RILEY'S L.A. GUNS release its sophomore album, "The Dark Horse", on January 22 via Golden Robot Records. The effort will arrive more than two months after the death of the band's drummer and leader, Steve Riley, who would have celebrated his 68th birthday on the day of "The Dark Horse"'s release.

In addition to Riley, RILEY'S L.A. GUNS' most recent lineup featured Orlando, Florida-based guitarist/vocalist Kurt Frohlich, bassist Kelly Nickels (a member of L.A. GUNS' "classic" incarnation) and guitarist Scott Griffin, who played bass for L.A. GUNS from 2007 until 2009, and then again from 2011 to 2014.

'Last year I got to talk to John Haywood of Appalachiatari here at Orbit's for the Whizzbang podcast, and it's been one of the best conversations I've ever had. We talked a lot about the intersection of Appalachia and heavy metal, how growing up as a metalhead around these parts often put you at odds with the church folks. How it's weird to be an outsider within what's already an outsider culture.

Appalachiatari tackles that concept head-on with Blood On The Altar. A fire and brimstone blend of scuzzy, fuzzy, southern-fried grooves and riffs galore, paired up with some righteous fiddle, harmonica, organ and accordion. It's got a good high stank, like granny cooking up a pot of ramps, it'll make your damn eyes water. '

The career-spanning project - issued across five CDs or, in condensed form, three LPs - collects material recorded by the U.K. radio giant between 1970 and 1998. Most of it's new to fans, and almost all of it is essential listening for die-hards.

Even though there are some major gaps in the chronology (only one track between the crucial prog years of 1972 and 1978, nothing between the slicker stretch of 1980 to 1987), BBC Broadcasts still presents a solid overview of the Genesis evolution. It opens with a trio of previously released non-album tracks (the dainty, folky "Shepherd," "Pacidy" and "Let Us Now Make Love") recorded in 1970 for the Night Ride program. It ends during a live show from the widely ignored Calling All Stations era, with two dramatic tracks ("Not About Us," "Dividing Line") fronted by the briefly tenured Ray Wilson in 1998.

UK prog rockers Gentle Giant's fourth album, Octopus has been remixed (in part) by Steven Wilson for an expanded CD+Blu-ray audio reissue. The new edition of the 1972 album sees Wilson remix five of the eight tracks for stereo and 5.1 surround sound (this is due to missing multi-tracks). The remaining three tracks (Advent of Panurge, Raconteur Troubadour and The Boys in the Band) are the original stereo remixes on the CD and on the blu-ray have been processed through Penteo upmix software for 5.1 surround sound. Steven did this for Broken on Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair, if you remember. Both discs also include a bonus track of a 16 minute live version of Extracts from Octopus, again newly mixed into stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

As well as the album tracks in 96/24 Stereo LPCM & DTS 5.1 Master Audio, the blu-ray element of this set contains a flat transfer of the original 1972 mix, and instrumental versions of the five stereo remixes, all in high resolution.
