After toiling in obscurity for nearly a decade, the Bristol, England, band Idles broke through in 2017-earning accolades for their big, heavy, ferocious sound (singer Joe Talbot has vehemently, repeatedly rejected the easy "punk" label) and lyrics railing against toxic masculinity, white privilege and over-reaching government. In 2020, with their third album, IDLES is not saying anything many people aren't already feeling, but there's something undeniably cathartic about saying it with such fury: Sometimes it's just enough to yell out "This means war! Anti-war!" while klaxon guitars wail on the song "War," or "Consent! Consent! Consent! Consent!" on "Ne Touche Pas Moi" ("don't touch me"). Tapping into the Western world's emotional disorder of the moment, "Anxiety" spits: "Our government hates the poor/ Cold leaders' cold class war/ Given drugs you can't afford/ So the poor can't buy the cure." That reliable old chestnut of a punching bag, the British royal family, makes plenty of appearances, including on the sonar-warp "Reigns." "I'm guessing it is hard for you to see, that that that that empathy will kick down your throne," Talbot heckles the Windsors on "Kill Them With Kindness," which opens with a pretty jewel-box tune before sliding sideways into appealingly funky, Jesus Lizard-esque guitar and a strutting beat. And here's the thing: While Talbot gets all the front-man attention, it's the musicians who really shock and awe. Guitarists Lee Kiernan and Mark Bowen create a dialogue of needling Wire-esque riffs on the irresistible "Model Village" ("Model low crime rate in the village/ Model race, model hate, model village," Talbot rails against mindless patriotism). Drummer Jon Beavis and bassist Adam Devonshire tattoo relentless, and relentlessly catchy, rhythm on tracks like "Anxiety" and "Grounds" ("Not a single thing has ever been mended/ by you standing there and saying you're offended," Talbot jeers on that one, taking a swipe at the trend of virtue-signaling). "Mr. Motivator" rides a wave of racing guitar and gun-shot drums to underscore Talbot's battle cry: "Let's seize the day/ all hold hands/ chase the pricks away." Absurdly coupling toxic masculinity and feminist power, Talbot chants,"Like Conor McGregor with a samurai sword on rollerblades/ Like Vasyl Lomachenko after four pints of Gatorade/ Like Kathleen Hanna with bear claws grabbing Trump by the pussy . Like Frida Kahlo painting 'arm the poor' on your fuck-off wall." Then he follows it all up with a wink: "How do you like them clichs?" And when things take a wild left turn with "A Hymn"-haunted by spooky, hazy guitars and droning lyrics-it's like everything goes out of focus for a minute. Although they are still the U.K.'s most vital punk band, Idles are on fire, not just in terms of their productivity -- four albums in four years -- or their renewed vigor, but also off the back of their first lukewarm record, Ultra Mono. However, it's terribly on-brand for Idles to not go gentle, and Crawler is nothing if not rage against the dying of the light. After sensing that their sound was becoming stale, Idles' fourth album sees the band exploring several new avenues at once. The need to evolve is true of any artist, but many don't take the leap for fear of the risks. Crawler, then, defaults to their most daring album to date, as it incorporates elements of electronic music, noise rock, soul, and 2000s indie. It's also their densest record, with generally more obscured themes and more nuance than ever before -- clearly made in response to the broadness of previous material. Despite some missteps, Ultra Mono only furthered their assent and stature, allowing the band to feel untethered from genre conventions and free to explore. They drive this home immediately, with the opening track "MTT 420 RR" bucking the trend of explosive openers in favor of subtle swirling electronics, which build upon themselves in interesting ways. Of course, they're attempting to straddle both old and new, so it leads into "The Wheel," which is more in line with their explosive reputation, even if the instrumentation is meatier. Yet another side of the album reveals itself in "When the Lights Come On," which features a spectral guitar line reminiscent of Kings of Leon's "Knocked Up." With half their hand on the table they settle into familiar and often uninspiring territory, that is until lead track "Beachland Ballroom." Although not their first foray into soulful territory -- after covering Solomon Burke's "Cry to Me" -- the track is a clear highlight, demonstrating how compatible this approach is; Talbot's personal struggle to keep moving forward makes for a bittersweet listen, deftly proving his melodic range and underlining how good Idles can be when they show relative restraint. The back half of the record is very scattershot, but consistently surprising, featuring an ambient interlude ("Kelechi"), a beautifully ethereal soundscape that erupts into synth and bass stabs ("Progress"), and a burst of hardcore punk ("Wizz"). The anthemic closer "The End" reaffirms that this is still Idles, acting as a not-so-gentle reminder that when the big guns are necessary, they can still raise the roof. It's great to see so many new ideas from a band who flirted with stagnation, a point only exemplified by the weakest songs being the ones that stick closest to their old formula. It makes Crawler more than just a course correction; it has the potential to open the door to the Idles multiverse, where multiple versions of the band co-exist. Whilst it doesn't always stick the landing, the new spaces it does explore are well worth the journey.

Make no mistake, Willy & the Poor Boys is a fun record, perhaps the breeziest album CCR ever made. Apart from the eerie minor-key closer "Effigy" (one of John Fogerty's most haunting numbers), there is little of the doom that colored Green River. Fogerty's rage remains, blazing to the forefront on "Fortunate Son," a working-class protest song that cuts harder than any of the explicit Vietnam protest songs of the era, which is one of the reasons that it hasn't aged where its peers have. Also, there's that unbridled vocal from Fogerty and the ferocious playing on CCR, which both sound fresh as they did upon release. "Fortunate Son" is one of the greatest, hardest rock & rollers ever cut, so it might seem to be out of step with an album that is pretty laid-back and friendly, but there's that elemental joy that by late '69 was one of CCR's main trademarks. Make no mistake, Willy & the Poor Boys is a fun record, perhaps the breeziest album CCR ever made. Apart from the eerie minor-key closer "Effigy" (one of John Fogerty's most haunting numbers), there is little of the doom that colored Green River. Fogerty's rage remains, blazing to the forefront on "Fortunate Son," a working-class protest song that cuts harder than any of the explicit Vietnam protest songs of the era, which is one of the reasons that it hasn't aged where its peers have. Also, there's that unbridled vocal from Fogerty and the ferocious playing on CCR, which both sound fresh as they did upon release. "Fortunate Son" is one of the greatest, hardest rock & rollers ever cut, so it might seem to be out of step with an album that is pretty laid-back and friendly, but there's that elemental joy that by late '69 was one of CCR's main trademarks. Opening slowly with the dark, swampy "Born on the Bayou," Bayou Country reveals an assured Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band that has found its voice between their first and second album. It's not just that "Born on the Bayou" announces that CCR has discovered its sound -- it reveals the extent of John Fogerty's myth-making. With this song, he sketches out his persona; it makes him sound as if he crawled out of the backwoods of Louisiana instead of being a native San Franciscan. He carries this illusion throughout the record, through the ominous meanderings of "Graveyard Train" through the stoked cover of "Good Golly Miss Molly" to "Keep on Chooglin'," which rides out a southern-fried groove for nearly eight minutes. At the heart of Bayou Country, as well as Fogerty's myth and Creedence's entire career, is "Proud Mary." A riverboat tale where the narrator leaves a good job in the city for a life rolling down the river, the song is filled with details that ring so true that it feels autobiographical. The lyric is married to music that is utterly unique yet curiously timeless, blending rockabilly, country, and Stax R&B into something utterly distinctive and addictive. "Proud Mary" is the emotional fulcrum at the center of Fogerty's seductive imaginary Americana, and while it's the best song here, his other songs are no slouch, either. The roots of France's ANIMALIZE go back to 2014, when the moniker was first chosen, but their lineup didn't solidify until 2018. From the beginning, the power-trio's influences were set: heavy metal from the '70s and '80s, but specifically the likes of Loudness, W.A.S.P., Tokyo Blade, Glenn Tipton, Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Hughes, and Annihilator and especially classic French heavy metal like ADX, Malediction, Sortilge and Warning. Synthwave and New Wave, both old and new, also musically influence ANIMALIZE.
However, it is the band's love of movies which arguably influences ANIMALIZE's outlook the most. For them, a visual identity and atmosphere - whether in their visual aesthetic, be it artwork or onstage, or especially their upcoming videos - is of the utmost importance. The roots of France's ANIMALIZE go back to 2014, when the moniker was first chosen, but their lineup didn't solidify until 2018. From the beginning, the power-trio's influences were set: heavy metal from the '70s and '80s, but specifically the likes of Loudness, W.A.S.P., Tokyo Blade, Glenn Tipton, Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Hughes, and Annihilator and especially classic French heavy metal like ADX, Malediction, Sortilge and Warning. Synthwave and New Wave, both old and new, also musically influence ANIMALIZE.
However, it is the band's love of movies which arguably influences ANIMALIZE's outlook the most. For them, a visual identity and atmosphere - whether in their visual aesthetic, be it artwork or onstage, or especially their upcoming videos - is of the utmost importance. ]German Symphonic Metal shooting stars Beyond the Black look back on a stratospheric success story. Already their 2015 debut album hit like a bomb in their home country. "Songs Of Love And Death" besieged the German Top 15 for weeks and led up to the band being awarded the Metal Hammer Award 2015 for "Best Debut".
Its successor "Lost In Forever" (2016) entered the German charts on #4 right away and paved ways for a huge tour from Germany over countries like UK, Russia or Japan. Since the band's live debut in 2014 they have played the world's biggest Metal festival Wacken Open Air several times and toured as a support act for heavyweights such as Aerosmith, Korn, Scorpions, Saxon or Within Temptation.
In the course of album release number three ("Heart Of the Hurricane") Beyond the Black absolved their first own European headline tour in fall 2019 consisting of over 20 shows in 10 countries - most of them sold out. But even before finishing their touring cycle Beyond the Black got back to the studio to write record number four.

The Zakk Wylde-led, heavy riffage machine's tenth full-length, and the follow-up to 2014's well-received Catacombs of the Black Vatican, Grimmest Hits is not the cherry-picked best-of that its winking title would suggest. Instead, Wylde and company have crafted another chugging set of Sabbath and Zeppelin-inspired originals that are executed with extreme prejudice. Opener "Trampled Down Below" sneaks in on a wave of bass-anchored sonic mysticism before dropping its payload via a full-court press that sees all four members locking in for a seismic doom blues jamboree with a little post-grunge posturing tossed in for good measure -- vocally, Wylde is often a dead ringer for late Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley. It's a formula that's applied liberally throughout, but as far as straight-up, in-your-face guitar rock goes, it's hard to argue with the quality of the results, especially on neck-snapping standouts like "Seasons of Falter" and "Room of Nightmares." The classic rock underpinnings that are so prevalent in the heavier tracks also find their way into less decibel-crushing numbers like "The Day That Heaven Had Gone Away," "The Only Words," and "Nothing Left to Say," the latter two of which echo the soulful Southern rock of the Marshall Tucker and Allman Brothers bands.
