MACKS CREEK BAND out of Missouri are a working band still ripping it up decades after this rare private press LP was unleashed. This is primarily a live band, the scorching dual guitar action and propulsive rhythms captured here leave zero doubt they can jam your mind right out of your body at a show. Laid down at Parallax Recording Studios in Willow Springs, Missouri in 1980, the LP contains all original material loaded with riverboats, reefer, catfish, nasty ladies dressed to kill, characters like Diamond Jim and Bertha Bryan. southern rock potent enough to up the ante for the Allmans and other southern rockers they shared the stage with back in the day. They primarily worked the St. Louis / Southern Illinois area and are a reminder that some regional bands who made their bread and butter killing it live with cover versions of classic southern rock made the smart move to do all original material when it came time to make their own record. Don't confuse them with the lighter country rock band out of Chicago who use the exact same name, or of course, that other Max Creek out of Connecticut who worked the Grateful Dead angle. this is a deep fried dose of Americana with wide open dual guitar spaces where smokin' beer soaked roadhouses or lazy day fishin' holes both can set you free!

In the summer of 1984 singer Steve Overland and his brother, guitarist Chris (both formerly of Wildlife) teamed up with drummer Pete Jupp (ex Wildlife and Samson) and bassist Merv Goldsworthy (ex Diamond Head and Samson) to form FM. Joined by the keyboard talents of Didge Digital, by December that year they had secured a recording contract with CBS/Portrait and the band headed to Germany for a run of dates with Meat Loaf.

Further tours with Tina Turner, Foreigner and Gary Moore built up the momentum. On 8 September 1986 FM released their debut album INDISCREET (featuring the hugely popular single "Frozen Heart") to great critical acclaim and the year ended on a high with FM supporting the white-hot Bon Jovi on their "Slippery When Wet" tour.

2024 sees FM celebrate their 40th Anniversary with the release of the band's fourteenth studio album OLD HABITS DIE HARD accompanied as ever by an extensive touring schedule.

The Aeroplanes keep the arty groove going on their follow-up to Swagger, with little specifically changing about them or their general approach. There is one notable difference, namely the departure of John Langley on drums. Replacement Paul Mulreany does a fine enough job, at points offering up some fairly tight (as opposed to stiff) percussion; the band otherwise chugs along as before. Langley's lyrical sense and delivery still does the business, his elaborate wordplay and rich metaphors avoiding preciousness on the one hand and doggerel on the other. Recording the album mostly in L.A. didn't seem to affect them any either; while producer Larry Hirsch doesn't do much different from what Gil Norton did on Swagger, he keeps everything sounding just fine. A running U.K. music press joke at the time had the group appearing à la superheroes in sticky situations and putting on "spontaneous rock & roll concerts" to save the day. It may seem odd, but the sound of the Aeroplanes on Beatsongs, just loose enough on the one hand and excellently performed on the other, actually fits that description rather well. Songs like "My Hurricane," which manages to sound both quite intense and nicely relaxed at the same time, or the surprising but quite successful cover of Paul Simon's "The Boy in the Bubble" add to the overall quality. "Huh" kicks everything off with understated fire, and with Langley in fine vocal form as always. Many other fine high points are the slow, measured, lovely chiming and pace of "Cardboard Box," and "Jack Leaves/Back Spring" and its lovely, rustic atmosphere. Rodney Allen once again takes a lead vocal turn at points, on his own upbeat music-resigned lyric confection "Fun" and the enjoyable, sprightly semi-R&B of "Streamers," both times doing the business with style. ~ Ned Raggett

A year and 5 albums after he has brought the Manna/Mirage project to a close, ex-Muffins musician / composer Dave Newhouse has produced a new album under the moniker of.'Dave Newhouse', this one titled "Natura Morta", Latin for Still Life. Many of the same musical suspects (guest musicians) from around the world are involved, this one is a bit longer than the aforementioned Manna/Mirage albums clocking in at around 43 minutes. It still has that signature AmeriCanterbury / Muffins compositional ethic as well as fast and furious examples of fusion / jazz rock, RIO, World Music, Americana, and alt-jazz. Even John Greaves (Henry Cow / Kew Rhône / National Health) makes a lovely appearance here. as does Guy Segers (Univers Zero / Eclectic Maybe Band).
