There is perhaps no question that has occupied Deadheads' time and consumed more emotion over the last 20 or so years, ever since bassist Phil Lesh and guitarist Bob Weir reunited the band after Jerry Garcia's 1995 death. The tempo wars have claimed several versions of the post-Garcia Dead, and if the question seems banal, it nevertheless conceals irreconcilable philosophical differences. For Lesh, these songs are meant to pump with energy, swirling up the audience in a psychedelic dervish. For Weir, they should be played slowly, with purpose and focus, "an audio playlet that needed to sink into the audience's mind," as writer Joel Selvin puts it. The music of the Grateful Dead, in Weir's formulation, is bigger, vaster, and contains sweeping views; why speed through it? On Weir's second official release with his Wolf Bros project, Live in Colorado, Vol. 2, he stages some of the most beloved material in the Grateful Dead's catalog with the passion and reverence of a couple spending their 50th anniversary looking back on their wedding day. It's a striking set, one that does justice to Weir's vision without ever succumbing to the sense of drag that can occasionally topple Dead & Company, the stadium-touring band he fronts with John Mayer. As is typically the case with Weir's solo work, there is no lead guitarist, and thus no attempt to dig around in the DNA of these songs to discover what else they might contain. Leaning instead on bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, and especially drummer Jay Lane, Weir's arrangements expand these songs outward, their scope and sense of majesty evoked by the horns, strings, and pedal steel of the accompanying Wolfpack ensemble. There's never a question as to where we might be going, only an offhanded awe at how stately this music turns out to be. Much of the album's grace is owing to the pleasant contrast between Weir's late style as a rhythm guitarist and the slickness of the band. His instrument is constantly buzzing, and he doesn't strum it so much as brush at it in a way that makes it sound like a live wire being batted with a feather. He can be halting, sometimes a touch behind the beat, frequently rough as he roots around the edges of the songs in search of new rhythmic pathways. It's a winningly hardheaded mode of playing, one that comes from having abandoned the concept of perfection or completion decades ago, and the romantic swirl of the band mimics the emotion of his playing if not the tone. When you are a duo making rock, it means your guitar (or bass) has to channel both sides of the spectrum - weight and melody. For 'Embers in the Dark' this meant lower tuning and bigger amps. The duo wanted a bigger, sludgier and a more gravelly sound. That's exactly what the listeners get. Songs like 'Flatline' evoke the very best of that era. Big riffs. Crunchy guitars. An in-studio echo to the drums and vocals as if they've been lifted from a live session. There is an element of old-school chugging rock to the riffs but they are anthemic and loud. For instance 'Beat the Retreat' reminds of Soundgarden's 'The Day I Tried to Live' as it has the same off-kilter mid-riff slide. Blackbird Hill gives it a T-Rex/Thin Lizzy high octave solo edge though so it sounds very different and like grunge does 70's rock. Not only did they trade their souls for over thirty years of globetrotting and metal extravagance. They also haggled to keep their playing abilities, they bartered to keep their looks - we get older, gain weight and lose hair, yet they look like they've just walked off "that" song's beach video set from 1992! Recently confirmed for Bloodstock next year, the Derbyshire festival described them as SoCal-Alt rockers. Well it doesn't matter where they come from, all the Alt has gone, this album is all about the rock. Straight up rock! Just play opener'That Ain't Livin' or 'Failure' that are straight out of the Bon Scott, AC/DC play book. They explore their inner Woodstock with 'Not Like Any Other'. We also get some ballads. They are a rock band and they are very good at it. 'Kill the Pain' is a builder, that crescendos into a massive wall of emotional noise, 'Long Road' by contrast, is a chirpy, happy, up tempo ballad and 'Everything Changes' is an introspective, piece of rock pop that Blind Melon used to craft. Ugly Kid Joe can be the butt of a few jokes and it's easy to see why. One hit wonders, quirky songs, cover versions and not taking themselves too seriously. On this album we get quirky with 'Drinkin and Drivin', a play on country and western and 'Up to the City', which is a slow quirky tune. Their cover version effort is a rocked up slant on the Kinks classic 'Lola'. And there's a nice touch with a tribute to all the rock legends played and sung with their tongue firmly in their cheeks with a mid-album highlight, 'Dead Friends Play'. OXYMORE is an homage to the late French composer Pierre Henry, with whom Jarre had been intending on collaborating for Jarre's GRAMMY-nominated project album 'Electronica'. Henry was an iconic figure in electronic and classical music, and one of Jarre's mentors at the Groupe de Recherche Musical (GRM) where he studied. From rock and indie to jazz and prog, WIZRD knows all the rules but deliberately break them! Their debut full-length album Seasons releasd on Karisma Records Seasons is a groovy, catchy and progressive masterclass, with beautiful vocal harmonies, awesome melodies, quirky jazz grooves and a rock'n'roll drive to die for. Formed at the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim, WIZRD's four-piece line-up consists of Hallvard Gaardløs (Spidergawd, Draken and more) on bass and lead vocals, Karl Bjorå (Megalodon Collective and more) on guitar and vocals, Vegard Lien Bjerkan (Soft Ffog and more) on keyboards and vocals, Axel Skalstad (Krokofant, Soft Ffog and more) on drums. Since 2020 the band has been working on their debut album, produced by Norwegian film score composer and Jaga Jazzist drummer Martin Horntveth. The album was recorded in Studio Paradiso in Oslo by Marcus Forsgren (Bror Forsgren, Jaga Jazzist) and Horntveth. Frontwoman Florence Shaw isn't so much a singer as a vocalist, speaking the lyrics in a dusky, rich and inquisitive voice that you can imagine narrating audio books (if only someone would hire her for a navigation app). She hadn't been in a band before Dry Cleaning, but had a habit of jotting down everyday musings on her phone-giving her an instant treasure trove of curious, sometimes elliptical lyrics. That hasn't changed on the South London band's second album. Excellent opener "Anna Calls from The Arctic"- taking cues from the high-drama of film composer John Barry and cruising on groovy bass-finds her recounting a conversation with a friend calling from the Arctic: "Nothing works/ Everything's expensive/ And opaque and privatized/ My shoe organizing thing arrived/ Thank god." But in Shaw's distinct, disarming delivery, the mundane feels surreal. "Things are shit, but they're gonna be OK," she declares on "Kwenchy Kups," which is about the joy of seeing otters and shows a smirking side of Shaw: "And I'm going to see the water caterpillar/ There's no such thing/ Hmm? Nice idea." The music, meanwhile, here and across many tracks, is like Wire served sunny side-up. But Wire never wrote a song like "Gary Ashby," an ode to a pet turtle who escaped during lockdown, with Shaw cooing his name. "Driver's Story" is chill-out music with spiky edges and the frontwoman's deep "oooooooohs" show a Kim Gordon influence. "Hot Penny Day" is s funked-up sonic freak-out, and "Stumpwork" jangles like late-era Pavement (complete with Steve Malkmus-worthy lyrics: "All the hairs on my arm raise up/ Because you are wearing a fleece/ That has become electrified"). Hard-charging "Don't Press Me" finds Shaw melodically complaining to herself about stressing herself out, shadowed by a whistle that almost sounds like feedback.
