What distinguishes this superb album for me is the participation of the iconic Alfredo Linares, the Peruvian pianist, arranger and composer who initially made his mark in the early '70s with the quirky hits "Tiahuanaco" and "Mambo Rock". He has made a string of albums as a leader that have become rare collectors items. In fact Sabrosito is currently the only title featuring Linares available in the Descarga.com catalogue.
The popularity of hard salsa was on the wane in Venezuela when Sabrosito appeared in 1984. Rodrigo Mendoza, who sings the lion's share of the lead vocals, had already been through the ranks of Los Satélites, Dimensión Latina and his own short-lived band La Amistad (co-led with pianist Jesús "Chuíto" Narváez, another Dimensión Latina alumnus) before joining La Gran Banda. Another La Amistad ex-member, Fausty González, occupies one of the trombone chairs in the two 'bone / two trumpet frontline.
La Gran Banda's sound on Sabrosito has the tightness and cohesion of a working group. The opening title track veritably rips along and includes a short conga solo from Maximo González. Linares takes an enticingly brief piano solo on "Falsa". "Mi Coquita" kicks ass - but there isn't really a dud track on the whole project.
