PJ Harvey release a new box set collecting music from her back catalog. B-Sides, Demos, & Rarities i due out November (via UMe/Island). The release will be available in 6xLP, 3xCD, and digital formats, and includes 59 songs spanning Harvey's three-decade career. The box set features previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of pre-existing songs, and other material that has been previously unavailable in physical formats or on streaming services.

The box set was mastered by Jason Mitchell in collaboration with John Parish, who worked as a producer on PJ Harvey albums including To Bring You My Love, White Chalk, and Let England Shake, among others. It also includes rare archival photos, with art direction from Maria Mochnacz and Rob Crane.

PJ Harvey's ninth studio album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, was released in 2016. Earlier this year, she released a collection of demos recorded during the making of her celebrated 2011 album Let England Shake, and has a new reissue of The Hope Six Demolition Project due out in March 2023. UMe and Island will also release new vinyl reissues of every album in the PJ Harvey catalog, as well as her two albums with John Parish.

Core members, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker had been creating music together since 1967 after randomly meeting at a cafe. They would spend the next few years performing and writing songs for other artists, including 'I Mean To Shine,' for Barbra Streisand. One of their early incarnations included Chevy Chase on drums (yes, the comedic actor from the 'Vacation films). Producer, Gary Katz, who had hired the duo to do the writing for other artists, decided one day that their compositions were too complex for other artists to record, and so suggested getting a band together and recording themselves. They assembled a band, including the great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitar later a member of The Doobie Brothers). Also brought in was vocalist, David Palmer, as Fagen suffered from stage fright and often would be unable to perform his songs live.

The result was this, their debut record, a collection of some of the best Jazz/Rock songs. Really well written and performed by an incredibly tight band. Fagen would handle solo vocal duties on 4 of the tracks and share vocals with Palmer on 3 of them, while Palmer took the lead on 2 tracks. Drummer, Jim Hodder sang on 'Midnight Cruiser.' Two of Fagen's four songs were the singles, 'Do It Again' and 'Reelin' In The Years,' the later starting off (and continues throughout) with a ripping solo by session player, Elliot Randall, and in fact, was rated by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page as his favourite guitar solo of all time. That's quite an endorsement. The song peaked at #11 on the Billboard Charts. 'Do It Again' charted at #6, making it their second highest chart for a single. 'Dirty Work,' another great song from the record features Palmer. The album is tight, with some of the best musicianship money can buy. A great collection of easy-listening songs. It's a real treat to listen to Walter Becker's piano playing, especially on 'Fire In The Hole,' and his interplay with the guitarists

37 years ago today (June 1st, 1985) that Sting released his first solo album apart from the Police. Although the collection was originally conceived as just one of the three separate solo projects he, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland embarked on following the global success of the band's Grammy Award-Winning 1983 Synchronicity album and its subsequent world tour, which stretched into 1984; barring one reunion track the following year for their greatest hits compilation, The Dream Of The Blue Turtles marked the end of the Police and the official start of Sting's solo career.

Lenny Kravitz's greatest gift is that he's a master synthesist, pulling together different sounds and styles from eras past to create a sound that isn't necessarily blazingly original, but fresh due to his craft and sheer mastery of the studio. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. Even if Circus and 5 were sunk by their own bloat, they still had good singles, as did those early albums, so the 2000 collection Greatest Hits is a terrific encapsulation of Kravitz at the peak of his talents. Certainly, there are some fan favorites missing, and the non-chronological sequencing is maddening (two of his three worst singles are within the first three songs), but it does boast the magnificent new single "Again," along with such seminal Kravitz moments as "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Mr. Cabdriver," "Stand By My Woman," "Always on the Run," "Believe," "Let Love Rule," and "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," which is enough to make this a first-class greatest-hits compilation. After all, it doesn't just have all the main songs, it also illustrates that he indeed is a master synthesist.

Falling somewhere between the pop sensibilities of Ten Summoner's Tales and the searching ambition of The Soul Cages, Mercury Falling is one of Sting's tighter records, even if it fails to compel as much as his previous solo albums. Though he doesn't flaunt his jazz aspirations as he did in the mid-'80s, Mercury Falling feels more serious than The Dream of the Blue Turtles, primarily because of its reserved, high-class production and execution. Building from surprisingly simple, memorable melodies, Sting creates multi-layered, vaguely soul-influenced arrangements that carry all of the hallmarks of someone who has studied music, not lived it. Of course, there are many pleasures in the record -- for all of his pretensions, Sting remains an engaging melodicist, as well as a clever lyricist. There just happens to be a distinct lack of energy, stemming from the suffocating layers of synthesizers. Mercury Falling is a record of modest pleasures; it's just not an infectious, compulsive listen.

Zeke Sky is an American guitarist, pianist, vocalist and composer who has made continuous impact since videos of his playing and songs emerged on the internet in 2018.

Combining influences of psychedelic rock, progressive metal, heavy metal and world music, Zeke goes against the grain in writing and performing bold and visionary songs without limitation, dealing with complex lyric issues ranging from toxic love to kingly conquests.

In the same year, Zeke played his first live event opening for KING'S X as part of a home recorded album effort. Despite the total infancy of his name, an impressive number of copies were sold of this obscure album on the web.

Zeke followed up with a pair of singles in 2019 and 2020 with updated production ethics and of course more aggressive playing, and those saw favorable reviews all over the world, including in Rolling Stone Magazine ("ZEKE SKY is an incendiary of heavy metal.").

In 2021, Zeke completed a debut label effort, »Intergalactic Demon King,« released in 2022. For this young composer, the future is as bold as it is long, for only the brave who accept the challenge will taste the fruits of the golden mountain.

Since pivoting from bluegrass and renaming themselves after their four-times-great-grandfather-a cousin of Edgar Allen Poe-Rebecca and Megan Lovell have turned up the electric guitars and found their place in the blues rock/jam band world. What keeps them from being another Allman Brothers knockoff is talent. Both are accomplished multi-instrumentalists who have the added magic of sibling harmonies. Rebecca's songwriting continues to improve, and Megan's mastery of lap steel and resonator guitar gives their music an authenticity uncommon in the jam universe. Add to all that a quiet worship of the Black Keys whose infamous crash and bash theory of the blues has obviously rubbed off on the sisters. Here on their sixth full-length album, Larkin Poe work the blues rock groove hard, most impressively on the quiet and evocative closer, "Lips as Cold as Diamond." Recorded at Bell Tone Recording and The Lily Pad by Roger Alan Nichols and Tyler Bryant (who is married to Rebecca), the duo's loud-soft dynamics are fleshed out by, among others, bassist Tarka Layman, drummers Kevin McGowan and Caleb Crosby, and Bryant on programming and keyboards. Blood Harmony's opening track, "Deep Stays Down," begins with just lap steel, drums, and vocals before eventually bursting into what the Lovells are now: a full-blown rock act complete with roaring guitars and Rebecca in full wail. Her passion and grit fit alongside Grace Potter or Susan Tedeschi, and she's become expert at singing her lyrics' increasingly clever moments, as in the lead track, "The cat's in the bag/ The bag's in the river/ And the river runs deep/ And the deep stays down." In "Georgia Off My Mind," these Georgia natives eat a peach, drink a Coca-Cola and spin Ray Charles records before mournfully leaving for their new home in Nashville where, "I'm trading my sweet and lonesome pines/ For a rhinestone studded sky." They up the tempo for a rocked up "Kick the Blues" where Rebecca convincingly cries, "Gimme a shout, gimme a scream/ You gotta shovel the coal if you wanna make steam." The twin polarities upon which Use Your Illusion has always derived its unique energy from are its absolute bigness and its unparallelled sense of vindictive martyrdom. This deluxe set-which doubles the length of the combined two original albums by including two full live sets-is definitely big, but without the inclusion of additional studio tracks (no demos, b-sides or outtakes) doesn't expand on the original in any meaningful way. Which means that Illusion is still trapped in its own unique 1991 amber. From its odd sequencing-which alternates between melodramatic grandiosity, midtempo sleaze, and energetic rockers built solely on bitterness and spite-to the stultifying airlessness of the recording (all of the band members cut their parts separately), Illusion still feels like an overdetermined mess that somehow manages to consistently deliver the goods though sadly, goods steeped in an aimless rage that these days reads less like anti-authoritarianism and more like toxic narcissism. This is an album that gets out a "fuck you" in its first two minutes, and devolves from there into a master class on petty beefing: Whether it's "Right Next Door To Hell," "Get In the Ring," "My World" (ugh), "Back Off Bitch" (ugggghh), or any of the other tracks where poor Axl Rose blames all of his problems on everyone else in the world, the constant airing of tiny grievances is far more deadening than the set's length. All of this made Use Your Illusion a deeply cynical yet completely sincere work.

Although it's incredibly indulgent and self-centered, it's almost certainly an accurate representation of the band's perception of the world at the time. Its deep currents of misogyny were both casual and aggressive, but also completely unapologetic, which is both alarming and pathetic. Sounds like a terrible album, right? It most definitely is not. Weirdly conceived and recorded? For sure. Problematic? Yup. Highly individual and completely non-reproducible by any other band on Earth? Absolutely. Even now, some 30 years later, it still manages to yield treasures. Tracks that were overlooked in the overwhelming onslaught of the original release are well worth revisiting; the druggy blues-rock of "Bad Obsession, "Locomotive" with its sideways reworking of "Welcome to the Jungle," "The Garden" (which sounds like a leftover from the first Masters of Reality album with an Alice Cooper rap shoved in the bridge), or the Duff McKagan-penned Johnny Thunders tribute "So Fine" all hold up remarkably well.

The live shows are revelatory: The Use Your Illusion tour was as extravagant and overblown as the album(s) it was promoting, running for nine legs over 30 months with nearly 200 dates played. It was truly one of the last of its kind from an on-the-charts rock 'n' roll band, represented here by a warmup theater gig at the Ritz in New York in May, 1991, and an arena show on the UNLV campus as the tour was running at full speed eight months later. Remarkably, both sets exhibit a warm and generous band giving their absolute all to the fans in attendance, turning the somewhat clinical performances of Illusion's album versions into explosive renditions on stage. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz

Frontiers Music Srl release of the latest album from Enuff Z'Nuff, "Finer Than Sin". Now fronted by bass player and vocalist Chip Z'Nuff for the last three studio albums, including The Beatles' covers album "Enuff Z'Nuff's Hardrock Nite", the band is still delivering its patented power pop melded with hard rock tunes. Founding member Chip Z'Nuff is once again joined by long running members Tory Stoffregen (guitars), Tony Fennell (guitars) and Daniel Benjamin Hill (drums). "Finer Than Sin" showcases the musical stylings that have kept the band's loyal fanbase since the 80s, staying true to the rock 'n' roll roots. "Finer Than Sin'' is the band's 17th studio album overall. Originally formed in 1984 in Chicago, IL, the band received its big break in 1989 when they signed to Atco/Atlantic Records. Founding members, Chip Z'Nuff and Donnie Vie were joined by guitarist Derek Frigo and drummer Vikki Foxx and they commenced work on their major label debut. The self-titled album was a monster hit and spawned two evergreen singles, "New Thing" and "Fly High Michelle". Both received constant airplay on radio and heavy rotation on MTV, spending over 60 weeks in the Top 10. 1991 saw the band release their sophomore album, "Strength". The album had more of a hard rock overtone and sustained the success achieved on the first album. The band made high profile television and radio appearances on the likes of David Letterman and Howard Stern and were featured in Rolling Stone's Hot Issue as 'The Next Big Thing'. The band soldiered on during the new musical climates of the 90s and 00s and went on to release over a dozen more studio records.

Oak is a Norwegian progressive pop/rock band that originally emerged from a folk-rock duo. The four members have a diverse background spanning from classical piano to electronica, prog- and hard-rock, with references to the alternative scene as well as progressive rock - something that has combined to make a distinguished and unique sound.

OAK originated as a folk-rock duo, which expanded into today's lineup of Simen Valldal Johannessen on vocals, piano and keys, Øystein Sootholtet on bass, acoustic and electric guitars, Sigbjørn Reiakvam on drums, percussion, programming, keys and guitars, and Stephan Hvinden on lead, rhythm and slide guitars.


Musically, 'The Quiet Rebellion of Compromise' is the most dynamic Oak album so far, with a wide range of influences showing through. We're still in very familiar Oak territory, but with some sharper edges and some surprising twists and turns. After their previous album 'False Memory Archive', the band set out to write some shorter songs for a change - and ended up with their longest songs yet. As on their other albums, there are subtle hints to both past and future songs in the Oak universe.

For this album, the band decided to write about an important and touchy subject - Suicide and psychic health in general. Music as an art form can be very open for interpretation, so to be sure that the message comes across, they've asked for advice from experienced scholars on the subject. The font used on the album cover is partially made of handwriting from two real suicide notes, to underline the concept.

Black Hole's new album "Whirlwind of Mad Men" released November 11th via Rockshots Records. The full-length presents anthemic guitar riffs, powerful rhythms, frenzied solos, and enlightening vocals, to give fans a power metal quintet that's progressive, symphonic, and strongly influenced by masters of the genre such as Stratovarius, Kamelot, Powerwolf, Nightwish, and Iron Maiden.

Black Hole's sophomore full-length "Whirlwind of Mad Men" navigates between heavy and power metal with melodies carried between the vocals and guitar solos along with being supported by solid rhythmic parts and great orchestral pieces which give intensity to the compositions. The diversity of all the songs allows listeners to travel through various atmospheres and contexts. The album's goal is to give feelings of power while mastering strong emotional moments.

The new album also features new member Christophe (keyboards/orchestrations), adding more epic and orchestrated tracks. A collaboration that promises to be more interesting than their previous record "Lost World". Mixing and mastering were helmed by Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween, Masterplan) who also added a guitar solo on the album's cover track of Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark".

Use Your Illusion II is more serious and ambitious than I, but it's also considerably more pretentious. Featuring no less than four songs that run over six minutes, II is heavy on epics, whether it's the charging funk metal of "Locomotive," the antiwar "Civil War," or the multipart "Estranged." As if an attempt to balance the grandiose epics, the record is loaded with an extraordinary amount of filler. "14 Years" may have a lean, Stonesy rhythm, and Duff McKagan's Johnny Thunders homage, "So Fine," may be entertaining, but there's no forgiving the ridiculous "Get in the Ring," where Axl Rose threatens rock journalists by name because they gave him bad reviews; the misinterpretation of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"; another version of "Don't Cry"; and the bizarre closer, "My World," which probably captures Rose's instability as effectively as the tortured poetry of his epics. Crow's third and final release, Mosaic, was originally released in 1971. Largely unrecognized at the time, Mosaic contained one minor hit- "(Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The) King Of Rock And Roll," which easily beats the subsequent version by Long John Baldry. Mosaic also features a catchy original song that should've been a hit- "Keeps Me Running."

Like their prior albums, Crow's powerful organ-laden blues rock carries early '70s rock to new heights! Blending a new mixture of country and blues, with heavy steel pedal on "Watching Can Waste Up The Time," Mosaic was Crow's last effort to make it big before vocalist's David Wagner departed the group. Taking funky rhythms, lots of wah-wah guitar, and hard-edged vocals makes this album a must-hear!

Despite their lack of commercial success in the late '60s and early '70s, Crow proves themselves to be skilled songwriters and musicians. Their unique combination of blues and garage rock is sure to satisfy!

Frontiers Music Srl the signing of About Us, an exciting new melodic hard rock band hailing from Nagaland, India, and more specifically from a district in the state of Nagaland called Wokha ('Land of Plenty').

About Us first formed in the winter of 2019, with the members having spent the last 15 years or so in different bands and projects before coming together. Their collective musical taste runs the gamut from AOR, hard rock, metal, and more, with all of these varied influences reflected on their debut album.

The band released their first single "Loaded Love" in late December 2020 followed in April 2021 by their first music video, "Gimme Gimme". Van Halen was certainly the name on many people's lips in late 2020 and early 2021. Of course, this was mainly due to the unfortunate passing of legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen on October 6th, 2020. Now we're treated to a much more pleasing surprise with the release of his son Wolfgang's long-awaited first solo album. The term 'solo album' really takes on its full meaning here, as the recently turned thirty-year-old plays every instrumental part and has been composing the entire album completely alone since 2015. The only outside help came from producer Michael 'Elvis' Baskette (Alter Bridge, Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators) who took care of the impeccable sound design. But the main attraction of this album lies elsewhere: beyond the musical and vocal performance, it's the sense of melody that jumps out at you. Like Dave Grohl (a fitting comparison as both can be described as a one-man band), Wolfgang Van Halen hits the nail squarely on the head with strong songs that stick in your head after listening. Mammoth WVH turns almost every track into a potential single, impeccably sung and ready to sing along to all day long. Radio friendly? Absolutely. But these songs, with their lush vocal arrangements and spot on instrumentation, are far from shallow commercial tracks. Wolfgang has clearly understood the importance of avoiding simply following in his father's footsteps, hence why the (very accomplished) guitar solos only make occasional appearances. The multi-instrumentalist opts to explore other avenues. His experience in Tremonti has of course had a strong influence on his music, but there are many other components which may appeal to fans of alternative rock groups (in the American sense of the word) such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Sevendust and, of course, Foo Fighters. When the album flirts with hard rock, we can hear the influences of the likes of Alice In Chains or Winger's most recent productions. But, if we delve a little deeper and further back, the genetic lineage of the one-man band's music can be so clearly traced back to the "four boys in the wind" from Liverpool. The sense of how to make a hit, the sense of chorus and the perfect timing all reflect this strong Beatles influence. Mammoth was the very first name of the band Van Halen, chosen by Wolfgang for his project with the blessing of his illustrious father and the other members of the band. It's a nice tribute to his roots, but the even better tribute was starting his career with an album of this quality, made on his own, and free of any strong paternal influence. Wolfgang Van Halen owes his (predictable) success to his own talent alone and looks set to keep the mythical Van Halen name shining in his own way. The Smashing Pumpkins will never, ever tire of making grand statements. A couple of months ago, the band announced plans for their new 33-song opus ATUM: A Rock Opera In Three Acts. ATUM is the band's sequel to their previous epics, 1995's Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and 2000's Machina/The Machines Of God.

The full three-act opera is scheduled for release next April, but since the album exists in three acts, the Smashing Pumpkins are releasing it one piece at a time. They'd already shared the first single "Beguiled," but now the entire first act of the opera is out on streaming services. "Beguiled," it's worth noting, is not in that first act. Instead, the Pumpkins have just released 11 songs - 40 minutes of new music, which would be a full album's worth for most bands.

Given Neil Young's range and output, it's just as helpful to describe what World Record isn't before getting to what it is: It's not a previously unreleased studio album from the 1970s; an instrumental guitar album a la Le Noise or Arc; an Old Ways-style country album; a romantic stroll through Harvest Moon balladry; a Devo-inspired electronic rock album like Trans; or a mad-as-hell-not-gonna-take-it-anymore rager Ragged Glory.

World Record, though, is notably ragged in its own way. Sounding like the band borrowed a friend's two-car garage despite being recorded at co-producer (with Young) Rick Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, it's a stripped down, stubbornly direct missive to a world in which Young has spent nearly eighty years.

A hint of what's to come on his millionth studio album, in fact, arrives before he plays the first note. We hear a little studio chatter, drummer Ralph Molina counts off the beat and Young and Crazy Horse casually enter into a piano-driven mid-tempo song called "Love Earth." Sounding duct-taped together, the recording moves with a loping grace as Young opens with a couplet that's, well, pretty basic. "Love Earth/ And your love comes back to you/ Love Earth/ Such an easy thing to do!"

What follows is an exploration of the Youngian worldview as moderated by Rubin and featuring Molina, guitarist Nils Lofgren and bassist Billy Talbot: Songs and lyrics about old and new love, a fragile planet, dreams both hopeful and dying, the end of war, the toll of strife, blue skies, sparkling waters, the rising and falling of the sun and "roads we left behind." A 15-minute muffler-free song about the morality-and thrill-of driving a gas-guzzling old Chevrolet? You betcha.

This is the sound of Young doing Young-with the addition of the occasional pump organ and whatever multi-instrumentalist Lofgrin harnesses, be it lap steel, slide guitar, accordion or, on the glorious "The Wonder Won't Wait," what liner notes call "tap sweep percussion."

Though a relatively varied mix of Young bangers and weepers, World Record is united by its seemingly casual approach. Molina or Young count off many songs, an indication that the band was working live in a room and not swapping digital files.

One of the least precious records in his deep catalog, World Record seems to abhor sentimentality while embracing a screw-it-let's-let-loose ethos. The approach, however, does lead to an occiasional clunker. "Walkin' On The Road (To The Future)," opens with a telegraphed rhyme-"Walkin' on the road to the future is scary/ We want to make the best of the past and not tarry"-that could have been penned by a Neil Young AI song generator.

Enemy Eyes, a new melodic metal band fronted by vocalist Johnny Gioeli (Hardline, Axel Rudi Pell, Crush 40). Johnny is currently putting the finishing touches on Enemy Eyes' debut album. Of note, this will be Gioeli's 100th official release as a recording artist after decades of multi-platinum, gold and critically acclaimed albums. A true landmark recording in his discography and also the beginning of a new chapter. Johnny Gioeli first came to prominence with Hardline, a melodic rock band that he formed with his brother Joey and which famously featured Journey guitarist Neal Schon on the band's debut album "Double Eclipse". Johnny has continued to front Hardline since the release of the debut album in 1992, including the most recent release, 2021's "Heart, Mind And Soul". In addition to Hardline, Johnny has been fronting both German guitarist Axel Rudi Pell's solo band and Japanese-American band Crush 40 since 1998. He also released his first solo album "One Voice" in 2018.

Hailing from the Alpine area of France, Rising Steel arrives with their new studio album, Beyond The Gates Of Hell. Active now for nearly a decade, the band has delivered metal fans one EP and two full length albums, and then toured feverishly around the European theater. Their latest and third album features new and second guitarist Stephane Rabilloud who, some 20 years ago, did a stint with Nightmare, also from the same area of France.

Much like their previous recordings, Rising Steel offers metalheads a hybrid of traditional heavy, power, and thrash metal. Wherein they find influences from Priest to Maiden, Metallica and Saxon to Nevermore and Slayer. Their metal is driven by the power of twin guitar roaring and, often, punishing riffage, a hasty also bludgeoning rhythm section, ballistic guitar solos, and Emmanuelson's assertive vocals. He's a real screamer.
