Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward. While Black Stone Cherry have had increasing chart success -- 2014's Magic Mountain hit number five on the U.K. charts and number 22 in the U.S. -- the band felt a lack of creative control over their recordings. To that end, they left Roadrunner Records and signed to Mascot, run by Ron Burman (the man who signed them to Roadrunner in the first place). Earlier Black Stone Cherry albums were always imbalanced: songwriting was sometimes sacrificed in an attempt to replicate the band's live sound; at other times, it was the reverse. Kentucky is a self-produced, back-to-the-roots affair (with participation from a host of local players and singers). Opener "The Way of the Future" walks the line between gnarly, riff-tastic hard rock and heavy metal. Frontman/guitarist Chris Robertson's rant against greedy politicians is fueled by his and Ben Wells' twin-guitar attack, grooving tom-tom, kickdrum fills from John Fred Young, and a fuzzed-out, Geezer Butler-esque bassline from Jon Lawhon. The two proceeding tracks, "In Our Dreams" and "Shakin' My Cage," are equally bone-crunching. The gears shift on "Soul Machine." It blends greasy Southern-fried funk and adrenalin-fueled blues-rock, with Robertson backed by Stax-style vocalists Sandra and Tonya Dye. Black Stone Cherry can still write killer hooks, too: "Long Ride" is a power ballad in classic '70s rock fashion, complete with a rousing anthemic chorus and melodic guitar fills by Wells. The band updates Edwin Starr's psychedelic soul classic "War" with fat baritone saxophone, brass, dirty, in-the-red distorted guitars, and a large backing chorus. Robertson's vocal is filled with righteous indignation as the band swells toward volcanic eruption. The vintage Southern rock vibe on "Cheaper to Drink Alone" is classic BSC, but it's steeped in such a catchy melody, it will likely be covered by harder, edgier contemporary country acts. Wells' guitar break is one of his meatiest on record. "Hangman" is steeped in squalling, hard-riffing blues with a hooky chorus, while "Rescue Me," despite its brief gospelized intro, is the meanest, leanest thing on the set. The groove-centric intro of "Feelin' Fuzzy" gives way to a funky backbeat with guitars on stun. The latter album track "Darkest Secret" helps close the album circle with off-the-rails metallic hard rock (complete with a Black Sabbath-style breakdown), though the chorus is drenched in Southern groove. Kentucky marks the first time BSC have balanced all of their writing strengths with their concert presence. The album is a grower. After a listen or two, Black Stone Cherry's back-to-the-cradle approach proves that track for track, Kentucky is not only more consistent, but more satisfying than previous albums.

Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett, releases his new studio rock album Surrender of Silence on 10th September 2021, via Inside Out Music. The album features 11 new songs as Steve has been working hard through Lockdown and, for the first time, has completed two studio albums for release within the same year!

Hot on the heels of his classical-acoustic travelogue Under A Mediterranean Sky, which was released in January and hit Number 2 in the UK Classical Album Chart, Surrender of Silence is a further exploration of Hackett's love of world music, discovering different sounds, moods and textures to deliver a rock album of extraordinary variety, power and beauty.

Current The Dark Element (and ex-Nightwish) vocalist Anette Olzon to release her new solo album, "Strong" via Frontiers Music Srl on September 10, 2021.

This will be Anette's second solo album, following 2014's "Shine," and offers a harder, faster musical offering compared to the debut. More importantly, "Strong" stakes a claim for Anette's well-deserved standing as one of the world's top female metal vocalists.

The music for "Strong" was written, composed and produced together with acclaimed Swedish guitarist and producer Magnus Karlsson. Together, Anette and Magnus managed to create an outstanding collection of songs which showcase Anette's enormous vocal range alongside Karlsson's incendiary riffs. The songs are heavy, but still quite melodic and contemporary in their approach to the genre style. Additionally, "Strong" is mixed by Jacob Hansen (Pretty Maids, Volbeat, The Dark Element, etc.).

All in all, "Strong" is an album that masters the borders between heaviness and hookiness, all while showing an artist who doesn't rest on her laurels, but heads boldly into the future.

The numbers are astounding. 51 years together, 34 studio and 28 official live albums, 46 members including 10 drummers and 10 bass players and hundreds if not thousands of gigs (don't quote me on any of these figures). Best known for their driving/dad anthem 'Silver Machine', Hawkwind have never been frightened of hard work. Their last two releases Carnivorous a musical chronicle of the pandemic, which was released under the Hawkwind Light Orchestra tag and 50th Anniversary Live, both released in 2020, were warmly received by both fans and music press alike.

So, as they head into their second half century, in what state do we find Dave Brock and his cosmic band? The current line-up of founder Brock on Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards, Magnus Martin on Keyboards/Guitars, Richard Chadwick on Drums/Vocals, Niall Hone on Bass/Keyboards and now in his fourth stint with the Hawks, Tim Blake on Keyboards have only been together since 2019 (it's complicated) but the outfit have returned to the prolific output of their early days releasing six studio albums within the past five years and they continue to pull in the punters at concert halls and festival sites across the nation and beyond.

Somnia is released to coincide with the band's appearance at this year's Hawkfest in East Devon between 27th-29th August which will celebrates the anniversary of Hawkwind's first ever gig. Hawkfest also marks the bands post-pandemic return to the stage and is followed by a string of UK dates from September and culminates in an appearance the London Palladium on 28th October. Available on CD or 180gram Vinyl this album may just keep you up at night.

Brand-new 2021 remixed stereo versions by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh, who also remixed the deluxe editions of Script For A Jester's Tear and Clutching At Straws.

In March 1984, Marillion released their second studio album Fugazi, which went on to be certified Gold and reach number 5 in the UK albums charts. The classic album spawned two singles Assassing and Punch & Judy, both reaching #22 and #29 on the UK singles charts respectively.

Fugazi was the first Marillion album to feature Ian Mosley on drums and percussion, replacing Mick Pointer after the highly successful Script For A Jester's Tear. It also included Fish, Steve Rothery, Pete Trewavas and Mark Kelly.

In celebration of 30 years of "The Black Album", welcome the definitive re-release: Metallica (Remastered).

Metallica is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. Released on August 12, 1991, by Elektra Records, it is commonly referred to as The Black Album because of its packaging design. Its recording took place at One on One Studios in Los Angeles over an eight-month span that frequently found Metallica at odds with their new producer Bob Rock. The album marked a change in the band's music from the thrash metal style of their previous four albums to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound.

Metallica promoted Metallica with a series of tours. They also released five singles to promote the album: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad but True", all of which have been considered to be among the band's best-known songs. The song "Don't Tread on Me" was also issued to rock radio shortly after the album's release but did not receive a commercial single release.

The Metallica Blacklist celebrates the 30th anniversary and enduring influence of the iconic Black Album, with one of the most ambitious projects ever conceived by the Metallica team: An unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Album song. All profits from The Metallica Blacklist will be split evenly between the All Within My Hands Foundation and 50+ charities chosen by the artists who play on the album. All music overseen by executive producer Giles Martin.

The tracks are arranged here in the same running order as the original album, so that means six versions of "Enter Sandman" fill The Metallica Blacklist's first half hour before a note of any other song appears. (Genre-shuffling pop singer Rina Sawayama has the most fun with the tune; costume-wearing Swedish rockers Ghost basically paint by numbers.) And credit brave Goodnight, Texas for tackling "Of Wolf and Man" by themselves and Rodrigo y Gabriela as the lone artists to take on "The Struggle Within."

"Some of these cover versions are tweaked to fit the artists' preferred styles of music. Others are downright faithful recreations of the original. (Would it surprise anyone to learn that Weezer chose sonic fidelity?) But some are thrilling reinventions, playing with the melodies and moods of the band's work to transform the piece into a vibrant new form. One thing's for sure: 53 cover versions of 12 songs is too damn many. So we sat down and went through each one in painstaking detail, in order to arrive at this: A version of The Metallica Blacklist that only features the best cover of each track, the better to provide an alternative iteration of Metallica.

UK rockers VEGA are back with "Anarchy and Unity," their seventh studio album overall and the culmination of a string of releases which started in 2009 with their debut album "Kiss of Life". "Anarchy And Unity", while not a departure from the band's defined and classy sound, shows a band determined, mature, and ready for the next step in their career. It has a crisp sound and immaculate musicianship showcasing the great talents in the band. On the songwriting front, the band have returned with a more muscular sound, but no less full to the brim with melodies that will grab you from the first note to the last.

"Anarchy and Unity" sees two new faces in the band, Billy Taylor (ex-Inglorious) on guitars and Pete Newdeck (Di'Anno)) on drums. They join singer Nick Workman, guitarist Marcus Thurston, and the brothers Martin, keyboardist James and bassist Tom.

It is positively spooky how consistently interesting Lindsey Buckingham's 30-year solo career has been. For a musician whose core creative philosophy seems rooted in the way art emerges from dramatic chaos, his own output-both within and without Fleetwood Mac-always manages to be immediately familiar and completely surprising. And although it's been ten years since his last proper solo album, his 2017 collaboration with Christine McVie (featuring Mick Fleetwood and John McVie) felt more like "Buckingham with guests" than the "Fleetwood Mac without Stevie Nicks" album the lineup suggested, as it leaned heavily on Buckingham's unique vocal and guitar phrasings. However, when confronted with a true Lindsey Buckingham solo effort-as in, "written, performed, and produced by"-it's abundantly clear just how differently he thinks when left to his own devices. For a man who turns 72 in October, 2021, and is among the most famous rock musicians alive, it's remarkable just how weird and fearless he still is. The tenor and textures here are uniquely his, as is the distinct approach to multi-tracked self-harmonies, drum machine programming, and slightly off-kilter layers of instrumentation that evoke a mood that somehow is both claustrophobic and exploratory. It's an "in-the-box" sound that's less rock-oriented than 2011's Seeds We Sow (Buckingham calls it "pop," but it most definitely is not, despite how catchy some of the tunes are here), and more aligned with the coke-sheen new wave he was making on Mirage and Law and Order in the early '80s. And while a cut like "Blind Love" blatantly revisits the drum pattern of "Trouble," Buckingham has reconfigured the approach into something stranger and much more introspective here. Frenetic harmonies and digidrum patterns on a track like "Swan Song" show an artist in anxious conversation with himself. Some may be a bit disappointed that there's not a tremendous amount of guitar here, but when it does show up, it's mightily impressive; Buckingham flexes his fingerpicking skills on the glitchy and melodic "I Don't Mind" and the, er, electric "Power Down," both brisk reminders of what an underrated and unique player he is. Of course, it's not the '80s anymore, and for an artist exiled from the band that made him famous and looking at his eighth decade on the planet, it's probably not surprising that the lyrics here can get a little melancholy. "On the Wrong Side" is an explicit exploration of old age, but in typical Buckingham fashion, it's a bit askew and maybe a little cynical, while the more direct and melancholy "Dancing," closes the album out on a somber note of poetic reflection. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz

In celebration of 30 years of "The Black Album", welcome the definitive re-release: Metallica (Remastered).

Metallica is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. Released on August 12, 1991, by Elektra Records, it is commonly referred to as The Black Album because of its packaging design. Its recording took place at One on One Studios in Los Angeles over an eight-month span that frequently found Metallica at odds with their new producer Bob Rock. The album marked a change in the band's music from the thrash metal style of their previous four albums to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound.

Metallica promoted Metallica with a series of tours. They also released five singles to promote the album: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad but True", all of which have been considered to be among the band's best-known songs. The song "Don't Tread on Me" was also issued to rock radio shortly after the album's release but did not receive a commercial single release.

More than 30 years after its release, OZZY OSBOURNE's sixth solo album-the Top 10 (#7) and quadruple platinum NO MORE TEARS celebrated with an expanded digital audio album due September 17 (Sony).

In its release, NO MORE TEARS yielded four top ten singles on the Billboard Rock Tracks chart, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" (#2), "Road To Nowhere" (#3), "Time After Time" (#6) and the title track (#10). In addition, the album's "I Don't Want to Change the World" earned OZZY his first Grammy for a live version of the track that was featured on his 1993 LIVE AND LOUD album. The Grammy-winning track was one of the album's four songs co-written with OZZY's longtime friend and colleague Lemmy Kilmister; the others include "Mama, I'm Coming Home," "Desire," and "Hellraiser." The album has remained an OZZY classic, earning a spot (#22) on Loudwire's "Top 90 Hard Rock + Metal Albums of the '90s" with Ultimate Classic Rock including No More Tears on their list "Top 100 '90s Rock Albums."

"Mama, I'm Coming Home," the album's biggest hit which OZZY co-wrote with Kilmister, started with Zakk at a piano, has gone on to become not only a rock anthem, but a classic song among soldiers.

Green Mars is the second album release from Viriditas. Like it's predecessor Green Mars is loosely based on the events of the book of the same name by author Kim Stanley Robinson.
The music portrays events and emotions drawn from the multitude of characters in the expansive and inspiring book, from the teenage runaway Nirgal on his journey of exploration and self discovery, to the scientist Sax Russel, a diminutive introvert quietly working out a way to thwart the plans of the blundering planetary government.

Original Soulmates compositions and collective improvisations on highest levels are just as much part of the concerts as world-renowned hits of the individual Soulmates members. DROTT is comprised of Arve Isdal (Enslaved), Ivar Thormods?ter (Ulver) and Matias Monsen and hails from Bergen in the west coast of Norway. With their varied musical background ranging from metal and jazz to classical music, they create the genre which can only be described as DROTT. Inspired by forces of nature, superstition and spirituality the trio explores light within darkness through their music.

The group, recently established (2020), released their self-titled EP in March 2021 and received great reviews. It established the Drott's instrumental Progressive Rock sound as a breath of fresh air in the genre! Their first full-length "Orcus" album takes Drott in a new creative and artistic direction. With 10 tracks they dive deeper into sonic, experimental landscapes.

First released in 1991, Lean Into It, is the second studio album by the American rock supergroup, of Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey - Mr. Big. This is the band's breakthrough release - Lean Into It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 charts, while the single 'To Be WIth You' became the band's first and only song to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up single, 'Just Take My Heart'. was a Top-20 hit, peaking at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In Absentia is the seventh studio album by Porcupine Tree, first released on 24 September 2002. The album marked several changes for the band, with it being the first with new drummer Gavin Harrison and the first to move into a more heavy metal and progressive metal direction, contrary to past albums' psychedelic and pop rock sounds.

While not a formal concept album, many of the songs still have common themes related to serial killers, youthful innocence gone wrong, and criticisms of the modern world. The album's title is also tied into this, with the phrase being Latin for "in absence" or "in one's absence", often in reference to a person's rights when mentally unable to be represented in court in legal situations. Wilson said of the title:

"It comes from. It's related to some of the lyrics. It's about people on the fringes, on the edges of humanity and society. I have an interest in serial killers, child molesters, and wife beaters. Not in what they did, but in the psychology of why. What caused them to become unhinged and twisted? Why are they unable to empathise? It's sort of a metaphor - there's something missing, a black hole, a cancer in their soul. It's an absence in the soul."

The remainder of the album prominently features a similarly brutal string of rockers: standouts include "Revenge Is Sweet," a paean to getting even that combines chugging guitar riffs with a stomping beat, and "Gimme What's Mine," a fierce declaration of dominance that layers Southern rock-styled riffs over a churning bassline. Despite this preponderance of hard rocking tunes, Expect No Mercy isn't just a guitar-fest. It also takes time to explore country-rock (there is an excellent, rocked-up cover of the country standard "Busted" as well as a honky tonk-style original called "Place in Your Heart") and even a little bit of funk (a hard-grooving slice of funk-rock fusion called "New York Broken Toy"). The album never takes the daring stylistic chance within the hard rock formula that distinguished Razamanaz or Hair of the Dog, but this is minor quibble in light of the album's high levels of consistency and quality. In short, Expect No Mercy is a treat for Nazareth fans and a solid listen for any hard rock fan who wants a good indication of the group's style.

Imagine the complex atmospheres of 'Pink Floyd' interspersed with the dramatic intensity of 'Magna Carter' wrapped with the medieval Celtic flavourings of 'Blackmores Knight' and you will have an understanding of the overall impact that 'Mostly Autumn' are able to generate with their lush musical deliverance. Certainly too with their latest offering "Graveyard Star" they embark upon a fairly complicated mixture of what could be described as popular musical theatre presented in the form of a series of miniature symphonies. But the collection of tunes on this album extend far more and beyond such a simple formula taking you at every junction on different unexpected routes. For example, what starts off as an up-tempo 60s bass guitar enterprise turns magically into a full-blown Celtic rock enterprise with beautifully executed female vocals and a full-blown sweeping fiddle dominating the lead instrumental role. The entire album is full of such surprises and is a preverbal mixing pot of musical snippets which suddenly come to the fore, exquisite slices of 'Pink Floyd' guitar and organ tucked in amongst powerful crescendos of female vocal deliveries.

Ronnie Atkins, vocalist of Horsens, Denmark-based hard rock / heavy metal band Pretty Maids, released five-song EP 4 More Shots (The Acoustics) through Frontiers Music Srl.

4 More Shots (The Acoustics) consists of one previously unreleased studio song, 'Carry Me Over', three acoustic versions of songs included on Ronnie Atkins' debut solo album One Shot, plus the track 'One Shot (Orchestra Version)'. The latter was previously only available as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album.

"Carry Me Over' was the first song I wrote after I was told my cancer had returned in March last year," said Atkins. "I had hit rock bottom mentally and emotionally and was in a hopeless, frustrating period. It's pretty obvious when you listen to the lyrics, which are melancholic but also very honest. However, when I had to decide which songs were going on my solo album, I deliberately decided to leave it off as I thought the lyrics were too sad and depressing and that's not what I wanted to signal to fans. However, I still think it's a beautiful melody!"

As to the current state of his health, Atkins added: "I'm in a different place, not diagnosis-wise, but I feel good and I guess I've somehow learned how to adapt to the situation and deal with it. Thanks to immunotherapy, a positive mindset, and, not the least of which, the almighty God, I'm still here."

'Carnegie Hall 1970', which was recorded on original analogue multitrack and mixed by The Volume Dealers: Neil Young and Niko Bolas, was made from the early show on December 4, 1970, and it was the first time Young ever performed at the New York venue.
Young performed two shows at Carnegie Hall, one on the 4th and another at midnight the next morning. Bootleggers were unable to capture this first show, which according to Young was "by far, a much superior show".
The show's setlist covers one of the most revered eras of Young's career, with stripped-down versions of 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere', 'Down By The River', 'Helpless' and 'Sugar Mountain', plus 'After The Goldrush' from the album of the same name, released only nine weeks prior to the Carnegie Hall show.

Young also performed the songs 'Bad Fog Of Loneliness', 'Old Man' and 'See The Sky About To Rain' before they were recorded and released.

KK's Priest - 'Sermons of the Sinner' - 10 new songs available on CD disc, single disc vinyl with bonus CD album, digital download and via streaming - is a musical statement that KK Downing's heavy metal ride is far from over after his extended hiatus. "The whole concept is the fact that I continue proudly to be who I am and what I am and do what I do," declares Downing. "It's been nearly 10 years. I'm back making music." Downing assembled former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens, Hostile guitarist A.J. Mills, Voodoo Six bassist Tony Newton, and DeathRiders/Cage drummer Sean Elg to create Sermons Of The Sinner.

Downing says the word "sinner" in the album title refers to his famous solo in that classic song of the same name, noting that fans are always hoping for new music to sound like the Judas Priest classics. KK's Priest's new material is most certainly an homage. They have unleashed an album with a modern sound that hearkens back to what fans have always loved about Downing and his music and which still sounds fresh. The high speed album opener "Hellfire Thunderbolt" offers a fictitious take on how metal arrived before the masses were ready for it. Rousing rockers like "Raise Your Fists" and "Wild And Free" revel in the passion and excess that metal fans embrace. The guitar interplay is intense and inspiring, and the band is firing on all cylinders.
