New Jersey-based rock n' roll trio THE ATOMIC BITCHWAX released new studio album, 'Scorpio', an August 28th via Tee Pee Records. The group, which originally formed in the mid-90s, consists of lead vocalist/bassist Chris Kosnik, drummer Bob Pantella, and guitarist Garrett Sweeny, all of whom are past or present members of the band Monster Magnet. Scorpio is the follow up to the group's 2017 full-length 'Force Field', and their eighth studio LP overall spanning more than two decades.

The new album follows Savoy Brown's critically acclaimed 2019 album, City Night. "The new album continues the approach I've been taking with the band this past decade," says guitarist/ singer/ songwriter Kim Simmonds, who formed the band in 1965 in London, England, and is one of the longest running Blues Rock bands in existence. "The big difference with the new album is the multi-layer approach I took to recording the guitar parts. It's all blues-based rock music. I try to find new and progressive ways to write and play the music I've loved since I was a young teenager."

Frontiers Music Srl released of Simon Collins new album, "Becoming Human". Simon Collins has been grappling with heady subjects while writing his new album. He can spend hours discussing astronomy, cosmology, and quantum physics. He loves a good conspiracy theory too, but the rollercoaster that we all face as we become human, is the focus of the album's theme. The album ultimately is a conversation about surrender, renewal, uplift, and mortality. Not surprisingly, the album is called Becoming Human.

"Becoming Human" is Simon's fourth solo release, following his debut "All of Who You Are" (2000), sophomore effort "Time For Truth" (2005), and his third album "U-Catastrophe" (2008). In 2010, Collins co-founded the critically acclaimed band Sound of Contact. Featuring Simon on lead vocals and drums, the rest of the band included keyboardist/co-producer Dave Kerzner, guitarist/bassist Kelly Nordstrom, and bassist/guitarist Matt Dorsey. The band received the Limelight Award (essentially "Best New Band") at the Progressive Music Awards in 2013. Their debut album, "Dimensionaut" ended up being the fastest selling debut album by any band in the 20 year history of Inside Out Music.

Swedish multi-instrumentalist Rikard Sjoblom has had an extremely productive past few years, whether it be working with English progressive rockers Big Big Train, or taking the lead with Gungfly and their new album 'Alone Together' saw Gungfly recording as a trio, with brothers and previous collaborators Petter and Rasmus Diamant on drums and bass respectively. "It was a lot of fun playing both keyboards and guitar because I had come up with a lot of nice parts but I knew early on that I wanted to make the album with the brothers on drums and bass - luckily they were very up for it!" This 'power-trio' have focussed on the rock this time, and you can hear that loud and clear: "I didn't want to smother the production with layers upon layers of keyboards and bells and whistles but instead tried to keep it prog rock with the focus on ROCK. I wanted every instrument to mean something in the mix." This is evident on tracks like 'Happy Somewhere In Between' and the 13-minute epic 'Traveler', where Gungfly have never hit harder

Sometimes the stars align and create a perfect balance of talent within a group. A band like Perfect Plan is the "perfect" (pun intended) example of that: a superb singer, a well-oiled band of experienced players, and a great songwriting talent with a knack for unforgettable melodies and driving rhythms. Add to that the right single released at the right time and Perfect Plan's emergence as immediate rising stars on the melodic rock scene is no surprise. After Anathema's 2012 award-winning album Weather Systems and 2014's spellbinding Distant Satellites, the ambient rockers are back with their eleventh full-length, The Optimist. Out now on Kscope, The Optimist reveals some of the darkest, most challenging and unexpected music the sextet have put their name to.
Anathema, led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and drummer/keyboardist Daniel Cardoso began recording The Optimist in the winter of 2016 at Attica Audio in Donegal, Ireland and then finished at Castle Of Doom studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals] at the helm. Vincent elaborates on Doogan's influence on the recording process "he suggested that we record as a live band, which we hadn't done for years. Having played a few tunes on the last tour, we were ready for that. Tony wanted to capture that energy you can only get with everyone facing each other. it makes a big difference. He was a superb guy to work with and I learned a lot making this record"
The idea for The Optimist was born from the front cover artwork of the band's 2001 album A Fine Day To Exit Daniel Cavanagh explains "I suppose you might say the album is semi-autobiographical because this time we used a surrogate," he says, of the character that is The Optimist "We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative of The Optimist. It was John's idea to write a narrative, so I took A Fine Day To Exit as the starting point". Vincent elaborates further on the earlier album's artwork influence "The guy who disappeared - you never knew what happened to him, did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego - the last known location of The Optimist - shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit.
To continue the theme further, the band brought back designer and illustrator Travis Smith to create the artwork for The Optimist. The artwork was created from a series of photographs Smith took on a West Coast road trip.
With the character's unresolved destiny the three song writing members, meticulously brought the unfinished story to an end - and most strikingly of all - one which is decided by the listener.

Originally formed in 2007 under the name of WITCH HAZEL by lead singer Nate Tyson and drummer Nicholas Zinn, WITCH HAZEL had three self-released albums to their credit, Forsaken Remedies (2012), Nocturnity (2015) and Otherwordly (2018). If you're a fan of Doom metal or Stoner rock, Dead Quiet's seven track album, Truth & Ruin, tears a rock-shaped hole in your soul and fills it with gutsy metallic riffs and melancholic rip-roaring vocals. While the band evoke a certain 70s timbre, for this listener comparisons can't help but be drawn to politically-charged ear-busters Rage Against The Machine.

At times singer/guitarist Kevin Keegan's vocals sound spookily akin to Rage's Zack de la Rocha, but the undulating, grinding riffs of all seven of DQ's anthems provide a bedrock of relentless, incandescent force throughout. Banger Partial Darkness is the hit, but if you want your ears to bleed, Cold Grey Death comes recommended.

Given the quirkiness of Neil Young's recording career, with its frequent cancellations of releases and last-minute rearrangements of material, it is a relief to report that this two-disc compilation is so conventional and so satisfying. A 35-track selection of the best of Young's work between 1966 and 1976, it includes songs performed by Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Stills-Young Band, as well as solo work. In addition to five unreleased songs, Decade offers such key tracks as the Springfield's "Mr. Soul," "Broken Arrow," and "I Am a Child"; "Sugar Mountain," a song that had appeared only as a single before; "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere; "Southern Man" and the title track from After the Gold Rush; and "Old Man" and the chart-topping "Heart of Gold" from Harvest. This is the material that built Young's reputation between 1966 and 1972, although he is more idiosyncratic with the later material, including the blockbusters "Like a Hurricane" and "Cortez the Killer" but mixing in more unreleased recordings as the set draws to a close. He seems intent on making the album a listenable one that will appeal to a broad base of fans, and he succeeds despite the exclusion of much of the harrowing work of 1973-1975. Nevertheless, the album is an ideal sampler for new listeners, and since there is no one-disc Young compilation covering any significant portion of his career, this lengthy chronicle is the place to start.

The fourth album from the Swedish quartet NIGHT, "High Tides-Distant Skies," released on September 11, 2020. The record is a departure (as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed and more Metal-minded "Raft Of The World"), in that the band has concentrated more on the writing process and putting the rhythms and melodies in the forefront. They have also developed a more Seventies era feel in their sound, dragging a litany of influences with them. Derek Sherinian is unquestionably one of the most significant keyboard players of the modern era. His far ranging talents have been much in evidence through the music of Alice Cooper, Dream Theater, Black Country Communion and current band Sons Of Apollo. Sherinian has also released a series of acclaimed solo albums over the last two decades.

The latest of these is 'The Phoenix', his first since 2011's 'Oceana'. For this album, he once again works alongside collaborator and mentor Simon Phillips, who is a crucial part of the process. Also appearing on the album are Joe Bonamassa, Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Kiko Loureiro, Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal, Billy Sheehan, Tony Franklin, Jimmy Johnson.

Sherinian is very proud of what 'The Phoenix' represents, especially in its joyous sense of diversity. "'The Phoenix' once again represents my ability to not only be a musical chameleon, but my ability to blend my signature style with the top guitarists in the world, of many genres.

"True to their vision, Derek and Simon achieved what is seemingly impossible for an album with so many guests: a unified sound and a clear direction. Perhaps inadvertently, they created THE guitar album of 2020, even though keyboards and drums are the main driving force throughout the compositions. Any touring plan nowadays is a distant utopia, but I wonder if this is the album which would warrant a run of shows where Derek finally unveils the vast material he has previously put out as a solo artist on a live setting. Rhino Records explores this gritty classic on an expansive collection that includes a newly remastered version of the original 1989 album for the first time - on HighResAudio. The set also includes 26 unreleased studio and live recordings of album tracks from the Lou Reed Archive.

New York captures Reed in exceptional form and is packed with incredible songs like "Busload Of Faith," "Halloween Parade" and "Dirty Blvd." The entire album has been remastered for the first time ever for this collection. The second disc presents unreleased live versions from the Lou Reed Archive of every album track compiled from multiple performances. To avoid duplication, none of these live tracks were taken from the set's accompanying DVD.

The third album showcases unreleased early versions of several album tracks from the Lou Reed Archive, including "Last Great American Whale," "Sick Of You" and "Dirty Blvd." Also featured is the non-LP track "The Room," as well as live versions of "Sweet Jane," a song Reed originally recorded with The Velvet Underground, and "Walk On The Wild Side," from his second solo album, Transformer (1972.)

Steve Hackett released of Selling England By The Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live At Hammersmith on 25th September. This live recording is from his critically acclaimed 2019 UK tour.

The concert was recorded at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo, the final night of the tour.
