Formed by three rock 'n' roll lifers and friends: bassist/vocalist Todd Kerns, guitarist Stef Burns and drummer Will Hunt. The players' resumes speak for themselves, but rest assured, if you are looking for hard hitting, hooky, in-yer-face rock 'n' roll, then Heroes And Monsters will be good for what ails you. The band approaches its style with influences in tow, but also with an understanding and appreciation of the current rock scene. A best of both worlds scenario, if you will. Todd Kerns is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer. He is most noted for being the bass player and back-up singer in Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators and for being the frontman of gold record selling Canadian band The Age Of Electric. In recent years he has been making his mark as a singer-songwriter with sold-out solo performances as well as fronting former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick's band as well as his own Canadian supergroup, Toque. Guitarist Stef Burns has a fantastic and varied history in rock music. He has spent time playing with pop acts like Sheila E, Berlin and Huey Lewis & The News as well as rock acts like Y&T, with whom he recorded four albums, and Alice Cooper, playing on the albums "Hey Stoopid" and "The Last Temptation". Stef currently plays with Italian rock superstar Vasco Rossi and also has his own band, The Stef Burns League. Drummer Will Hunt currently resides in the drum throne for Evanescence, with whom he started playing in 2007, and has performed and written on their last three studio albums, including their most recent release, "The Bitter Truth", which debuted at #1 on 27 different countries' album charts. Over the years, the in-demand skinsman has performed with Dark New Day, Skrape, Staind, Vasco Rossi, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Slaughter and more. Following the success of the recent string of albums, from Albion to Illuminati, Hughes was joined once again by guitarists Dann Rosingana and Steve Grocott along with bass player Steve McKenna, keyboard maestro Darrel Treece-Birch and guest drummer Markus Kullman (Sinner, Glenn Hughes, Voodoo Circle) for the recording of Something Wicked This Way Comes. Ten continue to raise the musical bar higher for themselves, a goal they push on every release. Stunning guitar work, rich keyboards, excellent bass and drum interplay along with Hughes' rich vocals are the order of the day here, as they were on this album's immediate predecessor, Here Be Monsters. Something Wicked This Way Comes was produced by Gary Hughes and mixed and mastered by Dennis Ward. Ten's longstanding professional association with Dennis has been ongoing since he mixed their 2011 album, Stormwarning and has always guaranteed albums with stunning sound and production. Fans should note that there are no ties between Something Wicked This Way Comes and Here Be Monsters or anything of this nature. (Though it comes after the death of drummer Richard Swift from complications of chronic alcoholism in 2018, Electrophonic Chronic was primarily recorded beforehand so that Swift is, gloriously, all over the record.) The Arcs tend to get pigeonholed as "garage rock" (that catchall for much of Auerbach's personal work), but there is so, so much more to this. Call it heresy, but it must be said that the spaced-out soul of "Heaven Is a Place" is almost Prince-like, with red-hot guitar and Auerbach hitting some deliciously nasty "oohs." "Rollin' through the clouds/ Lean back in my dove white Cadillac/ Just cruisin' slow/ Heaven is a place I know where all the lovers go," he sings. He plays old-school crooner on "Eyez," with its slow-cruising rollercoaster of bass and synth. "River" is David Ruffin-esque and layers on shimmering, tentative Hammond B3-courtesy of Leon Michels-for a dose of drama; "A Man Will Do Wrong" is Miracles-smooth with its Motown romance and harmonies. Reeking of woozy B3 and a hit of flute, "Backstage Mess" evokes doo-wop's shuffle-and-shoop. Detroit is not the only reference, as you can hear plenty of Memphis Stax soul-that extra-heart wrenching, drunk on the blues style-on "Only One for Me." Punched up by spritely glockenspiel, it's a lonely-boy love song with a twist: "I got a feeling I'm the only one for me." After all, Auerbach sings, "No one's ever made me feel much better/ Stay with me through all the stormy weather." "Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore," meanwhile, loops in haunted mellotron for its pragmatic plea for peace in the wake of a break-up: "We should take care of one another/ Not destroy each other . What are we fighting for?/ Love doesn't live here anymore." Bright and '70s laid-back "Sunshine" lives up to its name thanks to a childish "sha la la" bridge and punch-drunk horns that will crack open your heart. Picked up by Frontiers Music on the strength of demos, Arctic Rain debuted with their album, The One in 2020. Three years on, Alpenborg has left the band to be replaced by Kaspar Dahlqvist with Richard Tonyson add as their new drummer. Arctic Rain drops their sophomore album, Unity, this month, again with Frontiers Music. Simply, Arctic Rain aspires to give listeners essential and classic melodic hard rock ala the Eighties yet timeless. Their sound, as before, is driven by the core elements of strong and harmonious riffage, epic guitar solos, steady rock groove from the rhythm section, and memorable refrains. Jonsson continues to have a strong vocal presence, perhaps singing more assertive across this album than in the past. Of course, these things are wrapped in song melody and vocal harmony which give the songs some AOR respectability. Through Romero's career thus far, he has performed killer renditions of several rock and metal classics as part of his shows fronting legendary acts like Rainbow and the Michael Schenker Group (MSG). He's also covered classic songs by Journey, Queen, Rainbow, and more with Spanish metallers Lords Of Black.
