Jack, un profesor y escritor estadounidense que enseña en París, está pasando una mala racha: se acaba de divorciar y su nuevo libro ha sido rechazado por varios editores. Durante una visita a unas antiguas ruinas, Jack descubre multitud de gárgolas en un lugar en el que no deberían estar. Pronto empiezan a producirse en la ciudad del amor misteriosos asesinatos que parecen guardar relación con dichas estatuas, y Jack se convierte en el principal sospechoso.
