Produced by Michael Schenker and Michael Voss, the new album marks the 50th anniversary of Schenker's era with UFO, which lasted from 1972 to 1978. As a teenager touring the world, Michael Schenker became a driving force behind some of UFO's most popular tracks, such as 'Doctor Doctor', 'Rock Bottom' and 'Only You Can Rock Me'. These years saw the release of the UFO albums 'Phenomenon', 'Force It', 'No Heavy Petting', 'Lights Out', 'Obsession' and the groundbreaking live album 'Strangers in the Night', all of which contributed significantly to the genre.

In 'My Years with UFO', Michael Schenker presents 11 of UFO's greatest hits from this era with an impressive line-up of guest stars. Schenker is joined on this journey by Derek Sherinian on keys, Brian Tichy on drums and Barry Sparks on bass.

The list of celebrity guest artists includes Axl Rose, Slash, Kai Hansen, Roger Glover, Joey Tempest, Biff Byford, Jeff Scott Soto, John Norum, Dee Snider, Joel Hoekstra, Joe Lynn Turner, Carmine Appice, Adrian Vandenberg, Michael Voss, Stephen Pearcy and Erik Grönwall.

For most of M6, Mike + the Mechanics play it fairly safe, offering strongly melodic adult contemporary material with excellent performances. It's the rare track, however, that is truly captivating. The band continues to experiment with electronica influences, though, and it is on those tracks, the anthems "Now That You've Gone" and "When I Get Over You," where the group offers something innovative to fans of its music. In fact, "When I Get Over You" hardly sounds like Mike + the Mechanics at all, and more like modern releases from the likes of Sting and Roxette, with a haunting string arrangement played over pulsating beats and keyboard effects. The rest of M6 sounds similar to Beggar on a Beach of Gold, with prominent rhythm guitars and emotional vocals. While the songwriting is not as strong as on that album, the band continues to show interest in nice production touches such as the crackling record background to "My Little Island."

It's hard not to interpret the "fighting my way back" chorus of the title track on Thin Lizzy's fifth album as the band's way of bouncing back from the uncommonly subdued Night Life. If that record was smooth and relaxed, Fighting is a tense, coiled, vicious rock & roll album, as hard as Vagabonds's toughest moments but more accomplished, the sound of a band truly coming into its own. There are two key forces at work. First, there's the integration of guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, who get to unleash furious playing on every track here. It's hard not to thrill at their harmonizing twin-lead interplay, which is enough to excuse the rather pedestrian nature of their original tunes here (Robertson penned the boogie "Silver Dollar," Gorham the closer "Ballad of a Hard Man"). That's especially true because of the other development here: the full flourishing of Phil Lynott as a rock & roll poet. Whether he's writing hard-charging rockers like "Wild One," jazzy Springsteen-isms of "For Those Who Love to Live" or combining both on "Freedom Song," his songs manage to be both mythic and commonplace, and when delivered by the vital, visceral lineup he has here, they're invigorating. Strangely enough, that leap forward as a writer is somewhat overshadowed by a triumph of the band, in how they completely steal Bob Seger's "Rosalie" turning it into their own anthem, but that again is a testament to the strength of this incarnation of Thin Lizzy, who truly begin their classic era with this dynamic LP.
