For the release of their 8th studio album, released in 2011, Radiohead created a veritable controversy among their fans. The content of The King Of Limbs is difficult to access, syncopated, and sometimes a little heavy on the digestion. Often epileptic, the songs on this opus are rendered distinct by a strong rhythmic thread, woven into every song. Unlike the free-flying, and often warm, melodies on In Rainbows, The King Of Limbs prefers the coldness of the electric beat. But in the same vein as Amnesiac or Kid A, there's still a coherent whole to be deciphered through the confusing sounds. Once you listen to the record a couple of times the whole way through, it's impossible not to be impressed by at least the vision of the group, and their fearlessness in attempting to go beyond their almost sacred borders. Standout songs include but are not exlusively: Lotus Flower, Feral, Give Up The Ghost. As per usual with Radiohead, the record screams of classy production and abounding talent, filled with extra details that diehard fans and newcomers alike will lap up. Multi-platinum musician Jack Johnson releases a new studio album, Meet The Moonlight. Johnson's eighth studio album and first full-length release in five years, was produced by Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, Jim James) and recorded both in Los Angeles (at Sound City and EastWest) and The Mango Tree (Johnson's studio in Hawaii). The creation process marks a major artistic milestone from past work, taking shape from a one-on-one collaboration with Mills (whose contributions included everything from fretless guitar to Moog synth to steel drums) and unveiled an intimate and highly experimental process that involved embedding Johnson's elegantly stripped-back arrangements with enchanting sonic details.

"When Blake and I first got in touch we'd send each other playlists, and over time we realized we were drawn to music that sounds effortless despite all the effort put into making it," says Johnson. "After a while we got a language together and I gained a trust in him that allowed me to let go, push outside my comfort zone, and get to a sound I really loved."

Susan Tedeschi and husband Derek Trucks would like you to think that I Am The Moon maintains a coherent narrative that meaningfully wrestles with the most universal of life's questions across four albums. But while the entire project is based on the Sufi love story of Layla and Majnun, the second installment, Ascension, is in the end seven love songs that sway back and forth between the joys and the pain inherent in this most human of emotions. As in the opening volume Crescent, Tedeschi's voice proves to be the strongest force. Over the rocked up, organ-and-tambourine R&B of "Playing with My Emotions," she sings both the male and female parts, getting in several great lines like "He's flying home but he doesn't land" before trading electric guitar solos with Trucks. A bluesy bounce returns in "Ain't That Something" with Tedeschi's voice again being the glue that both leads and holds the tune together while Trucks' guitar lunges into a psychedelic-influenced solo in the background. Heartfelt and polished, this pair of opening numbers could easily fit on any Tedeschi Trucks record of the past. Winding charts for the group's horn section of Kebbi Williams (saxophone), Ephraim Owens (trumpet) and Elizabeth Lea (trombone) mark the 9-minute long "All the Love," supposedly a single unedited take. Authentic and true to its hallowed models, "So Long Savior" splits the difference between acoustic Delta blues and rousing gospel. Led by Trucks' slide guitar, which nods to the constant influence of his uncle's band The Allman Brothers, "Rainy Day" is the kind of pop-edged southern rock that Tedeschi Trucks have consistently had a talent for concocting. The country rock of "La Di Da," which closes each verse with "So we'll raise our glasses high/ To this bittersweet goodbye/ And we'll say farewell in the morning," has more than a whiff of Gram Parsons' "We'll Sweep Out the Ashes in Morning." While the seven-song Ascension is slightly stronger than the opening volume Crescent, thoughts of whether all of this might have been better as a double album inevitably creep in. This is a multimedia project, with the music meant to coexist with the short films, and how much that affects the way the songs sound as opposed to the look being played live is hard to say. Time takes its cues more from such bands as the Alan Parsons Project and Wings than from Jeff Lynne's fascination with Pepper-era Beatles. Sure, all the electronic whirrs and bleeps are present and accounted for, and Time did spawn hit singles in "Hold on Tight" and "Twilight," but on the average, ELO had begun to get too stuck on the same structure and content of their releases. "The Way Life's Meant to Be" echoes very early ELO hits like "Can't Get It Out of My Head," and the "Prologue" and "Epilogue" segments try and bring about a unifying concept that doesn't quite hold up upon listening all the way through. Time proves to be competent ELO but not great ELO.

Michael Schenker, the enigmatic 'Mad Axeman' celebrates his 50 years as a musician and 40 years on his own, with 'Immortal'.

This 10-track offering, on the Nuclear Blast Label, brings with it 14 musicians including the man himself. Ronnie Romero (Vocals), Ralf Scheepers (Vocals), Joe Lynn Turner (Vocals), Michael Voss ( Vocals), Barry Sparks (Bass). Steve Mann (Guitar,Keyboards), Bodo Schop (Drums), Simon Phillips (Drums), Brian Tichy (Drums), Gary Barden (Vocals), Robin McAuley (Vocals), Doogie White (Vocals), Derek Sherinian (Keyboards).

Many such as vocalist Gary Barden sharing the stage with him since 1980 and others such as vocalist Ronnie Romero a matter of just a couple of years.

The album opens with 'Drilled to Kill', first single released from it, with Primal Fear's Ralf Scheepers taking the mic. It is a tough out and out heavy rock song in the style of Judas Priest with a keyboard and guitar duel at the close. 'Don't Die On Me Now' follows with vocalist Joe Lynn Turner, this showcases Schenker's classic sound with great melodic guitar work throughout.

Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy's last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy's heavy, dual-guitar attack. Black Rose also turned out to be the band's most musically varied, accomplished, and successful studio album, reaching number two on the U.K. album chart upon release. Lizzy leader Phil Lynott is again equipped with a fine set of originals, which the rest of the band shines on -- the percussion-driven opener "Do Anything You Want To," the pop hit "Waiting for an Alibi," and a gentle song for Lynott's newly born daughter, "Sarah." Not all the material is as upbeat, such as the funky "S&M," as well two grim tales of street life and substance abuse -- "Toughest Street in Town" and "Got to Give It Up" (the latter sadly prophetic for Lynott). Black Rose closes with the epic seven-minute title track, which includes an amazing, complex guitar solo by Moore that incorporates Celtic themes against a hard rock accompaniment. Black Rose: A Rock Legend is one of the '70s lost rock classics.

Live Around the World, Queen's first live album with Adam Lambert on vocals, was recorded over the course of the group's many world tours between 2014 and 2020. It presents the perfect opportunity to discover - or rediscover - the "Lambert phenomenon" live. At just 29 years old, he dared to walk in the footsteps of one of the greatest singers and showmen we've ever seen: Freddie Mercury. It can't have been easy trying to choose the tracks for this album but the skilful mix of unavoidable hits and rarer tracks means that it avoids falling into the trap of simply being a best of live album. Better yet, Roger Taylor, Brian May and Adam Lambert go so far as to pay tribute to Mercury by including two tracks from his solo repertoire (the moving song Love Kills - The Ballad and I Was Born to Love You). Probably stemming from the fact that Mercury's voice is completely individual, Lambert stays faithful to the Queen sound but never tries to copy him. It soon becomes clear judging from the songs here (Somebody To Love is a good example) that few people could have risen to the challenge - and done it so well. Among the record's many highlights, the brilliant version of cult favourite Under Pressure stands out, with the original Mercury/Bowie duo being replaced by Lambert and Taylor. There's also a heavy version of Now I'm Here - a track that proves that 70-year-olds still know how to bring out the big guns (check out the severely underestimated drummer Roger Taylor!). It's a given that Queen and Lambert won't write any new material. They're focusing on bringing their huge musical heritage to the stage, so we should appreciate these songs without expecting anything else. The first official release of Queen's 1975 Christmas Eve concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon, A Night at the Odeon finds the legendary British rock outfit performing less than a month after the release of its landmark fourth album, A Night at the Opera. One of the major classic rock recordings of the '70s, A Night at the Opera is perhaps best remembered for being the Queen album with "Bohemian Rhapsody," a fact that helped the record debut at number one in the U.K. and number four in the States. When Queen took the stage at the Hammersmith on Christmas Eve 1975, they were already over 20 dates deep into their tour in support of the album. In fact, they had played the Hammersmith a few weeks previously and just returned from a four-night stint in Scotland. Audibly limber and primed for the show, Queen open the concert by ripping into a swaggering version of "Now I'm Here," and proceed to deliver a relentlessly exuberant set of songs culled fairly evenly from their discography to that point. Included are such Queen concert favorites as "Brighton Rock," "Keep Yourself Alive," and "In the Lap of the Gods." What is most illuminating here is the aggressiveness with which Queen play live. In contrast to their meticulously intricate and sometimes delicate multi-layered studio arrangements on Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, and A Night at the Opera, Queen are raw, loose, and propulsive here. It's invigorating to hear them kick out "The March of the Black Queen," smartly inserted into a medley bookended by "Bohemian Rhapsody" and played with an aggressive, punk-like intensity. Vocally, Freddie Mercury -- the consummate live performer -- seems to pivot with the energy of the moment, choosing to avoid a few of the higher, more crystalline melody notes when it doesn't serve a given song's more bluesy live arrangement, such as on their rendition of "Killer Queen," coloring the song instead with a gritty but warm resonance that better fits the band's in-the-moment physicality. Together with Brian May's sizzling, ornamented guitar operatics, they transform cuts like "Seven Seas of Rhye" and "White Queen" into showstopping tidal waves of glitter-laden pomp. As live Queen albums go, A Night at the Odeon matches the archival 2014 release Live at the Rainbow '74 for raw rock intensity and charismatic stage derring-do from both May and Mercury. The concert has an epic flow and works as a thumbnail sketch of the band from its inception onward. This is classic '70s Queen, four slim longhaired gents in white pearlized satin bell-bottomed jumpsuits, performing with brute energy and swanlike grace; a band in complete control of its sound, able to bend any song or audience to its will.

Here Come the Aliens takes its title from a possible close encounter Kim Wilde had in her garden in 2009, but the campy cover art -- designed by her niece Scarlet -- suggest that the singer doesn't take herself too seriously, at least as far as extra-terrestrials go. Music is a different matter. Working once again with her brother Ricky -- he produced the whole thing and co-wrote the songs -- Wilde is cool and confident, creating a nice hybrid of arena rock and Euro-pop filtered through just a slight prism of New Wave nostalgia. She provides enough callbacks to her pulsating neon salad days to pull in punters, but she and her brother fight against retro signifiers, choosing to operate thoroughly in the present. Some of her lyrics may be a bit stridently modern -- the titles of "Kandy Krush" and "Cyber Nation War" say it all -- but Wilde kicks up some very appealing glam ("A Different Story") and heartfelt bubblegum ("Pop Don't Stop") that makes this record a welcome surprise: It not only holds true to Wilde's roots, it deepens them.
