatallica didn't nail Metallica's signature sound so darn well; in many cases, singer Michael Tierney almost sounds more like classic James Hetfield than Hetfield himself, and those fans disillusioned with the speed metal pioneers' post ...And Justice for All output will find a lot to like here, regardless of the parody element.

Just when you think that the tank is empty from the Sex Pistols bollocks sessions, more gets unearthed. This is not flogging a dead horse (although some of you may see it that way and you're forgiven for being wrong.) this is more about bringing all the rare tracks in one handy package that saves an awful lot of hunting through bootleg cassettes, dodgy vinyl recordings and 'orrible sounding CDs for a particular version .

Every track has been re-mastered from the original tapes (including Spunk) so they now sound as good as they're going to get. Every little nuance is there in all it's glorious form.

To me Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols is the greatest debut album of all time by the greatest rock n roll band to ever exist. It's the album that I hold other debut albums up against. There's not a bad or skippable track on the original record which is why it's a solid 10/10 and this box is no exception.

This 4 CD box presents a lot of demos, rehearsals and rough mixes from 76-77. The majority of the material within has been released over the years in items such as the super deluxe version of the Never Mind The Bollocks and the 3CD set of Jubilee (Sexbox1).

Among the unreleased material is a God Save The Queen instrumental that cements that the pistols could in fact play despite the BS that was being touted by their (mis)management. All the instrumentals that appear throughout this set (and there's a few of them) show Paul Cook, Steve Jones and Glen Matlock were (and still are) a power house trio that are tighter than a nuns chuff.

Even the rough takes, John was pushing his voice to the limit at that particular time. The Pistols really were dedicated in honing their craft before recording the main event.

For every punk and Sex Pistols fan, this is a must have box because you can never have enough bollocks.

1981's The Elder was such a bomb worldwide that Kiss' record company outside the U.S., Casablanca/Phonogram, demanded that the band immediately assemble another greatest-hits package to prove to their befuddled fans that they were still a heavy metal group, not experimental prog rockers. Since a greatest-hits set was issued just four years prior in the form of the double LP Double Platinum, the band decided to include four brand-new tracks along with some hits, under the title of Killers (a single album). The new tracks ("I'm a Legend Tonight," "Down on Your Knees," "Nowhere to Run," "Partners in Crime") resembled the Kiss of old more than anything the band had released for a few years by this point (again, guitarist Bob "Alive II" Kulick subs for Ace Frehley). The only hits on Killers that hadn't already appeared on Double Platinum were "I Was Made for Loving You," "Sure Know Something," and "Rock and Roll All Nite (Live)"; the rest were repeats ("Love Gun," "Detroit Rock City," "God of Thunder," "Cold Gin," and "Shout It out Loud"). Killers didn't accomplish what the record company hoped it would -- re-establishing Kiss as chart-toppers -- but it did show their fans outside the U.S. that the band meant business again. [The Australian and Japanese versions of Killers include a slightly different track listing.]

Earthbound, originally released in 1972, was one of the earliest (if not the first) "official bootleg" released by a major rock band, consisting of a series of deliberately lo-fi live recordings of King Crimson's Islands era line-up on tour in the USA. When issued, because of its mid-price it was excluded from the main album charts in the UK but topped the mid-price charts rubbing shoulders with Jim Reeves & Mantovani. Atlantic in the USA didn't even bother to release it. By then, the band had broken up & the label had already been alerted to the likelihood of a new King Crimson line-up promised for later in the year. Like the later live album, USA, Earthbound remained unavailable in the early CD era, with both finally being released in 2002 on CD. Ironically this non-availability served to enhance interest in the album while DGM's live releases made fans aware that there was a larger story to be told of this line-up's history. When Robert Fripp was asked to guest on the second Grinderman project, Nick Cave noted: "I wanted to work with Robert Fripp because he has done some of the most uniquely unsettling guitar work I have ever heard along with some of the most delicate and finessed" explained Cave. "I grew up listening to a lot of the King Crimson stuff. The vinyl copy of the phenomenal live album Earthbound, is one of my most treasured possessions."

"Earthbound is still going to jar listeners who are accustomed to the group's meticulous studio productions or the elegant, classically-oriented sound that they cultivated in that milieu; allowing for its limitations, however, it does represent the final incarnation of the longest lasting lineup of the early group, and a side of their work that was otherwise lost to posterity." Udo Lindenberg veröffentlicht seit 1971 Platten, hat über vier Jahrzehnte immer wieder den Nerv der Zeit getroffen und wie kaum ein anderer die Menschen emotional erreicht. Sein Werk ist Zeitgeschichte − unterhaltsam, politisch, romantisch und tiefgründig zugleich. So etwas schaffen nur sehr wenige Künstler. Seine Arbeit umfasst mehr als 40 Platten (Live- und Studioalben, sowie DVDs), und ein Großteil seines Werkes wurde nun für die Programm-Initiative "HighResAudio" neu in 24-Bit gemastert.

"Udo Lindenberg Mastered for HighResAudio" ist bis dato das umfangreichste Projekt, welches in Deutschland in dieses neue Format gebracht wurde. Das Ganze geschah in Düsseldorf, in der Skyline Tonfabrik, wo uns Peter "Jem" Seifert und Kai Blankenberg Einblicke in den Prozess und die Hintergründe des Projekts geben.

Die meisten Master waren auf 1/4″-Analogbändern. Warner Music und Universal haben uns ihr komplettes Archiv zugänglich gemacht. Alle Bänder liefen auf 38 cm/Sekunde, teilweise mit Dolby A aufgenommen. Das war schon ein irrer Moment, als wir das erste 1/4″-Band aufgelegt haben: Ball Pompös von 1974, in dem Jahr bin ich geboren! Es lief einwandfrei ohne Abrieb und klang tierisch: Gänsehaut! Nach wie vor eine meiner Lieblings-Udo-Platten.

Für jedes Band hat Oliver Gregor (Rockruepel) die Bandmaschine optimal neu eingemessen. Beim Aussteuern der Wandler haben wir auf ca. 6 dB Headroom geachtet und haben ganz leise oder laute Bänder mit einem analogen Verstärker etwas angehoben oder abgesenkt. So haben wir einerseits sichergestellt, immer so nah wie möglich am Originalsound zu bleiben, und hatten andererseits immer einen vergleichbaren Pegel bei den Audiofiles, was für ein schnelles und strukturiertes Arbeiten wichtig war.

Live in Brighton 1975 is the second in an ongoing series of officially released concert recordings by Can, which had previously only seen the light of day as bootlegs. Originating from the same year as the Stuttgart gig, issued earlier in 2021, the Brighton show is much in the same vein, containing 90 minutes' worth of numerically titled improvisations by the band's core lineup of Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay. While the group's albums were edited down from endless recording sessions, highlighting moments of sublime chemistry that might've sounded like they were planned ahead of time even though they weren't, this is an unfiltered document of the band's free-form live powers, demonstrating their creative process in real time. There's a fair number of meandering moments, but the parts that actually go places are something to behold. "Drei" takes a few minutes to hit on an agile rhythm that effortlessly sprints forward, capturing a lighter-than-air sensation. "Vier" erupts with explosive drumming, shredding guitar noise, and uncontrolled synth flashes before launching into a ragged, volatile rhythm that feels like it could topple over and combust at any second. The synths throughout the opening minutes of "Sechs" emit silvery light, and after the musicians probe alien territory with several minutes of minimalist scraping and buzzing, a beat forms, making the music sound like it's finally standing upright. "Sieben" happens upon traces of the shimmering organ and funky backbeat of "Vitamin C," arguably the group's signature tune, suggesting that the band had something resembling a live repertoire, but of course it's taken in a much different direction here, starting out slow and smoothed out before revving up and gradually expanding and taking flight. Perhaps even more intriguing are the moments during the set that seem to echo songs that hadn't been written yet, like the brief presence of a chord sequence in "Zwei" that resembles that of the Fall's own Can tribute, "I Am Damo Suzuki." These prescient flashes serve as a reminder that Can were nothing if not ahead of their time, and that there's still much to be gained from uncovering previously obscure corners of their body of work.

USA was recorded towards the end of King Crimson's final US tour of the 70s in June 1974. It was issued as an epitaph for the band in Spring 1975 as a single album - at a time when doubles or even triple live albums were more considered the norm for live releases. Deleted towards the end of the vinyl era in the mid-80s, it remained unreleased in the album era until the expanded edition was finally issued in October 2002. In common with much of Crimson's output, it was not well received at the time by critics, though its critical reputation grew immeasurably in the intervening years to the point where a review of the '21st Century Guide to King Crimson' boxed set in 2004 identified the album as the point ".where Fripp maps out the guitar blueprint for the entire post-punk movement."

Several months after the innovative remake of 'You Keep Me Hanging On,' England's answer to Vanilla Fudge, was this early version of Deep Purple, which featured vocalist Rod Evans, and bassist Nick Simper, along with mainstays Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. This, their second album, followed on the heels of 'Hush,' a dynamic arrangement of a Joe South tune, far removed from the flavor of one of his own hits, 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes.' Four months later, this album's cover of Neil Diamond's Top 25, 1967 gem 'Kentucky Woman,' went Top 40 for Deep Purple. Also like Vanilla Fudge, the group's own originals were creative, thought-provoking, but not nearly as interesting as their take on cover tunes. Vanilla Fudge did 'Eleanor Rigby,' and Deep Purple respond by going inside 'We Can Work It Out' -- it falls out of nowhere after the progressive rock jam 'Exposition,' Ritchie Blackmore's leads zipping in between Rod Evans smooth and precise vocals. As Vanilla Fudge was progressively leaning more towards psychedelia, here Deep Purple are the opposite. The boys claim to be inspired by the Bard of King Arthur's court in Camelot, Taliesyn. John Vernon Lord, under the art direction of Les Weisbrich, paints a superb wonderland on the album jacket, equal to the madness of Hieronymous Bosch's cover painting used for the third album. Originals 'The Shield' and 'Anthem' make early Syd Barrett Pink Floyd appear punk in comparison. Novel sounds are aided by Lord's dominating keyboards, a signature of this group.

„Though 'The Anthem' is more intriguing than the heavy metal thunder of Machine Head, it is overwhelmed by the majesty of their 'River Deep, Mountain High' cover, definitely not the inspiration for the Supremes and Four Tops 1971 hit version. By the time 1972 came around, Deep Purple immersed themselves in dumb lyrics, unforgettable riffs, and a huge presence, much like Black Sabbath. The evolution from progressive to hard rock was complete, but a combination of what they did here -- words that mattered matched by innovative musical passages -- would have been a more pleasing combination. Vanilla Fudge would cut Donovan's 'Season of the Witch,' Deep Purple followed this album by covering his 'Lalena'; both bands abandoned the rewrites their fans found so fascinating. Rod Evans voice was subtle enough to take 'River Deep, Mountain High' to places Ian Gillam might have demolished." (Joe Viglione, AMG)

The beauty of Roxette is that the duo of Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson can do practically anything in terms of Top 40 music. From the quiet desperation of "Spending My Time" to the chanting carnival of "Joyride" to the folky "Church of Your Heart," they bring a worldliness to their lyrics and melodies that most pop A-listers don't even have the imagination to dream of. This, the follow-up to their breakthrough disc, Look Sharp!, sees through on what that collection hinted at, meaning most of the songs sound like they were designed to be hit singles, not just filler between two or three good cuts. "The Big L," "Soul Deep," and "Hotblooded" all follow in the successful vein Gessle and Fredriksson mined with "The Look," while "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)," an insistent rock ballad, and the accordion-driven "Perfect Day" take things down a notch. The low-key "Watercolours in the Rain" and the whining "(Do You Get) Excited?" are the only cuts that keep the album from being a total success. For the most part, though, this is two pop artists at the top of their game.

The mesmerizing leads of legendary guitarist Ruyter Suys leap off the grooves and grab the listener by the throat. As an event, Depeche Mode's huge (attendance around 60,000) Los Angeles Rose Bowl concert in 1988 remains legendary; no single artist show had totally sold out the venue since eight years beforehand, while the film documentary done by Dylan-filmer D.A. Pennebaker based around the show clearly demonstrated fans' intense commitment to a near-decade-old band most mainstream critics continued to stupidly portray as a flash-in-the-pan synth pop effort. This start-to-final-encore record of the concert showcases a band perfectly able to carry its music from studio to stage as well as any other combo worth its salt should be able to do. Understandably focused on Music for the Masses material, the album shows Depeche experimenting with alternate arrangements at various points for live performance; big numbers like "Never Let Me Down Again," "Stripped," and "Blasphemous Rumors" pack even more of a wallop here. Slower numbers and more than a couple of ballads help to vary the hit-packed set, including a fine "Somebody" and "The Things You Said" combination sung by Martin Gore. "Pleasure Little Treasure," on record an okay B-side, becomes a monster rocker live, the type of unexpected surprise one could expect from a solid band no matter what the music. With a triumphant set of closing numbers, including magnificent takes on "Never Let Me Down Again," "Master and Servant," and the set-ending "Everything Counts," with what sounds like the entire audience singing the chorus well after the song has finally ended, 101 does far better at its task than most might have guessed.

Due to the underachievement of their exceptional 1982 comeback album, Creatures of the Night, Kiss knew the time was right to drop the makeup, so in September 1983 the band shocked their fans by unmasking on MTV. Their first non-makeup album, Lick It Up, followed soon after and successfully re-established the band among the heavy metal masses worldwide. Kiss also reconnected with their stateside fans -- Lick It Up was the band's first record to achieve gold status since 1980's Kiss Unmasked. The album's success was spurred by MTV's repeated airing of the imaginative video for the album's strong title track, and songs such as "Exciter," "Not for the Innocent," "A Million to One," and the rap-rocker "All Hell's Breaking Loose" confirmed that the band was back on the right track. Vinnie Vincent again proved to be a worthy replacement to original guitarist Ace Frehley but would unfortunately leave the band after the completion of the Lick It Up worldwide tour (eventually resurfacing with the Vinnie Vincent Invasion in the late '80s). Lick It Up is undoubtedly Kiss' best non-makeup album.

Can's experimentation and willingness to take unprecedented risks touched every aspect of their music. The Krautrock legends' innovative approach to studio albums produced some of the most exciting results of the entire era of rock music they existed in, but the foundation for their studio brilliance was in their otherworldly powers as a live entity. Live in Stuttgart 1975 captures some of this live magic, documenting the entirety of a 90-minute-long, fully improvised concert made up of five lengthy jams. For the most part, the performances are high-energy and intricate and the band sounds almost supernaturally communicative. Instead of taking turns soloing over sleepy blues-based vamps, Can swing between complex modes that they explore restlessly. Sometimes they'll break into what sounds like familiar material -- a rhythm or a riff that starts to sound like something from Tago Mago -- but these hints of structure never fully materialize. Throughout the set, Can is determined to go new places. The band had just recorded their sixth LP, Landed, which at that point combined both their most high-tech production and their most straightforward jam band material. Some of that excessive jam focus comes through on Stuttgart 1975. The cautious intro to "Zwei" (the album's five pieces are titled with German numerals) has the same lazy shuffle and prismatic guitar noodling as the Grateful Dead during their live sets. That mellowness lasts only a moment before taking one of many quick turns to wilder territory. There are some parallels to the ungrounded freeform of electric Miles Davis and Hendrix's raw live recordings, but there's also some integration of early synthesizers and a rhythmic presence that sounds like Can and Can alone. Whether locked into an airtight groove or exploring noisy chaos, the band moves as a singular organism that doesn't let up for a second. Their studio albums solidified Can's reputation as one of the most important and groundbreaking bands of their time, but Stuttgart 1975 exemplifies how that creative spirit translated to the stage, highlighting yet another side of Can's limitless ability.

King Crimson reborn yet again -- the then-newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and his Mellotron, which is pushed into the background. The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail-end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup. And John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit, working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering yet melodic bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes. ~ Bruce Eder

A tie-in to the exhaustive 2013 box set Sound System, the 2013 compilation The Clash Hits Back is a novel approach to a career retrospective: it mirrors the 24-song set list for the band's July 19, 1982 concert at Brixton Fairdeal, then adds eight bonus hits at the end. The Clash Hits Back slightly tweaks the running order of the original set -- "Bankrobber" arrived five songs into the concert but appears eighth here -- but that doesn't matter much, as this swap doesn't alter the impact of the original set. The Clash were plugging Combat Rock so songs from that LP -- the singles "Rock the Casbah," "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" and "Straight to Hell," plus "Ghetto Defendant" and "Know Your Rights," adding up to just under half the album -- sit alongside a heavy chunk of London Calling and early hits, plus a few stabs at Sandinista!. What's added at the end is a mix of their high-octane early material ("White Riot," "Complete Control," "Clash City Rockers," Tommy Gun," "English Civil War") and their more adventurous studio recordings ("The Call Up," "Hitsville UK," "This Is Radio Clash"), adding up to a strong overview of all the band could do.

The Darkness just released a brand new live album called 'Streaming Of A White Christmas'. The recording was taken from the band's streaming Christmas show on the 18th of December 2020.

The concert starts with the "new" and beautifully weird Rock And Roll Deserves To Die and from there it will be a good mix of old classics and more recent songs. Of course, lots of classics from Permission to land like Black Shuck, Growing on me, Get Your Hands Off My Woman.

Justin and Dan Hawkins on "electronic guitars", Frankie Poullain on "electronic bass" and not new anymore Rufus Taylor on drums are a reality in the Hard Rock world and one of the best live bands around, combining great music and irony but without being a parody. Streaming Of A White Christmas is a very enjoyable live album, very well played, with some impromptu, with a very communicative frontman despite the fact the concert was with no audience. If you like the band, you will like it for sure.

Following up on, and in many ways amending, much of the bombastic overcompensation of 2007's Zeitgeist, Smashing Pumpkins 2012 release Oceania is an exuberant, gloriously melodic, fluid return to form for Billy Corgan. While Zeitgeist certainly contained many of the elements that make for a classic Smashing Pumpkins release -- including slabs of distorted guitars, passionate vocals, and poetic lyrics, not to mention drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who was the sole remaining original member besides Corgan and who subsequently left the band -- there was something cold and perhaps a bit too calculated about the production. Ultimately, Zeitgeist didn't do much to dissuade audiences that Corgan, undeniably the mastermind behind the best Pumpkins work, was now overvaluing his abilities in an attempt to recapture fans disillusioned by his various side projects. Thankfully, none of these concerns are applicable to Oceania. Ostensibly an "album within an album" of the greater 44-track Teargarden by Kaleidyscope concept project, Oceania works as a stand-alone album. Conceptual conceits aside, these are some of the most memorable and rousing songs Corgan has delivered since 1993's Siamese Dream, the album that Oceania most closely mirrors in tone and aesthetic. Which isn't to say that Corgan is treading old ground; on the contrary, there is something fresh and inspired about the songs on Oceania. Admittedly, kicking the album off with the heavy psychedelic acid rock groove of "Quasar" -- in which Corgan croons several EST-era-style affirmations including, "God right on! Krishna right on! Mark right on!" -- is a move that almost begs comparisons to Smashing Pumpkins' euphoria-inducing 1991 single "Siva." A similar sentiment comes to mind with the latter album rocker "The Chimera," a classic rock-sounding groover that sparkles with crisscross laser-beam guitar lines recalling the jewel-toned guitar heroics of Queen's Brian May. But these are welcome comparisons, born out of Corgan finally delivering a gorgeous and cohesive set of songs that balance some his more arch, cerebral inclinations with his generously romantic and sweepingly cinematic gift for revelatory guitar rock. Elsewhere, we get the soaring "Panopticon" and the minor-key, prog rock-inflected drama of "Violet Rays." However, Oceania is perhaps best represented by the euphoric mid-album ballad "Pinwheels." Starting with a repeated keyboard line and building to swells of acoustic and electric guitar before settling into one of the most swoon-worthy melodic anthems Corgan has ever written, "Pinwheels," much like the rest of Oceania, is a masterpiece of pop songcraft and rock production. As Corgan croons on the song's chorus, "Sister soul, lovers of the tune, sing!/I got you/I got you." On Oceania, the Smashing Pumpkins definitely have us.
