Peppered with atmospheric bits of prepared media and snippets of dialogue (the brooding opener "Am I Awake" is prefaced by a veritable grocery list of the world's ills, both past and present), the ten-track set, which features guest spots from In This Moment frontwoman Maria Brink and Sick of It All frontman Lou Koller, is obviously meant to be devoured in a single sitting. Luckily, P.O.D. keep things interesting throughout the record's just-over-40-minute runtime, touching on everything from anthemic alt-rock ("This Goes Out to You") and fiery hip-hop ("Get Down") to hardcore punk ("Revolución") and soaring post-grunge ("The Awakening"). The story itself is fairly straightforward; heartache begets self-destruction and eventually redemption, but P.O.D. manages to deliver the goods with an easy, everyman prowess and just the right amount of humility and tough love to lend conviction to even the most strident narrative tropes. Killer Kings is a musical alliance between Gregory Lynn Hall (ex-101 South) and Tristan Avakian (ex-Red Dawn, Queen Extravaganza). Killer Kings first came about when Frontiers Records president Serafino Perugino thought of bringing Gregory Lynn Hall, the former singer of 101 South (an AOR band who released three albums between 2000 and 2009) and Tristan Avakian, a very gifted guitarist who made his name in the 90s with the melodic rock band Red Dawn, together. Musically, Killer Kings mixes the AOR approach of both Red Dawn and 101 South with some interesting twists. Gregory Lynn Hall has had a long history in the music industry, in all areas from studio work to live performances. Gregory pounded the pavement in the thriving 80s Hollywood rock scene, playing at all the rock venues from Gazzaris to the Troubadour to The Country Club. He eventually left L.A. after the 80s hard rock scene died down and became a session vocalist, singing on many well-known Christian artists' albums. In the late 90s, he returned to California and in 1999, while doing a session in Malibu, he met Roger Scott Craig (ex-Fortune) and thus 101 South was born. Shortly after the first 101 South album was finished in 2000, Gregory was asked to join the band Heaven & Earth as their bass player and toured with them to support the "Windows To The World" album. He would then go on to record two more acclaimed 101 South albums and one solo record in 2014. Tristan Avakian is a professional musician of many years with extensive experience in theatre, touring, writing and producing. Cirque Du Soleil, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Biohazard are just some of the names from the varied genres and artists he has immersed himself in. He has also worked with producers such as Steve Thompson and Rob Thomas and joined the Queen Extravaganza show in the US. His alluring alchemy of prodigious musical talent and love of psychedelic voodoo stretched across five decades, both as a session player and a solo leader. The late Dr., who died in 2019, and Shane Theriot-who both produced and plays on the album-gathered a first-class group of local players at the gorgeous Esplanade Studios with engineer Misha Kachkachishvili, and Music Shed Studios with engineer Jack Miele, to cut a collection of old favorites and well-known country music classics which make for a fitting and compelling swan song. The recording quality is clear and unadorned, focused on Rebennack's weathered voice and instinctual keyboard skills. Theriot, also a New Orleans native and who has carved out a distinguished career playing with a variety of musicians including The Neville Brothers and Hall & Oates (for whom he is currently musical director), plays guitars, bass and even cardboard box drum. The final Dr. John album opens appropriately with a version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" which plays in a relaxed New Orleans piano professor style. Rebennack and Nelson make a creaky but authentic duo on the traditional "Gimme That Old Time Religion," which also features a pair of masterful New Orleanians in drummer Herlin Riley and keyboardist Jon Cleary. Perhaps the most Dr. John-like tune is "I Walk on Guilded Splinters," a wonderfully low-down groove he first recorded for his 1968 debut Gris-Gris. Of the pair of Hank Williams covers, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," with the Dr.'s low, whispery, croaky vocals accompanied by Theriot on lap steel, is most memorable. The Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line," fitted with a second line rhythm and a horn section, features guest vocals by Katie Pruitt and Aaron Neville, the latter of whom's voice has sadly lost more than a step. Pruitt returns on "Holy Water," a new Rebennack original that chronicles his heroin addiction: "I can hear my momma sayin' boy whatcha doin'/ You don't change, you go straight to ruin." He's possessed by a brutal, take-no-prisoners attitude throughout the record -- that acoustic April Wine cover is as soft as it gets -- and he's unapologetic for pledging allegiance to the sound of the Sunset Strip circa 1987, going so far as to hire Duff McKagan to play bass and finding room for Steve Stevens to play a little guitar. Thing is, Give 'Em Hell winds up sounding tougher and harder than Skid Row did at their peak. First off, there is only one power ballad -- the grinding "Had Enough," which has a bit of a candied Beatles chorus -- and the guitars are always pushed to the front of the mix, giving the illusion that Bach has to scream to be heard.
