But it does have a great singalong chorus, and besides-you don't come to Interpol for R&B summer jams. You're here for tracks like the dark-hearted "Something Changed," with its haunting piano, lounge-jazz drum and a delightfully odd vibe that suggests if The National covered Interpol. Or moody "Toni," with its skittering drum beat and vocals that, according to Banks, producer Flood compared to "Mickey Rourke in Barfly, singing to a patron at the end of the tabletop." The Other Side of Make-Believe is co-produced by Flood and his longtime collaborator Alan Moulder, and there are touches of the duo's grand, open sound that made albums by U2 and The Killers sound so big. "Mr. Credit" has true swagger, with Sam Fogarino's drums going from splashy bursts to full-on crashing waves, and Banks coming on more like Bowie than usual. "Renegade Hearts" is, for Interpol, a muscular hard-charger with a low-end growl and glints of sunshine; more than anything, it recalls Boy-era U2. Kessler's guitar line on "Into the Night" is like a snake working its way into your brain, while "Big Shot City" has hot spots of ska-inspired guitar. So does the glorious "Gran Hotel," which starts off shadowy and low before kicking in majorly, Banks' vocals bursting out of nowhere and keeping the energy high. And "Passenger" is pretty great, all piercing guitar and drums throbbing like the adrenaline that's triggered by true love and fear alike. "I need something to hold/ Someone to grasp at/ When I fall into a hole/ With a mountain on my back," Bank sings, weary of the everyday drama. Since 1983 the Ozric Tentacles have woven psychedelic audio-tapestries that capture the almost dangerous musical diversity of the free festival scene, blending acid rock with dub, reggae, ethnic world music and electronic, jazzy experimentation.

Ed Wynne, founding member and leader of the outfit, now presents a new project. A long term admirer and friend of Gre Vanderloo, better known from his project Gracerooms, the two have now teamed up to record Tumbling Through The Floativerse.

"I've always enjoyed the synth orientated musical worlds he creates with his project 'Gracerooms'" says Ed of his new collaborator. "Shortly before lockdown 2020, whilst making the early stages of the recent Ozrics album Space for the Earth, we decided to try and make some tunes together. Gre came over from Holland where he lives, to the Blue Bubble Studio here in Fife and we started recording pretty much straight away. We ended up with about six definite starting points, which then developed and unfolded into a harmonic realm we referred to as 'The Floativerse'. A place where you might escape gravity for a moment".

Featuring guest appearances from Gracerooms bassist, Paul Klaessen and longterm Ozrics synth player Silas Neptune, the entire album was recorded at Ozrics head quarters; Blue Bubble Studios, engineered and produced by Ed Wynne and mastered by Adam Goodlet. Scaled smaller than 2012's double-album Privateering, Tracker also feels suitably subtle, easing its way into being instead of announcing itself with a thunder. Such understatement is typical of Mark Knopfler, particularly in the third act of his career. When he left Dire Straits behind, he also left behind any semblance of playing for the cheap seats in an arena, but Tracker feels quieter than his new millennial norm. Some of this is due to the undercurrent of reflection tugging at the record's momentum. Knopfler isn't pining for the past but he is looking back, sometimes wistfully, sometimes with a resigned smile, and he appropriately draws upon sounds that he's long loved. Usually, this means some variation of pub rock -- the languid ballad "River Towns," the lazy shuffle "Skydiver," the two-chord groove of "Broken Bones" -- but this is merely the foundation from which Knopfler threads in a fair amount of olde British folk and other roots digressions. This delicate melancholy complements echoes of older Knopfler songs -- significant stretches of the record are reminiscent of the moodier aspects of Brothers in Arms, while "Beryl" has just a bit of the "Sultans of Swing" bounce -- and this skillful interweaving of Knopfler's personal past helps give Tracker a nicely gentle resonance.

Tastes and sounds were changing quickly in the late '80s, which prompted New Order's most startling transformation yet -- from moody dance-rockers to, well, moody acid-house mavens. After the band booked a studio on the island hotspot of Ibiza, apparently not knowing that it was the center of the burgeoning house music craze, New Order's sure instincts for blending rock and contemporary dance resulted in another confident, superb LP. Technique was the group's most striking production job, with the single "Fine Time" proving a close runner-up to "Blue Monday" as the most extroverted dance track in the band's catalog. Opening the record, it was a portrait of a group unrecognizable from its origins, delivering lascivious and extroverted come-ons amid pounding beats. It appeared that dance had fully taken over from rock, with the guitars and bass only brought in for a quick solo or bridge. But while pure dance was the case for the singles "Fine Time" and "Round & Round," elsewhere New Order were still delivering some of the best alternative pop around, plaintive and affecting songs like "Run" (the third single), "Love Less," and "Dream Attack." Placed in the perfect position to deliver the definitive alternative take on house music, the band produced another classic record.

By popular demand, Radiant Records presents a limited edition 4 CD/2 Blu-ray edition of the full sets by Flying Colors and Neal Morse Band at Morsefest 2019.

Flying Colors made their Morsefest debut at this show, which was also the first live show to include songs from their album Third Degree. As well as the concert debuts of "More," "You Are Not Alone," and "Crawl," the band included a range of highlights from their first two albums. Backed by string players and backing singers, this show was a joyous event for fans and band alike.

The Neal Morse Band played The Great Adventure for the final time in the run supporting the album at Morsefest. For this grand finale, the band were supported by backing singers, percussion, a horn section and string players in an awesome rendition of the album. Morsefest 2019 closed with the Neal Morse Band playing "The Great Medley", at 25 minute summary of highlights from the albums from Testimony through to Similitude of a Dream.

The 4 CD/2 Blu-ray also features a host of bonus features including two of the VIP Q&A sessions from Morsefest 2019, featuring all of the members of both bands taking questions from the crowd. There are also some additional multiscreen video mixes of tracks from both Flying Colors and the Neal Morse Band. Taken from the iso-cams located on the stage, you get an alternate view of the show from various stage angles, including around, behind and below Mike Portnoy's drum kit.

RSO is a collaboration between guitar virtuosos and hard rock power couple Richie Sambora and Orianthi Panagaris. Sambora spent 30 years as the lead guitarist for stadium rock icons Bon Jovi, and also enjoyed a successful solo career, while Australia-born Orianthi first caught the public's attention as the lead guitarist for Michael Jackson's This Is It tour before starting her own solo venture and collaborating or performing alongside a wide array of artists, including Steven Tyler, Prince, Santana, Steve Vai, Alice Cooper, and Lacey Sturm, among others. Versatile instrumentalists who can go from classic rock and blues to R&B and country on a dime, the pair began operating under the RSO moniker in 2017 when they released their debut EP, Rise, via BMG Records.

Scar for Life are back with their 5th album Sociophobia, which includes 12 new tracks and some additions to Alex Santos' and Rob Mancini's past adventure, the 2014 album "World's Entwined". Marc Lynn (Gotthard) on bass and guest musicians Tobbe Jonsson (The Lightbringer Of Sweden) and Darrel Treece-Birch (TEN) on drums and Darrel Treece-Birch (Ten) on keyboards complete the line-up. The long pause was used to reflect the controversy of the actual world situation in their energy, their songs and above all in their lyrics. Guitarist Alexandre Santos founded the Portuguese heavy rock band Scar for Life in 2008, with songs ranging from very aggressive, groovy pieces to acoustic songs and with a penchant for unforgettable hooks and vocal melodies. In 2014, US singer Rob Mancini (Boneyard Dog) joined the band. Definitely one of the best Portuguese metal bands in the scene.

Released three months after Fear of the Dawn, Jack White's latest isn't so much a sequel as a completely different beast. If Fear was his Black Sabbath record, Entering Heaven Alive is his low-key, often acoustic Led Zeppelin era. The "Going to California" and "Over the Hills and Far Away" vibes are strong, and it's kind of wild how much White sounds like Robert Plant on these songs. (The title, White has said, draws biblical inspiration from the story of the prophet Elijah going to heaven without dying.) It's also the "quieter" record, but hardly quiet. "All Along the Way" is medieval folky-delicate and mysterious but not twee; in fact, the bridge majorly flexes muscle. "I've Got You Surrounded (With My Love)" starts off swampy before an electric guitar slices through the thick humidity and the whole thing rolls into a Chicago-style blues-funk strut. Excellent opener "A Tip from You to Me" is a full-on embrace of '70s classic rock and an intriguing mix of Zeppelin, the Band and Leon Russell-style piano. It also encapsulates the stubbornly independent, kinda morose, world-against-me lyrical bent White traffics in more and more: "Ask yourself if you are happy/ Then you cease to be/ That's a tip from you to me . Now I know for sure/ I don't need nobody's help now anymore." "Please God, Don't Tell Anyone" is a gothic, not goth, litany of regrets and dread ("Please God . don't show anyone all the idiot things that I've done"). As on Fear of the Dawn, White bares some surprisingly playful eccentricities. With its fairytale strings and piano, "Help Me Along" channels Yellow Submarine-era Beatles via a funny little melody, like a tugboat bobbing on the waves. "A Tree On Fire From Within" sounds at once ominous and uplifting, cruising on a groovy bass line and piano runs. And "Queen Of The Bees" is a high-drama love song with a swirly garage-psych melody-marimba!-and some of the most impish lyrics White's ever written: "Pass me the bread and the brown sugar too/ And I'll butter your bread . I want to hold you like a sloth hugs a tree."(Perhaps it's a tribute to Black Belles singer Olivia Jean, White's longtime girlfriend who he proposed to and married at a concert earlier this year.) White has admitted, "I was challenging myself to sort of see what I could get away with! If you went back when I was 25 and said, 'Would you write lyrics about buttering toast?' I would say, 'Never, I would never do that!'" Bookending the project, he revives Fear's heavy-as-all-get-out opener "Taking Me Back" here as closer "Taking Me Back (Gently)," a jazzy steampunk version recorded on 1930s equipment. The revamp feels like an Appalachian-ized Charleston and may be totally unnecessary-it's hard to imagine it becoming a live staple-but White certainly leaves you thinking. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Highway Sentinels is a project created by Steven Rosen and Jimmy Waldo. Steven, himself a legendary author, journalist and guitar enthusiast going back to the 1970s, be it traveling on a plane with Led Zeppelin or as a close friend of Eddie Van Halen, he has always been at the forefront of rock journalism and its surrounding culture. Jimmy Waldo, founding member of Alcatrazz and New England, as well as having performed and recorded with the likes of Quiet Riot, Vinnie Vincent, Blackthorne, Pretty Maids, W.A.S.P., Skull, The Scream and many more, has an astounding resume and a catalog of recorded music few can rival.
During the lockdowns of 2021 the two men set about recording a batch of songs that they had been working on for a number of years, some dating back even decades were brought into the mix. The right vocalist had to be found as the guys wanted one consistent singer throughout to tie it all together, too many records these days are made up of singer 1 plus singer 2, 3 and 4 . And while there are a number of highly skilled guest guitarists on this record, the guys felt it important to also present this as a band union, so it not comes across as yet another 'chuck all these guys together and see what happens' type of project. Each guest soloist was chosen for the song, rather than name value alone.
David Reece was this vocalist, his work with Accept, Bangalore Choir, Bonfire and as a solo artist speaks for itself . He was given complete freedom to write lyrics and vocal melodies. A couple of songs come from the past. "Afterlife" and "We Won't Be Forgotten" come from Jimmy's past with Blackthorne and "Victim Of The Night" is a song David had recorded with Bangalore Choir which never found its way onto the classic debut of that band. Mark Zonder on drums brings an enormous pedigree to the record, known worldwide as the longtime drummer of Fates Warning and Warlord as well as the newly launched A-Z band with Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder; it all made sense to have Mark Zonder be the featured drummer on this record. On bass we have Donnie Van Stavern, from the much loved metal legends Riot, Donnie's involvement means that no one has to worry about the bottom end falling out of a song, or having to have the guitarist recut the bass parts in a backroom somewhere . Donnie only plays one way . and that is go for the throat full on metal!
All together this is "Highway Sentinels" a record rooted very much in the traditions classic rock. The album is titled "The Waiting Fire"... but now you will wait no longer.

Arriving by time machine from the psychedelic era - and yet always thrillingly ahead of their time -- MAPLE MARS landed on the Los Angeles pop scene with a multi-colored bang! Claus Lessmann and Michael Voss [CASANOVA, MAD MAX] have joined forces as LESSMANN/VOSS and created their debut album Rock Is Our Religion. Admittedly, calling it a debut is a bit of an understatement given that this isn't the first time the two have worked together to release music, as they are also members of rock band PHANTOM 5.

It's also worth pointing out that Rock Is Our Religion is the brilliant result of not only Lessmann and Voss, but also of producer Michael Schenker [SCORPIONS, THE MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP]. Together, they have produced an album which is a mixture of both classic and modern rock music, something can you picture different generations enjoying and bonding over. Essentially it doesn't matter if you're part of the classic 80s rock crowd or part of the new generation; you can picture LESSMAN/VOSS performing at a festival and seeing the varying age groups joining forces and having the best time together.

Overall, Rock Is Our Religion is a highly enjoyable record. It's the type of album that you could bring out in the middle of a heatwave (a bit too soon?) and have played in the background as you sit with friends whilst having a barbecue and drinks. It's also an album that will make you feel good and something you can play regardless of environment, whether it's at that festival or at home doing housework, it will make you feel pumped, you will fist bump and you will find yourself headbanging along.

ZZ Top releaseda new album titled RAW that was recorded in connection with the band's wildly popular and critically lauded 2019 Netflix documentary That Little Ol' Band From Texas. The first track set released is "Brown Sugar", one of the earlier recordings in the band's career. The Grammy-nominated feature from Banger Films and director Sam Dunn includes an interlude that finds the group's classic line up -- Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and the late Dusty Hill -- gathering for a very intimate session at Gruene Hall, "the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas" located in New Braunfels, in the heart of Texas hill country. That performance provided the basis for the RAW album release.

Ben Harper is a musical preacher of sorts, never one to be shy in speaking his mind about social conformity. If his first two albums -- Welcome to the Cruel World and Fight for Your Mind -- didn't clue you in, Diamonds on the Inside will definitely do so. Diamonds on the Inside marks Harper's fifth studio effort and this time he's emotionally in touch with what makes his heart burst. This is a passionate album, no doubt. His signature Weissenborn guitar joins him once more and Harper's classic groovy funk is heavy; however, Harper adds worldbeat to his musical plank. From the Marley-esque vibe of "With My Own Two Hands" to the African soundscapes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo on "Picture of Jesus," Harper's purist presentation is smooth. "When It's Good" gives a little country blues twang, while "Touch From You Lust" is a sexy haze of writhing riffs. "Temporary Remedy" follows the funk Lenny Kravitz-style, and Harper's a bit campy. It's a noticeable change from his typically serious stature and a nice shift in personality, too. Diamonds on the Inside is another stunning effort from one of rock's underground heroes. Harper has consistently worked with what appeals to him musically for nearly a decade, ignoring what fits the mainstream. Diamonds on the Inside is Harper's sixth chapter of truth and just one listen to the electric blaze of "Everything" will convince you.

Probably the first album to successfully merge the seemingly disparate sounds of rap and heavy metal, Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut was groundbreaking enough when released in 1992, but many would argue that it has yet to be surpassed in terms of influence and sheer brilliance -- though countless bands have certainly tried. This is probably because the uniquely combustible creative relationship between guitar wizard Tom Morello and literate rebel vocalist Zack de la Rocha could only burn this bright, this once. While the former's roots in '80s heavy metal shredding gave rise to an inimitable array of six-string acrobatics and rhythmic special effects (few of which anyone else has managed to replicate), the latter delivered meaningful rhymes with an emotionally charged conviction that suburban white boys of the ensuing nu-metal generation could never hope to touch. As a result, syncopated slabs of hard rock insurrection like "Bombtrack," "Take the Power Back," and "Know Your Enemy" were as instantly unforgettable as they were astonishing. Yet even they paled in comparison to veritable clinics in the art of slowly mounting tension such as "Settle for Nothing," "Bullet in the Head," and the particularly venomous "Wake Up" (where Morello revises Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" riff for his own needs) -- all of which finally exploded with awesome power and fury. And even listeners who were unable (or unwilling) to fully process the band's unique clash of muscle and intellect were catered to, as RATM were able to convey their messages through stubborn repetition via the fundamental challenge of "Freedom" and their signature track, "Killing in the Name," which would become a rallying cry of disenfranchisement, thanks to its relentlessly rebellious mantra of "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" Ultimately, if there's any disappointment to be had with this near-perfect album, it's that it still towers above subsequent efforts as the unequivocal climax of Rage Against the Machine's vision. As such, it remains absolutely essential.

Wilco's 11th album, 2015's Star Wars, was a playful and angular set of noisy pop and pop-friendly noise, and it seemed fitting that it literally appeared out of nowhere, with the band sending it out as a free download without any advance warning one July afternoon. Little more than a year later, Wilco has released a follow-up, Schmilco, and in many respects this album is the flip side to Star Wars. Schmilco feels every bit as spontaneous as Star Wars (and much of the material was recorded during the same sessions), but where the earlier album seemed full of the joy of making music, this one is somber and low-key, a set of navel-gazing music even as the tunes confirm that Jeff Tweedy's way with a melody hasn't failed him. Acoustic guitars dominate most of Schmilco's 12 songs, with Tweedy's vocals right up front, sounding introspective and emphatic at once. On first listen, Schmilco plays like the work of one man and his guitar alone with his thoughts and his sorrows late one night. It takes a couple of spins for the contributions of the rest of the band to really sink in, but once they do, it becomes apparent this truly is a Wilco album, as Nels Cline's guitars, Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen's keyboards, and Glenn Kotche's drums bring a rich spectrum of dynamics and texture to the songs, while John Stirratt's bass anchors these songs both melodically and rhythmically. Just as 1999's Summerteeth sounded like a smart pop album when observed casually but was an emotional horror show beneath the surface, Schmilco feels simple and declarative on first glance, but the deeper one is willing to dig, the more there is to find, both in terms of the band's interplay (which gets better and more intuitive with each album) and Tweedy's songs (which boast as much compassion and concern as brooding). Star Wars was Wilco's cheerfully bent version of a summer album; Schmilco is clearly music for autumn, meant for cool nights, crunching through the leaves, and the occasional dark night of the soul. And it speaks volumes about Wilco that they could make two albums so different within such a short space of time, and both times giving us music that sounds like no one else.

NEBULA have been a stoner rock force since guitarist Eddie Glass broke away from the equally formidable FU MANCHU with former drummer Ruben Romano in 1997. Transmissions From Mothership Earth dials up the cosmic strangeness and attempts to communicate with life from beyond the cosmos. Following on from their acclaimed 2019 album Holy Shit, NEBULA once again rise to the challenge and continue their run of form, venturing through a variety of evolving soundscapes to transport you beyond the stratosphere.

Masters of blending the best elements of BLACK SABBATH with psychedelia and space rock, NEBULA have always been pioneers of their own unique take on stoner rock. What separates Transmissions From Mothership Earth from their previous work however, is that the album feels more conceptual, with a high level of focus on tying the songs together with a single galactic thread. Whilst the story is left for the listener to interpret for themselves, there is definitely a narrative running through the album, whether it be actually trying to communicate with some stoned aliens or just getting high and hallucinating that you're communicating with some stoned aliens.

Transmissions From Mothership Earth has a more expansive quality as an album in comparison to Holy Shit or even one of the band's classic albums like To The Centre. Yet the stoner rock titans have brought some familiar musical approaches from 2009's Heavy Psych - Warzone Speedwulf being a prime example of this. The song stands out from the rest of the album as it sees NEBULA delve deep into the psychedelic lost oddities box to create a continuously evolving soundscape of warped vocals and driven guitar solos that drift from ear to ear. Even so, NEBULA never stray far from their sun-drenched, desert roots. The album was recorded in the Mojave desert, and those deep desert grooves mixed in with spacey, melodic vocals and rumbling, effervescent bass, are the beating heart of the album. Despite the lyrical matter being in space, Transmissions From Mothership Earth is still firmly grounded and incredibly earthy.

NEBULA effortlessly continue their strong form here, tapping into a rich vein of creativity that has seen the band expand their sound as well as unleashing a few surprises. Transmissions From Mothership Earth is an intensely enjoyable journey through a hazy cosmos in the mind, its vivid riff writing taking you on a far out journey beyond the Milky Way.
