"Toxic Devotion was born in a fairly unpressured environment, researching and living on the terms of the songs. We did what felt good at the time, and we didn't take too much stress out of the release. The album deals with a wide range of emotions related to human life, from frustration to anger and from passion to sadness. In order not to be too serious, the heavier topics are also accompanied by that famous twinkle in the eye that is typical of Memoremains' music. The album's title is based on a reflection on how devotion to the objects of passion can sometimes turn toxic. Whether it's working at the expense of one's own well-being or mistreating relationships while promoting one's own goals, there is a fine line between when good intentions turn into poison," says singer Johanna Ahonen.

Norwegian proggers Tusmørke are not only one of the most prolific and creative outfits in this green and pleasant land of ours but also one of the very best and most rewarding listens there is. Their discography is both vast and unique, and their take on psychedelic folk prog is as original and wonderfully quirky as can be. Now, you never quite know what to expect whenever these chaps release a new album, which is a charming and intriguing thing in and of itself, and I was unsure as to how a live album captured for posterity at the fabulous Big Dipper record store in Oslo would come across, but as it turns out, it is fucking brilliant. It just feels right, if you know what I mean?

En Pakt med Naturen sounds so warm and vibrant that it easily could have been recorded in front of a roaring fireplace inside a remote cabin somewhere in the mountains. The compositions are teeming with life and perfectly marry the bucolic and pastoral-sounding with something that can only be termed unnerving and somewhat eerie, which probably accounts for why the tag "folk horror" occasionally appears alongside the Tusmørke moniker.

The Final Solution was among the more intriguing of the legions of bands populating the mid-1960s San Francisco rock scene. Though they rarely recorded, the outfit was captured at the height of their powers in a blistering live performance at legendary SF club The Matrix. Now officially available, this long-overdue anthology of their extant recordings is prime evidence that this band deserves to be heard.

The Solution was formed in 1965 by bassist Bob Knickerbocker and guitarist Ernie Fosselius, friends at San Francisco State, then a melting pot of personalities which would fuel San Francisco's young-adult bohemian scene. Rounding out the band were John Chance on drums and John Yager on guitar and vocals. The group began by playing Haight-Ashbury dives like Haight Levels, and were soon gaining notoriety for their performances.

In July of 1966, the Solution had stepped in to perform when the Great! Society had to cancel a gig at San Francisco's Matrix club. Peter Abram was running his tape deck that night and captured a dynamic set that clearly shows the band's diversity and musical chops. From the opening raga "Tell Me Again" to the propulsive folk-rock of "Time Is Here And Now" and the Dylan-esque "Bleeding Roses", the Solution's original songs leave unequivocal proof of their untapped potential.

The live material has been newly transferred from Abram's original reels and expertly mastered by Dan Hersch to reveal the magic on stage that night in July 1966. In addition to "Truck Driving Son-Of-A Gun" from the Matrix performance, the CD contains an additional 6 tracks recorded in their rehearsal space in November 1966 with The Great! Society's Jerry Slick on drums.

"Underground" is a relative term. One could argue that all the '60s San Francisco psychedelic bands were underground, because the music they made was so far removed from the pop and rock sounds that came before them. But of all the bands in the scene, Lamb was perhaps the most underground of them all. Along with classically trained guitarist and songwriting partner Bob Swanson, Barbara Mauritz's versatile vocals paced material often imbued with a haunting, mystical aura. Yet they could also be earthy and rootsy, occasionally drifting into spacey psychedelia with hints of raga-rock.

Released in the early '70s, Lamb's first two albums, A Sign of Change and Cross Between, did indeed offer some of the most intriguing and eclectic music of any San Francisco rock band on the psychedelic scene. But Lamb's history predated the release of those records by a good couple of years or so. So prolific were Mauritz and Swanson that quite a few of their original compositions didn't make it onto their albums, though these were often on par with the songs that did find official release. Unlike many bands of the time who had a bounty of surplus quality tunes, Lamb often taped these in studios and studio-like rehearsal conditions, as well as making some professional tapes of their live performances.

Fortunately, many of those tapes survive, including a good number of songs that didn't find a place on their LPs, as well as substantially different versions of some that did. The best of these from the late 1960s find release for the first time on An Extension of Now: Unreleased Recordings 1968-1969. This collection not only rounds out our picture of one of San Francisco rock's finest underappreciated acts, but also serves as a first-class document of Lamb as they made their transition from a more standard rock outfit to a group not easily comparable to any other in the region, or indeed any other anywhere. Our black vinyl and CD (with extra tracks, limited to 500) releases feature liner notes by Richie Unterberger drawn from an interview with Bob Swanson, who has also contributed photos and memorabilia from his private archive.
