And this is a famous gas crater. At first it seems that this is just a black hole in the middle of the desert…

… but once you come closer, you can see hundreds of little tongues of fire.


It was formed in 1971 as a result of the Soviet gas exploration accident. Then the bore suddenly collapsed because there was an underground chamber inside. No one was hurt, but gas started to flow from under the ground. Then it was decided to burn the gas in the hope that it will end soon. But it still continues to flow, even 40 years after the accident.


Anyway, the sight is fantastic. Expecting to see a hellish bottomless abyss, you reach the very edge, look down and see just a 20-meter deep crater.



In leeward of the well, it smells really terrible. One can even lose his consciousness here.


The desert seems completely lifeless. But, it’s not like this at all. The traces of ground squirrels, rock badgers, foxes and jackals are everywhere. Lizards and spiders crawl at your feet, coccyges and eagles fly in the sky.

Ground squirrels are especially curious.
