"BLUE 50 (DEMOS & OUTTAKES), a digital EP that debuts five unreleased recordings from the making of Blue that will appear on the upcoming Archives collection.

Each track on BLUE 50 (DEMOS & OUTTAKES) is a standout, including the demos for "California" and an early version of "A Case Of You" that features different lyrics from those heard on the final album. There are also two alternate takes on the EP. The first is a version of "River" that adds French horns, unlike the album version, which features Mitchell solo on piano. The other alternate take is for "Urge For Going." Mitchell originally wrote the song in the mid-Sixties and often included in her early live sets. She later revisited the song during the sessions for Blue, recording a version that included strings, that differs from the version that was later released as the b-side to her 1972 hit "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio." The final unreleased song is the studio recording for "Hunter," another song that was cut from Blue at the last minute that Mitchell later performed live but never officially released on an album."

Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend has been using the COVID-19 downtime to work on new material for upcoming albums, and for a current lack of touring possibilities and encounters with fans on the road he decided to do a series of live albums, quarantine albums, and generally interesting projects that keep people entertained while he's busy on his next larger releases. The series is called the "Devolution Series".

Devin comments: "So we bring to you the 'Devolution Series': a grouping of oddities and interesting material that I would like people to hear, but don't necessarily want to present as a 'major release.'

"The series will include all the quarantine songs and concerts, as well as various live shows from the past few years.

"I am currently deep in the writing of my new projects and am very excited to be doing so. Thanks for facilitating my ability to do that, and I hope you enjoy the 'Devolution Series'."

The second release under the "Devolution Series" moniker will be the "Devolution Series #2 - Galactic Quarantine" album, scheduled for June 25. It was recorded in 2020 in various places around the world as a replacement show for the COVID-affected "Empath Vol. 2 European Tour" and canceled summer festivals.

It was in 2006 when, once a year, a group of stellar musicians and stars of rock started meeting up in London for a night of live music. The main intent was to raise money for a charity called The Sunflower Jam. At first the rumours about these sessions with Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Brian May and Alice Cooper were too good to be true, to the point that a few thought that they were nothing else than an urban legend. "The Jam" as it soon started to be called quickly became a cult night. A real must first of all for the artists themselves, finally free and happy to leave their commercial thoughts outside the venue and able to enjoy playing music together with colleagues, friends and maybe even secret rivals and for the audience, who often could simply not believe their eyes.

The Sunflower Jam started as an idea from Jacky Paice, who very often could count on the drumming of her husband Ian. Who would turn down playing with him? The first editions were mainly open to guests and music business professionals that would contribute to the charity. Later "The Jam" became too good not to be available for the public. It is in one of the earlier SFJs that Jon Lord played for the last time with his friends with Deep Purple, duetting in a peaceful "war of hammonds" with Don Airey, who had replaced Lord in Deep Purple when he decided it was enough with a life spent on the road, and after a lifetime dedicated to rock and roll, Lord left to concentrate to his first love: classical music and the combination of rock elements in it.

2014: "The Sunflower Jam" is a now a regular sold out event. The fourth one at the Royal Albert Hall. A night of great music but also an explosion of joy and will to live. Jon Lord sadly passed away in 2012. Just a few weeks before the release of the just finished remake of what is universally known as the first ever meeting of classical music and rock. The "Concerto For Group and Orchestra". The same composition that Purple played live in 1969 at the Royal Albert Hall. Considering the amount of respect, friendship and love expressed on any occasion by anybody who had worked, played or simply met Jon Lord, it is not a surprise that the 2014 Jam would be dedicated totally to his music. The night turned out to be an historical moment in rock music: A full orchestra, a director - Paul Mann - crazy enough to give wonderful arrangements to a repertoire going back and forth through fifty years of music, many old friends for an unforgettable night. The Albert Hall sold out to the last seat...

Seasoned purveyors of arena rock for the socially disengaged, Holland's Within Temptation have been carrying the symphonic goth metal torch far longer than contemporaries like Epica, Leaves Eyes, and Evanescence. That experience shines through the manufactured gloom on Black Symphony, a live CD/DVD recorded at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena with a 60-piece orchestra, 20-voice classical choir, circus performers, and enough pyrotechnics to knock the Moon out of orbit. Like any orchestral metal outfit worth its salt, the band kicks things off with an ELO-meets-The Lord of the Rings-inspired "Ouverture" that seamlessly runs into the group's 2005 hit, "Jillian (I'd Give My Heart)," before descending into a set that relies almost entirely on material from 2007's Heart of Everything. It's as big, ballsy, theatrical, and overly melodramatic as one would expect (Life of Agony's Keith Caputo reprises his studio role on the delightfully over the top "What Have You Done"), but it's executed perfectly, as evidenced by the 10,000 screaming fans who were lucky enough to sell the show out.

Angel Dream is a special reimagining of the album She's The One to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its original release. This also brings to a close the celebration of Tom Petty's masterpiece Wildflowers, as most of the songs on this album were recorded during the same time period. She's The One included some songs that were left off the original Wildflowers album, recently included in the Wildflowers & All The Rest re-issue. Family singer Roger Chapman released a new solo album, Life In The Pond, through Ruf Records on June 25.

Life In The Pond, Chappo's first studio outing since 2009's Hide Go Seek, reunites him with faces from his past - including Family's Poli Palmer as co-writer/producer and guest guitar from Procol Harum's Geoff Whitehorn, while connecting the dots between his early influences and taking the pulse of modern life.

"There's nostalgia for the different musical styles that influenced my life," says Chapman. "American rock from the '50s to now. British R'n'B from the '60s, like Georgie Fame, the Stones, Zoot Money. Folk. Blues. Motown. Stax. Blue Note jazz. Classical. Americana. Country. A whole mess of influences. Mostly it's anger at politicians that's kept me fired up. But I'm also influenced by daily happenings, world news, people, acquaintances. It's all in the lyrics."

Before forming Motörhead, Ian Kilmister (aka Lemmy) could boast of having been a member of space rock cowboys Hawkwind and a career in horsebreaking (that's horsebreaking, not housebreaking). He was also, to top it all, the son of a vicar. Having been expelled from his former employers after a disagreement with border guards over the contents of his luggage, he took the name for his new band from the final song he'd written for Hawkwind. Together with Larry Wallis of the Pink Fairies and drummer Philthy Animal Taylor, Motörhead recorded a debut album that was rejected by United Artists (you can just imagine the face of the poor guy who got the short straw and had to tell Lemmy), though it was eventually released as On Parole in 1979. As a result, the group expanded with the addition of "Fast" Eddie Clarke on guitar. Wallis then left after just one rehearsal, leaving the classic Motörhead lineup in shape for their debut proper. Rock & roll had never heard the like. Though only a minor chart success, Motörhead patented the group's style: Lemmy's rasping vocal over a speeding juggernaut of guitar, bass, and drums. The lyrical theme was "Don't mess with us" instead of "Don't mess with our hair." Before this, hard rock was about musicianship and exhibitionism. Motörhead, conversely, returned mainstream rock to its most brutal base elements -- no wonder the punks liked them.

Gentle Giant's albums featured many songs with both literary subjects as well as social and personal commentary on life as rock musicians. "Free Hand" has more than most. The album's title & first track was named "Freehand" because the band had just changed record labels and management and felt unshackled by prior contractual obligations. Putting these issues behind them upon its first release, Gentle Giant embarked on an extensive tour of North America and Europe, plus a short tour of the UK, to promote the album.

The incredible range of Gentle Giant's music is evident throughout this album. From the intricate vocal fretwork of "On Reflection" and the delicate medieval flavor of "Talybont" the Celtic-tinged rock of "Time To Kill" and the jagged rhythms of "Just The Same" all those diverse elements which made the band so strikingly original are skillfully blended and perfectly executed.

Sacred Love is the seventh studio album by Sting. Sacred Love arrives over four years on from Brand New Day and demonstrates that Sting--an artist often criticised for serving up slick yet soulless coffee-table precision--is now positively galvanised by soul. Symptomatic of an uncharacteristically intimate co-production job (courtesy of the man himself and Kipper), there's a degree of inclusive warmth here that's occasionally been lacking in his post-Police work. From the busy, insistent verbosity of spiralling opener "Inside", through "Whenever I Say Your Name"--a gospel-tinged, call-and-response collaboration with class-drenched Mary J Blige--and on to the sweeping Iberian soundscapes of "Send Your Love", Sacred Love compounds Sting's reputation as an authoritative singer-songwriter of incredibly broad stylistic scope.

"Sting scored a moderate comeback success greater than most had imagined possible with 1999's Brand New Day, reestablishing himself as a viable commercial artist instead of merely settling for "living legend" status. Part of this success was due to "Desert Rose," featuring vocalist Farhat Bouallagui's careening cadences that garnered attention, particularly when they were showcased in a car commercial that kicked the album into high commercial gear. Sting picks up on this, adding three guest vocalists to the ten-track Sacred Love album (the 11th track is a remix of the lead single, "Send Your Love" -- which happens to be better, since it eliminates the rather annoying Indian-styled hook) -- Vicente Amigo and Anoushka Shankar are paired with Mary J. Blige, who in this context is presented as a world music artist. None of the guests makes much of an impression here, but neither does Sting, since this is an album that puts sound over song or performance. Sacred Love is to Brand New Day what Mercury Falling was to Ten Summoner's Tales -- a fussy, overworked stab at maturity, one that has impeccable craft but is obscured by its own meticulousness. It is professional to a fault, using its maturity and preciseness to obscure the fact that the songs don't really work. Sting isn't always hemmed-in, even ending "Inside" with a hysterical rant that makes him seem like a madman, but it has the effect of making the rest of the album seeming too deliberate and far from adventurous. It's far from a bad listen, nor is it embarrassing, but it's entirely too predictable, coming across as nothing more than well-tailored, expensive mood music, which is certainly far less than what Sacred Love could have been." Inspired by the artwork of Roger Dean and the writings of Ver Stanley Alder, Jon Anderson developed an entire story around the idea of an interstellar exodus from Sunhillow, writing this album around the narrative (named for the spaceship's architect, Olias). The idea may seem overly ambitious, but Anderson fills the record with enough magical moments to delight fans of Yes' mystic side. The music is written and performed almost entirely by Anderson, who dubs vocals, plays guitar and harp, and adds percussion and the occasional synthesizer to flesh out his ideas so that at no point does the music lose its spellbinding effect for lack of sonic detail. Olias of Sunhillow is faithful to the spirit of Yes, though decidedly more airy than that band's visceral style -- its closest comparison would be Fragile's "We Have Heaven" or Going for the One's "Wonderous Stories" (which was clearly influenced by this record) on the vocal tracks, and Greek progressive electronic composer (and future Anderson collaborator) Vangelis on the instrumental tracks. Although the album is effective in its entirety, "Sound Out the Galleon," "Olias (To Build the Moorglade)," and "Solid Space" are some of the more memorable excerpts. The arrangements incorporate elements of the four tribes of Sunhillow, the most noticeable being Oriental elements that prefigure Vangelis' own China (especially on the opening "Ocean Song"). While there are several songs that could have easily fit in Yes' own catalog, and the lyrics continue to mine the mystical musings that Yes fans had come to enjoy, Olias of Sunhillow is not the missing Yes album some might hope it to be, though it does prefigure the later Jon & Vangelis collaborations of the '80s. If possible, pick up the LP version of this release, since the packaging is stunning and features terrific artwork by Dave Roe.

Toby Hitchcock (Pride Of Lions) that new solo album, "Changes" released on July 9, 2021.

Powerhouse American vocalist Toby Hitchcock is one of the most recognizable, powerful, and charismatic voices in the current Melodic Rock/AOR scene. As frontman of Pride of Lions, he has been the voice behind some of the best new classics of the genre, always delivering passionate and outstanding performances. Vocally, he has often been compared to legendary figures like Bobby Kimball (Toto), Jimi Jamison (Survivor), or Lou Gramm (Foreigner), which is astounding company to be in. Hitchcock's voice has the depth, feeling, and extension of each of them, while still maintaining his own identity and trademark style. In short, he is an absolute star in the current Melodic Rock scene.

While Jim Peterik is preparing a new Jim Peterik's World Stage album, Toby took the time to commence work on another solo record. Following the excellent results that "Mercury's Down" and "The Reckoning" received, this will be another welcome entry in Hitchcock's growing discography. This time, Toby hooked up with Frontiers in-house producer Alessandro Del Vecchio, who has created an outstanding collection of songs highlighting the skills of Toby's tenor voice. Greek music fans may also recognize an outstanding and rocking international version of Despina Vandi's hit "Xano Esena," here entitled "Before I Met You".

For Melodic Rock/AOR fans, there is no reason to miss this record, which promises to easily be one of the top Melodic Rock albums of the year!

"Cocked & Loaded Live" will precede the release of a brand new studio album from Lewis, Guns, and company, which is due this fall.

L.A. Guns, aka Phil Lewis, Tracii Guns, Ace Von Johnson, Johnny Martin, and Scotty Coogan, thus performed a one of a kind show which was streamed worldwide to fans in the comfort of their own homes. The band performed all the classic proper studio tracks from Cocked & Loaded and, as usual, delivered a killer show. Picking right up where they left off from their previous incessant touring cycles and relieved to finally be onstage again, the band tore through all the classic album tracks that fans know and love. From "Rip and Tear" to "Never Enough" to "The Ballad of Jayne" to "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Malaria," this was a primal, visceral performance. And while celebrating a milestone in their career, the band also acknowledged the present and played "Speed" from their more recent album "The Missing Peace".

Flower Travelling Band was Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin meeting Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath at the Ash Ra Temple. Simply put, they played grand, spacey, tripped-out hard rock with a riffy base that was only two steps removed from the blues, but their manner of interpreting those steps came from an acid trip. Flower Travelling Band was an entity unto itself. There are five tracks on this set, originally released in 1971 as the band's second album proper. It has been reissued on CD by WEA International in Japan, with the cover depicting a silhouette drawing of the Buddha in meditative equipoise filled in with sketches of an inner universe mandala of the sacred Mount Meru, stupas, and the hash smoking caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland, Japanese sci-fi robot cartoons, and more. And the music is reflected in this inner universal realm on five different sections of Satori. From power chords to Eastern-tinged, North African, six-string freakouts, to crashing tom toms, to basses blasting into the red zone, Satori is a journey to the center of someplace that seems familiar but has never before been visited. It is a new sonic universe constructed from cast-off elements of the popular culture of the LSD generation. Forget everything you know about hard rock from the 1970s until you've put this one through your headphones. It's monolithic, expansive, flipped to wig city, and full of a beach blanket bong-out muscularity. In other words, this is a "real" classic and worth any price you happen to pay for it

Following their successful appearance here on the Golden Rose TV Festival in April 1969, the band was invited back to play the Montreux Jazz Festival in June to a more youthful audience. The hot sunny weather saw the boys play an impromptu afternoon matinee by the pool, which culminated in a topless Dick Heckstall-Smith diving in to cool down! During that time bootlegs were a big part of the scene. Repertoire Records has curated the best of the best and these albums are now 'officially' available for digital download for the first time. Motörhead's debut album has a very interesting story. It was finished in 1976 but was turned down by United Artists who deemed it too violent and raucous. On Parole wasn't released until the end of 1979 on the label Bronze which would shape the trio's future. The trio had already made waves by releasing two benchmark albums that year: Overkill and Bomber. Initially recorded with Larry Wallis on vocals and guitar, Lucas Fox on drums and of course the unstoppable Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals, On Parole was released in an already-modified version since Philthy "Animal" Taylor, who had become the group's drummer in the meantime, was asked to re-record most of Fox's parts (only the track Lost Johnny remained unchanged). Five of the nine tracks had already appeared on the group's first eponymous album (1977) but that didn't matter - it was time to capitalise on the wind in their sails. This was another time, with other norms. What was originally considered raucous hardly raised any eyebrows four years later. Vibrator could almost pass for sped-up Beach Boys with its sweet chorus, while Iron Horse/Born To Lose is, strictly speaking, blues. Hugely influenced by MC5, Motörhead's hard rock was still far away from their hectic Ace Of Spades. On Parole is particularly interesting album because it showcases the influences that Lemmy has often cited over the years, which became much harder to detect in his music later on. The cherry on the cake is that this "definitive" remastered re-release is supplemented by six demos produced by Dave Edmunds, the very first producer of the LP who gave up halfway. Dusted down magnificently, it's almost a shame that the whole album didn't benefit from his signature. It would have perfectly suited the trio that later became the rock legends we know today. 30th Anniversary of the American Rock Superband's most popular album Lean Into It.

First released in 1991, Lean into It, is the second studio album by the American rock supergroup, consisting of Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey, Mr. Big. This is the band's breakthrough album - Lean into It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 charts, while the single 'To Be with You' became the band's first and only song to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The follow-up single, 'Just Take My Heart', was a Top-20 hit, peaking at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.The million-selling album also contains the popular tracks 'Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy','Alive and Kickin' and 'Green Tinted Sixties Man'. Lean Into It shows that Mr. Big could also strip away all the flash and 7-minute solos and simply create well-written songs with rhythm, groove and good melodies, making the band one of the iconic new wave of progressive 'musician's bands' who could play mind-blowing complicated riffs on their instruments at lightning speeds.

This is one of the ever-green albums of 80's style hair band rock that transcends the years and 2021 is the 30th anniversary of the release. evoXS is remastering the album using hi-resolution digital transfers from the original analogue master tapes.

On this 30th Anniversary Edition, we get three extra tracks - early versions of "Alive And Kickin'" and "Green Tinted Sixties Mind," which are sure to please fans plus, of all things, an enjoyable reggae version of "To Be With You," which works far better than you might think. All in all, Lean Into It is well worth revisiting or discovering for the first time. It sounds like early 90s rock, certainly; the album's sound pins it down squarely to a particular place and time. In the long run, however, that can only be a strong point, and the quality and depth of the music is nothing if not considerable.

What do you get when the man behind Primal Scream's "Kill All Hippies" and the woman responsible for the careening wail of brutal Savages tracks like "No Face" make a record together A genteel, sophisticated, and emotionally resonant album about the devastation of a broken romance, of course. While a soft rock album may not be the first thing one would expect from Bobby GIllespie and Jehnny Beth, it's actually quite easy to find a throughline to this material from both the classic-rock slow jams in Primal Scream's catalog and the balladry found on Jehnny Beth's 2016 solo release. Still, when one discovers the Utopian Ashes aren't that of a civilization destroyed by consumerism and conservatism, but instead of a once-blissful relationship now on its last legs, it is something of a pleasant surprise. With a band lineup that's basically Primal Scream plus Jehnny Beth and her longtime collaborator Johnny Hostile, Utopian Ashes feels both connected to and entirely apart from any of their previous output, with strings and brass and lush guitar work providing the construction materials for songs that are as moody as they are heartfelt.

The first verse on the album has the line "I don't even love you anymore," and the refrain repeats throughout the song; amazingly, the ache and despondency devolves even further from there, with lyrics that are conceptually strong and character-driven but not confessional. Both artists paint a picture of this dissolute relationship from a unique perspective-the man's is self-pitying, entitled, and woeful, while the woman's is that of long-suffering optimism. Politics are largely avoided here; "English Town" uses small-minded provincialism as a stand-in for the doldrums of late-stage relationships, and that's about it. Instead, most of the lyrics are straightforward depictions of betrayal, sadness, and thwarted redemption. Gillespie takes the lead on almost all of the songs, but when Jehnny Beth steps up, it's with a surprising plaintiveness that's deftly complementary to the mid tempo achiness that defines the album, most notably on the out-and-out mopey "Your Heart Will Always Be Broken." The album peaks with the country-tinged back-and-forth duet of "You Can Trust Me Now" and the sweeping, melodramatic "Living a Lie," a one-two punch that sounds like everything is gonna be alright between our distraught couple, only to reveal that, no, it's still a disaster. As it closes with the louche desperation of "Sunk In Reverie," the inherent nihilism of our couple's romance becomes unmistakable, and it's clear that this is a tale that could only have been told by these two artists. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz
