Sting seemed to tire of pop songs sometime early in the 21st century, wandering away from the format after 2003's well-mannered Sacred Love. Over the next 13 years, he entertained his esoteric interests -- he collaborated on a classical album, he rearranged his old tunes for an orchestra, he reunited the Police, he wrote a musical -- before he returned to pop/rock with 2016's 57th & 9th. The fact that he named this comeback album after the intersection he crossed on his way to the studio speaks to the workmanlike aspect of 57th & 9th: there is no grand concept, no unifying aesthetic -- it's merely a collection of pop songs. This is hardly a bad thing. Sting has often undervalued his skills as a craftsman, so hearing him deliver ten sharply crafted songs is appealing. Playing with a studio band featuring drummer Josh Freese and guitarist Lyle Workman, Sting manages to work up a head of steam on occasion -- "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" opens the album with an insistent pulse, "Petrol Head" evokes memories of "Synchronicity II" -- but he spends as much time delivering tunes with a delicate touch. Much of the last half of the record is devoted to introspection, but unlike the fussy Sacred Love, the ballads here benefit from a brighter, open production and a singer/songwriter who feels invested in sculpting his melodies with the same care that he gives his lyrics. Sting sifts through familiar territory with songs of protest sitting alongside songs of yearning and love, and it all adds up to record that's simultaneously unassuming and revealing: through its modest nature, 57th & 9th stands as a testament to Sting's inherent gifts as a songwriter and record-maker.

"Too old to know better/ too young for her age," Chrissie Hynde sings, flashing by a mirror in the slow soul music sway of "You Can't Hurt a Fool" from Hate For SaleAlone, produced by by Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, and featuring the musicians from his band The Arcs emphasized that point. Now under the steady hand of producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Cranberries, Blur), Hynde and her touring band of 15 years have hatched an album that will especially resonate with fans of the band's early work. With original drummer Martin Chambers aboard, this also feels and sounds like the first true "band" album in a very long time-a throwback move where Hynde, still in good voice, again sounds emotionally engaged. Energized by a solid batch of co-writes between Hynde and touring guitarist James Walbourne, Hate for Sale opens with the snarling title track that both savages an ex-lover, and according to Hynde, serves as a tribute to punk outfit The Damned, whose members she once jammed with just before they became a band. Single "The Buzz," an immediately recognizable return to a vintage Pretenders sound, has changes and rhythms similar to "Kid" from the band's 1980 eponymous debut album. The reasonably credible reggae of "Lightning Man" is another tribute, this time to Richard Swift, a chief mover behind Alone. And a revved up rockabillyized Bo Diddley beat gives "Didn't Want to Be This Lonely" a spirited snap. Forty years on, Chrissie's back with the band. © Robert Baird/Qobuz

Meanwhile, the 'Sex Bomb' hitmaker recently admitted he feels for musicians just starting out, who haven't been able to play concerts amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tom insisted nothing compares to the feeling of playing to a live audience, and said it must be so "stifling" for young aspiring artists who have had the opportunity to perform to a crowd taken from them during the global health crisis.

He said: "I actually feel sorry more for young people who are trying to start off and get some experience from doing live shows. It's all very well being in your front room making videos and then getting straight on to television - like sometimes it happens on 'The Voice', where they've never been onstage before. So this COVID thing, it's really stifling singers and bands who want to get out there, and get some experience, and get the feedback from the people. And they can't get that at the moment.

"I know what that feels like. At least I know what I'm missing . but some of these kids don't know yet. They haven't had the opportunity to experience it."
