Canada's four-piece independent act, Gnarwhal, creates a heavy wall of melodic distortion, fuzz, and spacey guitar/basslines along with propulsive drumming and emotionally charged vocals. Originally formed in 2020 to casually jam and kill time during the pandemic, the group became the leading force in the resurgence of live heavy music in Canada's north. In 2022, the band was nominated for three awards (Best Debut Release, Best New Single, and Best Live Performance) at the inaugural NWT Music Awards (the most nominations of any act), and took home the award of Best New Single, for their latest release, Deep Spaced.
The band formed in 2020 by guitarist Benji Straker, vocalist Mark Kilbride, and bassist Jeremy Straker, with drummer Layne Rybchinski joining in 2021. Prior to Gnarwhal, all members of the band had been active with other acts in both their hometown and across Canada. Citing a varying range of musical influences, each band member brings their own style of playing to create a blend of alternative, post-hardcore, grunge, metal, and punk music to the mix.
As pandemic restrictions lifted, Gnarwhal worked hard to create a resurgence of live heavy music by organizing several DIY concerts and incorporating numerous newly formed bands in the north to perform. While being the drivers behind creating this new music scene, the band was also writing and recording. Their debut single, The Outlier was released in February 2022, followed by Deep Spaced (single) in July. Gnarwhal's debut full length album released on April 14, 2023.
