Description: The Big Bird Cage is a lovely movie all around. There's plenty of gorgeous and fertile *ahem* scenery. And by scenery I mean the constant nudity, as well as Pam Grier's majorly caged rack (she doesn't take it off in this one!). The Big Bird Cage is a damn entertaining movie. It's part zany, part savage, and hella impressive throughout. Both this movie and its predecessor, The Big Doll House, are in a completely different grade level than their peers in the women-in-prison genre. The Big Doll House was a huge success, grossing $10 million in theaters. The BBC followed it up strong with the same formula that made the first one great. The sets and the cast were expanded for The BBC, but each of the characters still retain the same uniquely endearing camp qualities that make the scenes memorable. Jack Hill, the writer and director of both films, has been largely credited for pioneering the women in prison genre based on these two movies.

The action starts quick in The Big Bird Cage. Pam Grier, Sid Haig, and their fellow band of militant rebels take over a restaurant and kidnap some tourists to use for ransom. Sid Haig plays an impressively dirty role yet again, as he always did in Jack Hill's movies. One of their kidnap victims, rather than getting saved by the local policia, gets sent to prison for being a high profile slut with unsavory ties to all the country's politicians. The sexy antics in the prison camp are endless, let me tell ya. There's the dike-ish authoritarian, the Viking-ish musclebound broad, the spunky black chick. But just when everything starts feeling completely Hogan's Heroes, one of the gay prison guards hits a bitch in the face and shackles her to the bed - and more such savagery.

When Pam Grier eventually enters the prison she moves up to head-bitch-in-charge damn quick. The rest of the rebels eventually arrive to free the women at the end of the film, resulting in an amazingly brutal series of events that ends with [SPOILER ALERT] every fucking person dying! It's great. Buildings catch on fire (giving rise to a bad ass burning-negative-wipe), guards get hacked to death by machetes, women get mowed down by automatic gunfire, and even Sid Haig and Pam Grier meet their demise in a super classic last stand death sequence. My favorite scene over all was probably the part where two female prisoners gang rape one of the gay prison guards for revenge (he eventually gets killed when the real mayhem starts). Basically, The Big Bird Cage hits like you wanna be hit, and doesn't bullshit.
