Blending the worlds of fiction, poetry and songwriting, John Darnielle is that rare creative engine who sprouts more ideas and grows more intense the longer he runs. Leading the Mountain Goats since the mid-1990s, Darnielle has developed a second career as a much-praised novelist, adept at creating lasting characters like Jenny who first appeared in her titular track on the 2002 Mountain Goats album, All Hail West Texas. Here she's been elevated to a figure from ancient mythology due to her penchant for caring for a house full of strangers looking to find themselves. Sadly, her charity has become a burden and made her, in Darnielle's words, "someone on the verge of an unimaginable tragedy whose signs and portents will not make themselves known to her until she finds herself amidst the wreckage." Eventually, Jenny cracks and flees. It's a narrative you can follow or ignore because both music and lyrics are superb.

Produced by Trina Shoemaker, and tracked at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band once known for lo-fi recordings done on a boombox presents an elaborate production with admirably clear and logical sound. Vocals are pushed forward and horns are given a prominent place in the mix set to snappy, upbeat tempos, played to perfection by bandmates bassist Peter Hughes, multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, and drummer Jon Wurster; the well-oiled machine is as nimble as their rare animal namesake.

The foursome rock out hard in "Murder at the 18th St. Garage." "Only One Way" is the kind of hooky guitar pop that's fast becoming extinct. Douglas' saxophone and trombone by guest Evan Ringel add a happy edge and a triumphant turn to "Fresh Tattoo." Set to a brisk rhythm, "Cleaning Crew" opens with the same descending chords as The Who's "Baba O'Riley" but then turns funky thanks once again to horn snorts. Like most of the music here, it also contains Darnielle's spry wordcraft: "I saw the future in an oil slick/ It told me what I needed to know/ Leave a little stain behind/ Everywhere you go." Italian progressive metal masters DGM release their long awaited 11th studio album, "Life" this November. It follows the band's acclaimed release of "Tragic Separation" in 2020.
"Life" comes as the culmination of 2 years work in which the band's mainman Simone Mularoni, wrote a wealth of musical material from which the songs that compose "Life" were chosen. The songs show clearly the desire to push the band beyond any previous boundaries and to build more of their own personal identity and approach. Truly, no small feat given the band's catalog!
All the trademark elements of DGM's sound can be found in this new album with sweeping choruses, technical passages, lightning fast fretwork, big vocals and bombastic transitions, but the care and the dedication to the songwriting emerges in phenomenal songs which carefully encompass everything that goes from Symphony X to a more classic hard rock sound. The playing is faultless as usual and the melodies are perfectly woven into the killer guitars, epic keyboards, and pounding drums. The line-up is more gelled and cohesive than ever but a special mention goes, beyond Mularoni's pyrotechnic guitar playing, to singer Mark Basile who truly dominates the musical material like a helmsman on a stormy night. Simply outstanding!
Watch out for DGM, they are not only Italy's finest, but an absolute astounding force to be reckoned with in the international Progressive Metal scene and with "Life" they offer their listeners their most fast and heavy, dense and intense, platter of progressive power metal to date.

"It was so much fun and such a pleasure bringing this album into the world of Dolby Atmos. That being said, it was truly a team effort with everyone from the TSO Team including Dave Wittman, Jon Tucker, and mastering engineer, Michael Romanowski of Coast Mastering."

A product of the imagination of TSO's late founder Paul O'Neill, "The Ghosts of Christmas Eve" follows the journey of a runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater on December 24th. While seeking shelter from the cold, the teen is discovered by the theater's caretaker who uses the ghosts and spirits from the building's past to turn her life around. Musically, the rock opera features such enduring hits and fan-favorites as "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," "O' Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy," "Christmas Canon," "Music Box Blues," "Promises To Keep," and "This Christmas Day."

The band is also performing The Ghosts of Christmas Eve live on their annual holiday tour for 2023, "The Ghosts of Christmas Eve - the Best of TSO & More."

TEMIC are just one album in, but to reach this point, this supergroup had to navigate quite the career maze. These guys have played with Devin Townsend, Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress, Neal Morse, SHINING and Maraton. But it wasn't until the world shut down in 2020, that keyboardist Diego Tejedia and guitarist Eric Gillette got around to starting a band together.

Their idea wasn't exactly simple: orchestrate their love for high-energy electronica and killer melodies into a modern prog-metal band. But by recruiting vocalist Fredrik Klemp and Simen Sandnes on drums, Temic manage to pull that concept off

Terror Management Theory is layered with twists and turns. "Count Your Losses" crushes out tech riffs by the ton, while "Falling Away" drifts down a blackhole of starry-eyed synths. At the end of this labyrinthine album lies "Mothalah", a seven-minute epic that never stops reaching for the sky, led by heroic falsetto.
