5X5 Live features five songs from each of the band's first five albums plus bonus tracks, as the band played slightly differing sets in different cities. The tour, which took place between 14th February and 4th March, saw the band playing sets that included songs from the albums: Life In A Day, Real To Real Cacophony, Empires and Dance, Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call and New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84), all of which were released in a prolific period from 1979 to 1982.

These five albums have had a massive cultural impact from the time of their release during the birth of the new wave electro scene in the late 1970s, through the dance revolution of the '80s and '90s, to the music of the Manic Street Preachers and the recent sound of The Horrors' Skying album, making them five of the most vital albums of the post-punk period and the last 35 years.

Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry's elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist, and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics. "More Than This," "Take a Chance with Me," "While My Heart Is Still Beating," and the title track are immaculately crafted and subtle songs, where the shifting synthesizers and murmured vocals gradually reveal the melodies. It's a rich, textured album and a graceful way to end the band's career.

For their first album in 18 years, Tears for Fears sound completely revitalized and as beautiful and engaging as ever. Remarkably, it's fueled in part by the 2017 death of Roland Orzabal's wife and partner of many years and his denial about losing her. "I think that when you've been close to someone for decades, they are living within you as well as without," he has said. "And consciously I did not believe she would die, though subconsciously I was, without doubt, preparing for the inevitable, arming myself against the future shock." The title track is shimmering and mysterious, with strident drums and alien beeps but also vocals like a soothing balm. "Winter done, they'll soon be gone/ From this unforgiving place/ To that vague and distant void/ Where the sunlight splits the eye," Orzabal sings of that threshold from life to death. It is heartbreaking, but also hopeful. "Please Be Happy" is incredibly candid-and one of their prettiest tracks: "These days it's like a wave is breaking over you/ Dragging you in with the undertow/ If you lay among the graves you will see other ghosts." And "No Small Thing," about facing the heartbreak of losing your love, is a stunner. Stripped-back acoustic guitar builds to the dreamy psychedelia Tears for Fears has always done so well, the whole thing swelling to a bursting-the-seams crescendo by the end. "Long, Long, Long Time" shows how the duo have always been masters of dynamics, its hymn-like organ giving way to a monster chorus; the song also reminds you just how much Sam Smith owes Curt Smith for their angelic style. "Master Plan" giddily dips into the band's longtime love of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, and "Break the Man" is catchy jangle pop touched with moody strings. "My Demons," meanwhile, is a nasty piece of work, in the best way (one akin to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), with Orzabal drilling the doomed lyrics: "Why is my name in lights when my name is spelled wrong . People always find you when your cell phone is on." Smith comes in to sweeten up the chorus, but he sounds thrillingly stretched to his limits as the rhythm gallops like a sweating horse. Denied access to her band members during lockdown, this amazing follow-up to 2019's debut solo effort has been lovingly crafted by Rosalie together with her partner Rosco Wilson, and the creative juices have most certainly been flowing. The only other contributor is the excellent Ric Sanders, fiddle player for Fairport Convention who appears at regular intervals, adding jaunty colour and depth. The psychedelic leanings of the debut are continued and extended here, and as usual, Rosalie's compositions twist and turn in unexpected directions several times in each song. She has an ear for detail, and was probably tempted to keep layering as ideas arose, but to her credit, she has allowed the music room to breathe, despite some complex arrangements.

So Two Piece Puzzle is definitely a step forward from the debut, and is easily her best work to date, and given the quality of previous songs, that is saying something. The obvious point of reference is The Beatles, and their influence abounds, and many other influences pop up along the way. There's a nod to Bowie in some of the quirky arrangements, a tip of the hat to Kate Bush, and moments which really remind me of the late great Randy California. To take these flavours and create a new and exciting recipe of her own is a tribute to her undoubted talent, and she is fast developing a very distinctive sound.

Recorded during lockdown, the process began with Neal Morse writing some acoustic songs that he thought would be enhanced by strong vocal harmonies. He already knew how well his voice blended with former Spock's Beard band-mate and Big Big Train drummer/ vocalist, Nick D'Virgilio who came on board and, considering a third man, the Americans sought out Haken's Ross Jennings from the UK to complete the trio. All three found they had songs that would benefit from the three part harmonic blend, and so they pooled their resources, inputting creatively into each others compositions.

Neal comments: "What a great pleasure it's been to work on this album with these amazing artists! It was kind of funny. We had been working on the songs remotely for several months before I finally heard all of us singing together at the same time. The first time I brought the faders up, I knew we had the magic!"

Nick adds: "I've known and worked with Neal for over 30 years and I've been a big fan of Ross and the music he makes for a long time. I felt confident right away that this would be a fun project to be a part of. I was so right."

Ross comments: "Receiving 'The Call' from Neal to participate in this project was somewhat of a prayer answered. As a long time fan of their work, I've been singing along to Neal's & Nick's records for years, so it felt really natural for my voice to slot right in."

The tracks took shape with the musicians recording all of the music and vocals separately, yet the eclectic performances burst with the energy and excitement of the collaboration. Acoustic anthems, charged rockers and sensitive ballads are all part of the mix, and the unique blend of Ross, Neal and Nick's voices and styles have created an album in which you will encounter these musicians in a way you've never heard before.

Around seven years after the first release of his main band RPWL, the guitarist, songwriter, label and studio operator and producer Kalle Wallner launched his solo project Blind Ego in order to set up another easel for his extremely high creative output on which he can put his Can paint musical paintings.

If he celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the band's debut "God Has Failed" almost exactly a year ago with RPWL, that is no reason for a driven person like Wallner to rest on his many laurels. It simply does not correspond to his nature. His new solo album "Voices" proves that this is not a platitude or a presumption."

'Voices' is fifty minutes of utterly immersive music that really gets under your skin, there is an immediate need to listen to this bewitching album again. At times mesmerising and at others thunderously magnetic, I'd say it's possibly this enigmatic musician's finest piece of work in his twenty-six year career, it really is that good!

When the Scorpions finally broke through to the mainstream in 1982, RCA released numerous compilations of the band's earlier work from the '70s. By no means should one think The Best of the Scorpions is for diehards only -- the music here is quite enjoyable. RCA would go on to release several more Scorpions compilations (Best Of, Vol. 2, Hot & Heavy, Best of Rockers 'n' Ballads, etc.), but the original Best Of is still the wisest purchase.

Without Brian Eno, Roxy Music immediately became less experimental, yet they remained adventurous, as Stranded illustrates. Under the direction of Bryan Ferry, Roxy moved toward relatively straightforward territory, adding greater layers of piano and heavy guitars. Even without the washes of Eno's synthesizers, Roxy's music remains unsettling on occasion, yet in this new incarnation, they favor more measured material, whether it's the reflective "A Song for Europe" or the shifting textures of "Psalm." Even the rockers, such as the surging "Street Life" and the segmented "Mother of Pearl," are distinguished by subtle songwriting that emphasizes both Ferry's tortured glamour and Roxy's increasingly impressive grasp of sonic detail.

Despite forming in 2016, it was not until 2020 when VENATOR made their recorded debut with the EP Paradiser. Nevertheless, the three songs contained therein were an incredibly auspicious first start, showing VENATOR as a band seemingly thawed out from 1983, so authentic and skyward was their songwriting. Wrapped in a uniquely retro-futuristic production, Paradiser pointed the way forward for VENATOR, and the buzz began to build.

Now, that buzz is gonna boil over with the band's full-length debut, Echoes From the Gutter. Graced with yet another amazingly era-authentic artwork courtesy of frontman Hans Huemer, Echoes From the Gutter takes the melody and moodiness of its no-less-inconsiderable predecessor to uncharted heights (and depths!) of glory, both grimy and gleaming. Right from the record's very first seconds, VENATOR burst and bristle with an electricity that's positively, stunningly addicting; ANTHEM after ANTHEM is doled out with almost laissez-faire ease, each hook hoisted heavenly and then brought back down to - yes - the gutter. It's the kind of album that walks that fine line between street-level and upwardly-mobile, much like heavy metal's forerunning bands of the early 1980s, when the landscape of conquest from club to stadium was still a special dream. Or, simply submit to the emotive vocals of Huemer, whose heart-on-sleeve clarity commands his bandmates onward, they in kind delivering a truly impassioned performance that encompasses many speeds and many moods, but always with those HOOKS front and center - and fucking GODLY solos! On Roxy Music's debut, the tensions between Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry propelled their music to great, unexpected heights, and for most of the group's second album, For Your Pleasure, the band equals, if not surpasses, those expectations. However, there are a handful of moments where those tensions become unbearable, as when Eno wants to move toward texture and Ferry wants to stay in more conventional rock territory; the nine-minute "The Bogus Man" captures such creative tensions perfectly, and it's easy to see why Eno left the group after the album was completed. Still, those differences result in yet another extraordinary record from Roxy Music, one that demonstrates even more clearly than the debut how avant-garde ideas can flourish in a pop setting. This is especially evident in the driving singles "Do the Strand" and "Editions of You," which pulsate with raw energy and jarring melodic structures. Roxy also illuminate the slower numbers, such as the eerie "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," with atonal, shimmering synthesizers, textures that were unexpected and innovative at the time of its release. Similarly, all of For Your Pleasure walks the tightrope between the experimental and the accessible, creating a new vocabulary for rock bands, and one that was exploited heavily in the ensuing decade.

All bets regarding Abel Tesfaye's career arc were off once Trilogy, material previously released at no (financial) cost to the listener, went platinum. For a period after that, it seemed like the singer had peaked just short of pop-star status. His eager congregation pushed Kiss Land, the proper debut, to number two in the U.S., yet none of its singles, not even the one that featured Drake, reached the Hot 100. "Love Me Harder," a duet with labelmate Ariana Grande released in 2014, proved to be a masterstroke. It put Tesfaye in the Top Ten for the first time and began a streak of similarly effective singles that preceded -- and are included on -- Beauty Behind the Madness. "Earned It," a ballad recorded for the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, showed that he could adapt to a traditional pop backdrop. That cut a path for "The Hills," in which Tesfaye alleviated his "day one" base with a typically degenerate slow jam, co-produced by Illangelo, that affirmed "When I'm fucked up, that's the real me" while taking the toxic narrative a step further with lines like "Drugs started feelin' like it's decaf." And then "Can't Feel My Face," a sleek slice of retro-modern disco-funk produced by Max Martin and Ali Payami, landed in June 2015. An obvious pop move, it worked -- it went to number one in the U.S. and several other territories. Tesfaye skillfully delivered his biggest hooks as he sang about dependency in that part-anguished, part-euphoric fashion derived from Michael Jackson. Like its advance singles, the rest of Beauty Behind the Madness is R&B and pop as drug-den paella: chemical and sexual abasement, self-loathing, and self-absorbed belligerence over narcotized sludge and less expected moves that peak with the wholly sweet "As You Are" and crest with a big-band diversion on "Losers." Collaborations with Kanye West, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey add star power; the last of that pack contributes to a moment where Tesfaye turns another corner by acknowledging a dead end through the fog, "addicted to a life that's so empty and so cold." The commercial strides are obvious. The creative advancements are less apparent, but they're in there.

Founded nearly thirty years ago, eclectic collective Amorphis has extensively reigned as one of the most iconic and fascinating names in modern Finnish metal. Starting out as more of a traditional death metal act, they eventually came to incorporate varied vocal and instrumental styles-namely, progressive and folk techniques-that yield cleverly multifaceted achievements. The same holds true for their thirteenth studio outing, Queen of Time. The new album is a far more engrossing, consistent, and inspired record than it has any right to be. Frankly, few bands ever release something this outstanding this far into their careers.

Amorphis deserves some credit simply for keeping its original core members of Jan Rechberger (drums), Tomi Koivusaari (guitars), Olli-Pekka Laine (bass), and Esa Holopainen (guitars) intact after all this time. Additionally, Santeri Kallio (keyboards) and Tomi Jousten (clean vocals) complete the line-up. According to the group, the LP distinguishes itself by including "real strings, flutes, orchestral arrangements, and even choirs" as it "provides a ground-breaking epic about the rise and fall of civilization. about the cosmic powers that people believed in long ago in a very universal way." Helping them bring their vision to life once again is legendary producer Jens Bogren, as well as several guests: saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby (Shining) and singers Chrigel Glanzmann (Eluveitie), Albert Kuvezin (Yat-Kha) and Anneke van Giersbergen (VUUR). Together, they take listeners on a methodically astounding aural journey that surely ranks as an apex of the entire Amorphis catalog.

Steamrolling into the end of 2021, the Kris Barras Band have announced their brand-new album, Death Valley Paradise, along with their most anthemic, call-to-arms song to date, with its riotous Purge-esque video in "My Parade."

Produced by Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow, SiKth) and recorded at VADA Studios in Alcester, they return heavier, darker, more introspective but enormous at the same time. In their twenty plus year career, the Swedish power metal band Sabaton has written about wars and battles from various eras of history. Their previous album, 2019's The Great War, was about World War I. That's also the case with their latest studio effort The War to End All Wars. So why did they decide to revisit World War I?

According to vocalist Joakim Brodén, there were still stories left untold. "In some cases," he explains, "we just didn't have the right music, and there were specific stories we had wanted to tell, like 'The Christmas Truce' and 'Hellfighters.' Also, once we went on tour in support of The Great War, we met and heard from so many fans who told us about other great WW1 stories we'd never heard before, stories that were just so good, we kept asking ourselves, 'how did we miss this?'"

Sabaton's blend of rousing music and interesting lyrical topics has made them a successful band. They follow a musical template that has served them well, deviating enough with each new release to keep things interesting. That's what they have done with The War to End All Wars. Opener "Sarajevo" sets the stage, featuring narration about the beginning of World War I. It has both subdued cinematic parts and a memorable chorus that's a slight variation of the album title. It also features extended instrumental breaks. It's somewhere between an intro and a traditional song.

Sabaton shifts to more traditional power metal beginning with the uptempo "Stormtroopers." They feature some interesting moments and people of World War I on this album. "The Unkillable Soldier" is about Sir Adrian Carton De Wiart, who suffered gunshot wounds to several different body parts and was involved in numerous plane crashes, but fought on. "Hellfighters" spotlights the 369th regiment that was mainly African American and Puerto Rican soldiers, while "Lady of the Dark" is about Milunka Savić, a Serbian woman who took her brother's place in the army and became one of the war's most decorated soldiers.

One unique thing about this album is that in addition to songs about battles and heroism, there's a track about peace. On Christmas morning of 2014, British and German soldiers left their trenches and met in no-man's land to wish each other a merry Christmas, take photos and even exchange gifts. "Christmas Truce" recounts this brief moment of peace and harmony. It's the mellowest song on the album, though there are moments of bombast.

The War To End All Wars is streamlined, while still being epic in scope and attitude. It covers a lot of ground in just 45 minutes. Shifts in tempo and intensity keep the album flowing nicely, with a big, crisp production. It's guitar driven, but choirs and atmosphere provide additional depth. It is similar to The Great War, but manages to carve its own path. The music and lyrics are both compelling.

You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy Sabaton's music. But those who are can dig even deeper into the subjects of the songs. Thought the band has a YouTube channel called Sabaton History that takes deep dives into the background of dozens of their songs, including "Christmas Truce" and "Soldier of Heaven" from this album. Which is always helpful.

Blackout was Scorpions' first highly successful album, due to its clever balance of pop/rock (the title track), power ballads ("When the Smoke Is Going Down"), and catchy heavy metal ("Dynamite," "No One Like You"). Vocalist Klaus Meine had a throat operation prior to the record's release, and surprisingly, his voice sounds more melodic and lively than ever. The rest of the band sounds great as well, and the album is highlighted by the fast-paced performances of guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs. Blackout has been called Scorpions' best record ever, and that statement is not unjust. "No One Like You" gave the band its first chart hit.

Halsey opens Hopeless Fountain Kingdom by reading a passage from William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, a sign that they're intent on achieving grand things with their second album. The time is right for a great leap forward. Badlands, their 2014 debut, established Halsey as a possible contender for Lorde's brooding throne, but they received their breakthrough singing on the Chainsmokers' smash 2016 single "Closer." Both events inform Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which casts a far wider net than Badlands. Where that album essentially dedicates itself to EDM-inspired pop, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom uses that sound as an anchor that allows Halsey to dip their toe into stark singer/songwriter confessions ("Sorry"), hip-hop ("Lie," featuring a verse by Quavo of Migos), soul ("Alone"), and a healthy dose of pop songs designed for mass exposure. It's a slight shift, but it's notable particularly because it helps differentiate the songs from one another. This doesn't always happen -- the first half of the record tends to bleed together into one pulsating neon smear -- but when the melodies are sharply articulated and the production not so cloistered, the tracks seem distinct, even memorable. "Alone," a foray into smooth soul, is chief among these cuts, rivaled by the soaring "Bad at Love" and "Strangers," where Halsey laments that their lover "doesn't kiss me on the mouth anymore." Same-sex love songs remain a rarity in the pop music of the 2010s, and while that's a sly reveal of how Halsey represents a generational shift, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom as a whole feels quintessentially 2017 in how it jumbles styles and sentiment, streamlining a teeming, contradictory culture into something smooth, glassy and easy to digest.

Cleveland Calling PT. 2 is an unreleased radio session recovered from the depths of the Rory Gallagher archives. This recording features Rory and his band playing seven songs live in an empty Cleveland Agora venue for WNCR Radio. This release follows the RSD Drops 2020 release Cleveland Calling (#2 on the Billboard Blues chart) which was an acoustic session also recorded by WNCR during the same 1972 US tour.
