Released in 1973, the record also introduced a young Sammy Hagar and his powerful vocals to the world, but the explosive aggression of Ronnie Montrose's biting guitar left no doubt as to why it was his name gracing the cover. A rock-solid rhythm section featuring drummer Denny Carmassi and bassist Bill Church certainly didn't hurt either, and unstoppable anthems such as "Rock the Nation" and their rowdy take on the jump blues chesnut "Good Rockin' Tonight" would lay the ground rules for an entire generation of late-'70s California bands, most notably Van Halen. The simple production techniques of Ted Templeman, who went on to work extensively with Van Halen, really lets the players shine and no amount of time can dim the sheer euphoria of "Bad Motor Scooter," the adolescent nastiness of "Rock Candy," and the simply gargantuan main riff of the phenomenal "Space Station #5." Montrose is a blast from start to finish and remains an essential addition to any collection of '70s hard rock and early heavy metal. Rhino reissued the album in 2017 with remastered sound, liner notes and a bonus disc made up of demos and a live radio recording made before the band even had a name. It was taped in April of 1973 for radio station KSAN when the group were last minute fill-ins for Van Morrison. They rip through a ten song set of originals and covers, with Ronnie Montrose sounding like a beast on guitar. Also on the disc are six demos cut in 1973, with a speeded up early version of "Rock Candy" and one song, "Shoot Us Down," that didn't make the final cut. Finding more sympathetic producers in Duane Baron and John Purdell to replace Roy Thomas Baker (who had helmed his last effort, 1988's No Rest for the Wicked), collaborating with Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead on four songs, and retaining the services of guitarist Zakk Wylde, Osbourne brought his music into the '90s. Songs like "******* and "S.I.N." had an energetic, contemporary metal sound, and Osbourne effectively changed gears to turn out gentle ballads like "Mama, I'm Coming Home," which gave him his first U.S. Top 40 hit on his own. Not cowed by his court cases, he wrote songs about child abuse ("Mr. Tinkertrain") and serial murder ("No More Tears") from the point of view of the criminals. But he also considered his own place in the general scheme of things in the tribute to the rock & roll lifestyle "Hellraiser" and the reflective "Road to Nowhere." Albums by Pallbearer, YOB, Bell Witch, and Electric Wizard have garnered exceptional attention for a metal subgenre that's been around...well, forever. Richmond, Virginia's loud-and-proud Windhand, signed with Relapse after Soma, their grimy sophomore album, received rave reviews and made a slew of 2013 year-end lists. Expectations run high for Grief's Infernal Flower. Produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana's Bleach and Soundgarden's Screaming Life), the sound on most of this set is enormous. It may be just a tad less gritty, and the songs are (a bit) tighter and shorter -- there are no half-hour marathons. There is a more expansive approach to the songwriting and vocal production too. Vocalist Dorthia Cottrell's commanding presence bends the riff-o-sonic wall of sludge to her will and reveals more subtle post-psych melodies and actual hooks that lurk within them -- check the stellar "Two Urns" and "Crypt Key." Parker Chandler's uber-low, mega-fuzzed bass throb and Ryan Wolfe's drumming govern the instrumental attack, leaving ample opportunity for guitarists Asechiah Bogdan and Garrett Morris to focus on plodding power riffs and spiral around one another in solos on the epic-length tracks. On the blistering "Forest Clouds," Cottrell rides every circular vamp, rising with more power until it all collapses around her. Windhand attempt a wall-plastering psych-blues groove and syncopation simultaneously on "Tanngrisnir." They only partially succeed but they earn points for the attempt. Cottrell has two solo vocal and acoustic guitar numbers here, "Sparrow" and closer "Aition," which stand with Grief's Infernal Flower's best moments even if they seem like outliers. She released a killer self-titled solo album earlier in 2015; these tracks -- equal parts Townes Van Zandt, Conny Ochs, Steve Von Till, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce -- could have come from those sessions. "Hesperus" is the first of two back-to-back 14-minute jams. Despite its glacial-paced riffing, it eventually erupts in a blackout squall of guitar distortion and dissolute drumming. "Kingfisher" begins more abstractly before the doomy stoner vibe grabs center stage, one Sabbath-esque riff at a time. Cottrell is at her most physical here, using her low range to carve a pronounced melody from the guitar-and-bass attack. It's just as menacing but more alluring, which makes the whole thing more sinister. This is music made for sleet-blasted pine forests and moonlit drives passing abandoned storefronts strewn with faded missing-persons posters. It's Windhand's second time around with famed grunge and alt-rock producer Jack Endino, and like its predecessor, 2015's Grief's Eternal Flower, it sees the band both expanding and crystallizing its sound. This time around, Dorthia Cottrell's vocals are pushed even more to the forefront, lending an air of authority that helps dampen the slow-burn sonic architecture of epics like "Eyeshine" and "Feather," both of which lurch past the ten-minute mark. While the overall pace adheres to the genre's predilection for torpidity, between Cottrell's otherworldly crooning and the band's tasteful melodic touches, there is a certain amount of grace attained, especially on standouts like "Halcyon," "Diablerie," and "Grey Garden." Bluesy, bold, and brooding, Windhand's well-honed sludge/doom aesthetic, which can be suffocating at times, is often ameliorated by underpinnings of classic rock, resulting in something that feels both familiar and fantastical.
