Having already gotten off to a great start with „Deep Purple In Rock", this Purple lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice fit together like interlocking pieces. Blessed with such unerring chemistry, Purple raised the bar for hard rock with such nuggets as the hard-driving title track and the grinding 'Fools.' Elsewhere, they show surprising range with the country-flavored 'Anyone's Daughter' (featuring some impressive finger picking by Blackmore) and the Jimi Hendrix-influenced 'No One Came' (which includes a dollop of psychedelic backwards guitar). Also included is the Purple epic 'The Mule,' a sweeping tour de force dominated by Blackmore's Middle Eastern-tinged soloing and Lord's Pink Floyd-ian keyboard runs. The song became a highlight of Deep Purple's live shows.

„One of Deep Purple's four indispensable albums (the others being In Rock, Machine Head, and Burn), 1971's Fireball saw the band broadening out from the no-holds-barred hard rock direction of the previous year's cacophonous In Rock. Metal machine noises introduced the sizzling title track -- an unusually compact but explosively tight group effort on which Jon Lord's organ truly shined. The somewhat tiring repetitions of 'No No No' actually threatened to drop the ball next, but the fantastic single 'Strange Kind of Woman' nimbly caught and set it rolling again, just in time for the innuendo-encrusted hilarity of 'Anyone's Daughter,' featuring one of singer Ian Gillan's first (and still best) humorous storylines to go with one of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's most uncharacteristic, bluesiest performances ever. 'The Mule' opened the vinyl album's second side with what is perhaps Purple's finest instrumental, and on the hyper-extended 'Fools,' the bandmembers proved they could flirt with progressive rock without plunging off its cliff (although the song could probably have done without its drawn-out middle section). And closing the album was the exceptional 'No One Came,' where intertwining instrumental lines locked together beautifully, Gillan wove another entertaining yarn that was part autobiography and part Monty Python, and the often underrated skills of drummer Ian Paice helped the song sound so unreservedly fresh and intuitive that one could almost be convinced the band had winged it on the spot. Sure, the following year's Machine Head would provide Deep Purple with their commercial peak, but on Fireball, the formidable quintet was already firing on all cylinders." (Eduardo Rivadavia, AMG)

Dropped by a major label in 2018, The Wombats could have sunk like a stone. Instead, the Liverpool-formed trio has come out of that dilemma as energized as ever on their last two albums, including the new Fix Yourself, Not the World. In fact, they seem to take the title to heart: The record is the sound of a pessimist becoming a realist and trying to make the best of what they have (not exactly optimism, but baby steps). Which is pretty impressive considering the members were in three different countries during the recording sessions. "Ready for the High" starts off as a bottom-heavy monster, with dark-cloud, give-up lyrics about feeling stuck. "You can scream like a banshee and still nothing comes/ You can buy a heart balloon and watch the sky grow dull," Matt "Murph" Murphy sings. But then the whole thing opens up at the bridge, giving way to a sea of swaying trumpets symbolizing the true meaning: "The song is about being engulfed in a bad place, but rather than accepting this as immutable, acknowledging that it is only temporary and that better times are closer than they (currently) appear," Murph has said. "People Don't Change People, Time Does" sends a similar message, even if it's from a skewed perspective. "Everything I love is going to die/ So baby keep your big mouth shut and stop wasting my time," go the lyrics, reminding you to hold tight onto the raft you have. Sometimes, though, that cling wrap can look a bit like desperation. Depending on your view, bop "If You Ever Leave, I'm Coming With You" either promises or threatens, "I'm forever locking myself in the glass of your rearview." Throughout, the muscular synth comes on like, well, not quite Duran Duran-maybe more like the ⅗ Duran side project Arcadia-with exuberant, dancefloor-ready pop beats. "Wildfire" has a mid-tempo swagger that cruises on a funk groove and finds Murph putting his falsetto to good use. "Work Is Easy, Life Is Hard" shimmies and shakes. "Flip Me Upside Down" is as frenetic as Friday rush-hour city traffic. And "Don't Poke the Bear" could be a Parklife-era Blur melody. Sometimes songs sound so alike as to blend one into the other, but it's a good schtick-even when the outlook slips back into old habits: "it's not paranoia if it's really there," Murph frets on "Worry," its chorus like careening on a rain-slick road. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

"Acoustic Adventures" Volume One by Sonata Arctica is a sprawling and beautiful compilation of tunes from throughout the bands' career performed in a series of stripped-back renditions. It takes the bands' signature sound and extracts the heaviness to render the songs in a breathtaking new light. That's not to say that the songs have completely lost their heaviness but are heavy in an alternative and unique way.

The album has a timeless quality about it that conjures the spirit of the late '70s or '80s and brings with it an unexpected meditative quality.

Despite the name "Acoustic Adventures", it's not entirely an acoustic album. It's more akin to a re-imagining of the songs performed live in the studio together. Substituting the tried and true formula of distorted guitars and massive drums for something more intimate. Taking the bones of original songs from across the band's career, the performances present a fresh perspective that adds a compelling and frankly gorgeous spin absent from the original recordings.

Kandia started in November 2007, founded by singer Nya Campos Cruz and guitarist André Da Cruz. They decided to name the band Kandia - to obfuscate, to blind by light - as they felt it would represent the positivity they wanted to radiate. Influenced by progressive rock bands such as A Perfect Circle, Tool and Pink Floyd, and metal giants like Metallica, Korn and Pantera, the band was able to find a unique sound joining all these influences in their songwriting. Musically, Kandia create a raw, melodic, straightforward sound that delivers positive messages while not leaving the aggressiveness out of the music.

Kandia has released two full length albums thus far, both produced by Daniel Cardoso (Anathema), and one EP. At the end of 2019, once again partnered with Cardoso to begin writing a new album. In May 2020, they released the song "4 Walls" as a taste of what's to come. Now, with "Quaternary", the band is prepared to continue their sonic journey and spread their music to global audiences.

He has played alongside the likes of Jim Leverton, Graham Walker, Mick Weaver, Pete Wingfield, Nigel Olsson, Rick Wills and many more celebrated names.

Then there's his five-year membership of Procol Harum, prior to that Mick's own band Cochise - and push the time button further, '60s popsters Plastic Penny.

Over the years, Mick and friends, when not performing with their respective bands, got together in studios the length and breadth of England, laying down covers of favorites as well as getting new songs nailed.

With the quality of performers making up this illustrious roster, the outcomes are impressive. And now they are being released for the first time.

'Original Paint' sums up the ethos of this dip into the Mick Grabham archive: the real thing, unadulterated, unadorned, 14 tracks brimming with the kind of playing that only comes from professionals, used to working together, tight and fast.

Reaching as far back as 1972, this terrific release from Singsong Music charts Mick's 'downtime' from a super-heavy schedule or recording and performing, counter-balancing fresh interpretations of the hits of Bo Diddley, Holland and Dozier and Elvis Presley, instrumental John Barry along with self-penned compositions.

Beriedir's second full-length "AQVA" features ten tracks of progressive, power, and melodic death metal that were mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni (Domination Studio).
"AQVA", despite not being a real concept album with a story articulating itself throughout the tracks, touches its various topics through the many forms in which water manifests, be it a river, a storm or tears. The album deals with rather introspective matters, trying to give a new perspective on situations that Biriedir thinks their listeners will find relatable and hoping that they will maybe take shelter in their audio experience, using them as their own voice when only music can speak for us.

"We think AQVA will positively surprise our older fans and lead new ones, this record is much more diverse and has definitely matured in songwriting. The main goal of AQVA as a whole is to figuratively "submerge" the listener with a spectrum of themes, both musical and lyrical, related to water and its shapes. Water is the element of flow, it's the substance that conceals, preserves, and washes all away. The lulling nature of a silent shore or a rapping rain is juxtaposed to the fearsome imagery of the undertow, riptides, and tidal waves. We tried to convey these atavistic sensations differently from track to track. The singles were chosen to showcase the variety of approaches to this theme." adds band founder Stefano Nusperli.

Swampwater's 1970 debut stands alongside Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Guilded Palace of Sin, Poco's debut, the Everly Brothers' Roots and Bradley's Barn as one of the best country-rock records ever.

Founder, Gib Guilbeau had a strong Bakersfield resume prior to forming Swampwater. Guilbeau and Gene Parsons had released a few early country-rock singles in the late 60's as well as an album which eventually saw light of day in 1970 (although recorded in 1968-). The two recruited Clarence White in 1968 to record the legendary Nashville West album. This album has a good live feel and is highlighted by some of Clarence White's best playing which was always breathtaking and revolutionary.

Eventually Swampwater formed and started out as Linda Ronstadt's backing group in the late 60's. Eric White, Clarence's brother was also in the band and prior to forming Swampwater had been in the excellent Kentucky Colonels. Swampwater made two distinct albums in the early 70's without Linda Ronstadt's involvement. The above album was different than many notable country rock acts of the time for adding cajun and swamprock elements. The album opens and closes with two certified country-rock classics, Louisiana Woman and Big Bayou. Guilbeau had recorded the classy Louisiana Woman with both Nashville West and on his 1970 album with Parsons, though the version heard on Swampwater is the best. Big Bayou is a hard rocking, white hot country song with pretty fiddle that has been covered by many popular artists inlcuding Rod Stewart. Other songs like the acoustic flavored Man From New Orleans are highlighted by beautiful harmonies and a tear in your beer ambience.

Swampwater's musicianship is high caliber and Guilbeau's lyrics are always first-rate and thoughtful. Great songs like Kathleen, Desperation's Back Again (supposedly an Everly Brothers homage with great down and out lyrics) and River People are beautifully arranged and display superior craftsmanship. It's really a wall of greatness, with each song just as good as the next.

Swampwater mastered all the rural styles from cajun to folk-rock but just never received the breaks they so justly deserved. Their members were slugging it out in bars playing this sort of music years before anyone else had thought to do so. This album is a masterpiece and recommended to any true country fan.

AUA's second album, "The Damaged Organ", explores in depth the concept of alienation. While the duo's songs approach this topic with introspection ('I am a stranger to body') as well as a sociological perspective ('I am alien to this world'), to a certain extent the album is also a story of a search for identity: 'Who am I and how do I fit into this world?' Musically, this is reflected in a space that seems more boundless than AUA's 2020 debut, "I Don't Want It Darker". New possibilities open up. There is more at stake.

All the more astonishing that this multifaceted work was once again recorded in DIY fashion. Before production started, Fabian Bremer and Henrik Eichmann went hunting for strange and unusual electronic instruments, seeking inspiration and new sounds which would expand upon AUA's already eclectic mix of explosive Motorik beats, Carpenter-esque arpeggios, and surf guitars.

Throughout "The Damaged Organ" Bremer and Eichmann play virtually every instrument while taking turns on vocals. "Islands Song" also features Annika Henderson (Anika, Exploded View), whose voice adds a unique element to the otherworldly nature of the track, the modulating synthetic melodies of which bring Mort Garson's "Plantasia" to mind.

Bat Out of Hell is the 1977 debut album by American rock singer Meat Loaf and composer Jim Steinman. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album was developed from a musical, Neverland, a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan, which Steinman wrote for a workshop in 1974. It was recorded during 1975-1976 at various studios, including Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, produced by Todd Rundgren, and released in October 1977 by Cleveland International/Epic Records. Earthless release their forthcoming new album Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons, January via Nuclear Blast.

The San Diego psych rock trio's sixth studio album is compiled of just two songs, but each are of monstrous length - the title track weighs in at 41 minutes while the second, Death To The Red Sun, is half the length, but still comes in at a giant 20 minutes long.

Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons, otherwise referred to as Hyakki Yagyo, depicts an ancient Japanese legend in which a throng of demons, ghosts and other spine-chilling paranormal creatures descend on sleeping villages at night, once a year. According to one tale, anyone who witnesses this supernatural procession will perish instantly or be abducted. To avoid being taken away by the otherworldly beings, villagers hide in their homes.

Bassist Mike Eginton - who was also responsible for creating the album artwork - explains, "My son and I came across the Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons in a book of traditional Japanese ghost stories. I like the idea of people hiding and being able to hear the madness but not see it. It's the fear of the unknown."

Begin 2020 bracht het Finse metalmonster Lordi de fictieve verzamelaar Killection uit, met daarop songs in diverse stijlen uit de rijke rock- en metalhistorie: van glam tot prog, van disco tot thrash. Deze plaat zou een weergave zijn van Lordi door de jaren heen. Het is een grap, want Lordi bestond nog niet in de jaren zeventig. Maar wat als Lordi al decennialang successingles schrijft? Met dat idee, de muziek van Killection, en de extra tijd die de coronaellende Mr. Lordi gaf, ging hij aan de slag met het schrijven van meer materiaal in stijlen waarvan Lordi zich normaliter niet bedient. Het resultaat is de boxset Lordiversity. Het zijn zeven albums met elk een eigen karakter. Elk van die platen past in een periode uit de muziekgeschiedenis. Het geluid is onmiskenbaar Lordi, maar verschilt dusdanig van de gebruikelijke shockrock en -metal dat het uniek klinkt. Het idee is in ieder geval bijzonder origineel.

Met de geweldige titel Abusement Park blijft Lordi op dit hoofdstuk uit de Lordiversity-boxset dicht bij huis. De band bedient zich van glam-, sleaze- en hardrock in de stijl van onder meer W.A.S.P. en Twisted Sister. Geen onbekende invloeden wanneer je vaker naar Lordi luistert. Het is dan ook zeker geen onontgonnen gebied voor het kwintet. Helaas is het juist dit album dat wat tegenvalt. De periode waarop de Finnen hier teruggrijpen staat niet bekend om zijn virtuoze muzikale escapades. De doorgaans rechttoe-rechtaan songs hebben vaak weinig om het lijf met eenvoudige melodieen, dito instrumentatie en flauwe teksten. Lordi vergroot dat uit, waardoor ook de negatieve kanten van deze stijlen sterker naar voren komen.

British Progressive Rock Luminaries JETHRO TULL release the group's first studio album of new material in over 18 years!

A record that began to take shape as early as 2017, 'The Zealot Gene', in many ways, seeks to defy convention during a time when the business of being a touring and recording artist has never faced more uncertainties.

Tull bandleader Ian Anderson holds no reservations about the role for which the mythos and themes of Biblical storytelling played in the lyrical content of the new album, saying "While I have a spot of genuine fondness for the pomp and fairytale story-telling of the Holy Book, I still feel the need to question and draw sometimes unholy parallels from the text. Amoth is a melodic progressive heavy metal band from Helsinki, Finland. Their third studio album "The Hour Of The Wolf" is a huge leap forward compared to their previous recordings "Revenge" (2016), "Crossing Over" (2011), "Wounded Faith (EP) (2008).

"This is by far our best album yet! Superior performances from all of the musicians. Much better production and songwriting. It's not a fast-food album. Some of the songs are quite complex so it takes probably more than one listen to really get into!" comments Amoth guitarist and main songwriter Tomi Ihanamäki.

Amoth's roots are strongly founded on 80's heavy metal, but branch out in different directions with elements from progressive rock, thrash, and even jazz brought to the table.
The new album features Pekka Montin of Ensiferum once again as the lead vocalist and for the first time, there are also keyboards on an Amoth recording. Fans can expect insane vocals and virtuoso-like playing from all members of the band. The nine songs are very diverse, taking sudden twists and turns into unexplored territory. Amoth even offers up two Steve Vai / Joe Satriani-style instrumentals on this new full-length with tracks "Wind Serenade Part I" and "Wind Serenade Part II".

Amoth's new album "The Hour of The Wolf" is recommended for fans of Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Testament, Megadeth, Joe Satriani.

Freaks and Clowns is a Swedish quintet, two full-lengths into their five-year career. While undoubtedly power metal in Christer Wahlgren's vibrato-laden trills, expect little Rhapsody of Fire sword-flashing here. Injected with a healthy dose of AC/DC-esque hard rock and aptly energetic Gothenburg riffing with an Avatar clown theme to boot, tracks range from glam-themed arena-rock anthems to take-no-prisoners beatdowns of riffy goodness. Ultimately a mixed bag with little originality to be found, third release We Set the World on Fire rides Occam's razor like a Harley with some of the best riffs of the year's start, with some of the blandest songwriting to kick it off.

As the well-versed sons of the late, great musician/producer Jim Dickinson, guitarist Luther and drummer Cody Dickinson have become guardians of hill country blues and American roots music. Their particular genius is in continually finding new ways to explore these traditions. Their 2013 set World Boogie is Coming, titled after one of their father's more famous expressions (and he had more than a few!), was built around field recordings of north Mississippi legends Othar Turner and R.L. Burnside; in 2019 they released Up and Rolling, inspired by photos of area musicians from a lost roll of film taken by Wyatt McSpadden. For Set Sail the brothers, along with bassist Jesse Williams, have befriended another second-generation musician, singer Lamar Williams Jr.-son of the Allman Brothers bassist (no relation to Jesse). According to Luther Dickinson, being sons of famous musicians was their bonding connection: "I believe music is a form of communion with our loved ones and conjuring this vibe with members of musical families can be inspirational. We never had to figure out what it means and takes to be a musician."

The primeval voodoo rhythms that are in the brother's DNA drive "Rabbit Foot" where Williams sings, "Don't spell my name on a stone/ Give me an unmarked grave and a box of bones/ When my spirits free to roam." "See the Moon," an upbeat, '70s-inspired funk groove is a welcome new flavor with Sharisse Norman joining Williams on vocals. The history-conscious brothers bring in 82-year-old Stax veteran William Bell to convincingly sing "Never Want to Be Kissed," his ode to a final kiss with a dying lost love. In general though, this is not one of the brothers' more distinguished collections of originals. While the playing is tight, Williams is an uninspiring amateur, more of a talker than a singer with little range, and often lacking any emotion. "Juicy Juice" whose title screams funk, is set to an elastic '70s rhythm but is oddly low key and also handicapped by silly lyrics about a "classy city stoner chick" whose "juice is the truth." Williams flatlines in the slow "Bumpin'," sounding as if he's reading from a page. Few of the tunes are memorable, particularly closer "Authentic," a righteous plea for sanity and respect; with lyrics about "guns in the streets" it's is an overly simplistic message song with Williams' sing-talking over a weak musical foundation: "On the American tree of music roots/ Each branch bears a different fruit/ Music runs in the blood of our family in/ Music and love is what I believe." This rare misstep from Cody and Luther is missing their usual confidence and ferocity, perhaps the evidence that urban-leaning funk is one subgenre the talented duo just does not feel. © Robert Baird/Qobuz

Jim Steinman parted ways with Meat Loaf sometime after their improbable 1993 blockbuster Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell. He contributed a couple of songs to its 1995 sequel, Welcome to the Neighborhood, but by the time Meat Loaf was ready to do a third installment of Bat Out of Hell, Steinman opted out for unspecified reasons, leaving the singer to use five previously released Steinman songs as produced by Desmond Child -- a satisfactory compromise that at the very least illustrated how Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" should've been on a Bat Out of Hell album. Through a series of circumstances, Meat Loaf and Steinman wound up reuniting for 2016's Braver Than We Are, which was produced by Paul Crook, just like its 2012 predecessor Hell in a Handbasket. While the record bears some slick modern hallmarks, it is very much a throwback, evoking memories of Todd Rundgren's overblown Springsteen parody of 1977 as well as the earnest re-creation of 1993. Steinman's songs are suitably theatrical -- the opening "Who Needs the Young" feels like it's a Broadway reject -- and while he slyly winks at his past with "Going All the Way Is Just the Start (A Song in 6 Movements)," a song that features a cameo from "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" singer Ellen Foley, he also seems unaware that Ratt also got to the title "Loving You Is a Dirty Job" in 1990 (albiet after Steinman whose composition first appeared as a Bonnie Tyler single in 1985). That isolation is ultimately a benefit because Braver Than We Are feels caught between nostalgia and indifference, an album so old-fashioned it seems happily ignorant of modernity even when it threads EDM rhythms and metallic guitars into "More." The other way it's possible to tell this album was released in 2016 is Meat Loaf's performance. Thin and sometimes breathless, he's no longer the colossus of the '70s, but the diminishment of his range humanizes him and adds a bittersweet tinge to this reunion. Through Meat Loaf's voice alone, mortality becomes evident and it makes this third reunion with Steinman all the sweeter. Braver Than We Are may have its flaws -- it's too staid and self-conscious, for one -- but Steinman never found a better interpreter for his songs than Meat Loaf, and Meat Loaf never sounds more like himself than he does when singing Steinman, and that's why the album works.

If 2019's 'The Nothing' marked a reinvention of Korn's age-old sound, then 'Requiem' is their evolution. Doubling down on their expansive electronic influence and pop sensibilities while remaining faithful to their nu-metal past has paid off, creating a far-reaching and fertile landscape in which 'Requiem' occupies and blossoms within. The record pulses with sonic drop-outs, sharp screeches, lumbering riffs and a buzzcut delivery. Korn are anew, and 'Requiem' sees them fearless, no longer managing a balancing act with imprudent collaborators and instead embracing what made them famous to begin with. Impressively, their 14th studio album is teeming with riveting hooks: "I should've been good, I should've been down, I couldn't let go, what could I do?" in lead single 'Start The Healing', comes reinforced with coarse vocal layering and a thunderous sense of purpose. Unbound by time restraints and the typical intensity of recording, the band let the tracks develop naturally over a number of months, creating space for each to breathe and take on their own identity. 'Let The Dark Do The Rest' conjures up the pace and theatrics of a vivid slasher soundtrack, where Jonathan Davis' gravelly words fade inside each other among a bounding trawler of down-tuned groove filling the negative space. The outfit channel scratchy metalcore tropes on 'Lost In The Grandeur'; stark evidence that Korn have their finger firmly on the pulse. Following the lead of Limp Bizkit's late 2021 release 'STILL SUCKS' and coupling with the hype from a wave of newer, female-forward artists (Wargasm, Nova Twins, even Rina Sawayama), 'Requiem' appears in the midst of a transportive wave of nu-metal revivalism. 'Requiem' has the potential to introduce Korn's comprehensive mythology to new ears as they continue to pioneer experimentation in a sometimes stagnant scene.
