The twelfth album from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Unlimited Love, is notable for several reasons: Next year, the band will have been around for 40 years; it's their first since 2009 with on-again, off-again guitarist John Frusciante; and they've returned to producer Rick Rubin, who helmed their 1991 commercial breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The old gang sounds like they're having more fun than ever. "Aquatic Mouth Dance" is at once undeniably RHCP and also like nothing they've done before: With a breezy R&B chorus and a vibrant wash of brass, it's almost an Earth, Wind & Fire song; it's also Flea at his finest, delivering super-funky bass that shows why he's gone from being seen as a party doofus to earning real respect. A wild tribute to 1980s LA nightlife, the song name-drops John Doe, the Misfits, Billy Zoom, "the old Starwood" and the long-closed Cathay club where the band got its start, and even offers a self-referential wink to an old album: "Spilling beer is a good fountain/ Like the milk from a mother's tit." The band is also in a nostalgic mood on loose-limbed "Poster Child," a wah-inflected wordplay buffet: "Melle Mel and Richard Hell/ Were dancing at the Taco Bell/ When someone heard a rebel yell . Lizzy looking mighty thin/ The Thompsons had another twin . Steve Miller and Duran Duran/ A joker dancing in the sand." With its "ayo-ayo" chorus, "One Way Traffic" already feels like classic RHCP, as Anthony Kiedis laments his friends getting older and settling down: "Now they read them catalogs." (His escape? Driving down the PCH, music turned up, to a killer surf spot.) There are heavy moments-"These Are the Ways" is pure grunge; "Here Ever After" feels ominous; and "The Heavy Wing" lives up to its name with eye-watering guitar-and dreamy ones that showcase Frusciante's fluid touch (ballad "Not the One," the Steely Dan chill of "Let 'Em Cry," the slip-and-slide R&B of "She's a Lover"). There's even a song that does both, as "Whatchu Thinkin'" flies from pretty, slightly psyched-out melody to blissed-out jam. The band is also, after all these years, still able to evolve and surprise. "Bastards of Light" gets almost country before it crests in a grunge breakdown; "White Braids & Pillow Chair" is a slice of experimental weirdness, weaving in bits of gospel and rumbling Western scores. (The verdict is still out on Kiedis' Hiberno-meets-pirate affectation on the stomper "Black Summer.") Dirty Shirt is a top Romanian crossover folkcore metal band, winner of second place at the international final of Wacken Metal Battle 2014 and of several awards at Metalhead Awards and Maximum Rock Awards. The band's unique style derives from mixing the heavy sound of modern rock/metal with the festive ambiance of East-European traditional music, the eclecticism of world music (country, reggae, and tribal rhythms), the electro sound of industrial music, the energy of hardcore, and the groove of funk. "For me, personally, it's kind of been on my list of things to do for years. I didn't know if it was gonna be a solo album or a Gov't Mule record. Newly remastered of the wonderful 1976 album 'Marscape' by Jack Lancaster And Robin Lumley.

This excellent album was recorded and released in 1976 and was composed and conceived to mark the landing on Mars of Nasa's Viking 2 Explorer in September of that year.

For the sessions, saxophonist and woodwind player Jack Lancaster and keyboard player Robin Lumley were joined by John Goodsall on guitars, Percy Jones on bass and Phil Collins on drums.

The finished album was an incredible work and paved the way for the formation of the acclaimed group Brand X soon after.

This new edition of 'Marscape' has been remastered from newly discovered original master tapes.

"Lancaster is the former sax player in Blodwyn Pig, but this album is better-known for its side-players: Robin Lumley, John Goodsall, Percy Jones, Phil Collins, Morris Pert... in short, Brand X! Fans of Brand X actively search out this album expecting a pre-Brand X Brand X album. Well, yes and no. One can certainly hear the Brand X style in embryonic form on some songs, but we must remember, this is really Lancaster's show. Lancaster primarily plays sax, but he also plays a lot of Lyricon, an early wind synthesizer. Sometimes, it's hard to tell which synth lines were played by Lumley or Lancaster, although others have a definite "reedy" quality to their sound (i.e., you can tell by the phrasing that the notes came out of a wind instrument and not a keyboard). Other guest appearances include Penguin Cafe Orchestra mainstay Simon Jeffes on koto, while vocalist Bernie Frost graces some songs with his eerie falsetto, though none of the songs has any lyrics. The songs fall into two distinct categories: 1) Soft and atmospheric with gentle melodies expressed on sax/Lyricon/flute backed by Lumley's keyboards (usually piano) and 2) Jazz-fusion somewhat in the Mahavishnu mold with prominent sax and energetic rock backing. The latter passages are those which will be of greatest interest to Brand X fans, Percy Jones' distinctive bass playing being most prominent. One can't help but wonder if the program music on this album was perhaps originally intended to be a soundtrack of some sort. Worth getting if you know what to expect." (Mike Ohman)

On Time is the debut studio album by American rock band Grand Funk Railroad. The album was released on August 25, 1969, by Capitol Records. It was produced by Terry Knight. "Time Machine", the band's first single release, just made it into the top 50 in the singles charts, reaching #48.

After the success of their second album Grand Funk (also known as The Red Album) in 1970, On Time went gold, one of four RIAA gold record awards for the band that year. The other two albums reaching gold status in 1970 for Grand Funk Railroad were Closer to Home and Live Album.

A half-century after the release of Karen Dalton's cult classic second album, In My Own Time sounds as magical as it always has; it was never-despite the album's title-that she was ahead of her time, but rather not of this world. Which is not to say she was some ethereal creature. After a whole life lived in her teenage years, married twice and with two kids, Dalton moved from Oklahoma to New York City to be part of the Greenwich Village 1960s folk scene alongside the likes of Tim Hardin and Neil Young. Bob Dylan called her one of his favorites, saying "Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday." She reportedly hated the comparison, though you get why Dylan made it: it's the weary ache and that slim silver thread of hope that remains. You can hear it on her cover of George Jones' "Take Me;" the piano flutters like it needs a fainting couch, but Dalton turns the quiet plea into something wistful rather than desperate. "Take me to Siberia and the coldest weather of the winter time/ And it would be just like spring in California," she sings, drawing out that last word like it's some impossible oasis. (By then, Dalton had had two teeth knocked out in a fight between boyfriends.) It's in her jaunty delivery of the Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It is" and her interpretation of Richard Manuel's psychedelic country-rock "In a Station," Dalton blowing like wind through some desolate space. And lord knows it's in her most famous song, the Scottish folk traditional "Katie Cruel." Helped along by high-lonesome banjo, it's as haunted as they come. "When I first came to town, they called me the roving jewel," Dalton sings, managing to make it sound like she's not broken by it all. "Now they've changed their tune, call me Katie Cruel." Credit her wavery, light-refracted voice and the way it reflects both a fragility of nature and a hardscrabble strength of circumstance. (While the story of folkie Fred Neil secretly recording Dalton's first album by not telling her the tape was running has been romanticized, it's also exploitative and manipulative.) Dalton, who would disappear after In My Own Time, battled heroin and alcohol addiction and died at age 55 after an AIDS diagnosis. But her influence carries on, in Angel Olsen, Lucinda Williams, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett and Nick Cave, to name a few. This new expanded and remastered edition includes alternate takes of "In My Own Dream," "Something on Your Mind" and "Katie Cruel." The latter two light a small fire under the beat, but find Dalton less declarative, like she's consoling a friend in hushed tones. There are also several live tracks. "Take Me," captured in April 1971 in Germany, is so intimate it's disarming, Dalton's voice cracking on the line "like heaven to me." But there is strength-an almost defiance-on the songs from her Montreaux performance a month later, even in "Blues on the Ceiling" when she predicts she'll "Never get out of these blues alive." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

For their first album in 18 years, Tears for Fears sound completely revitalized and as beautiful and engaging as ever. Remarkably, it's fueled in part by the 2017 death of Roland Orzabal's wife and partner of many years and his denial about losing her. "I think that when you've been close to someone for decades, they are living within you as well as without," he has said. "And consciously I did not believe she would die, though subconsciously I was, without doubt, preparing for the inevitable, arming myself against the future shock." The title track is shimmering and mysterious, with strident drums and alien beeps but also vocals like a soothing balm. "Winter done, they'll soon be gone/ From this unforgiving place/ To that vague and distant void/ Where the sunlight splits the eye," Orzabal sings of that threshold from life to death. It is heartbreaking, but also hopeful. "Please Be Happy" is incredibly candid-and one of their prettiest tracks: "These days it's like a wave is breaking over you/ Dragging you in with the undertow/ If you lay among the graves you will see other ghosts." And "No Small Thing," about facing the heartbreak of losing your love, is a stunner. Stripped-back acoustic guitar builds to the dreamy psychedelia Tears for Fears has always done so well, the whole thing swelling to a bursting-the-seams crescendo by the end. "Long, Long, Long Time" shows how the duo have always been masters of dynamics, its hymn-like organ giving way to a monster chorus; the song also reminds you just how much Sam Smith owes Curt Smith for their angelic style. "Master Plan" giddily dips into the band's longtime love of Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, and "Break the Man" is catchy jangle pop touched with moody strings. "My Demons," meanwhile, is a nasty piece of work, in the best way (one akin to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"), with Orzabal drilling the doomed lyrics: "Why is my name in lights when my name is spelled wrong . People always find you when your cell phone is on." Smith comes in to sweeten up the chorus, but he sounds thrillingly stretched to his limits as the rhythm gallops like a sweating horse. By condensing the sonic explorations of Meddle to actual songs and adding a lush, immaculate production to their trippiest instrumental sections, Pink Floyd inadvertently designed their commercial breakthrough with Dark Side of the Moon. The primary revelation of Dark Side of the Moon is what a little focus does for the band. Roger Waters wrote a series of songs about mundane, everyday details which aren't that impressive by themselves, but when given the sonic backdrop of Floyd's slow, atmospheric soundscapes and carefully placed sound effects, they achieve an emotional resonance. But what gives the album true power is the subtly textured music, which evolves from ponderous, neo-psychedelic art rock to jazz fusion and blues-rock before turning back to psychedelia. It's dense with detail, but leisurely paced, creating its own dark, haunting world. Pink Floyd may have better albums than Dark Side of the Moon, but no other record defines them quite as well as this one.

An unplugged retelling of many of the band's best-known songs, Simple Minds' Acoustic is an enjoyable if not particularly organic set. Employing the criteria used during the heyday of MTV Unplugged, the veteran Scots do indeed reimagine their catalog using acoustic instruments, though the amount of manipulation via effects and creative mixing makes for something a bit different. The resulting album is a sort of hybrid of stripped-down arrangements with just enough rock sweetening to reach the back seats. In the case of monster hits like "Alive and Kicking" and "Don't You (Forget About Me)," this approach feels a bit underwhelming and bland. While these renditions aren't necessarily bad, it does seem like Simple Minds missed out on an opportunity to dramatically shake up their repertoire in any number of possible directions, but instead settled for simply swapping out the electric guitars and synths with acoustic guitar and piano. The whole point of doing acoustic versions is usually to lay bare the material, deconstructing it down to its roots, but for the most part, Acoustic feels a bit too polished and adjusted.

In the four-year interim between Gov't Mule studio albums, guitar boss Warren Haynes has been busy: He played on the final Allman Brothers Band tour, paid tribute to Jerry Garcia with a symphony orchestra, issued an Americana-esque solo album, and played on James Cotton's Cotton Mouth Man. That said, no other music he makes resonates in the same way as what he creates with Gov't Mule (co-founder and drummer Mat Abts, keyboardist/guitarist Danny Louis, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson). Revolution Come...Revolution Go began on election night 2016. The band had their own ideas about the outcome, but as the night wore on, their worst fears came true and influenced the direction of the music here. The title doesn't pin the definition of "revolution" down to one topic, it's a verb, noun, adjective, and metaphor in Gov't Mule's dictionary; it describes everything from trends in music and social unrest to historical events and political and spiritual upheaval. The music here is heavy -- Mule heavy -- but also offers a host of other flavors and textures to expand the palette to dynamic effect. Opener "Stone Cold Rage" finds Haynes' mutating a James Gang vintage guitar vamp to suit Mule's purposes. Louis' swirling organ and Carlsson's distorted basslines are pushed forward by Abts' uncommonly funky breakbeats. The tune struts, swaggers, and pummels. "Drawn That Way" is a thundering blues-rocker that draws down on personal accountability. The musical change-ups here make this a standout. There's the slow, soulful "Pressure Under Fire" -- an exhortation to refute the mistakes of the past with collective tolerance and respect which contains an authority worthy of an Old Testament prophet. Likewise, the gospel-tinged R&B of "The Man I Want to Be," the Muscle Shoals-styled country of "Dreams & Songs," and the gritty, jazzy soul-funk of "Sarah, Surrender" offer different dimensions of the Southern-crusted rockist blues that is Gov't Mule's trademark. The latter tune contains Haynes' finest vocal performance on this or any other record he's been on, and he's assisted by the backing trio of Alecia Chakour, Jasmine Muhammad, and Bobby Allende. The abstract blues-jazz title track is bound to become a live staple for its suite-like structure. Guitarist Jimmie Vaughan lends a hand in adding earth to Haynes' fire on the psychedelic blues "Burning Point." The set closes with Carlsson's arrangement of Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night Cold Was the Ground." It commences as a moaning drone, with slide guitar, piano, woozy bass, and rumbling drums, but erupts in a mind-melting, screaming Hendrixian blues overloaded with wah-wah and slide guitars for an apocalyptic finish. Revolution Come... Revolution Go is easily Gov't Mule's most urgent record, but their call to arms isn't preachy; instead, righteous anger is refracted through the lens of empathy. It is also a fresh reboot of the band's sound, offering excellent songwriting and arrangements; it sounds more like a group effort than anything they've released. The message is that the revolution is within you: Hear it, believe it, become it.

The first half of 2022's two solo releases from Jack White (acoustic Entering Heaven Alive is out in July), Fear of the Dawn is a solid reminder the rock 'n' roll isn't dead: Call it White's Sabbath era. "Taking Me Back" is as heavy, and as '70s, as anything he's done, layered with fuzzed-out guitar, underwater drums, and in-and-out effects that make the whole thing sound so big it's shorting out the system. The title track absolutely swings, its bass like an 18-wheeler plowing down a highway at midnight-steady while the guitar squalls, out of control and all over the place, refusing to between the lines. White works himself up into a tent-revival preacher froth-on the cusp of evangelism and madness-on "What's the Trick": "Stomping on a box that I thought was empty/ But there was something sharp inside," he rants as a guitar maniacally runs scales through a monster filter. And that's hardly the weirdest moment. White, a guy who has never seemed casual or like he takes his purpose lightly, is in a playful, experimental mood. "Into the Twilight" starts with a bit of Manhattan Transfer-style vocals, then leaps fearlessly into '70s funk and disco camp, throwing in a William S. Burroughs sample ("When you cut into the present, the future leaks out") and down-and-dirty keys. "Hi-De-Ho" kicks in with mystical vocalization before A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip rolls up with some '80s style rap-nodding to the obvious reference ("Hi-de-hi-de-ho is a Calloway vibe") and unleashing some fun top-of-their-game nonsense: "Hurting real bad, like Stevie Wonder with contusions/ It's a guitar chuck coming from Chuck Berry/ Hi-de-high tones from Minnie Rip, Mariah Carey/ Olajuwon post moves, Bron or Embiid/ Everybody got it in 'em, find yours and succeed." "That Was Then, This Is Now" incorporates '70s bubblegum glam metal a la The Sweet, "Eosophobia" rides a jackhammer rhythm that slides sideways into The Edge-style atmospherics and laser-show effects, and "The White Raven" features both a pounding, industrial grind and haunted-house howls. Alex Lifeson is no stranger to the concept of evolution. As a founding member of Rush, he's been able to explore more musical ground than just about any other guitar player out there - taking rock to new progressive heights throughout the decades and always in the most wildly inventive of ways. His influence can be heard on countless bands around the world, from indie shoegaze and math rock to heavy metal and beyond. Over the last few years Lifeson has been focusing on a new project that, no matter how well-acquainted you are with his discography, will undoubtedly shatter all seeds of expectation and blow the mind. That project is Envy Of None.

The new band, also featuring Coney Hatch founder/bassist Andy Curran, accomplished producer and engineer Alfio Annibalini and singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne, will be releasing their self-titled debut album on April 8 via Kscope. Its 11 tracks - which ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock - throw surprises at every turn, twisting dark melodies against contemporary pop hooks. Lifeson himself is proudly aware of how little of it crosses over with the band that made him famous.

However, it was only when singer Maiah Wynne became involved that this truly started to feel like a band destined to go somewhere. Her haunting melodies and soul-baring intensity is - by the admission of her own bandmates - what truly brought this music to life. All things considered; she is a star in the making. "I sent over an early version of the song Shadow," explains Andy Curran. "When I played what she'd done back to the others they were like, 'Who is this crazy talented person?!'"

When the Black Swan was hatched in 2020, the debut of this super-group for the new decade made some real waves. Schenker vocalist Robin McAuley was carried capably by Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson, along with fellow Dokken alum Reb Beach, also infamous for Winger, Whitesnake, Night Ranger and almost countless other credits. Massive drumming was handled by Frehley and Mr. Big powerhouse drummer Matt Starr, and still is. The debut album did a number of new things, in some familiar flavors, to the end that it scored very well with the Sonic Perspectives team. The same band remains intact, and has delivered a new album for 2022.

"Generation Mind" promises to be a more focused and polished offering than the band's original debut, but let's find out how it measures up. This one-hour collection of twelve tracks is meant to be one of the biggest arrivals for 2022 from Frontiers Records, as it should be with this talented lineup.

The album scores some bonus points for creativity with a one-minute instrumental introduction, which may be called "Before The Light," but seems to reach back a little bit to the Zeppelin catalog and "In The Light," albeit a darker more ominous interpretation of the same feelings. Of course, when Reb starts weaving in some leads halfway in, his signature tremolo work almost gets some Jason Becker vibes happening, which is cool. When the second track, the first "real" track starts, entitled "She Hides Behind," it has Reb's fingerprints all over it. As with the previous Black Swan release, as well as other Reb projects like "The Mob" (with Dug Pinnick), Reb tends to employ riffs and song structures which are great rockers in their own right, but perhaps not adequately the right proggy flavor for the underrated composer known as C.F. Kip Winger. For pushing seventy years of age, Robin McAuley certainly has zero reservations about pushing his vocal cords to the limits, and his voice remains solid and more than up to the task. Reb's solo in the piece is his usual solid work, filled with his signature blend of high-speed legato runs complemented by the occasional right hand tapping and trem flutters and pull-ups.

13 is the 19th studio album by British rock band Black Sabbath. The album was released on 10 June 2013 in Europe and 11 June 2013 in North America, via Vertigo Records and Republic Records in the US, and via Vertigo Records worldwide. It is the first studio album released by Black Sabbath since Forbidden (1995), and their first studio recording with original singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler since the live album Reunion (1998), which contained two new studio tracks. It is also the first studio album with Osbourne since Never Say Die! (1978), and with Butler since Cross Purposes (1994). This is also the first Black Sabbath studio album since Never Say Die! not to feature longtime keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, and the first since The Eternal Idol (1987) on Vertigo (outside the US and Canada).
Black Sabbath's original line-up first began work on a new studio album in 2001 with producer Rick Rubin. The album's development was delayed because Osbourne was in the middle of finishing his eighth solo album Down to Earth, and the rest of the band members eventually went on to pursue other projects, including GZR and Heaven & Hell. When Black Sabbath announced the end of their hiatus on 11 November 2011, the band announced that they would restart work on a new album with Rubin. In addition to original members Osbourne, Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi, they were joined at the recording sessions by drummer Brad Wilk, of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to not participate in the reunion, due to a "contractual dispute".

Archival Recording: 1971: The Road Starts Hear Rehearsal Tape. Just in time for the band's 50th birthday, Aerosmith have a special treasure in store for their fans.

The seven songs featured on the record were written just a year after Aerosmith formed and two years before the release of their 1973 self-titled debut album.

"The groundbreaking early recording was recorded in 1971 by Mark Lehman on Joe Perry's Wollensak tape machine, (...) either in the band's Boston rehearsal room in front of a select few friends, or at a rehearsal the band was holding during a sound check for an early show" , according to a press release.

None of the songs is really unknown: songs like "Somebody", "Movin' Out", "Walkin' the Dog", "Mama Kin" and "Dream On" were re-recorded for Aerosmith's debut album, the other two tracks were recorded appeared on later releases ("Reefer Head Woman" ended up re-recorded on "Night in the Ruts" in 1979, "Major Barbara" was included on "Classics Live" (1986).

Pattern-Seeking Animals is the brand new quartet featuring the talents of current & former Spock's Beard members Ted Leonard, Jimmy Keegan & Dave Meros as well as long-time contributing songwriter-producer John Boegehold. Of the musical direction, Boegehold comments: "My goal was to produce music that's progressive and intricate while keeping things immediate and melodic. Whether a song is four minutes or ten minutes long, I didn't want more than a few bars go by without some kind of instrumental or vocal hook." With the band obviously being closely associated with Spock's Beard, John was conscious of exploring different avenues with Pattern-Seeking Animals, whether it was song structures, vocal arrangements, synth sounds or emotional textures. "Pattern-Seeking Animals was a clean slate so I found myself drawing on a few different musical influences and using some contemporary production ideas and sounds that I probably wouldn't use with SB for various reasons." Originally, planned as a recording project, P-S A will also perform live! Boeghold states: "The plan is to tour as much as possible and to come out with a new album at least once a year. In fact, work on the second album is already well under way."

Melodic rockers DeVicious are back with their fourth album, 'Black Heart', a concept album (of sorts) that serves the dual role of being not just a rock album, but also a soundtrack to the upcoming comic book series 'Dollhouse DV' created by the band. Three of the songs are written for the soundtrack and included here.

Bassist/Composer/Main Songwriter/Producer and all-around band leader Alex Frey has crafted an incredible follow-up that will please all who have followed the band thus far and is sure to recruit new followers. Production-wise, the songs are driven equally by both the guitars of Radivoj Petrovic and keyboardist Denis Kunz. Both of them are all over this album, drenching the songs with melodic melodies. Something else that makes the album stand out are the terrific background vocals, which includes the exceptional Michael Bormann and new(ish) TNT lead singer Baol Bardot Bulsara. Those two along with singer Antonio Calanna ensures that every chorus soars on this album.
