La popularidad de Rush alcanzó su cenit con el álbum «Moving Pictures» de 1981. La primera canción, Tom Sawyer, es probablemente la más conocida de la banda -incluso Geddy Lee la califica como la «canción tradicional» de Rush-. «Moving Pictures» se disparó a la posición número 3 en el ranking de Billboard en tan sólo dos semanas y ha sido certificado cuádruple-platino por la RIAA en 1995. Debido a lo vanguardista del género, Tom Sawyer aún se escucha regularmente en estaciones de rock clásico. De este periodo, sin embargo, no hay que dejar de lado éxitos tales como Limelight, YYZ y Subdivisions.
