Mike & The Mechanics were formed in 1985 by Mike Rutherford as a separate project to run alongside his work with Genesis. They released their eponymous debut album the same year featuring vocals from both Paul Carrack (Ace) and Paul Young (Sad Cafe) and had an immediate hit with Silent Running. This was followed by a string of further hit singles and albums including The Living Years , a US No.1 single that remains one of the most played songs of all time on FM radio. In 2004 the band reunited for the first time since the sad death of Paul Young in 2000. With Paul Carrack now handling all the lead vocals they went out on the road across Europe, culminating in this outstanding performance at London s Shepherds Bush Empire. The show contains all their greatest hits and is now presented on Blu-ray for the first time.

About: Mark Knopfler takes his former Dire Straits band mate John Illsley on a journey to discover the six guitars that defined his sound and music

It begins in the music shops in Central Arcade in Newcastle, where Knopfler spent many a childhood hour staring longingly through the shop window at a Fender Stratocaster. There, Knopfler unveils his first-ever guitar, a Höfner V2 that cost his dad £50 in 1964.

Unable to afford an amp, Knopfler recalls blowing up several family radios before he landed a job as reporter and moved to Leeds in 1969. Heading to nearby Robin Hood's Bay, Knopfler introduces Illsley to blues artist Steve Phillips, with whom he used to regularly jam and who sold Knopfler his second guitar, a louder and more garish National that would be made famous by the cover of the Dire Straits' fifth album Brothers in Arms.

As Knopfler moved to London in 1973 and formed Dire Straits, he splashed out on the Fender Stratocaster he had wanted since his school days. He and Illsley reminisce about the early days of Dire Straits as they visit the house that was originally Pathway Studios where they, along with Elvis Costello, Madness and The Squeeze, put down tracks. They recall gigs they played on the path outside their flat in Deptford as well as the first time one of their songs was played on the radio - an event they missed because they were moving furniture.

As Dire Straits' success grew, so did Knopfler's guitar collection. Next he turned to the Gibson Les Paul to perfect his iconic style, used on hits including Money For Nothing as well as album Brothers in Arms. As Knopfler grew tired of countless guitar changes per concert, he met Rudy Pensa, a luthier and guitar shop owner in New York. In his famous store on 48th Street, Knopfler recalls how they designed a new guitar with a wider range of sounds on a napkin in a cafe in 1980: The Pensa MK1.

Finally, the most recent chapter in Knopfler's journey as a guitarist takes him and Illsley to the workshop of John Monteleone. He crafted Knopfler's Monteleone Isabella in 2008, a guitar Knopfler considered so exquisite, he made it the subject of one of his songs.

We are proud to announce the release of 'Summer Shall Not Fade - Live At Loreley', a Blu-ray and double CD set of the band's legendary performance at the Night Of The Prog festival on 13th July 2018 at Loreley in Germany.

The thirteen song set runs to over two hours. It includes classic material from English Electric, Folklore and Grimspound studio albums, and fan favourite deep cuts Kingmaker and Summer's Lease. The performance features the full Big Big Train live band, including the late David Longdon, plus a five-piece brass section and is made even more remarkable by the fact that it was only the band's eighth live show in this incarnation.

Over the following years, the show has taken on an almost mythical reputation among the band's fans, aka The Passengers, as one of the best the band ever performed.

Gregory Spawton says of the show: "Loreley was a real coming of age experience for Big Big Train as a live band. The stars aligned perfectly for us. It was a truly magical night with the band performing brilliantly and a wonderfully welcoming audience as they and we enjoyed the glorious outdoor setting." Gregory's sentiments are shared by drummer Nick D'Virgilio: "I have been blessed to play some amazing shows with Tears For Fears, Cirque du Soleil, Spock's Beard and many others during my career. But the BBT show at Loreley was off the charts. It's hard to believe that this was only our eighth performance together. Every second was simply awesome."

The show features the late David Longdon on vocals and flute. Rikard Sjöblom, the band's guitarist and keyboard player, remembers David's performance well: "David was an absolute star, his vocal performance and the way he commanded the stage were both extraordinary. Loreley is an amazing record of our precious time together with him. The show is one of the highlights of my life."

The audio for Summer Shall Not Fade has been mixed in both 5.1 and stereo by Big Big Train's resident sound engineer, Rob Aubrey.
