Description: At the start of 1791, when Franz Joseph Haydn arrived in England, he was already the most famous composer in Europe, and had been for a few years. It seemed obvious, then, that a suggestion would be made for Haydn to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Oxford University (English composer and music historian Charles Burney put forth that suggestion). But that degree required the candidate to prove his skill in composition. One of the things Haydn did to prove he was worthy was conduct a concert at Oxford University that July which featured his Symphony No. 92 – it earned him the degree, and the symphony would later be nicknamed the "Oxford" symphony.

Description: An architectural gem is the venue for this European Concert: the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, one of the few originally preserved theatrical buildings of the Baroque. Paavo Järvi, who has caused a sensation particularly for his interpretations of Beethoven, conducts the composer’s Fourth Symphony, and of course Richard Wagner could not be missed out in a Bayreuth concert either. The soloist in his Wesendonck Lieder is Eva-Maria Westbroek.

Description: One of the big events of 2017 was the opening of the Hamburg Philharmonie. Krzysztof Urbański and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra gave inaugural concerts there that made a lasting impact on audiences and critics alike. On this occasion, the Polish conductor chose to record one of the works closest to his heart, The Rite of Spring: "Stravinsky invented a new language. For me, The Rite is not a score, but a painting: on each page, I see Matisse, Gauguin, the Fauve painters ... It’s an explosion of colours, emotions, and surprises too: if you don’t know the piece, you never know what’s going to happen. It’s so suggestive that you don’t need to do all that much with the orchestra, the magic is written into the music. ... When I conduct The Rite, I don’t think: the music penetrates your backbone, it’s inside you ... It’s a ballet, and perhaps it’s because I was a dancer when I was younger that I can’t control my body when I hear and conduct this piece. It’s a mystical experience for me!" The audio recording was made in sessions in the brand new Philharmonie and the Blu-Ray that accompanies the CD includes the film of the concert given in February 2017 in this superb building designed by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron.

Description: The founding of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the first of May in 1882, is annually celebrated in an European city of cultural significance. In 2015 the EUROPAKONZERT takes place for the second time after 2004 in Athens, with Leonidas Kavakos joining the Berliner Philharmoniker for the Sibelius Violin Concerto and Bach’s “Largo” from Sonato No. 3. The concert was a smash hit, stunning the audience on site in Athens.The soloist on this recording, Leonidas Kavakos won the ECHO Klassik Award in 2013 as ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’.

La Passion selon Marc. Une Passion après Auschwitz (The Passion According to Mark. A Passion after Auschwitz), premiered in April 2017. The project was commissioned to French composer Michaël Levinas by the Swiss association «Musique pour un temps présent», as part of the events commemorating the 500th anniversary of Luther’s reform. Description: This wonderful arrangement was transcribed by Merlin Patterson in 1997/98. Before then, there was no complete transcript of The Planets suite that existed for concert band. Holst had personally arranged but not transcribed Mars and Jupiter for concert band ensemble, nor had he transcribed any of the other movements in the suite for a concert band ensemble. This recording by the U.S. Marine Band is special because it’s a complete and true transcription of the original suite. Patterson has taken everything from that orchestral suite, changing or omitting nothing, and presenting it in its original key.

Description: Recorded in the heart of the breathtaking Bavarian Alps at the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle. Conceived and created by Sarah along with Anthony Van Laast (Mamma Mia, Beauty and the Beast), and Frank Peterson, this cinematic performance is a unique hybrid of a musical film and a large-scale concert production. Staged in Ludwig II’s Festspielhaus, Sarah is accompanied by her band, the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra, a 50-voice choir and the Ludwig Ensemble of dancers. Special guest performers include Yoshiki, Vincent Niclo, Mario Frangoulis, and Narcis. The presentation is staged in two Acts, embracing some of Sarah’s most beloved works as well as songs from Sarah’s new album HYMN, performed for the very first time; the intoxicating Sky And Sand, Miracle – the epic collaboration with Japanese superstar, Yoshiki – and the tour de force that is Sogni, on which Sarah is joined by French tenor Vincent Niclo. Sarah also performs a solo rendition of her classic Time to Say Goodbye, with English lyrics. Hymn – Sarah Brightman In Concert perfectly evokes the magic of this dramatic Bavarian setting with all the glamour and spectacle of an extraordinary stage show.

Description: Since the summer of 1994, the biggest world stars of the classical music meet every year at the Verbier Festival for young, hopeful young talents. During the 17 days of the festival workshops are held in the picturesque winter sports resort and numerous free concerts are given against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the festival, Valery Gergiev and Gábor Takács-Nagy conducted a festival concert on July 25, 2018, which was peppered with the who-is-who of the current classical music scene. Thomas Quasthoff, Martin Fröst, Kristóf Baráti, Lisa Batiashvili, Renaud Capuçon, Vilde Frang, Ilya Gringolts, Daniel Lozakovich, Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Pinchas Zukerman, Gérard Caussé, Tabea Zimmermann, Mischa Maisky, Edgar Moreau, Sergei Babayan, Evgeny Kissin Denis Kozhukhin, Mikhail Pletnev, András Schiff, Rodion Shchedrin, Daniil Trifonov and Yuja Wang with works by Bach, Brahms, Dvoák, Lutos awski, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Rossini and Johann Strauss. The memorable evening with its surprising program and captivating performances by a total of 36 world stars can now be enjoyed in the best picture and sound quality at home.
