]"Queen" is the self-titled debut studio album by the British rock band Queen. Released on 13 July 1973 by EMI Records in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US, it was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre, London, with production by Roy Thomas Baker, John Anthony and the band members themselves.

The album was influenced by heavy metal and progressive rock. The lyrics are based on a variety of topics, including folklore ("My Fairy King") and religion ("Jesus"). Lead singer Freddie Mercury wrote five of the ten tracks, lead guitarist Brian May wrote four songs (including "Doing All Right", which he co-wrote with Tim Staffell while in the band Smile), and drummer Roger Taylor both wrote and sang "Modern Times Rock and Roll". The final song on the album is a short instrumental version of "Seven Seas of Rhye", the full version of which would appear on the band's second album, Queen II.

"Like any patchy but promising debut from a classic rock group, it's often easy to underrate Queen's eponymous 1973 debut, since it has no more than one well-known anthem and plays more like a collection of ideas than a cohesive album. But what ideas! Almost every one of Queen's signatures are already present, from Freddie Mercury's operatic harmonies to Brian May's rich, orchestral guitar overdubs and the suite-like structures of "Great King Rat." That rich, florid feel could be characterized as glam, but even in these early days that appellation didn't quite fit Queen, since they were at once too heavy and arty to be glam and -- ironically enough, considering their legendary excess -- they were hardly trashy enough to be glam. But that only speaks to the originality of Queen: they may have traded in mystical sword 'n' sorcerers themes like so many '70s prog bands, and they may have hit as hard as Led Zeppelin (and Jimmy Page's guitar army certainly was a forefather to May's overdubs), but they didn't sound like anybody else, they were too odd in their theatricality to be mistaken for another band. That much was apparent on this debut, but one thing was crucially missing: songs that could coalesce their sound and present it in a memorable fashion. There is an exception to that rule -- the wild, rampaging opener "Keep Yourself Alive," one of their very best songs -- but too often the album plays like a succession of ideas instead of succinct songs, and the group's predilection for suites only highlights this, despite the occasional blast of fury like "Modern Times Rock & Roll." This can be quite appealing as sheer, visceral sound and, in that regard, Queen is kind of irresistible. It showcases the band in all their ornate splendor yet it's strangely lean and hard, revealing just how good the band was in their early days as a hard rock band. That might not quite make it an overlooked gem -- it remains patchy on a song for song basis -- but it sure makes for an interesting debut that provides a rough road map to their later work." Norwegian melodic rock queen ISSA is back with her seventh studio album, "Lights Of Japan" on January 20, 2023.
A 'rebirth' of sorts, fans can expect to hear a revitalized and inspired artist who is evolving her sound, while also staying true to her roots. That being said, sonically, this latest album from ISSA lands somewhere between her revered debut album "Signs of Angels" and 2018's well received "Run With The Pack", which makes "Lights Of Japan" one of the talented singer's absolute best albums thus far.
As fans have come to expect with this absolutely fabulous vocalist, "Lights Of Japan" is a truly gorgeous slab of melodic rock majesty. Huge vocals? Check. Soaring, beautiful melodies? Check. Hooks galore? Check.
For "Lights Of Japan", Issa worked with producer Michele Guaitoli, who has produced albums by Visions Of Atlantis, Kalidia, SheWolf, and many more, and is also the vocalist for Visions Of Atlantis, Temperance, and ERA. Guaitoli also played guitars and bass on the album as well as contributing to the songwriting on two tracks. For the bulk of the album's songwriting, Issa's husband James Martin and his brother Tom, both former members of UK melodic rockers VEGA, contributed their immense talents.

Always curious to hear artists shape well-known genres to their own tastes, Finnish four-piece Leaflet infuse an American style modern hard rock sound with Scandinavian metal nuances on their second album Something Beyond. It's often a challenge to take influences from the past to remain relevant in an ever-evolving music market - these gentlemen sprinkle in guitar-driven material with the right soulful, passionate vocal melodies/harmonies that keep people moving along, taking the energy of the 80's/early 90's into the current century.

The electricity pulsating from the main chord progressions and complementary clean/aggressive transitions of Jaakko Leaflet and Antti Kallio sends immediate earworms to the brain on first exposure for "Earth" or the heads down, dirty rocker "Shades of Black". The steady rhythm section duties of bassist Fabian Korsström and drummer Pekka Jokela fill the foundation as steady as necessary - throwing down little fills or additional hooks to make "Gonna Do It" and the Alter Bridge-like "Someone Somewhere" intoxicating toe-tappers. Stronger background vocal support from the band allows for deeper chorus affiliations - traversing the sleaze/modern hard rock angles on the commercial-oriented "Resonate" while possessing a bit of that Scandinavian touch on the thoughtful, bouncy "Johnny Two-Face". The versatility of tracks is an ideal selling point, brought home by the magnetic voice of Jaakko as the main vocalist - he can be smooth or restrained as in the opening verse for "Alone-Alive" while executing a primal, psychedelic-driven aura on the already talked about "Shades of Black". Closer "Something Beyond" could be a difference maker - the cultural, Celtic-oriented harmonies plus acoustic to electric riffs possess a bit of that Finnish melancholy like latter period Sentenced, Jaakko giving his all in engaging melodies while the lead breaks set ears to stun mode.

Together at this point for a decade, Leaflet may seem on the surface to be a very basic heavy/hard rock-oriented band - yet Something Beyond has that extra depth of multi-generational appeal through dynamic compositions, solid focus, and that alluring vocal harmony component. A hidden gem waiting for more consumers to join the brigade.

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the signing of an incredible new trio, Heroes And Monsters. Formed by three rock 'n' roll lifers and friends: bassist/vocalist Todd Kerns, guitarist Stef Burns and drummer Will Hunt. The players' resumes speak for themselves, but rest assured, if you are looking for hard hitting, hooky, in-yer-face rock 'n' roll, then Heroes And Monsters will be good for what ails you. The band approaches its style with influences in tow, but also with an understanding and appreciation of the current rock scene. A best of both worlds scenario, if you will.
Todd Kerns is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer. He is most noted for being the bass player and back-up singer in Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators and for being the frontman of gold record selling Canadian band The Age Of Electric. In recent years he has been making his mark as a singer-songwriter with sold-out solo performances as well as fronting former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick's band as well as his own Canadian supergroup, Toque.
Guitarist Stef Burns has a fantastic and varied history in rock music. He has spent time playing with pop acts like Sheila E, Berlin and Huey Lewis & The News as well as rock acts like Y&T, with whom he recorded four albums, and Alice Cooper, playing on the albums "Hey Stoopid" and "The Last Temptation". Stef currently plays with Italian rock superstar Vasco Rossi and also has his own band, The Stef Burns League.
Drummer Will Hunt currently resides in the drum throne for Evanescence, with whom he started playing in 2007, and has performed and written on their last three studio albums, including their most recent release, "The Bitter Truth", which debuted at #1 on 27 different countries' album charts. Over the years, the in-demand skinsman has performed with Dark New Day, Skrape, Staind, Vasco Rossi, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Slaughter and more. He has also appeared on albums by Black Label Society, Michael Sweet (Stryper), Crossfade, Dirty Shirley (George Lynch), Device (David Draiman of Disturbed) and more.

UK hard rock stalwarts TEN used the downtime during the worldwide pandemic to work on not one, but two new albums. The first album to be released, Here Be Monsters, landed on February 18, 2022 via Frontiers Music Srl. And now, the label is to release the second album of the two, Something Wicked This Way Comes on January .

Following the success of the recent string of albums, from Albion to Illuminati, Hughes was joined once again by guitarists Dann Rosingana and Steve Grocott along with bass player Steve McKenna, keyboard maestro Darrel Treece-Birch and guest drummer Markus Kullman (Sinner, Glenn Hughes, Voodoo Circle) for the recording of Something Wicked This Way Comes. Ten continue to raise the musical bar higher for themselves, a goal they push on every release. Stunning guitar work, rich keyboards, excellent bass and drum interplay along with Hughes' rich vocals are the order of the day here, as they were on this album's immediate predecessor, Here Be Monsters.

Something Wicked This Way Comes was produced by Gary Hughes and mixed and mastered by Dennis Ward. Ten's longstanding professional association with Dennis has been ongoing since he mixed their 2011 album, Stormwarning and has always guaranteed albums with stunning sound and production.

Fans should note that there are no ties between Something Wicked This Way Comes and Here Be Monsters or anything of this nature. The band simply crafted two high quality releases and decided to put them out separately, in a fashion not too dissimilar to what happened with their amazing first two records which were recorded one after the other in a very short period of time.

As part of his lifelong tour dusting off chunks of the past, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys has made a second album with his excellent side band The Arcs-following up 2015's Yours, Dreamily with another "neo-psychedelic soul-rock odyssey." (Though it comes after the death of drummer Richard Swift from complications of chronic alcoholism in 2018, Electrophonic Chronic was primarily recorded beforehand so that Swift is, gloriously, all over the record.) The Arcs tend to get pigeonholed as "garage rock" (that catchall for much of Auerbach's personal work), but there is so, so much more to this. Call it heresy, but it must be said that the spaced-out soul of "Heaven Is a Place" is almost Prince-like, with red-hot guitar and Auerbach hitting some deliciously nasty "oohs." "Rollin' through the clouds/ Lean back in my dove white Cadillac/ Just cruisin' slow/ Heaven is a place I know where all the lovers go," he sings. He plays old-school crooner on "Eyez," with its slow-cruising rollercoaster of bass and synth. "River" is David Ruffin-esque and layers on shimmering, tentative Hammond B3-courtesy of Leon Michels-for a dose of drama; "A Man Will Do Wrong" is Miracles-smooth with its Motown romance and harmonies. Reeking of woozy B3 and a hit of flute, "Backstage Mess" evokes doo-wop's shuffle-and-shoop. Detroit is not the only reference, as you can hear plenty of Memphis Stax soul-that extra-heart wrenching, drunk on the blues style-on "Only One for Me." Punched up by spritely glockenspiel, it's a lonely-boy love song with a twist: "I got a feeling I'm the only one for me." After all, Auerbach sings, "No one's ever made me feel much better/ Stay with me through all the stormy weather." "Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore," meanwhile, loops in haunted mellotron for its pragmatic plea for peace in the wake of a break-up: "We should take care of one another/ Not destroy each other . What are we fighting for?/ Love doesn't live here anymore." Bright and '70s laid-back "Sunshine" lives up to its name thanks to a childish "sha la la" bridge and punch-drunk horns that will crack open your heart. Offering an intriguing left turn, "Behind the Eyes" mixes vintage soul and an almost The Band shamble, proving that soulfulness is all over the place. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Grammy-winning guitar superstar Steve Vai throws down a biker rock experience and pays tribute to a fallen friend on his new record Vai / Gash.

The album features the legendary guitar genius doing the most unexpected-for-him thing possible: playing straight-ahead, 70s-style hard rock with big riffs, driving beats, and vocal hooks. Vai is one of the most technically proficient guitarists to emerge in the 20th Century and his original music is normally full of complex harmony, astounding chops, and an otherworldly sense of melody.

Vai ditches it all on these tracks, which were intended to be heard at highway speeds. "This record was written and recorded in somewhat of a stream of consciousness in 1991 within perhaps a 2-week period as an answer to my desire to have a particular kind of music to listen to when I was riding my Harley-Davidson motorcycle with my friends," said Vai. "It's reminiscent of a certain type of rock music I enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970's. These recordings sat on the shelf for over 30 years and are being released now in 2023."

With roots going back five years, Arctic Rain began as collaboration of songwriter/keyboardist Pete Alpenborg, guitarist Magnus Berglund, and singer Tobias Jonsson, all veterans of the Swedish music scene. Picked up by Frontiers Music on the strength of demos, Arctic Rain debuted with their album, The One in 2020. Three years on, Alpenborg has left the band to be replaced by Kaspar Dahlqvist with Richard Tonyson add as their new drummer. Arctic Rain drops their sophomore album, Unity, this month, again with Frontiers Music.

Simply, Arctic Rain aspires to give listeners essential and classic melodic hard rock ala the Eighties yet timeless. Their sound, as before, is driven by the core elements of strong and harmonious riffage, epic guitar solos, steady rock groove from the rhythm section, and memorable refrains. Jonsson continues to have a strong vocal presence, perhaps singing more assertive across this album than in the past. Of course, these things are wrapped in song melody and vocal harmony which give the songs some AOR respectability. Perhaps, again, to some ears, there may be a current of metal edge found in some songs.

]Ronnie Romero release of 'Raised On Metal Radio', a companion album of sorts to his first covers album, "Raised On Radio", on January , 2023. This time out, Romero pays tribute to legendary artists from the metal world like Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Metallica, and more. Special guests on the album include Gus G. (Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne), Chris Caffery (Savatage, Spirits Of Fire), Roland Grapow (Masterplan, Helloween), and more.

Romero's voice and prolific musical activity have brought him to the forefront of the hard rock/metal scene where he can be seen/heard with Lords of Black, The Ferrymen, Sunstorm, Rainbow, and the Michael Schenker Group. Through his work fronting these acts, it is no stretch to see how the artists covered on this album have influenced Romero and understand how his voice is well suited to give them a proper tribute.

Ambitious and driven as always, this record is another special treat for fans while Romero continues work on his proper debut solo album of original material.
Romero's first solo covers album, "Raised On Radio", featured covers of classics that meant something special to Romero over the years and helped forge this talented singer's musical style. Songs by legendary acts like Survivor, Bad Company, Foreigner, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and more were given Romero's talented vocal treatment. These classic rock and AOR covers showcased a different side of Romero's musical influences and were executed with passion, charisma, and power. Now, with this second installment of covers, "Raised On Metal Radio", Romero showcases his love of metal music, for which he is more widely known.

Through Romero's career thus far, he has performed killer renditions of several rock and metal classics as part of his shows fronting legendary acts like Rainbow and the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He's also covered classic songs by Journey, Queen, Rainbow, and more with Spanish metallers Lords Of Black. So, with trying his hand at covers by legendary artists being familiar territory already, both cover albums were waters that Romero was comfortable wading into.
