Recorded in a tiny Greenwich Village nightclub on November 4, 5 and 6, 1962 (just weeks after Streisand inked her first record deal with Columbia on October 1), Live At The Bon Soir was originally intended to be Barbra's debut album for the label. The tapes for Live At The Bon Soir were eventually shelved in favor of 1963's The Barbra Streisand Album (which offered studio versions of 11 songs from Barbra's nightclub repertoire). That groundbreaking album took home several Grammys including Album of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performance. With the release of Barbra Streisand - Live At The Bon Soir, her first album since 2021's Release Me 2 (a career-spanning compilation of rare and previously unreleased recordings), Columbia Records celebrates Barbra Streisand's 60th anniversary with the label. She is the only artist-solo or group-to have charted #1 albums across six consecutive decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s). 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of her legendary appearances at the famed Greenwich Village haunt, The Bon Soir. For the first time, Barbra Streisand - Live At The Bon Soir includes 24 tracks that have been produced, mixed and approved by Barbra Streisand and released in their entirety as an album. All of the original master tapes are from Barbra's personal vault. Barbra Streisand - Live At The Bon Soir was produced by Barbra Streisand, Martin Erlichman and Jay Landers. In Landers extensive liner notes (which also include song-by-song descriptions of the album's 24 tracks), he remarks, "The science of recording has made quantum leaps since 1962. Grammy Award-winning engineer, Jochem van der Saag, has subtly solved audio issues in ways his predecessors could hardly have fathomed. Absolutely nothing about Barbra's sterling vocals has been altered. However, the overall sonic picture has been greatly improved from the original tapes." According to van der Saag, 'The moment we played the tapes through modern state-of-the-art speakers, it was clear what the original engineers, Roy Halee and Ad "Pappy" Theroux, had faced. The club's acoustics were obviously not designed for recording, and there was a lot of leakage from the instruments into her vocal mic. If we wanted to lower the volume of the piano for example, the vocal volume would decrease, too. To give listeners 'the best seat in the house,' we used cutting-edge spectral editing technology, clarifying the true artistry of Barbra and her band.'" Barbra was accompanied by a first-rate quartet of veteran musicians: Tiger Haynes on guitar, Averill Pollard on bass, John Cresci on drums and Peter Daniels on piano. They would spend the next few years performing and writing songs for other artists, including 'I Mean To Shine,' for Barbra Streisand. One of their early incarnations included Chevy Chase on drums (yes, the comedic actor from the 'Vacation films). Producer, Gary Katz, who had hired the duo to do the writing for other artists, decided one day that their compositions were too complex for other artists to record, and so suggested getting a band together and recording themselves. They assembled a band, including the great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitar later a member of The Doobie Brothers). Also brought in was vocalist, David Palmer, as Fagen suffered from stage fright and often would be unable to perform his songs live. The result was this, their debut record, a collection of some of the best Jazz/Rock songs. Really well written and performed by an incredibly tight band. Fagen would handle solo vocal duties on 4 of the tracks and share vocals with Palmer on 3 of them, while Palmer took the lead on 2 tracks. Drummer, Jim Hodder sang on 'Midnight Cruiser.' Two of Fagen's four songs were the singles, 'Do It Again' and 'Reelin' In The Years,' the later starting off (and continues throughout) with a ripping solo by session player, Elliot Randall, and in fact, was rated by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page as his favourite guitar solo of all time. That's quite an endorsement. The song peaked at #11 on the Billboard Charts. 'Do It Again' charted at #6, making it their second highest chart for a single. 'Dirty Work,' another great song from the record features Palmer. The album is tight, with some of the best musicianship money can buy. A great collection of easy-listening songs. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. Even if Circus and 5 were sunk by their own bloat, they still had good singles, as did those early albums, so the 2000 collection Greatest Hits is a terrific encapsulation of Kravitz at the peak of his talents. Certainly, there are some fan favorites missing, and the non-chronological sequencing is maddening (two of his three worst singles are within the first three songs), but it does boast the magnificent new single "Again," along with such seminal Kravitz moments as "Are You Gonna Go My Way," "Mr. Cabdriver," "Stand By My Woman," "Always on the Run," "Believe," "Let Love Rule," and "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," which is enough to make this a first-class greatest-hits compilation. Though he doesn't flaunt his jazz aspirations as he did in the mid-'80s, Mercury Falling feels more serious than The Dream of the Blue Turtles, primarily because of its reserved, high-class production and execution. Building from surprisingly simple, memorable melodies, Sting creates multi-layered, vaguely soul-influenced arrangements that carry all of the hallmarks of someone who has studied music, not lived it. Of course, there are many pleasures in the record -- for all of his pretensions, Sting remains an engaging melodicist, as well as a clever lyricist. There just happens to be a distinct lack of energy, stemming from the suffocating layers of synthesizers.
