Four members of an international theft ring stole more than $300,000 in merchandise from high-end retailers in South Florida, according to a Palm Beach Police news release.
Police described the ring as "sophisticated" with the members distracting employees and using so-called "booster bags," which are bags typically lined with foil to evade anti-shoplifting alarms.
Police discovered the theft ring May 14 after two women, Edna Rico-Cordona and Yeniffer Roldon-Salas, were seen stealing Chanel purses and shoes from the Chanel store on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, according to the release.
The duo took off in a rented van driven by Daniel Casadiego Gutierrez, whom police described as a foreign national from Colombia, according to the release.
A task force tracked the van and found stolen merchandise from Prada, Gucci, Burberry and other high-end places. The thieves were trying to ship the goods to Colombia before police intercepted the items, according to the release.
Police eventually found a fourth suspect, Jonathan Javier Bayonarrico, who distracted employees during the thefts, police said.
Officers said the group also took items from high-end stores in Coral Gables and The Dolphin Mall in Miami.
All four were arrested May 20 at a hotel in Oakland Park and face grand theft charges.
Police say boxes of items were already shipped out of the country before the group was caught.
