Boasting front-to-back depth, concert-hall-level separation, realistic presence, and bang-on accuracy, Mobile Fidelity's SACD of Eye in the Sky illustrates the lasting importance of perfectionist-minded engineering and recording techniques. Few works possess such a mesmerizing blend of reference-setting sonics and commercial acumen, facets that helped earn the set a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album - and, more than 35 years after its release, a Grammy for Best Immersive Audio Album for its surround format. Parsons' track record - he sat behind the boards for the Beatles' Abbey Road and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon - speaks for itself. As do the performances throughout Eye in the Sky, which contains not a single dull moment.

Moving the overarching conceptual themes present on the group's other signature efforts to the background, Eye in the Sky uses a string of seamless melodies, hooks, and mood to draw and hold listeners' attention. It survives as Parsons' pop triumph, full of exquisite songwriting, dreamy emotions, and soft edges that parallel an underlying orchestral scope and prog-derived drama. For example, the string- and brass-laden "Silence and I" alone qualifies as a rhapsodic symphony. Credit for the music's craft, cohesiveness, and accessibility also falls to Parsons and Woolfson's knack for recruiting session pros that translate their visions with unquestioned emotion - particularly, the assembly of star vocalists that include Elmer Gantry ("Psychobabble"), former Zombie frontman Colin Blunstone ("Old and Wise"), and soul singer Lenny Zakatek ("You're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned" and "Step by Step").

As with all Parsons releases, the arrangements proverbially dot every "i" and cross every "t." Each note seems perfectly placed, every sequence painstakingly considered. Not to mention the narratives to the surveillance-obsessed title track and pulsing "Psychobabble" carry more weight in the 21st century than they did in the early stages of the Reagan/Thatcher era. And, just as it begins, with an appropriate flourish announcing the catchiness that follows, the platinum-selling Eye on the Sky finishes with fitting sentimentality in the form of a spiraling, saxophone-led ballad ("Old and Wise") that could easily fit on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

The Black Keys release a special tenth anniversary edition of their landmark seventh studio album El Camino via Nonesuch Records on November 5, 2021. El Camino (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) will be available in several formats including a Super Deluxe edition of five vinyl LPs or four CDs, featuring a remastered version of the original album, a previously unreleased Live in Portland, ME concert recording, a BBC Radio 1 Zane Lowe session from 2012, a 2011 Electro-Vox session, an extensive photo book, a limited-edition poster and lithograph, and a "new car scent" air freshener. A three-LP edition, which include the remastered album and the live recording, will also be available, as well as a special fan club version of the three-LP set.

Garbage reissue a 20th anniversary edition of their third studio album, Beautiful Garbage.

The album saw a slight departure for the band in terms of their sound and delivered four hit singles - 'Androgny', 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go)', 'Breaking Up The Gir'l and 'Shut Your Mouth'. None of them got higher than number 20 in the UK singles chart (Version 2.0 had delivered three top ten hits in Britain).

The three-CD edition of Beautiful Garbage offers 35 bonus tracks
The good news is that the band are reissuing the album as a three-CD deluxe edition (in a clamshell box) with a much more satisfying collection of bonus material when compared to the last two anniversary editions. The album itself is remastered and CD 2 offers B-sides and alternate versions with six previously unreleased selections. CD 3 is concerned with remixes and also features a couple of previously unreleased mixes.

Few rock & roll records rock as hard or with as much originality as the Pretenders' eponymous debut album. A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude. Although Chrissie Hynde establishes herself as a forceful and distinctively feminine songwriter, the record isn't a singer/songwriter's tour de force -- it's a rock & roll album, powered by a unique and aggressive band. Guitarist James Honeyman-Scott never plays conventional riffs or leads, and his phased, treated guitar gives new dimension to the pounding rhythms of "Precious," "Tattooed Love Boys," "Up the Neck," and "The Wait," as well as the more measured pop of "Kid," "Brass in Pocket," and "Mystery Achievement." He provides the perfect backing for Hynde and her tough, sexy swagger. Hynde doesn't fit into any conventional female rock stereotype, and neither do her songs, alternately displaying a steely exterior or a disarming emotional vulnerability. It's a deep, rewarding record, whose primary virtue is its sheer energy. Pretenders moves faster and harder than most rock records, delivering an endless series of melodies, hooks, and infectious rhythms in its 12 songs. Few albums, let alone debuts, are ever this astonishingly addictive.

Old Ways was recorded in Tennessee and Texas in 1985. For years, Neil Young dabbled with various aspects of country-styled music; but, on Old Ways he really turns it up and turns country into PURE Neil Young.

He rounded up some hot country music talent for this recording. Country outlaws Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings play a role on all but three of the tracks, either in duets with Neil or on electric and acoustic guitars. Janis Oliver-Gill and Kristine Oliver-Arnold (the Sweethearts of the Rodeo) and Marty Stuart provide featured back-up. Old Ways was produced by Neil Young, Ben Keith, David Briggs and Elliot Mazer. All the songs were written by Neil Young.

"In 1984, Geffen Records sued Neil Young on the grounds that he had submitted uncharacteristic, uncommercial records to the label. By the time a settlement had been reached, Young had been on the road with a country band called the International Harvesters for over a year and recorded a revamped version of Old Ways, a 1982 recording originally rejected by Geffen that was cut in the style of Harvest and Comes a Time, but with a stronger country leaning. Young depends heavily on friends, especially for vocals -- Waylon Jennings sings harmony on six out of the ten tracks, and one of the others is a duet with Willie Nelson. Though populated by cowboys and country references, Young's take on the genre is typically idiosyncratic, including a reworked version of his autobiography in "Get Back to the Country," a cover of the 1956 Gogi Grant hit "The Wayward Wind," and the uncategorizable "Misfits," which portrays astronauts watching Muhammad Ali fights on television in space. Old Ways is not a great Neil Young album and at the time of its release served to alienate him even further from his audience, but it has its moments." (William Ruhlmann, AMG)

25th-anniversary edition of R. E. M.'s tenth studio album, New Adventures in Hi-Fi. First released in 1996, the album was R. E. M.'s last studio recording with founding member Bill Berry who left amicably the following year. As the band's fifth collaboration with long-time producer Scott Litt (Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People and Monster), the album experiments with new sonic textures, filled with cinematic imagery, dissonant notes and haunting effects. The platinum-selling title includes the singles "Electrolite," "E-Bow the Letter" (featuring Patti Smith) and "Bittersweet Me," and represents R. E. M.'s longest studio release with a total run time of 65 minutes. New Adventures in Hi-Fi grew to cult status years after its release, with several press retrospectives--and band members themselves--ranking it among the top albums in R. E. M.'s recorded catalogue.

"Recorded during and immediately following R.E.M.'s disaster-prone Monster tour, New Adventures in Hi-Fi feels like it was recorded on the road. Not only are all of Michael Stipe's lyrics on the album about moving or travel, the sound is ragged and varied, pieced together from tapes recorded at shows, soundtracks, and studios, giving it a loose, careening charm. New Adventures has the same spirit of much of R.E.M.'s IRS records, but don't take the title of New Adventures in Hi-Fi lightly -- R.E.M. tries different textures and new studio tricks. "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us" opens the album with a rolling, vaguely hip-hop drum beat and slowly adds on jazzily dissonant piano. "E-Bow the Letter" starts out as an updated version of "Country Feedback," then it turns in on itself with layers of moaning guitar effects and Patti Smith's haunting backing vocals. Clocking in at seven minutes, "Leave" is the longest track R.E.M. has yet recorded and it's one of their strangest and best -- an affecting minor-key dirge with a howling, siren-like feedback loop that runs throughout the entire song. Elsewhere, R.E.M. tread standard territory: "Electrolite" is a lovely piano-based ballad, "Departure" rocks like a Document outtake, the chiming opening riff of "Bittersweet Me" sounds like it was written in 1985, "New Test Leper" is gently winding folk-rock, and "The Wake-Up Bomb" and "Undertow" rock like the Monster outtakes they are. New Adventures in Hi-Fi may run a little too long -- it clocks in at 62 minutes, by far the longest album R.E.M. has ever released -- yet in its multifaceted sprawl, they wound up with one of their best records of the '90s."
