Over the next 13 years, he entertained his esoteric interests -- he collaborated on a classical album, he rearranged his old tunes for an orchestra, he reunited the Police, he wrote a musical -- before he returned to pop/rock with 2016's 57th & 9th. The fact that he named this comeback album after the intersection he crossed on his way to the studio speaks to the workmanlike aspect of 57th & 9th: there is no grand concept, no unifying aesthetic -- it's merely a collection of pop songs. This is hardly a bad thing. Sting has often undervalued his skills as a craftsman, so hearing him deliver ten sharply crafted songs is appealing. Playing with a studio band featuring drummer Josh Freese and guitarist Lyle Workman, Sting manages to work up a head of steam on occasion -- "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" opens the album with an insistent pulse, "Petrol Head" evokes memories of "Synchronicity II" -- but he spends as much time delivering tunes with a delicate touch. Much of the last half of the record is devoted to introspection, but unlike the fussy Sacred Love, the ballads here benefit from a brighter, open production and a singer/songwriter who feels invested in sculpting his melodies with the same care that he gives his lyrics. Now under the steady hand of producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Cranberries, Blur), Hynde and her touring band of 15 years have hatched an album that will especially resonate with fans of the band's early work. With original drummer Martin Chambers aboard, this also feels and sounds like the first true "band" album in a very long time-a throwback move where Hynde, still in good voice, again sounds emotionally engaged. Energized by a solid batch of co-writes between Hynde and touring guitarist James Walbourne, Hate for Sale opens with the snarling title track that both savages an ex-lover, and according to Hynde, serves as a tribute to punk outfit The Damned, whose members she once jammed with just before they became a band. Single "The Buzz," an immediately recognizable return to a vintage Pretenders sound, has changes and rhythms similar to "Kid" from the band's 1980 eponymous debut album. The reasonably credible reggae of "Lightning Man" is another tribute, this time to Richard Swift, a chief mover behind Alone. And a revved up rockabillyized Bo Diddley beat gives "Didn't Want to Be This Lonely" a spirited snap. And frontman Mr. Lordi admits that he was had originally hoped to release 10 new albums, only to have that idea vetoed by the Finnish group's record label. Titled 'Lordiversity', the box set will be available as seven CDs, or seven vinyl records. Each album will see the former Eurovision-winninig Finns tackle a different genre: hard rock, disco, progressive rock, heavy metal, AOR, thrash/speed and industrial metal. The albums will be standalone available, and after 'Superflytrap', now it's the time for another standalone volume; "Abracadaver". Here Lordi makes their take on '90s-style metal. From its eccentric, spaghetti western-style intro to the face-ripping pure metal of songs like "Devilium" and "Beast Of Both Worlds", Lordi's mastery of all metallic trades is on full display. At times as heavy as prime Pantera, and full of "Painkiller"-era PRIEST-isms, it's a non-stop riot of razor riffs, gonzoid choruses and unexpected twists. We find bursts of everything from symphonic keyboards (on the grandiose but gritty "Evil") to swaggering, Southern-fried sludge riffs (the deeply gnarly "Acid Bleeding Eyes"). LORDI have never been a band for everyone, and this seven-album monstrosity is unlikely to win them many new converts, but if you do have that day to spare and really, really need cheering up, "Lordiversity" will absolutely provide. Their debut album, 'In My Dreams', released on 10th December. Selboskar is an experienced musician who debuted with the band Da Vinci, with whom he made two acclaimed albums, 'Da Vinci' (1987) and 'Back In Business' (1989) for Polygram. The band ceased touring in 1992 and went on a prolonged hiatus, which only ended in 2017 with the release of the comeback album 'Ambition Rocks'. Selboskar had meanwhile remained busy working with Trine Rein, Street Legal and Eidsivating before deciding to start ZELBO as a solo project. He subsequently enlisted the services of longtime friend and guitarist Ken Ingwersen, who had started his own career in the 80's working with Evenrude, followed by Rags, Street Legal and a lengthy tenure with Ken Hensley's (Uriah Heep) band. Singer Frode Vassel and drummer Sturla Nøstvik complete the line-up. 'In My Dreams' is a debut album of the highest order. Mercury X's music and sound takes inspiration from the early '80s progressive metal bands as well as modern metal. Mercury X originally formed in 2013 in Norrtälje, outside of Stockholm. Guitarist/lead vocalist/violinist Martin Björklund, bassist Alfonso Flores, guitarist Jonas Vedin, and drummer/lead vocalist Denis Diaz met for the first time when they were studying music together in high school. They soon formed a band together, but eventually everyone followed their course of studies in different cities. When they all came back home, they decided to start a band again and thus formed Mercury X. Since then, the band has made two albums, both released independently. More recently, they started writing an epic twenty minute long song called 'Imprisoned,' which was originally supposed to be a stand-alone EP release. After it was written, they decided to record an additional four songs and make a proper (for progressive metal) full length album. As the album neared completion, they started to realize that it was a big step up from their previous releases, both in musical and songwriting quality in general, so they started to shop themselves around for a record deal. Well, here's a reminder -- they're a band that caused a minor stir in the early '90s when they took Led Zeppelin classics, added a dash of reggae, and were fronted by an Elvis Presley impersonator (who alternated between reciting Zeppelin and Elvis lyrics). It was perhaps only a matter of time until another group came along that mashed together two other renowned rock acts, and while Zeppelin and Elvis aren't exactly universes apart musically, the Beatles and Metallica are -- which makes the emergence of Beatallica much more of a curiosity. And somehow the band (whose members go by such colorful nom de plumes as Jaymz Lennfield, Grg Hammettson, Kliff McBurtney, and Ringo Larz) mixes and matches Beatles and Metallica riffs/lyrics pretty flawlessly -- as evidenced throughout 2007's Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band. First off, it must be stated that it is absolutely eerie how much Lennfield is able to replicate James Hetfield's manly bark (it really does sound as if it's the actual Metallica singer throughout). Some of the tracks are a bit silly -- such as "A Garage Dayz Nite" and "Ktulu (He's So Heavy)" -- but you have to give the quartet credit for how they craftily merge "Enter Sandman" and "Taxman" together, as..."Sandman." The next time you're going to party with headbanging pals, put on Sgt. This time they've taken "All You Need Is Love" and replaced the lyrics with metal-themed flair to convert lines like "nothing you can see that can't be shown" to "nothin' you can smash that can't be smashed" in a dead-on James Hetfield imitation. The concept gets heavier, as they encapsulate the Fab Four's messages of world unity by performing the same song in 13 different versions: English, Portuguese, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian, Mexican Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Russian, and South Korean. In order to embark on this lofty mission, the band enlisted the help of international Beatallibangers (code for Beatallica fans) to translate the lyrics into their respective languages and then transcribe the song phonetically so lead singer Jaymz Lennfield would be able to pronounce them accurately. From there, Lennfield and studio engineer Flemball Rasmartin faced the unruly task of trying to fit these rough translations, that were often much longer than the originals, into the spacing of the chord progressions. Also, to clever it up a bit, different instrumental bits were created for each track to replace the French National Anthem that introduced the original version, guitar lines were changed from take to take, and differing snippets of random chatter (babbling something about bloodstained sheets) were pasted on the endings. Of course, this all adds up to a painstaking amount of work dedicated to something that will doubtfully appeal to very many people, even if they're die-hard fans. Since nearly all of these songs were never issued domestically, the B-side/rarity collection Pisces Iscariot was issued alongside their first long-form home video, Vieuphoria. The collection proved to be a feast for fans -- it's inexplicable why such exceptional rockers ("Plume," "Hello Kitty Kat," "Frail and Bedazzled," "Blue") and ballads ("Obscured," "La Dolly Vita") weren't featured on albums.
