New York has been the entrance door to the United States for the continuous waves of immigrants coming from Europe and, later, of the rest of the world. The population of the city continues being one of the most varied of the whole country from an ethnic point of view. In 2000, the population from New York was composed by 44,7% of white, 26,6% of black, 9,8% of Asian and islanders from the Pacific and 18,3% of other ethnoses. The inhabitants of Hispanic origin represent the total population's 27%. The last wave of immigrants comes from the territories that conformed the Soviet Union. Surface, 786 km².
