Apparently, band mastermind Schottler suffered a number of issues over the years, culminating in the loss of significant funds. What Schottler didn't lose though, was his determination, which helps to better explain the chosen cover artwork that I initially derided. Instead of throwing in the towel, the vocalist and guitarist pulled together his long-time bandmates Casey Guest (bass), and JJ Tartagila (drums) to create more new music. Jones-penned "Born Under a Bad Sign," "Breaking Up Somebody's Home"), Muddy Waters ("Still a Fool"), Magic Sam ("Everything Gonna Be Alright"), Stevie Ray Vaughan ("House Is Rockin'"), Bo Diddley (the Willie Dixon-penned "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover"), Freddie King ("Boogie Man," "Palace of the King"), and B.B. King ("You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now"), all backed by an all-star band of drummer Chris Layton (Double Trouble), bassist Tony Franklin (the Firm), and keyboardist Riley Osbourn (Willie Nelson), and featuring a host of guest spots from the Rebirth Brass Band, Keb' Mo', Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Warren Haynes, and Robert Randolph, that make this release feel as much like an event as an album. Shepherd delivers blistering guitar leads, doesn't fuss over his vocals (admittedly his weakest musical component), and delivers a comfortable, warm, and perhaps wise return to where it all started. It was produced by Terry Manning and released in January 1985. Some of its songs are among Thorogood's best-known, including "I Drink Alone" and "Willie and the Hand Jive", the latter being his only single to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart. George Thorogood is forever consistent and Maverick is more of the blues/rock driving sound the journeyman guitarist is known for. John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" is what you expect from this crew while "Memphis, Tennessee" bursts at the seams with George's trademark slide and Hank Carter's saxophone. Recorded at the legendary Dimension Sound Studio in July of 1984 on the outskirts of Boston, the earthy sound catches all the band's primal energy from opener "Gear Jammer" to the wailing sax of "Long Gone." There are only four originals from Thorogood, the album chock full of Johnny Otis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others. It is territory that the group has covered on pretty much every previous record, but it's done with the artistic passion that makes it real. Although the songwriting is distressingly inconsistent, there are a number of wonderful moments on the record, particularly in the sighing "Angel Eyes" and the heartbroken "Dance Away." Nearly 25 years after the release of the band's groundbreaking Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, Pierce delivers an album opener that sounds awfully familiar: Like the title track of that old record, "Always Together With You" starts out with Pierce being tuned in as if from some distant planet, singing a sweet and simple melody. But then, wow, suddenly there is so much going on: Wall of Sound-style girl group vocals, percussion crashing like a killer ocean wave, enveloping guitars. It's like being embraced and held in place as the world spins around you. It's also incredibly romantic, with Pierce literally promising the moon: "If you want a silver moon, I would be a silver moon for you/ If you want a unicorn, I would be a unicorn for you." (Also see: a shooting star, rocket ship, galaxies and the whole universe.) "The Mainline Song" barrels in with a train's call and rolls at a vibrant, rushing pace, harmonica honking before Pierce slides in near the end to sweetly ask: "I wanted to know if you wanted to go to the city tonight?" "Best Thing You Never Had (The D Song)" travels a remarkable evolution, from a stripped-back bluesy stomp to a '60s-ish garage-psych bruiser-and then drunken, New Orleans-style horns join the part. (Those horns are just as exciting on "The A Song (Laid in Your Arms).") Alt-country singer Nikki Lane harmonizes with Pierce on countrified love song "Crazy," which features weeping pedal steel and a gospel choir that, unlike recent Spiritualized records, sounds more homegrown tent revival than raise-it-to-the-heavens cathedral music. "Let It Bleed (For Iggy)" veers between languid verses and a chorus so majestic it's almost glam, thanks to bright horns and the bass pulling like an undertow. The whole thing ends in the kind of 10-minute hypnosis that usually comes from drugs or religious rapture. Ingredients for "I'm Coming Home Again" include droning blues, chugging bass, a Stonesy choir, jazz horn skronk, searing guitar, swooning strings and a chiming bell. At its best, the album is effortlessly suave and charming -- "Over You" is one of their greatest singles, and "Oh Yeah" is nearly as persuasive -- but much of the record is devoted to ill-formed, stylish lounge-pop. In particular, the reliance on reworked covers of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Eight Miles High" is distressing, not only because it signals a lack of imagination, but also because it suggests that Flesh + Blood is simply a lesser solo effort from Bryan Ferry. And even the handful of undeniably strong moments can't erase the feeling that Roxy Music were beginning to run out of ideas. Dopamine is the band's first double set. 'We didn't set out to make a double album," says guitarist Luke Morley. "We're validated and liked on social media, which releases the dopamine - and so we get addicted to it.
