Instead, Wylde and company have crafted another chugging set of Sabbath and Zeppelin-inspired originals that are executed with extreme prejudice. Opener "Trampled Down Below" sneaks in on a wave of bass-anchored sonic mysticism before dropping its payload via a full-court press that sees all four members locking in for a seismic doom blues jamboree with a little post-grunge posturing tossed in for good measure -- vocally, Wylde is often a dead ringer for late Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley. It's a formula that's applied liberally throughout, but as far as straight-up, in-your-face guitar rock goes, it's hard to argue with the quality of the results, especially on neck-snapping standouts like "Seasons of Falter" and "Room of Nightmares." Released on 13 July 1973 by EMI Records in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US, it was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre, London, with production by Roy Thomas Baker, John Anthony and the band members themselves. The album was influenced by heavy metal and progressive rock. The lyrics are based on a variety of topics, including folklore ("My Fairy King") and religion ("Jesus"). Lead singer Freddie Mercury wrote five of the ten tracks, lead guitarist Brian May wrote four songs (including "Doing All Right", which he co-wrote with Tim Staffell while in the band Smile), and drummer Roger Taylor both wrote and sang "Modern Times Rock and Roll". The final song on the album is a short instrumental version of "Seven Seas of Rhye", the full version of which would appear on the band's second album, Queen II. "Like any patchy but promising debut from a classic rock group, it's often easy to underrate Queen's eponymous 1973 debut, since it has no more than one well-known anthem and plays more like a collection of ideas than a cohesive album. But what ideas! Almost every one of Queen's signatures are already present, from Freddie Mercury's operatic harmonies to Brian May's rich, orchestral guitar overdubs and the suite-like structures of "Great King Rat." That rich, florid feel could be characterized as glam, but even in these early days that appellation didn't quite fit Queen, since they were at once too heavy and arty to be glam and -- ironically enough, considering their legendary excess -- they were hardly trashy enough to be glam. But that only speaks to the originality of Queen: they may have traded in mystical sword 'n' sorcerers themes like so many '70s prog bands, and they may have hit as hard as Led Zeppelin (and Jimmy Page's guitar army certainly was a forefather to May's overdubs), but they didn't sound like anybody else, they were too odd in their theatricality to be mistaken for another band. That much was apparent on this debut, but one thing was crucially missing: songs that could coalesce their sound and present it in a memorable fashion. There is an exception to that rule -- the wild, rampaging opener "Keep Yourself Alive," one of their very best songs -- but too often the album plays like a succession of ideas instead of succinct songs, and the group's predilection for suites only highlights this, despite the occasional blast of fury like "Modern Times Rock & Roll." This can be quite appealing as sheer, visceral sound and, in that regard, Queen is kind of irresistible. It showcases the band in all their ornate splendor yet it's strangely lean and hard, revealing just how good the band was in their early days as a hard rock band. That might not quite make it an overlooked gem -- it remains patchy on a song for song basis -- but it sure makes for an interesting debut that provides a rough road map to their later work." That being said, sonically, this latest album from ISSA lands somewhere between her revered debut album "Signs of Angels" and 2018's well received "Run With The Pack", which makes "Lights Of Japan" one of the talented singer's absolute best albums thus far. As fans have come to expect with this absolutely fabulous vocalist, "Lights Of Japan" is a truly gorgeous slab of melodic rock majesty. Huge vocals? Check. Soaring, beautiful melodies? Check. Hooks galore? Check. For "Lights Of Japan", Issa worked with producer Michele Guaitoli, who has produced albums by Visions Of Atlantis, Kalidia, SheWolf, and many more, and is also the vocalist for Visions Of Atlantis, Temperance, and ERA. Guaitoli also played guitars and bass on the album as well as contributing to the songwriting on two tracks. For the bulk of the album's songwriting, Issa's husband James Martin and his brother Tom, both former members of UK melodic rockers VEGA, contributed their immense talents. It's often a challenge to take influences from the past to remain relevant in an ever-evolving music market - these gentlemen sprinkle in guitar-driven material with the right soulful, passionate vocal melodies/harmonies that keep people moving along, taking the energy of the 80's/early 90's into the current century. The electricity pulsating from the main chord progressions and complementary clean/aggressive transitions of Jaakko Leaflet and Antti Kallio sends immediate earworms to the brain on first exposure for "Earth" or the heads down, dirty rocker "Shades of Black". The steady rhythm section duties of bassist Fabian Korsström and drummer Pekka Jokela fill the foundation as steady as necessary - throwing down little fills or additional hooks to make "Gonna Do It" and the Alter Bridge-like "Someone Somewhere" intoxicating toe-tappers. Stronger background vocal support from the band allows for deeper chorus affiliations - traversing the sleaze/modern hard rock angles on the commercial-oriented "Resonate" while possessing a bit of that Scandinavian touch on the thoughtful, bouncy "Johnny Two-Face". The versatility of tracks is an ideal selling point, brought home by the magnetic voice of Jaakko as the main vocalist - he can be smooth or restrained as in the opening verse for "Alone-Alive" while executing a primal, psychedelic-driven aura on the already talked about "Shades of Black". Closer "Something Beyond" could be a difference maker - the cultural, Celtic-oriented harmonies plus acoustic to electric riffs possess a bit of that Finnish melancholy like latter period Sentenced, Jaakko giving his all in engaging melodies while the lead breaks set ears to stun mode. Together at this point for a decade, Leaflet may seem on the surface to be a very basic heavy/hard rock-oriented band - yet Something Beyond has that extra depth of multi-generational appeal through dynamic compositions, solid focus, and that alluring vocal harmony component.
