Frey, a co-founding member of the Eagles, one of the world's best-loved and best-selling bands, also carved out a notable solo career during their hiatus in the '80s and beyond, something he carried through with as an artist right up until his untimely passing in January 2016. Above the Clouds compiles the key elements of Frey's music both before and after the Eagles became international superstars, showcasing the broad range and wide influence of the Detroit-bred singer-songwriter in the process. And while Glenn clearly embraced the burgeoning video age, nabbing a vaunted 1985 MTV Music Video Award with the cinematically dramatic clip for "Smuggler's Blues," it's the enduring essence of the man's songwriting skills on display here that truly sealed his legacy as a solo artist. The album explores Frey's prowess beyond the charts, from the classy to the classic. Included are the broad swath of "After Hours," his majestic take on "For Sentimental Reasons," a harmonic nod to the Beach Boys with a spot-on cover of "Caroline, No," and the sheer battle cry of "Route 66" among them. The album are highlights the early output of the duo formed by longtime friends Frey and JD Souther known as Longbranch/Pennywhistle makes its digital debut. Originally released on the Amos label in 1969, the self-titled Longbranch/Pennywhistle may have ultimately been consigned to the side bins of the acid-rock era, but songs like "Kite Woman" and "Run, Boy, Run" serve as the literal seeds of the country-rock movement Frey and the Eagles perfected to a T. Besides navigating the success of his own fine solo career (see "You're Only Lonely"), Souther also went on to be a chief Frey collaborator on such pivotal Eagles songs as "Best of My Love," "New Kid in Town," and "Heartache Tonight." Glenn Frey, both as solo artist and as a member of the Eagles, has received many accolades, including six GRAMMY Awards, numerous gold and platinum albums and performed sold-out concert tours worldwide. Frey is the founding member, vocalist and songwriter of the Eagles, one of the most influential bands in America. It's hard to believe that it's been nearly a decade since Regal Worm first emerged from the mud. And what a long segmented body of work it has been with no less than five albums under its clitellum! (look it up, it's not a rude word). With a small bag of heavy friends, Varrod Goblink continues to create astonishing music in his very own loft laboratory. Crammed with a growing number of vintage, dusty instruments, clean vintage instruments, computer tech foolery and weird looking banks of machines festooned with twiddly knobs, a visitor might wonder if they'd accidentally wandered into some sort of TARDIS. Varrod has added even more wide ranging musical ingredients into the cosmic soup; from the skittering tribal rhythms of afro hippie rock in Bong Song to the New Wave Devo 7/4 time jerkiness of Hop. The infectiously bouncy and green minded, Chlorophyllia evokes the memory of eighties post punk popsters, Fun Boy Three (if they'd harked from Dagobah rather than Coventry) and there's even an electronica nod to Varrod's mother band, the hitmakers, I Monster, no less. Lyrically, this new outing is tonally more wriggly and playful than last year's album, (The Hideous Goblink. Do we need to mention the title again?) which reflected on the troubling issues we currently face this century. Worm! does not dwell on such dark matters this time around. In Regal Wishbone, Varrod contemplates if humans could only fly wondrously like birds and in Don't Freak Out The Creatures our hero then considers space travel as the only way forward. When the listener really takes flight is experiencing the grandiose nine and a quarter minute long Kazakhstan folk/jazz/EDM centre piece symphony, The Steppe Nomad Space Program, a tale full of hope as extraterrestrials exit their craft in the Steppe only to be greeted by fellow nomads of the humankind. It's not all Sci-fi Ray Bradbury-land though; for your delight, there is the cosmological and ecclesiastical sounding (with a dash of acid techno thrown in) Is There Anything Blacker Than A Black Cat?, wistful synth-heavy numbers like Dindy Super, a nostalgic lament for the simple pleasures of a cheap audio cassette tape and the filmic space-funk track, Green Beetle, Plate 31 that examines the chemistry of aphrodisiacs and marks the first love song ever composed by Regal Worm. Well, nothing actually. The story, which revolves around a 12th century Sufi poem, became less clear and less of a motivating factor as the albums continued. These are simply four sets of love songs, all of them beautifully sung and played, but very much inside the same southern jam rock/R&B wheelhouse that the band has always operated. Susan Tedeschi's voice is reason enough to listen to any Tedeschi Trucks Band recording but it's not clear that over two hours of music released over three months won't be received as a numbing avalanche. Given that the material on all these volumes is similar the whole way through, that fatigue sets in early with I Am The Moon IV. Farewell. Like the previous three volumes, the finale benefits from the full sound, good recording quality and instrumental variety generated by the 12-piece version of the band. Having five capable vocalists available, especially for a recording project of this size, can never be a bad thing. While the music may have been a secondary concern to the films they are meant to accompany, as well as templates for the live jams they will evolve into, easy-going blues tunes like "Last Night In The Rain" that Tedeschi nails vocally in clever stanzas ("Went down to the station/ To catch the morning train/ One ticket to lonely/ One ticket to Spain") are the band at their best. "Soul Sweet Song" is an amiable, bouncy, light R&B number. And "Where Are My Friends?"-written and sung by vocalist/guitarist Mike Mattison-has a chorus line ("At the heart of the matter") that is one of the entire project's most memorable and connected moments. Consistency and high-quality delivery have earned the band around Piet Sielck a large and loyal fanbase. In 2017, the band started a special project: Their first five studio albums were no longer available at that time (but the band could not simply re-release them for legal reasons), so they decided to re-record some highlight tracks of the Noise Records years. The result, Reforged - Riding On Fire, was received positively throughout and made the fans ask for more. The history of Iron Savior is full of highlights, and there are many more gems that were not selected for a re-recording at that time due to capacity reasons. Thus it quickly became clear: "Reforged" goes into the second round, and Reforged - Ironbound (Vol. 2) will be coming out on August 2022, via AFM Records! "This time we picked 23 songs, which is significantly more than the first "Reforged" part had", says bandleader Piet Sielck. "The very positive response to "Reforged - Riding On Fire" made us consider a second part. Through direct fan feedback, we then also became aware of how many songs were still slumbering there, which deserved to be suggested for a remake." The 23 tracks of the new double album Reforged - Ironbound (Vol. 2) represent a real bastion, both quantitatively and qualitatively. "I am very satisfied with the result," Sielck states. "It's always up to the fans out there to evaluate something like this, but in my opinion, our second part of "Reforged" surpasses its predecessor. It was great fun to approach the songs again." Piet adds with a smile: "I'm especially happy that both Jan and Piesel as well as Kai (Hansen) were able to play or sing their original parts. King stated, "I was going through a lot during the album with addictions, breakups, and addictions because of breakups. I was overindulging in everything." King added, "It's not a big secret to my friends. I was in a real rough place for a while. I was trying to process the death of family members and I was on the wrong medications." Despite the challenging personal circumstances, King has made his most accomplished work to date. One of his biggest fans, Dan Auerbach, exclaimed. "Music runs so deep in Marcus's blood he might not even realize how born to do this he is. He's the real deal. Marcus has Southern Soul as part of his foundation. Even before the release of their captivating debut, The Gereg, the genre-smashing Mongolians had whipped the internet into a frenzy, notching up tens of millions of streams across YouTube and social media. It was anything but a gimmick. Blending rock and metal elements with traditional Mongolian instruments and the art of throat singing, they conjured an enthralling sound rooted in fist-raising chants and rampaging tempos that felt like a marauding horde thundering across the steppe. That they struck such a resonant chord throughout the global metal community, while singing exclusively in their native tongue, spoke to the intrinsic power of the music. At times they step entirely away from metal in favour of zippy, pop- oriented numbers like Triangle, Teach Me and Bii Biyelgee - a booming folk pop gem with a hip-swivelling spontaneity that will reduce crowds to a joyful, sweaty mess. There's even a stab at balladry in the form of Mother Nature - perhaps the only moment when understanding the lyrics might be critical to appreciating the track.
