An even slicker record than Manifesto, Flesh + Blood precariously balances between alluringly seductive, sophisticated soul-pop and cloying, radio-ready disco-pop. At its best, the album is effortlessly suave and charming -- "Over You" is one of their greatest singles, and "Oh Yeah" is nearly as persuasive -- but much of the record is devoted to ill-formed, stylish lounge-pop. In particular, the reliance on reworked covers of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Eight Miles High" is distressing, not only because it signals a lack of imagination, but also because it suggests that Flesh + Blood is simply a lesser solo effort from Bryan Ferry. And even the handful of undeniably strong moments can't erase the feeling that Roxy Music were beginning to run out of ideas.

Brit rockers Thunder have release of their 14th studio album. Dopamine is the band's first double set.

'We didn't set out to make a double album," says guitarist Luke Morley. "But as the writing and recording process went on we wandered into some interesting areas and then it became a case of 'can we afford to leave any of this off?' In the end we did reduce it from 20 tunes to 16 but it wasn't an easy choice."

The title 'Dopamine' was inspired by the way people turned to social media during lockdown, seeking both solace and excitement from the affirmation provided by 'liked' pictures, posts and comments.

"I read a fascinating article by an American psychologist who said that social media forces us to become dopamine addicts," says Morley. "We're validated and liked on social media, which releases the dopamine - and so we get addicted to it. We take more and more selfies in the hope of more and more validation, and the album cover reflects this.

On their sixth album, Bloc Party sound as vital and vibrant as on 2005's Silent Alarm, back during the "indie sleaze" era. Their latest is also as fun and high energy as that influential debut; if this were a person, you'd be suspicious they'd had cosmetic work done. The band continues to find inspiration in New Wave and art-school punk as singer Kele Okereke's big personality-that London accent as distinct as ever-tries on different guises. You can feel the angst as he rushes the verses of "Day Drinker," its sharp, crisp drums egging on the adrenaline release. Excellent single "Traps" layers edgy, nervous guitar and shotgun drums as the singer walks the line between louche and letch: "Cute like Bambi/ But you're headed to a trap ... I wanna be your education/ I wanna be your contact high." Okereke gets playful on the otherwise ominous "Callum is a Snake," decorated with hissing and a shout of "SNAKE!" at the end. Sometimes it means dipping into unexpected pockets. There's an early '80s giddiness, à la Fun Boy Three or Altered Images, to "You Should Know the Truth," complete with sunny guitar, group backing vocals and exaggerated sighs. And the whole band leans into the high-drama theatricality of ABC on "Sex Magik"-remembering a teenage summer fling that made a deep impression, with Okereke intoning "Earth-earth, air-air, fire-fire, water-water" like a hypnotic mantra-and "Of Things Yet to Come." That one drips with rococo flourishes from Okereke and guitarist Russell Lissack (they remain the only original members). "The Girls are Fighting," meanwhile, adopts a soccer-chant vibe and screeching metal guitar solo to tell the story of a bar brawl: "It's a riot at Inferno's/ The filth are on their way ... The bouncer's made a movie/ Upload it to WorldStar (Scrag fight!)." "By Any Means Necessary" is funky and slinky, and irresistible "If We Get Caught" sports confident show-off snare and an angelic chorus. For jazzy-bass closer "The Peace Offering," Okereke goes deep-truly, he expands his vocal range-and dives into a spoken-word, beatnik hep-cat mood. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has released the Portals EP - his debut solo release.

The instrumental four-song offering marks the first time a core member of Metallica has pursued a solo project while remaining in the band. Hammett recently told Rolling Stone that he was "shocked" he got the band's blessing to release the EP, alluding to the conflict that partially led to the exit of former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted.

Hammett even worked with personnel close to the Metallica camp, including Edwin Outwater - the conductor of the S&M2 concerts - and veteran producer Bob Rock. That said, the music on Portals is a far cry from the thrash metal of Hammett's full-time gig.
Hammett indulges his prog and classic tendencies on the four songs. He also draws from a vast well of guitar riffs, some that sound like unused Metallica licks. From the cinematic sweep of "High Plains Drifter" to the Euro power metal overtones of "The Incantation," Kirk essentially ignores genre convention, crafting a compact and varied debut release.

Sydney alt-pop artist Charlie Collins has released the follow-up to her AIR Award-winning (and ARIA-nominated) debut album 'Snowpine'

Collins began writing for the album more than two years ago "in the wake of her separation", and eventually scrapped the first completed version of it as she "began to rediscover her wildness, spontaneity and freedom". Collins herself says that 'Undone' will "expose a lot of who I am and what I was going through [in that process]".

The album saw Collins experimenting with co-writes for the first time, linking up with local songwriter Xavier Dunn (Jack River, GRAACE, Sarah Wolfe), Japanese Wallpaper and Jarryd James. All three also aided Collins in producing the record, with the artist also enlisting Scott Horscroft (Middle Kids, Polish Club) and Joji Malani (ex-Gang Of Youths) to produce additional tracks.

On her ninth studio album, Lambert plays around with rock 'n' roll and blues, but it's also so country. "I'm out in the Mojave, call me Ricky, call me Bobby," she dares on the muscular "Actin' Up," like a modern-day Jerry Reed. "Call me hotter than wasabi/ Cause I'm actin' up." Three of these songs were first heard on The Marfa Tapes, her acoustic, raw-to-the-bone 2021 collaboration with singer-songwriters Jon Randall and Jack Ingram. "In His Arms" gets a richer, rounder studio treatment, and "Waxahachie" is filled out with cool '80s guitar. "Geraldene" is even more of a hoot, alive with juke-joint fire and Keith Richards-style guitar. Outlaw fun in the tradition of Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough," it finds Lambert confidently stuttering the title as she delivers devastating couplets: "I could see you coming all the way from Amarillo/ Truck stop red lips pullin' on some nicotine/ Shining like the spoke on a brand new El Dorado/ You're trailer park pretty, but you're never gonna be Jolene." The singer also pulls out an unexpected, faithful cover of Mick Jagger's "Wandering Spirit," turning the rockabilly flair up to 11. "Strange" is an instant classic vibrant with Fleetwood Mac vibes, while "Country Money" has a cool '70s AOR feel-complete with Joe Walsh-esque guitar-and a winking storyline about getting rich without getting fancy: "Connie Johnson got a farm in Wisconsin and a diesel in the drive . and the best beef in the cheese state, baby"; "Carol Jean, she's the chicken-egg queen ... drives her hens around town in a Coupe de Ville." There's a Gene Autry lope to "If I Was a Cowboy," along with a modern-day attitude: "So mamas, if your daughters grow up to be cowboys, so what?" "Carousel" is an acoustic stunner with a tender music-box melody and a storyline full of rich symbolism-about "pretty Elena," who has a secret past life, her heart having been broken by a big-top man. "She walked the high wire back in the '80s . hanging from the top tent rafters 'til the spotlight disappeared. The way he earned her trust was on a 20-foot trapeze/ She fell so hard because he always let her fly/ 'Til he left her heart suspended in a cotton-candy sky." And "Music City Queen" might not hold up for a future "Best Of" record, but it's fun right now. Swirling in swamp-blues guitar, it features the B-52's on backing vocals-including Fred Schneider doing a kitsch call-and-response-and witty lines (about a river boat!) like "She's had the same red carpet since '79 and she was 'ah, ah, stayin' alive.'" Jade Warrior's first album following Tony Duhig and Jon Field's emergence out of the psychedelic July captures them abandoning the best of that band's whimsical moodiness in favor of a symphonic spirituality epitomized from the outset by the soaring guitars that ecstatically slice through the opening "Traveller." Reminiscent, in places, of a less-precious successor to Quintessence and the Incredible String Band in that moods and esotericism do sometimes get the better of the band's more conventional music impulses, Jade Warrior is nevertheless a remarkable album, all the more so since its makers could readily have given the likes of Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues some serious competition in the mellifluous prog stakes. Glyn Havard's vocals themselves can sound extraordinarily Ian Anderson-ish in places, with Field's wielding of the flute and some distinctly edgy tempos only furthering that impression. Elsewhere, however, the same tools combine to induce emotions that range from trance to terror, an accomplishment that means highlights of the album are difficult to single out. Although the ten tracks are clearly delineated, the song titles are little more than passing impressions of the music's own sensations, rendering Jade Warrior one of those rare albums that is best experienced as a seamless whole.

Twelve tracks originally recorded in 2010 to 2014 as part of the Close Up series of acoustic reimaginings of Suzanne's favorite songs. Never before released!

Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world's best-known venues.

Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who "observes the world with a clinically poetic eye" (The New York Times), Vega's songs have tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, her work is immediately recognizable - as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago.

Back in 2010, Suzanne began re-recording and releasing songs from her extensive back catalog as the "Close-Up" Series. She thought that her fans might like to hear the songs of her past stripped of their original productions, to hear them in an intimate setting, something more personal, that felt like she was singing to them alone. During the recording process for these four albums, Suzanne also decided to rearrange the songs by theme, so people could rediscover them out of their original contexts.

If someone had said it to him ten years ago, Jack would have laughed. A forced laugh too, no doubt. The lonesome boy of blues, confined to analog, converts to a synthetic album for the first time in his career. Foreseeing the last few years with his collaborations, this flurry in the middle of his solo breakthrough remains surprising. Next to the blues riffs, White, at the age of 42, creates his first melange of music on this new crusade. And this composition, put together at the beginning of 2018, is living proof of this new path blazed by White. Splashes of rock (Respect Commander), turbulent jam sessions (Ice Station Zebra), congas and percussion for broken Afro-Cuban rhythms on digital projections (Over and Over and Over, Everything's you've ever Learned), soaring gospel on organs with the McCrary Sisters of Nashville (Connected by Love), country caressed on the piano (What's done is done), interlude chamber music with CW Stoneking (Abulia and Akrusia), vocoders for miniature funk (Get In The Mind Shaft), Al Capone's words written during his time at Alcatraz on Dvořák's Humoresque in a jazz style, everything goes.

For this leap into the unknown, the former member of The Stripes made sure to let loose. Not giving a damn. Taking a lot of risks along the way. First he isolated himself for several months in a studio rented in Nashville, outside the well-built walls of Third Man Records, to first write without any backing instruments, in order to feel the keys of his synths, all while recording on tape. Then, he locked himself up in New York and Los Angeles with Carla Azar from Autolux, Louis Cato, Justin Poree and Bobby Allende as well as some of the musicians who play for Kendrick Lamar and who make some of the best hip-hop around. All musicians who he had never worked with before. Speaking on the experience, White said; "Some of those songs could take up an entire side of an album, like a Miles Davis record or a Funkadelic record. Then someone would do something and another mood would change the room." Always playing outside his comfort zone, White, who likes to capture the rawness of a live sound, dirty and still throbbing, born in sweat, chose LA to rework the recordings after letting them cool off for some time. Dog & Butterfly became Heart's fourth million-selling album and placed two songs of opposing styles in the Top 40. Like their Magazine album, Dog & Butterfly peaked at number 17 on the charts, but the material from it is much stronger from every standpoint, with Anne and Nancy Wilson involving themselves to a greater extent. The light, afternoon feel of the title track peaked at number 34, while the more resounding punch of "Straight On" went all the way to number 15 as the album's first single. With keyboard player Howard Leese making his presence felt, and the vocals and guitar work sounding fuller and more focused, the band seems to be rather comfortable once again. Average bridge-and-chorus efforts like "Cook with Fire" and "High Time" aren't spectacular, but they do emit some appeal as far as filler is concerned, while "Lighter Touch" may be the best of the uncharted material

20 years ago, on February 26, 2002, a hard-to-categorize album by an unknown 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and pianist was released with modest expectations. Released by the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, it wasn't a jazz album, nor did it resemble anything else on the pop landscape of 2002. Now, 20 years later, Norah decided to release the Allaire version of the album. "It's been a bit like time traveling to some alternate universe of the album that nobody ever heard," she says. "When I approached Craig to tell him about it, he suggested we ask Tony Maserati to 'balance' the recordings. This brought my vocal to the front more and I can finally hear my little 22-year-old self trying new things and fitting into the music around me just fine. Re-visiting these sessions after listening to them only once in the last 20 years has been a lovely surprise. I'm so glad to finally re-unite with Craig and get a chance to finish what we started together. I learned a lot from him, and I always think of that time upstate as a sort of dreamy fantasy, and I still get that feeling when I listen to these recordings."

Formed in 1970, Jade Warrior were one of the most original British bands to emerge during the Progressive Rock era. The first incarnation of Jade Warrior featured Tony Duhig (guitars) and Jon Field (flutes, percussion), both of whom had been in the Psychedelic group July, and Glyn Havard (bass, vocals).

Signing to the legendary Vertigo label, the band recorded their self-titled debut album in March 1971. A remarkable work, 'Jade Warrior' would be the template upon which the band would build their unique sound - venturing stylistically between ethnic music, melodic, gentle ethereal and ambient sounds and heavier guitar driven rock.

By the time of the recording of this, their third album, in 1972, the band had expanded to a quartet with drummer Allan Price adding a new character to the band's sound. 'Last Autumn's Dream' was arguably the most fully realised album by Jade Warrior during their tenure with Vertigo Records, featuring such classic tracks as 'A Winter's Tale', 'Snake', 'Dark River' and 'Borne On The Solar Wind'.

In the 1980s and '90s, numerous women recorded blistering rock, but things were quite different in 1976 -- when female singers tended to be pigeonholed as soft rockers and singer/songwriters and were encouraged to take after Carly Simon, Melissa Manchester, or Joni Mitchell rather than Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. Greatly influenced by Zep, Heart did its part to help open doors for ladies of loudness with the excellent Dreamboat Annie. Aggressive yet melodic rockers like "Sing Child," "White Lightning & Wine," and the rock radio staples "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" led to the tag "the female Led Zeppelin." And in fact, Robert Plant did have a strong influence on Ann Wilson. But those numbers and caressing, folk-ish ballads like "How Deep It Goes" and the title song also make it clear that the Nancy and Ann Wilson had their own identity and vision early on.

Many of the late-'70s big name rock bands experienced a dip in popularity in the early-'80s. Usually it was attributed to musical departures that the band's core fan base wasn't willing to accept, and although Heart didn't stray far from their hard rockin' direction with 1982's PRIVATE AUDITION, it was the group's first release to not reach gold-certification status in the United States. However, Ann Wilson's vocal pipes were still some of the best in the business, as evidenced by such standouts as the rocking album opener "City's Burning," the piano-based title track, and the ballad "Angels." While not as focused as past releases such as DREAMBOAT ANNIE or LITTLE QUEEN, Heart fans should definitely check out the underrated PRIVATE AUDITION.

"Get Off" spearheads a whole new, exciting - and long awaited - chapter in the story of Motor Sister. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Jim Wilson (Mother Superior), guitarist Scott Ian (Anthrax), bassist Joey Vera (Armored Saint), drummer John Tempesta (White Zombie, The Cult) and vocalist Pearl Aday (Pearl), Motor Sister was originally formed as a Mother Superior covers band made up of diehard fans - and aided by sharing the same frontman - playing the songs for the love of doing so, making their debut at Ian's private 50th birthday party. Catching the attention of Metal Blade, the label offered to put out a record and the result was Ride (2015), a collection of live-in-the-studio takes cherry-picked from Mother Superior's back catalogue. Now, they step beyond those parameters, returning with their second album, which is almost entirely brand new material. "The record of covers was already done, so there was no need to do it again," says Aday. "We're a bunch of songwriters with so much passion for the same kind of music, it just makes sense that we would make new music together, and it was easy as usual to follow Jim's lead on this one. He was overflowing with songs and ideas so we all happily jumped right in." Adds Wilson, "We definitely wanted to continue with the spirit of my old band and it's not difficult really because everything Mother Superior did was done with heart and soul and I think soul is an important word. Not necessarily 'soul music' but the feeling that comes with it."

Frontiers is pleased to present Black Eye, a new musical project centered around the vocal talents of David Readman (Pink Cream 69).

Musically, the driving principle behind Black Eye was to craft a melodic metal album with big choruses, powerful rhythms, and huge solos that would support the powerful voice of Readman, a world class singer. The band's name is a reference to the Black Eye Galaxy (also known as the Devil's Eye Galaxy), a spiral galaxy with a pinwheel shape that is visible in the constellation of Coma Berenices and is well known among amateur astronomers as it is clearly visible even with small telescopes.

The concept for Black Eye came together when Serafino Perugino, President and Head of A&R for Frontiers Records, came up with the idea to pair Readman and producer/guitarist/songwriter Aldo Lonobile together to craft a melodic metal album built upon the foundation of Readman's powerful voice. Produced by Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Archon Angel, Sweet Oblivion), who also plays guitar on the album, Black Eye is comprised of guitarist Luca Princiotta (DORO), who also participated in the songwriting, drummer David Folchitto (ex- Fleshgod Apocalypse, Stormlord), and bassist Andrea Arcangeli (DGM). Additionally, Antonio Agate (arranger for many artists, including Secret Sphere, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Sweet Oblivion ft. Geoff Tate, and more) and Mattia Gosetti (Agarthic) provide keyboards and orchestra arrangements.

Readman has enjoyed a long-running career due to his impressive vocal talents. An English singer best known for being the vocalist of hard rock band Pink Cream 69, who worked with Frontiers over the years on multiple releases, and former vocalist of progressive metal band Adagio. Additionally, Readman released a solo album in 2007 and was also part of German guitarist Alex Beyrodt's band Voodoo Circle, from 2008 to 2016, returning in 2020. In 2015, two projects featuring Readman on lead vocals were revealed. The first, Room Experience, was a melodic rock project led by Italian musician Gianluca Firmo and they released a self-titled album released in May 2015. The second, Almanac, was a new heavy metal band led by former Rage guitarist Victor Smolski. In September 2016, Readman reformed the David Readman Band, his solo band that he had founded in Germany some years back. Never one to rest on his laurels, in 2017, it was announced that Readman had joined New Wave of British Heavy Metal legends Tank. In October 2017, another new project came out called Pendulum of Fortune, featuring Readman with Bodo Schopf, Franky R., and Vladimir Shevjakov.

Fans of European melodic metal masters, like Masterplan and Edguy, and everyone who has celebrated Readman's voice over the years in his various endeavors will find much to be pleased with here!

Upstate NY band LIPS TURN BLUE releases its debut album "Lips Turn Blue", the last work of late Canadian singer Phil Naro. Naro was the frontman for Peter Criss Band for many years, but also melodic hard bands like D Drive, 24K, Talas, and worked with many Canadian acts like Lee Aaron.

Also in the band and long time Naro partner guitarist Don Mancuso will continue with LIPS TURN BLUE enlisting a new vocalist, but this debut deserved to be released with Naro's voice as it was written and recorded by him, completed before passing away in May 2021 from cancer.
This is classic melodic hard rock with an early Nineties feel, melodic, emotional, with a clean bright production and ver, very good songs. Legend Lou Gramm duets on one song with Naro

The debut album features a wide variety of musical styles and textures, all crafted around the powerhouse rhythms of LTB and the remarkable voice of Phil Naro. The album even contained a remake of Black Sheep's "Chain On Me," which was written by Mancuso and Lou Gramm, as well as a Mancuso/ Naro original, "A Little Outside," which features Foreigner's Lou Gramm on lead vocals and Naro on backing vocals.

Little Queen is Heart's third studio album originally released in 1977. It spent 41 weeks on chart and became a multi-platinum selling record. Little Queen features popular single "Barracuda" as well as "Kick It Out" and the title track.
After acquiring a substantial following with Dreamboat Annie, Heart solidified its niche in the hard rock and arena rock worlds with the equally impressive Little Queen. Once again, loud-and-proud, Led Zeppelin-influenced hard rock was the thing that brought Heart the most attention. But while "Barracuda" and "Kick It Out" are the type of sweaty rockers one thought of first when Heart's name was mentioned, hard rock by no means dominates this album. In fact, much of Little Queen consists of such folk-influenced, acoustic-oriented fare as "Treat Me Well" and "Cry to Me." Anyone doubting just how much Heart's ballads have changed over the years need only play "Dream of the Archer" next to a high-volume power ballad like "Wait for an Answer" from 1987's Bad Animals.

Released to herald a reunion of the band and superseding several out-of-print predecessors, The Best of Roxy Music is an excellent summary of the group's hits and album highlights between 1972 and 1982. There are really two editions of Roxy Music, the glam rock unit that achieved widespread U.K. success from 1972 to 1975, and the more polished one that was a broader international success from 1979 to 1982. The compilers have dealt with the dichotomy and the more lasting popularity of the later recordings by presenting the compilation in reverse chronological order, so that soft rock hits like "Over You" and "Dance Away," which scored in America, come before U.K.-only hits like "Street Life" and "Virginia Plain," which rock much harder. But all the major hits are here (only a couple of less-successful British singles chart entries are missing), augmented by memorable album tracks like "Do the Strand" and "Mother of Pearl." In print or not, this is the best single-disc collection of Roxy Music, since it is more complete than earlier compilations like the 1977 Greatest Hits and 1983 The Atlantic Years (1973-1980) LPs, and, unlike later best-ofs such as Street Life: 20 Great Hits (1986), The Ultimate Collection (1988), and More Than This: The Best of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music (1995) (the latter two U.K. releases), it is not divided between Bryan Ferry solo tracks and Roxy Music ones.
