Instrumental Soundtrack from Birdy, the 1984 film directed by Alan Parker. Includes original compositions and adaptations of tracks on Gabriel's third and fourth albums.

Recorded between October and December 1984 and originally released in 1985, Birdy marks the first occasion that Peter worked with French-Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois who was fresh from working on The Unforgettable Fire with U2. Lanois went on to co-produce the So and US albums with Peter. Birdy is the soundtrack to the Alan Parker movie of the same name - the tale of a Vietnam vet who harbours Icarus-like ambitions to fly - it finds Peter flexing his creative muscles free of any commercial pressures.

Sons Of Apollo - former Dream Theater members Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian, Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal (ex-Guns N' Roses), Billy Sheehan (The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth) and Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force) - are ready to ring in the new decade with a sonic boom with their second studio album, appropriately titled "MMXX" (pronounced: 20/20).

There are eight tracks on "MMXX", with variations in length totalling 60 minutes. "The final song is New World Today, which is 16 minutes long", says Portnoy. "This one has elements similar to Opus Maximus and Labyrinth on the previous album. It has some insane, brilliant instrumental moments, which I am sure the fans will love."

Perhaps recognizing Columbia Records' failure to release a proper greatest-hits album, Blue Oyster Cult re-recorded its best-known material on this collection, which was tied into the broadcast of a TV mini-series version of Stephen King's The Stand, a horror novel that had mentioned BOC's hit "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." The selection of songs here is good, and this edition of BOC (original members Eric Bloom, Allen Lanier, and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, plus replacement members Chuck Burgi and Jon Rogers) re-creates the original recordings closely. Dirty Shirley, a new band project featuring guitarist George Lynch (The End Machine, KXM, Lynch Mob, ex-Dokken) and vocalist/keyboardist Dino Jelusick (Animal Drive, Trans-Siberian Orchestra).

Croatian singer Dino Jelusick, over the course of just one album and one covers EP released with his band Animal Drive, has started to make quite the name for himself in the hard rock and metal scene. More than a few musicians of note have called up Dino to see if he might be interested in collaborating, which he is floored by. This talented young singer has an appreciation and deep respect for the musical heroes who preceded and profoundly influenced him. So, when George Lynch opened the doors to the idea of writing and producing a record together, Dino was more than intrigued. Frontiers, known for releasing interesting collaborations of this nature, was more than happy to be the label home for this project.

King Crimson reborn yet again -- the then-newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and his Mellotron, which is pushed into the background. The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail-end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup. And John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit, working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering yet melodic bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes. ~ Bruce Eder

King Crimson fell apart once more, seemingly for the last time, as David Cross walked away during the making of this album. It became Robert Fripp's last thoughts on this version of the band, a bit noiser overall but with some surprising sounds featured, mostly out of the group's past -- Mel Collins' and Ian McDonald's saxes, Marc Charig's cornet, and Robin Miller's oboe, thus providing a glimpse of what the 1972-era King Crimson might've sounded like handling the later group's repertory (which nearly happened). Indeed, Charig's cornet gets just about the best showcase it ever had on a King Crimson album, and the truth is that few intact groups could have gotten an album as good as Red together. The fact that it was put together by a band in its death throes makes it all the more impressive an achievement. Indeed, Red does improve in some respects on certain aspects of the previous album -- including "Starless," a cousin to the prior album's title track -- and only the lower quality of the vocal compositions keeps this from being as strongly recommended as its two predecessors. ~ Bruce Eder

By its very fast and loud nature thrash metal can be numbingly repetitive, its archaic anger and endless aggression pointless and overly familiar. And yet the exceptions can be glorious, none more potent or listenable than Sepultura. Having lost none of their trademark power and volume, this quartet's music has grown and aged well over the past 35 years thanks to a keen awareness of not repeating themselves-an extraordinarily difficult feat in the genre-with an inventive devotion to detail. While the song titles like, "Fear Pain Chaos Suffering" and angry lyrics infused with demons and urgency connect to the band's storied past, nearly every tune of this 12 track set has an unexpected musical flourish: the violins on the mighty first single, "Isolation"; a whispered soft section in "Autem"; the Brazilian drums that open "Capital Enslavement"; the opening flamenco-flavored acoustic guitars and vocal choirs of "Guardians of the Earth." This a brotherhood always looking for ways to stretch and grow their music beyond the confining bounds of the genre. The recording ethos here-a razor-edged, towering wall-of-amplification-has some surprisingly varied dynamics. The key to the band's continued intensity on Quadra comes from Derrick Green, whose raw roar has become the band's most identifiable sonic signature since replacing original vocalist Max Cavalera in 1997, and drummer Eloy Casagrande, who despite being the shortest tenured and youngest member, has also become a dynamic force as co-writer with guitarist Andreas Kisser. Given their exertions, thrash metal drummers are Olympic athletes and no one deserves a gold more than Casagrande. Fame, money, respect: Sepultura have it all. For the December 19, 1974 show, Ferry was supported by Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson, and John Porter (who had played on Roxy's 1973 LP For Your Pleasure), as well as a 30-piece orchestra conducted by Martyn Ford. (Among the cello players was Paul Buckmaster, well-known for his arrangements for Elton John and David Bowie.) The performance followed a brief period in which the Royal Albert Hall refused to book rock and pop artists after a number of troubling incidents occurred during the venue's 1971 season. The majority of the concert has been included on the release; it appears that his renditions of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" have been omitted.

Defying easy definitions, Houston's Khruangbin (Thai for "airplane," or more literally, "engine fly") soar through influences as diverse as Thai pop, Morricone westerns, dub reggae and surf guitar with a constant undercurrent of 70s American soul. The result is an original hybrid awash in cutting edge psychedelia and atmospheric in the extreme-otherworldly instrumental "world" music expertly alloyed by the considerable talents of Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar) and Donald "DJ" Johnson (drums). Their artistry lies in being an incredibly tight band making music that sounds loose and jammy.

And until now, the only voices heard on their records were repeated individual words, random conversational snippets and Lee's soaring wordless vocals. Enter fellow Texan Leon Bridges, the guitarist and retro soul singer who shares Khruangbin's defining impulse to seek new horizons.

Bridges' well-recorded, confident vocals are front and center in a broad and detailed sonic image, adding welcome new energy to the band's usual chill moodiness. The closing refrains of the ballad "Conversion" has more than a whiff of Stevie Wonder and he lays his smooth vocals over a repeated, gentle guitar figure on "Midnight." A heavier, more full steam groove powers the EP's standout track, "C-Side," where Johnson's synthesizer provides body and Chase Jordan's vibes add a piquant touch. Brazilian technical metal monsters Sepultura grew slowly from a devotion to the legends of their genre, eventually becoming the most successful metal band in Brazil's history as well as a worldwide influence. Originally released in 1997, The Healing Game marked an important transition for Van Morrison. After a period of crafting romantic ballads that found mainstream success, Van felt once more compelled to revisit the jazz and rhythm and blues-inspired style that influenced his earliest work. To achieve this, he assembled a killer new band that included saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, Georgie Fame and bassist Alec Dankworth.

"Van Morrison never stopped recording during the 1990s, but for a little while it seemed as if he was disconnected from his muse. It wasn't so much his series of jazz cover albums - he'd return to this vein often in subsequent decades - but his songwriting that showed signs bitterness, particularly on 1995's Days Like This, where he seemed dismissive of the very notion of being a songwriter. In that light, it's hard not to see 1997's The Healing Game as a rejuvenation. Indeed, the album's very title suggests that Morrison is in the process of mending fences and reconnecting with a sense of joy, a process that began during his deep dive into Mose Allison and other bluesy jazz artists in the mid-'90s. Morrison retains that sense of swing on The Healing Game - he also retains keyboardist Georgie Fame, who would become a fixture on Morrison's albums over the next two decades - and it invigorates a set of songs that aren't necessarily all that different from what he's been writing as of late; he's still specializing in ballads, blues, and folk-rock colored by R&B. The subtle differences make a difference, though, whether they lie in the lyrics or, especially, the music, which feels warmer and more relaxed than the album's relatively recent companions. Morrison seems at home within the easy grooves of The Healing Game, and while that alone is enough to make the album worth revisits, it's also true the album boasts a sturdy selection of songs, highlighted by the meditative title track, the searching "Rough God Goes Riding," and the impassioned "Fire in the Belly." "Saint Dominic's Preview"is the sixth studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. It was released in July 1972 by Warner Bros. Records. Rolling Stone declared it "the best-produced, most ambitious Van Morrison record yet released."

The diversity of the material on the album highlighted Morrison's fusing of Celtic folk, R&B, blues, jazz and the singer-songwriter genre. "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" and the title track were blends of soul and folk, while lesser known tracks such as "Gypsy" and "Redwood Tree" continued to display a lyrical celebration of nature's beauty. Also on the album were two lengthy tracks, "Listen to the Lion" and the closing "Almost Independence Day" which were given primal, cathartic and intense vocal performances from Morrison. These tracks were similar to the songs on his 1968 album, Astral Weeks.

"Poetic Champions Compose" is the seventeenth studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1987 on Mercury Records. It received generally positive reviews from critics, most of whom viewed it as adequate mood music.

"If the title didn't tip you off, the opening five-minute jazz instrumental "Spanish Steps" certainly reveals that Poetic Champions Compose is an art record. Of course, Van Morrison has been making art records since at least Inarticulate Speech of the Heart, perhaps Common One, so that shouldn't come as a surprise. What is a bit of a shock is that Morrison begins to shake off his self-conscious straitjacket here, letting a little more grit into the music, even if the record still is firmly ensconced in mid-tempos and ballads, with only Van's voice (soulful, yet not histrionic) to pull you in. Much of this tends to float by, with only the occasional song ("I Forgot That Love Existed," "Did Ye Get Healed?") distinguishing itself. The overly mellow atmosphere and Van's arch artiness may not make it universally appealing, yet this record is warmer, stronger than many of its predecessors, one of his highlights from the '80s." The subtitle of Van Morrison's album, Born to Sing: No Plan B, indicates the power that music still holds for this living legend. "No Plan B means this is not a rehearsal," says Morrison. "That's the main thing-it's not a hobby, it's real, happening now, in real time."

The album, recorded live in the studio with a core six-piece band (plus Morrison on piano, guitar, and alto saxophone), extends his musical roots into a signature blend that's impossible to imitate or to categorise.

As Morrison notes, perhaps the most striking thing on the new album is hearing him weigh in on the global financial and economic meltdown on several songs. Morrison, never known as a protest singer, insists he's not taking a political stand. "I'm not protesting, I'm just observing what's happening-like Lenny Bruce said, 'Observation, baby!,'" he says.

The sixth live album of Morrison's career had to be something special to stand out among its predecessors, and this track-bytrack concert re-creation of perhaps his most acclaimed studio release doesn't disappoint. Don't, however, expect a carbon copy of what went before, as its maker has seemingly put greater effort and energy into this project than he has most of his more recent studio albums.

Liberally daubing fresh light and shade onto such familiar material required a steady hand and, with some confidence, Van reveals previously hidden dynamics to Astral Weeks that time and budget constraints may have denied him back in 1968. The original album's guitarist, Jay Lerner, is on hand to embellish his earlier work, the addition of lush strings elevates some songs to new heights, while Morrison himself has come up with "epilogues" to a handful of song (the title track and Cyprus Avenue in particular), propelling their storylines into unchartered territory.

Naysayers may wince at the very thought of tampering with purity or perfection, but Morrison, an artist so often described as "spiritual", has been savvy and self-respectful enough to keep the spirit intact.

The collaboration between Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) and Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth) began in the late '90s. As Demons & Wizards, they released their self-titled debut in 1999 and followed with Touched By The Crimson King in 2005. The band also played live in 2019, whetting fans' appetites for fresh material. Now, after a gap of nearly 15 years they are back with a new album, the aptly titled III.

Among those helping out Kursch and Schaffer this time around were guitarists Jake Dreyer (Witherfall, Iced Earth) and Jim Morris, bassist Ruben Drake (Purgatory, Sons Of Liberty) and drummer Brent Smedley (Iced Earth). There were several backing vocalists as well along with the PA'dam chamber choir appearing on two tracks.
