Do dogs get the blues? How do we know? What gives them the blues?
Dogs are simply some of the finest people I know. They are always willing to listen, give comfort and best of all, keep our secrets! The older I get, the less I (Tas Cru) worry about what people think. But I do care what dogs think of me! As I have often said, I am blessed that dogs and kids seem to like me (other adults . . . well? . . . I do try.) So, with this album I get to do something to return their love - an album about dogs, for kids (of all ages) and I get to play the blues doing it - how great is that?
Ok, let's get down to business. So . . . do dogs get the blues? Contrary to what animal behavior experts argue, my fans and I believe they do indeed. Prior to releasing this album I conducted a through and totally accurate and unbiased survey by way of Facebook. The 350+ likes and 100+ comments show conclusively that these experts must never actually have owned a dog! Like many people today who seem to value and trust people's opinions over science, we therefore (you fans + me) proudly proclaim that dogs do indeed get the blues! We hope you enjoy listening to the twelve songs that explore some of these - desire for food and treats, need for longer walks and more playtime, battles with fleas and cats, and simply being misunderstood.

Of all the dates Cannonball Adderley cut with producer David Axelrod for Capitol, this 1972 set is the most unusual. Featuring three long jams and a short tune, this session is the sextet with Nat Adderley on cornet, Roy McCurdy on drums, George Duke playing acoustic piano and Rhodes, Walter Booker on bass, and Airto Moreira on percussion, with guests Flora Purim on vocals, guitarist David T. Walker, and percussionist King Errison. Bassist Chuck Rainey and vocal soloist Olga James help out on "Savior." This set was released just after Cannonball Adderley Quintet & Orchestra, but the vibe is completely different. Rather than focusing on hard bop, soul-jazz, or free bop jazz styles, Adderley concentrates most of his band's energy on Brazilian grooves in three of these four tunes. Played in front of a live (studio) audience, the vibe is celebratory, loose, raw, and inspired. From the opening moments of the title track, this group takes chances. The leader concentrates mostly on alto here, but he doesn't abandon soprano entirely. The vibe underneath the percolating Brazilian rhythms is defined and raucous. Purim's and Airto's singing is limited to a few of the tune's 11-plus minutes, but is rapturous. The reading of Milton Nascimento's "Maria Tres Filhos" is primo Brazilian jazz-funk; it offers fine solos in tandem by Cannonball, Nat, and Walker (maybe his best on record), with killer wah-wah piano by Duke atop the layers of percussion. Purim is at her improvisational finest near the end. Using a variation of the vamp from Miles Davis' "So What" (on which Cannonball originally played) as the tune's body, James delivers a vocal that weds modern classical and jazz. The horns begin to wind things out and Duke's spacy piano underscores them in a modal groove. By the time the tune concludes, it's in a very different place than where it began. Final number "ELA," written by Benito Di Paula, is based on layers of rhythm from drums and an astonishing array of percussion instruments, and tough acoustic piano. Purim's voice on the chorus is joyous, in contrast to Airto's more restrained yet breezy soulful lead vocal. At a shade over four minutes, it goes by in a blip to end this set. The Happy People is one of Adderley's most under-recognized offerings, but not because of quality. It stands out not only from his own catalog in its bracing, ambitious world-view, but from the wide swath of jazz fusion from the period. Its seamless integration of Brazil's rainbow of sounds with jazz and funk is visionary; it sounds as fresh in the 21st century as when it appeared. -- Thom Jurek

Folk-blues guitarist and singer Brooks Williams is as adept playing traditional blues as he is singing his own contemporary folk songs. His voice has been endlessly compared to James Taylor's and yet his unique renderings of self-penned and blues classics on guitar make him an original. Based in western Massachusetts for most of the 1990s, Williams was born in Statesboro, GA and lived in other small towns in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi while growing up. In his youth, he heard a lot of gospel and roadhouse blues, but after he discovered rock & roll, he forgot about blues until one day in 1987, when he opened for blues/folk diva Rory Block at a club in upstate New York. Block inspired Williams to rediscover the acoustic blues he knew in his youth, and he began teaching himself songs by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter Jacobs. Williams began to draw more of his performing persona from classic blues, and while working the folk circuit, opening up for crafty songwriters like Cheryl Wheeler, Bill Morrissey, and John Hiatt, he also began to develop his own skills as a songwriter. Since then, Williams' live shows have become an artful mix of classic acoustic blues, original blues songs, and self-penned contemporary folk songs. His development as a songwriter has been speedy, and he's got a slew of albums to prove it -- Hundred Year Old Shadow (1999), Seven Sisters (1997), Knife Edge (1996), Inland Sailor (1994), Back to Mercy (1992), all for the Green Linnet Redbird label -- as well as 1991's How the Night-Time Sings, 1990s North from Statesboro, and 1989's Red Guitar Plays Blue on his own Red Guitar Blue Music label. After this incredible hot streak of original albums, Williams decided to step back and attempt a straight guitar album, leading to 2000's Little Lion. Showcasing his impressive technical skill, that record was his apex as a virtuoso, as he began to cut back on his complicated guitar licks and work on his flexibility as a songwriter. The Dead Sea Cafe compilation came out soon after, acting as a proper introduction to those who might not have access to his earlier work. His next two records, 2001's Skiffle- Bop and 2003's Nectar, were folk-pop albums that freely incorporated elements from other genres and played off of Williams' strengths as a songwriter.

Laurel Sprengelmeyer, a.k.a. Little Scream, says she began conceiving of Cult Following while visiting a friend in a small intentional community in northern Brazil that was on the verge of becoming a cult. "People were running around reading auras, interpreting each other's dreams, and 'living on light' instead of eating-which was as compelling as it was absurd. I became very aware of the entropy of belief. You could feel the magnetism of ideas take shape and pull people into their center like a black hole. a thing so filled with light that its own gravity means that none of it can escape."

That experience laid the groundwork for Cult Following, a lush, expansive, retro-leaning gem that straddles intimate fragility with bombastic dancefloor-ready songs. Listening to it is like reading an epic novella: part fairy tale, part ecstasy, and part human folly. Right from the start, you know you've entered a universe with its own rules-dazzling, dark, and whimsical, not unlike Willy Wonka's gated factory. From the candy-filled ballroom of "Love as a Weapon" (which is as accessible as it is emotionally complex), you are invited onto the comforting ship of the warm ballad "Evan," only to find that "the waves are falling/they're falling in faster, and the ship has no master.here comes disaster!" When the shipwreck subsides, you find yourself in the dark depths of the song "Wishing Well," where Mary Margaret O'Hara makes a stunning, subtle vocal appearance. Mary Margaret is one of several guests to appear on this record, along with Sufjan Stevens, Sharon Van Etten, and Kyp Malone. Encountering them is not unlike having cameo stars within a film, but the world they inhabit is entirely Little Scream's, and her voice acts as a tour guide through lush and sometimes terrifying sonic landscapes carefully constructed with her creative partner, Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry.

Cult Following is a record that deserves to be listened to from start to finish, with each song having been constructed to meld seamlessly into the next. There may be those who listen only to the record's obvious catchy hit, but they would be missing out on the depth of stunners like "Wishing Well" and "Someone Will Notice." Like a classic novella, you must pass through all of the record's stages to fully experience a triumphant hero's journey.
