Recorded before a live audience in London in 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was originally conceived as a BBC-TV special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, it centers on the original line up of The Rolling Stones -- Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon) -- who serve as both the show's hosts and featured attraction. For the first time in front of an audience, "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" performs six Stones classics. The program also includes extraordinary performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono, and The Dirty Mac. A 'supergroup' before the term had even been coined, the band was comprised of Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums) and John Lennon on guitar and vocals.

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus soundtrack has been expanded to 28 tracks, received a new mix and 192k 24 bit HD restoration. Bonus material included by the late
concert pianist Julius Katchen, three additional songs by Taj Mahal and never before heard recordings of The Dirty Mac performing The Beatles classic, "Revolution" and the aptly titled track "Warmup Jam."

Staccato-driven guitar parts, thumping/popping bass underpinnings, in the pocket drum tempos and fierce, barking/gang-oriented choruses are staples of the Despyre sound. The type of material designated for jumping, slamming energy for the musicians that will transfer to the audience and back again - it's hard not to imagine sweating bodies grunting and pits forming to "DRU" or "Hell Freezes Over", intertwining a bit of the street cred that put Biohazard on the map along with a healthy dose of Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed. Street sounds, sirens, and car crashes signal the opening of "Liberate", a mid-tempo anthem featuring a crunchy musical foundation as well as potent, penetrating verses, the delivery switching between fierce Anselmo-esque roars and comforting clean melodies a la Chuck Billy. For dynamic diversion you get some classical-laden piano parts during "Twisted", while the closer "Blue Sky (Reborn)" is an acoustic-led affair featuring guest female vocals in a poignant, somber duet format.

„Amused to Death is a solid album both conceptually and musically, showcasing Waters as an artist who, like his work with Pink Floyd, conveys his thoughts and ideals with pinpoint accuracy so that they are engraved within his audience's mind. Assembled from various shows from various tours from around the world, 2016's Live: Greatest Hits from Around the World is billed as ZZ Top's first "full-length live album" -- a matter of dispute considering how Eagle Rock released three CD/DVD/Blu-ray combo sets between 2008 and 2014. There is no visual component to Live: Greatest Hits from Around the World, which may be how it skates around the first live album distinction -- if there's no video, this is a pure album -- but the record mines a similar musical vein, collecting highlights from latter-day ZZ Top tours. During the 2000s and 2010s, ZZ Top released an excellent studio album called La Futura, but that's ignored here in favor for all the songs that are classic rock staples. Older, the Lil' Ol' Band from Texas sounds thicker and heavier -- and Billy Gibbons' growl is so gruff it seems tattered -- but that helps distinguish these versions from the spit and polish of the studio versions; not better, per se, but certainly the work of a band whose members happily settle into their advanced years, not wishing to change a thing about how they do things. Nevertheless, the undeniable highlights are the two tracks featuring cameos from Jeff Beck: he contributes lyrical solos to "Rough Boy" and helps with the heavy-footed boogie of "Sixteen Tons," pushing the trio just far enough out of its comfort zone to provide some crackle. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of FIELD DAY, the beautiful instrumental double album originally released in 2005 by GENESIS founding member ANTHONY PHILLIPS.

Work on the composition of FIELD DAY began in September 2001. Anthony would later reflect "I'd become a stranger to the world of guitars and all my lovely stringed instruments would often look at me with mournful reproach! There was a gap in my keyboard-based TV work and so I launched myself on the neglected fretted fraternity, improvising for 2 - 3 hours on each in a state of great excitement but chronic rustiness". Following two aborted attempts at recording the sixty-one pieces of music, recording finally began in earnest in 2004. The recordings saw Anthony utilise 6-string guitar, 10- string guitar, 12-string guitar, cittern, bouzouki, charrango and mandolin to great effect.

Issued the following year, FIELD DAY received a warm response from Anthony Phillips aficionados upon its release. With this new edition, Anthony has revisited the recordings, re-mastering the original stereo mixes and has created a 5.1 Surround sound mix with engineer James Collins. The results bring a new life to the compositions and a much loved album.

Yet for all the time he spent in the spotlight over his four-decade-long career, Prince also worked tirelessly behind the scenes to nurture talent and pen songs for the rising artists he respected. On June 21st, Warner Bros. Records released this extraordinary body of work, sourced directly from Prince's vast archive recordings.
Nearly all of the entries date from Prince's golden age - the '80s - and where some are very different from their released versions, others are hardly different at all. Many of these songs are technically demos - sketches or references for others to use while recording more fully realized versions - but with Prince, that was a relative term: He frequently recorded completely solo, handling most if not all of the vocals and instruments, so his "demos" usually evolved into completed tracks. Progressive Rock is a magical world of sounds. Yet, it is very challenging and people love it for its richness, complexity, dramatic epic sounds and top musicianship. I got into it for its melodies. Early Genesis, King Crimson, Camel, Yes, Pink Floyd created worlds of unique and special music. When Tommaso Monopoli, the amazing drummer, raised the idea for me to write a prog rock album, It was sounding impossible at first , but I took the challenge. While not a pure prog album, the result is kinda the feel of Prog blended with Classic Rock. In order to create this sound I was very luck to work with such amazing musicians as Tommaso with a unique drum style, Amadeo Zunino on Bass and many more super talents. On their third campaign to open the public's eyes to the ills of modern society, Los Angeles industrial anarchists 3Teeth expand the scope of their assault with the powerful Metawar, a hulking monster that makes shutdown.exe sound tame in comparison. Uncovering all the sins that America has to offer, the band pulls no punches, delivering their typically subversive and unflinching messages with beefed-up sound quality courtesy of producer Sean Beavan. As on previous releases, two of Beavan's former collaborators (Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson) heavily inform 3Teeth's sound, just as much as influences Rob Zombie and Rammstein. These songs are unrelenting, cathartic releases, with frontman Alexis Mincolla's nightmarish lyrics (as apocalyptic and dystopian as ever) bludgeoned home by a band (Chase Brawner, Xavier Swafford, Andrew Means, and Justin Hanson) in peak form. Like a Terminator-meets-The-Matrix film directed by Rob Zombie, this is techno-horror pushed through a meat grinder. Highlights abound as 3Teeth veer from towering epics ("Altaer," "Sell Your Face 2.0") to melodic earworms that creep deep into the brain ("The Fall," "Surrender"). The corrosive "Affluenza" rides a NIN-versus-Prodigy synth attack that chronicles the spread of corporate disease across the globe, which complements "EXXXIT," an ode to American imperialism and consumer culture. "President X" tackles the uncomfortable truth that they're all bad (just packaged differently), as downtuned nu-metal guitars churn and drums pop. They even take indie-synth band Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" and inject it with the appropriate dread to match the song's original, troubling lyrics. Social media, facial recognition technology, privacy, identity politics: it's all here and nothing is safe from Mincolla's critical eye. While this might sound like more of the same, there's just enough variation to the observations to make Metawar feel fresh and full of newfound anxiety. The nightmarish threat is all-too-real and 3Teeth knows it. By peeling away the layers, they reveal that doom is not waiting far in the future but is already at our gates. The live-in-studio Choba B CCCP (Russian for "Back In The USSR") was released in the Soviet Union in 1988, making Paul the first Western artist to issue an album exclusively for that market. In a conscious decision to get back to his roots, Paul spontaneously spent two days covering his favorite hits from the 1950s. The sessions produced 22 songs in total (and one of the outtakes being a version of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There"). Choba B CCCP was a deeply personal album and a way to acknowledge fans who had supported him and The Beatles since the start. "When I was very young I asked my dad if people wanted peace," Paul explained at the time. "He said to me, 'Yes, people everywhere want peace - it's usually politicians that cause trouble.' It always seemed to me that the way The Beatles' music was admired in the USSR tended to prove his point, that people the world over have a great deal in common. In releasing this record exclusively in the Soviet Union, I extend the hand of peace and friendship to the people of Russia." Choba B CCCP was released in the rest of the world following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

"We called ourselves THE SQUARES, or sometimes just SQUARES. There were other bands with the same name but we were determined to get to home base first and claim the name. That never happened. We were part VAN HALEN and part EVERLY BROTHERS. A mix of heavy metal, rock 'n' roll, punk and new wave. We were hard to pin down and categorize, which is most likely why we never 'made it.'
"But as we were trying our best to get a record deal and become superstars, we had a lot of good times, and we laid down some seriously good music. We were ahead of our time, which, in this case, is another way of saying we were out of step with what people were looking for back then.

In 1978, Joy Division made their first TV appearance in the former Manchester Granada studios on Tony Wilson's show, So It Goes. In the summer of 2017, New Order (aka Joy Division Mark II) returned to the scene of the crime for 5 concerts, with ?(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So It Goes. being their 13th July performance. Despite not being particularly renowned for their on-stage performances, they still continue to regularly release live albums. After BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert in 1992, Live at the London Troxy in 2011, Live at Bestival 2012 in 2013 and NOMC15 in 2017, Bernard Sumner's band conceived this show with artist Liam Gillick, who is normally better suited to the Tate Modern than to concert halls. Some tracks have even been reworked with the help of composer Joe Duddell and a 12-strong synthesizer ensemble.

But one thing that fans will be particularly pleased by is the set list. Songs now seldom performed by the Mancunian group (such as Times Change from Republic, Vanishing Point from Technique, Ultraviolence from Power, Corruption and Lies and Plastic from Music Complete) as well as four Joy Division tracks (In a Lonely Place, Decades, Heart & Soul and Disorder, songs which haven't been played live in 30 years!) make for a very special record. Without resting on their laurels, the quintet consisting of the original line-up (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert) along with later additions (Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman) perform completely reworked versions of their hits from the last century, proving that they most certainly still have things left to say. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Metallica were easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s and '90s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rock star games of metal musicians during the mid-'80s pop-metal renaissance. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal's underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. With each album, the band's playing and writing improved; James Hetfield developed a signature rhythm playing that matched his growl, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett became one of the most copied guitarists in metal. To complete the package, Lars Ulrich's thunderous (yet complex) drumming clicked in perfectly with Cliff Burton's innovative bass playing.
After releasing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed while traveling in Sweden. Burton died in the accident. When the band decided to continue, Jason Newsted was chosen to replace Burton; two years later, the band released the conceptually ambitious ...And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten without any radio play and very little support from MTV. But Metallica completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991's Metallica, a self-titled effort that found the band trading in its long compositions for more concise song structures. Peppered with hits like "Wherever I May Roam" and "Enter Sandman," it resulted in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone. To support the record, Metallica launched a long tour that kept the musicians on the road for nearly two years.
By the '90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics. No other heavy metal band has ever been able to pull off such a feat. However, the group lost a portion of its core audience with its long-awaited follow-up to Metallica, 1996's Load. The album moved the band toward alternative rock in terms of image -- the bandmembers cut their hair and had their picture taken by Anton Corbijn. Although the album was a hit upon its summer release, entering the charts at number one and selling three million copies within two months, certain members of the Metallica fan base complained about the shift in image, as well as the group's decision to headline the sixth Lollapalooza. Re-Load, which combined new material with songs left off the original Load record, appeared in 1997; despite poor reviews, it sold at a typically brisk pace and spun off several successful singles, including "Fuel" and "The Memory Remains." Garage Inc., a double-disc collection of B-sides, rarities, and newly recorded covers, followed in 1998. Metallica's take on Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" helped maintain their presence in the charts, and the band continued its flood of product with 1999's S&M, which documented a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony. It debuted at number two, reconfirming the group's immense popularity.
In January 2001, bassist Jason Newsted announced his amicable departure from the band. Shortly after the band appeared at the ESPN Awards in April of the same year, Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich entered the recording studio to begin work on their next album, with producer Bob Rock lined up to handle bass duties for the sessions (meanwhile, rumors swirled of former Ozzy Osbourne/Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez being considered for the vacated position). That same summer, the band's recording sessions (and all other band-related matters) were put on hold as Hetfield entered an undisclosed rehab facility for alcoholism and other addictions. He completed treatment and rejoined Metallica as they headed back into the studio in 2002 to record St. Anger, which was released in mid-2003.
The recording of St. Anger was capped with the search for a permanent replacement for Newsted. After a long audition process, former Ozzy Osbourne/Suicidal Tendencies bass player Robert Trujillo was selected and joined Metallica for their 2003-2004 world tour.
Death Magnetic spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and the group supported it with an extensive international tour that included a festival gig with Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. In 2012 Metallica launched their own label, Blackened, which would be distributed by Universal; then, the following year, they announced the release of their second motion picture, Through the Never, which combined spectacular concert footage of them blasting through gems from their back catalog with a surreal road-trip odyssey starring Dane DeHaan. The film and its accompanying soundtrack album were released in September 2013. Over the next few years, Metallica played the occasional high-profile concert as they worked on a new studio album. In 2016, the band launched a series of expanded reissues, starting with deluxe editions of Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning.

Anthony Phillips' first post-Genesis solo album was an extension of the pseudo-medieval folk elements found on Trespass, the last of his Genesis albums. Much of this recording sounds like a lost Genesis album, understandable since Phil Collins does a lot of the singing, and Michael Rutherford is present on guitar, bass, and keyboards, and also shares composer credits with him on major parts of this album. Portions of the material here, in fact, seem to have been derived from pieces they composed together in Genesis' early days that proved unsuitable for performance on-stage. Thus, The Geese & the Ghost comes off as a sort of throwback, picking up stylistically where Trespass or Nursery Cryme (check out the second part of the title track) left off nearly six years earlier.

The performances were recorded in 2018, and they are loyal to Haynes' multi-genre brand of music. Drawing from the best of over 300 songs, Danny Louis (keys, backing vocals), Andy Hess (bass) and Matt Abts (drums) are top-notch improvisers. But this is never at the cost of energetic performances. That's where many jam bands fall short: they sacrifice dynamics and coherence for 10-minute pentatonic solos. Gov't Mule isn't one of those bands! The rhythm section is tight - synergy is the priority behind every musical choice. On Trane/Eternity's Breath/ St Stephen, the communication between Hess and Abts is just phenomenal. They transition with ease between prog and jazz, jazz and blues. Revolution Come, Revolution Go also shows how much the quartet can groove. Their improv is always built on the steady foundations of Haynes' writing. From that starting point, they are given free reign to play on which ever style they please.
