Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy's heavy, dual-guitar attack. Black Rose also turned out to be the band's most musically varied, accomplished, and successful studio album, reaching number two on the U.K. album chart upon release. Lizzy leader Phil Lynott is again equipped with a fine set of originals, which the rest of the band shines on -- the percussion-driven opener "Do Anything You Want To," the pop hit "Waiting for an Alibi," and a gentle song for Lynott's newly born daughter, "Sarah." Not all the material is as upbeat, such as the funky "S&M," as well two grim tales of street life and substance abuse -- "Toughest Street in Town" and "Got to Give It Up" (the latter sadly prophetic for Lynott). Black Rose closes with the epic seven-minute title track, which includes an amazing, complex guitar solo by Moore that incorporates Celtic themes against a hard rock accompaniment. This "prequel" to The Shadow Self, her upcoming full-length, comprises new songs, covers, and a new mix, with some guest appearances tossed in. While some of the music is excellent, the project ultimately feels cobbled together rather than purposefully presented. Single and opening track "No Bitter End" is the video version. Slick, anthemic, pop-oriented metal, it has an irresistible hook. Tarja's stacked lead and backing vocals imbue it with a studied emotion that stands in contrast to its passionate melody. Michael Monroe lends his voice, guitar, saxophone, and harmonica to "Your Heaven and Your Hell." It's a fine, bluesy hard rock vehicle for the former Hanoi Rocks frontman, but ill-suited to Turunen's more classically oriented gothic singing. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith adds his drums to "Eagle Eye," a pop-metal cut that the vocalist imbues with a theatrical presence. Tarja gets points for her choice of covers here. Her rendition of Paul McCartney's "House of Wax" contains more drama than the original but doesn't sacrifice nuance in the imaginative melody and arrangement. Buoyed by a large string ensemble, the singer delivers the song with authority. It's her brand of symphonic metal at its best. Even stranger is the reading of the theme from "Goldfinger" immortalized by Shirley Bassey. The contrast between the fat, crunchy guitars and symphonic strings and horns comes off kitschy but cool, leaving the more sultry jazz presentation of the original in the dust. Yet Tarja's singular voice pulls it all together in the end. Unfortunately, her "An Empty Dream" contains all-too-icy electronics and sounds like a rejected outtake from a Sarah Brightman session, while the Dead Can Dance-esque musical abstraction in "Witch-Hunt" goes on for far too long to maintain the listener's interest. Tim Palmer's bombastic new mix of Within Temptation's "Paradise (What About Us?)" -- which originally featured Turunen as a guest -- sounds like a heavy metal Jim Steinman production, but that's far from a bad thing. The guitar breaks are killer, and the vocal contrast between Sharon den Andel's powerful alto and Tarja's soaring soprano harmony is arresting. Ultimately, The Brightest Void doesn't sound like a stand-alone document as much as a product to sell on tour while awaiting the album's release. Trios will likely be received equally well and is jam-packed with Marsden's retellings of songs by Jeff Beck, The James Gang, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Rick Derringer, and others. It's a wonderful batch of performances that will appeal to rock fans everywhere. Bernie Marsden is a supremely talented guitarist, songwriter, and singer who was an original member of mega-band Whitesnake before going solo four decades ago. Marsden appears on the first seven Whitesnake records, Snakebite (1978), Trouble (1978), Lovehunter (1979), Ready & Willing (1980), Live In The Heart Of The City (1980), Come An' Get It (1981) and Saints & Sinners (1982). Bernie has also performed with some of rock music's most impressive names including Ginger Baker, Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Jon Lord, Gary Moore, The Ringo Starr Band, Cozy Powell, Rory Gallagher, Jack Bruce, Warren Haynes, and Joe Bonamassa. Treasures abound on Trios and dropping the needle anywhere on it will yield excellent results. Want even more fun? Cue up Marsden's version of Rick Derringer's "Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo." Bernie absolutely roasts this one on guitar and throws down some fine vocal work, as well. To hear such an engaging song played this well is to experience the idea of blues/rock at its best. Deep album highlights include Jimi's "Spanish Castle Magic" and Robin Trower's "Too Rolling Stoned." Marsden plays and sings with the kind of authority and conviction needed to light up the music of so many superstars and Trios gets better and better the more you listen to it. Hydra is the brainchild of Swedish songwriter/musician Henrik Hedstrom, who has been a songwriter based out of Stockholm for many years and a friend of drummer/producer Daniel Flores (First Signal, Find Me, The Murder Of My Sweet) for the past 15 years. Flores drums and plays keyboards on the album, while vocals and lead and rhythm guitars are handled by Andi Kravljaca. Henrik plays keyboards and acoustic and clean guitars in Hydra. In his own words, Henrik Hedstrom was "kind of a musical prodigy and always sang or played piano at the school celebrations." In Stockholm, Henrik started and joined a few bands through the years, serving as a singer, guitar player, and songwriter. He eventually decided to start a solo career and began working with Swedish producer Anders Bagge. After some time with Anders, Henrik started a new band, Hydra. Around the same time, Henrik was signed as a songwriter by Warner/Chappell, writing pop music, but this ultimately wasn't where his heart was and he eventually started a career outside of music. In 2007, Henrik met Daniel Flores, whom he was introduced to through a mutual friend, Andreas Novak (Mind's Eye, House of Shakira). The two wound up recording some pop music demos for Warner/Chappell, but again, Henrik's heart wasn't really in it and in 2009, he ended his deal with Warner/Chappell. In 2019, Flores reached out to Henrik and asked him to send over some old and newer versions of his songs, particularly the rock ones.
