Mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd (In Flames, Hammerfall, Dimmu Borgir) at Studio Fredman. "Where Stories End" is a master piece of melodic progressive metal, and will not leave any fans of the band or the genre disappointed. Darkwater was formed late 2003 in the western parts of Sweden. During the first years of existence they only did a few selected shows in Sweden while working on the material for their debut album. During summer and fall 2006, Darkwater recorded and mixed the album, and early 2007 a deal was inked with the Swedish label Ulterium Records. "Calling the earth to witness" was released in May 2007 and received extremely good reviews from all around the world. Darkwater's perfect blend of melodic and progressive metal was something the scene was craving for, and while taking inspiration from bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater and Evergrey, Darkwater have for sure created a sound of their own. In May 2008 Darkwater recorded and released a music video for the track "The play II" and in June they went did their first show in the US, at the Bay Area Rock Fest together with Liquid Tension Experiment, Jeff Scott Soto among others. During 2009 the band parted ways with their bass player Karl Wassholm, and stepping in as bass player for the band is Simon Andersson [ex. Pain of Salvation]. In April 2010 Darkwater started to record their new album "Where stories end". The famous Studio Fredman was chosen for the mix and mastering of the album, and during summer the album was completed. The band also recorded a music video for the opening track of the album "Breathe". Like a miracle Michael Schenker returns to Japan with his past original singers from the '80's to celebrate the Michael Schenker Fest with Barden, Bonnet and McAuley at the amazing Tokyo International Forum. 5000 fans witnessed an anthology moment of quintessential hard rock music of the highest calibre. It's a miracle that after all these years, something like this took place with the original band members of MSG. Being able to go back to those days and celebrate the music is an exciting experience for the band, as well as for old and new fans. To being able to re-experience, and for the new audience to get a feel of what it was like, is incredibly enjoyable. For Michael Schenker it was an amazing feeling to have all of his MSG Family from the '80's performing together and especially with Graham Bonnet, who he never got to play any concerts after their Assault Attack album that was originally released in 1982. Only that last tune, in greatly altered form, appears on this compilation that focuses on Christine McVie's two solo albums, Christine McVie (1984) and especially, In The Meantime (2004). The decision not to include anything from her first band Chicken Shack's two albums, her self-titled solo debut, or any of her Fleetwood Mac material outside of the title track keeps this from being a more complete picture of her singing, piano playing and often breathtaking songwriting. Licensing challenges are likely culprits for the lack of Fleetwood Mac material, but the omission of her biggest solo hit, the very Mac-esque "Got a Hold on Me" from her debut (which featured the talents of Lindsey Buckingham, Steve Winwood and Steve Ferrone) is mystifying. What's here though has been fully remixed by producer Glyn Johns (The Rolling Stones, The Beatles) who tinkered with levels and moved instruments around in the mix without changing the originals in hugely obvious ways. This collection also contains two unreleased tracks-the bouncy guitar-led "Slow Down," which was originally written and recorded for the 1985 film American Flyers but went unused, and the heartbreak ballad "All You Gotta Do," a duet McVie wrote and recorded with the late George Hawkins (whose bass is heard on all but one of the album's songs). Originally left unfinished, "All You Gotta Do" was completed by adding Ricky Peterson on organ and Glyn Johns' son, Ethan on drums and guitar. Most interesting is the orchestral version of "Songbird" where the brilliantly talented arranger and composer Vince Mendoza builds a lush string setting around McVie's original vocals from the Rumours session to give the song an even more ethereal, slightly less lonely feel than the original. Six years have passed since Spektor's last album, and given that she was also pregnant while recording this new one, it was almost a sure thing that her pandemic album was going to be a powerful ringer. Even measured against her previous catalog of uniformly appealing, inventive albums, Home, before and after is bursting with creative energies. Opening with alternating notes on piano, "Loveology" is Spektor at her playful, melodic best. The same holds true for the rhythmic echo pop of "SugarMan" where she coos the wonderful second couplet: "I'm not your doll/ I'm not your pet/ But I'm not my own/ Ever since we met." The Bronx, New York-raised Spektor salutes her hometown in the album's first single, "Becoming All Alone," which settles into an engaging mid-tempo groove, swinging between unadorned piano and voice and sweeping string/horn/synth orchestrations with backing vocals from her husband Jack Dishel. The urgent "Up the Mountain" gallops along over undulating strings, slowing near the middle, before revealing the key verse: "On the mountain there's a forest/ In the forest there's a garden/ In the garden there's a flower/ In the flower there's a nectar/ In the nectar there's an answer /In that answer there's another." Three lines in "Raindrops" sum up her powers of observation: "Round each corner there's a chance/ People searching glance to glance/ Moving about real fast like insects and fish when they're scared." It's clear that Spektor's songwriting has been super-charged in the years since her last record, nowhere more evident than in the 8-minute plus mini-symphony-opera-performance piece, "Spacetime Fairytale." Backed by a lush, momentous orchestral arrangement from Jherek Bischoff, Spektor plays piano and sings that while there's no such thing as time "This world began outside of time/ Some days it's yours, some days it's mine/ Some days it's cruel, some days it's kind/ It just can't stay the same." Before a percussive tap dance interlude by Caleb Teicher, she returns to a more intimate reflection on time, "My mind is full of melodies/ They search for homes inside of me/ Like begging, pleading refugees/ But I can't find the time." Producer John Congleton, who is making a specialty of working with talented female singer-songwriters (Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, St. Vincent), adds structure, tempos and a weighty synth presence to everything. He also functions as the band playing bass, synths, keyboards, drums, percussion, and drum programming. With Congleton and Ariel Shafir engineering, the album has a spacious feel while retaining Spektor's sonic signature of a close-miked voice. String and horn arrangements, played by FAME'S Skopje Studio Orchestra, are handled by the hugely talented Bischoff, who has written commissions for Kronos Quartet as well as original compositions for film, TV, and the stage.
