About: Recorded live at St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, 23 June 2013. The Mass in B Minor, Bach's last completed vocal work as well as the climax of his creativity, reveals the overwhelming wealth of his compositional skills. In the history of music it ranks highly, as the "Montblanc of church music" (Franz Liszt) composed during Bach's time as cantor at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Performed in this important composer's domain, the Mass in B Minor casted a spell over its listeners as the crowning glory of the Leipzig Bach Festival in 2013: Under the direction of Bach's successor Georg Christoph Biller, the St. Thomas Boys Choir and an outstanding soloist quintet perform with the prestigious Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, playing on authentic period instruments.

About: Richard Srauss's Macbeth receives a fine, predictably classy performance from the Dutch orchestra, with Nelsons underlining the granitic power of its narrative effectively and bringing especial allure to the characterization of Lady Macbeth.
Strauss’s great tone-poem ‘after Nietzsche’ is, of course, all about ideas. There’s definitely a welcome flexibility and lack of grandstanding. There’s undeniable added excitement in watching the performance, too. Nelsons’s podium manner is relaxed and warm, characteristics that seep through into the playing, while the camera direction is excellent and cannily in tune with the musical rhythms.
Till Eulenspiegel gains perhaps even more from being watched, and the performance here is a delight – mischievous, light on its feet and played with impeccable virtuosity. With excellent sound and picture quality, this disc is highly recommended.
Here are three distinguished and exciting Strauss performances by an orchestra that has the music in their blood under the direction of a man who is fast establishing a reputation as a leading interpreter of this composer’s music. The presentation is worthy of the playing: the camera-work is first rate, as is the sound.

About: Mit diesem 7. Sinfoniekonzert unter Maestro Zubin Mehta und dem Bariton Thomas Quasthoff leitete die Staatskapelle Dresden ihre Mahler-Feier zum 150. Geburtstag des Komponisten im Jahr 2010 ein.
Mehta zählt seit Jahren zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten der internationalen Musikwelt. Bereits mit 25 Jahren hatte er die Berliner und Wiener Philharmoniker wie auch das Israel Philharmonic Orchestra dirigiert. Seit 1994 ist er eng der Staatskapelle Dresden verbunden. Thomas Quasthoff ist einer der herausragenden und gleichzeitig vielseitigsten Sänger unserer Zeit. Allein drei seiner CD-Einspielungen wurden mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnet, was bisher keinem anderen deutschen Künstler gelang.
Neben den Kindertotenliedern spielte die Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden auch „Sechs Stücke für Orchester“ op. 6 von Anton Webern (1883-1945). Ein vibrierender Orgelpunkt mit aufsteigender Trompetenfanfare - so kann man den Beginn der Tondichtung "Also sprach Zarathustra" von Richard Strauss beschreiben, die zum Abschluss des Konzertes auf dem Programm stand.
