A Templar's Tale is my most ambitious album to date and has been in the works for over 12 months.

The music harks back to Classic 70s Progressive Rock and is a concept album, along similar lines to Rick Wakeman's King Arthur and Journey to the Centre of the Earth - complete with a narrator.

The narrator is Sir Geoffrey de Beaumont, a fictitious Templar, who recounts the Templar's Tale, interspersed with songs sung by myself and epic orchestral and choir arrangements, as well as more traditional rock instrumentation

On his 11th solo-album 'Mihlstones' German producer/guitarist/singer Andy Susemihl proclaims his music can be described as 'sophisticated global rock'. Andy continues the path that he started earlier on albums such as 'Elevation', 'Alienation' and his most recent 'Rapture' (from 2022). . What they all had in common was the fact that they all had a great production and that there was a pleasant variation in the music. Rockers, ballads, heavy songs, all sounding good at any time of the day, also because of Andy's mesmerizing vocals.

Most of the time Andy, who has been around for several decades in the German rock scene with bands such as Sinner and U.D.O. (just to name a few), could rely on the help of musical friends such as former Accept bass man Peter Baltes, or Magnum's Dennis Ward. This time he decided to make the whole affair a real solo effort by doing everything himself. Only for the drum sound he got some help from a friend with the programming. And he has succeeded in his plan.

'Mihlstones' is a cool mix between hard rocking tracks such as opener ,,Freakshow'', ,,Breaking The Silence'' and ,,En Route To Babylon'' with some 'sophisticated' rock tracks such as ,,End Of The Road'', ,,Going Home'' and ,,Summertime Blues''. The songs on this album are defined by a few things. First there is this crystal-clear yet feisty guitar sound that is spread all over the album. Second is the overall sound and atmosphere of the album. Third is the pleasant singing voice of Andy. He is not a singer by trade but has worked with so many top-notch vocalists from each one he heard certain specifics that he as time went on started to integrate into his own style of singing.

Over the past two decades, Richard Dawson has established his unique songwriting voice with some core consistent qualities. He builds his songs around simple repeating guitar parts, with lyrical narratives defining their structure and development. These melodies and stories form repeating sections-often with alternating parts that function as unconventional verses and choruses-that stretch to lengths beyond conventional rock songs.

Dawson's vocals display impressive dexterity, alternating between a reedy, speech-like tenor and a higher register for melodic sections. While "Knot" features bombastic drumming and distorted guitar, most of End of the Middle surrounds Dawson's unique writing and singing with sparer arrangements.

His impressive storytelling, which attracts devoted fans who memorize these complex narratives and sing along at his concerts, is highly detailed. Opener "Bolt" is the tale of a house being struck by lightning that begins with the context of mundane activities: "I'm in the hall on the phone/ Jen's in her room watching neighbors." Once lightning strikes, the wordplay gains a richness ("Cacophony of barking dog and burglar alarm/ A scorch mark in the center of my trembling palm") and the guitar and drums build in intensity to match the obvious stress in the home. "Boxing Day Sales" places the narrator and his friend under a store's awning on a frigid December day. A phrase in his conversation turns into a slant rhyme: "Are things any better between you and Tom/ I'm so tired of hearing these awful Christmas songs."

Final track "More than real" leaps from the conventions that precede it. A keyboard replaces the guitar in creating the song's structure and tonality, and it's an unexpected duet between Dawson and Sally Pilkington's female voice. After leaving Mott the Hoople in early 1975, Ian Hunter quickly threw himself into recording this eponymous solo debut. Not surprisingly, it contains a lot of the glam rock charm of Hunter's old group: "The Truth, the Whole Truth, Nothing But the Truth" and "I Get So Excited" are fist-pumping tunes that combine punchy hard rock riffs with intelligent lyrics in a manner similar to Mott the Hoople's finest moments. However, Ian Hunter pulls off this grandiose sound without the overtly ornate production that defined the final Mott the Hoople albums because Mick Ronson's cleverly crafted arrangements manage to create a big wall of sound without utilizing a huge amount of instruments or overdubs. As a result, Ian Hunter's lyrics shine through in each song and show off his totally personalized mixture of attitude and intelligence: the legendary and oft-covered "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" is a cheeky, clever exploration of rock & roll's ability to corrupt the innocent, and "Boy" is a critique of a rocker who has allowed his pretensions to overpower his heart (many say this tune was aimed at fellow star and onetime Mott the Hoople producer David Bowie). Another highlight is "It Ain't Easy When You Fall," a moving tribute to a fallen friend that gracefully builds from delicate verses into a soaring chorus. The end result is a memorable debut album that gives listeners their hard rock fix and manages to engage their brains at the same time. Anyone interested in the finest moments of 1970s glam rock should give this classic a spin.
