Esta trama ocurre en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, Brasil, donde tiene como protagonista a Blu, que es una especie rara de guacamayos residentes en un zoológico de Minnesota que cree que es el último ave de su especie. Un dia se entera de que una guacamaya ha sido descubierto en América del Sur deja Minnesota y viaja a Río para encontrarla.
