With their third full-length, "One Way Trip", Boston, MA psychedelic hard rockers WORSHIPPER have perfected their grand balancing act between classic hard rock and old school heavy metal that is empowered to soar high with the injection of a healthy dose of psychedelia. One of the most influential heavy metal albums of the 1990s, Vulgar Display of Power is just what is says: a raw, pulverizing, insanely intense depiction of naked rage and hostility that drains its listeners and pounds them into submission. Even the "ballads," "This Love" and "Hollow," have thunderingly loud, aggressive chorus sections. Preaching power through strength and integrity, Phil Anselmo discards any further attempts at singing in favor of a militaristic bark and an unhinged roar, while the crystal-clear production sets Diamond Darrell's pummeling riffs against a rhythmic backdrop so thunderously supportive that Darrell often solos without underlying rhythm guitar parts. The album again follows Cowboys from Hell's strategy of stacking the best songs at the beginning and letting their momentum carry the listener through the rest, but the riffs and sonic textures are more consistently interesting this time around. Pantera's thick-sounding, post-hardcore power metal and outraged, testosterone-drenched intensity would help pave the way for alternative metal acts like Korn and Tool; Vulgar Display of Power is the best distillation of those virtues.

Category 7 feels like a similar unexpected alliance. A bunch of kick ass metal musicians got together, found they had some common interest and chemistry and set about creating a super record. And what a bunch. Among their credits are Armored Saint, Anthrax, Adrenaline Mob, Exodus, Machine Head, Overkill, Shadows Fall and Vio-lence. Supergroup? Sure. Category 7 feels remarkably cohesive as a record, drawing on their individual talents and history but also feeling remarkably fresh.
Here are five great metal musicians challenging themselves and each other to do something different to their usual. And every note on every song radiates that positive energy. It's the metal equivalent of going to do karate in the garage with your brother. No doubt they'll be busy with their other bands but Category 7 have the tunes to match their supergroup status.

Based in Sheffield, POHL is a stunning and brutal noise rock duo, featuring former Hey Colossus axeman Will Pearce on guitar/vocals, and drummer Dr Linda Westman of Toronto-based death metal two-piece, Old Hope.

Veering from biblical allusions to fragmented Burroughsian cut-ups, it is at once mystical, profane, sacred, and scatological. Profoundly stupid, perhaps?
